Marigold-Gateway to India was an unexpected, yet pleasant find. This shop is connected to Show and Tell Vintage through an open door. I was transported back to Bangalore, India where I spent quite a lot of time when I managed one of the Asia design centers during my high-tech days. I cannot believe that Marigold - Gateway to India was on S. Lamar when I lived on S. Lamar. Walking into the shop felt like being transported to Bangalore or Rajasthan, India. Marigold is rooted in vibrant color, texture, and uniquely Indian pieces. The overhead draped colorful cloth added to the ambience. The store offers a curated selection of Indian clothing, jewelry, accessories, and gifts. The quality and variety of the merchandise was immediately noticeable. From traditional and contemporary clothing for women, men, and children to unique accessories and decorative pieces, everything feels authentic. Lata, the owner, was super nice and welcoming! The store was laid out in such a way to invite you to peruse the items in a slow and enjoyable manner...relish the shopping experience. Great discovery...will definitely be returning! read more

What a delight to have a fantastic local spot like Marigold! I came across Marigold after doing a quick research in trying to find traditional Indian dance pieces for a gift. Upon walking in I was greeted by the shop owner and welcomed in. All items are laid out so beautifully and carefully. I loved the vibrant colors and all of the diverse imports she has here. I saw so much from clothing, art, jewelry, and one of kind items throughout the store. I came in for a gift for my mother who recently taken up traditional belly dancing and asked me to help her find a colorful wrap and a coin-like belt. I found one for a great price and was able to choose a colorful wrap with the help of the owner. My mother was so pleased in receiving her gift and appreciated the thoughtfulness. The care and attention to what I was looking made a solid 5-stars just based on customer service alone. Parking is shared with other vintage and local art spots in the area when you come here. Easy in and out if you go further back past the storefront too. There are about 4 spots directly in front as well but you might have to be patient when backing out of your space with the usual amount of traffic on Lamar behind you. read more

This place is a hop skip and a jump from us. But I would drive for hours to shop here. There is something for everyone. The owner is a kind and wonderful woman. She allowed us to browse without pushing us to buy. The selection of Indian clothing, lifestyle, etc speaks for itself. It's for everyone. We had been wanting a set of Tibetan singing bowls. And she had hand hammered bowls at amazing prices! Scarves, dresses, skirts, sarongs, henna, incense... I can go on and on. She was so inviting and calm in her nature, we wanted to stay and just chat and enjoy the environment. We will absolutely be back! If I could give more stars I would. read more

This is a very cute shop with a great variety of traditional Indian clothing and accessories. A few months ago I went to a party with an Indian theme, and I needed to get a nice sari to wear. I had a specific color in mind-- I wanted a turquoise one with a pallu that had silvery or white-gold threads, as opposed to yellow gold-- and I found exactly what I was looking for here! The owner helped me dig through the piles of saris to find the ones I wanted to try on, and then she showed me exactly how to put it on. Incidentally, while doing so, she finally clarified a life-long mystery for me... I had always wondered how they stay in place, and it turns out that Indian women wear a skirt/petticoat under the sari, and they also tuck the sari into the skirt in "pleats" to make it easier to walk around. As an enormous Caucasian lady, I don't have a lot of occasions to wear traditional Indian saris, but if it ever comes to pass I need another one, or need to give a gift with a global flavor, I will definitely stop by here again. It's a very nice shopping experience, and I might even learn something new (again)! read more

Imagine my excitement several months ago when I spotted Marigold, a wonderful new Indian clothing and home decor store on South Lamar (just south of Oltorf on the west side of the street). I LOVE Indian pieces-the colors, the fabrics, the accessories. I decorate with them and spice up my usual jeans and boots attire. Marigold has so many beautiful things-and the prices are very affordable which makes it a very dangerous combination for me. The store is large, easy to shop in and the staff is friendly. Some of my favorite things are the selection of antique silk sari material (I draped mine over the top of my bed-love it), the long, colorful fabric "lamps" -some are hanging outside when you drive past the store-and the delicate embroidered blouses. Because I live nearby, I will stop in occasionally to just see what's new-and there's always something that catches my eye. The store also hosts yoga and Indian music classes, and there's plenty of parking in the back. read more

This place is fantastic! I originally only visited to try to score a bottle of SoAP's Nag Champa hand lotion (they don't sell at too many places that were near us when we were visiting but I gave this place a try). Turns out, the hand lotion didn't do so well there and all they had out was soap. Fortunately I asked the kind woman at the front desk and she happened to have one bottle of it behind the counter. Not only that, but I think it might have been saved for some reason but she sold it to me anyway. As an out-of-towner that desperately wanted to snag a bottle of this awesomeness in lotion form, it was a great bonus for me that there was actually one in the building. In addition to my quest being fulfilled, the aforementioned woman was super chill, really friendly, and told me that if there was anything I needed or wanted to let her know and she'd totally order it for me. I'd say this store is almost entirely geared towards women, at least in terms of clothing, but I also didn't spend any time browsing once I found out that she had the lotion I wanted. My friend convinced me to stop by Marigold when we were shopping at Hush Hush next door one afternoon. I needed to find gifts for the hostesses of my last baby shower (and I decided that the standard gift card to Target was probably getting pretty old and had never been all that creative to begin with) but my budget was under $50 for two women. The owner was the only other person in the store upon entering, and she had a good balance of letting us explore the store on our own and offering up helpful information about the items offered in the store. She has an absolutely gorgeous assortment of saris from India, and she is happy to show you how to wrap them different ways, even if you buy it from her and then just bring it back in later for a lesson. Sadly, however, the saris were out of my price range for *both* gifts, but some vintage silk scarves caught my eye, and I was able to get two for under my budget. Both of the recipients absolutely LOVED their gifts. I will definitely go back (after I don't have a large pregnant stomach) to buy a sari. read more

Marigold has a beautiful variety of clothing and textiles from India. The store is mostly clothing, but they also carry blankets, saris and vintage fabric umbrellas. I stopped in just to look around and ended up leaving with an amazon sari for $25. The owner was extremely friendly and helpful. Overall a beautiful little local shop. read more

This place is amazing. I love the selection of jewelry, clothing, shoes, and more. The imports are straight from India and the lady who owns the store is so sweet. I spent about 2 hours in that place and came out with so many goodies. The prices for tunics (which I need more of) range from $24.00 + .. my favorite tunic i bought was $38.00 bucks.. Shoes i saw were $65.00 plus .. and they have fancy clothes too. You can be dressed for regular every day attire or weddings.. The price point of jewelry is about $10.00 + for earrings, ankle bracelets and you even get 12 bangles for $10.00. Go here, support here and I plan to get a lot more tunics from here.. A great friend of mine recently took me to Marigold to see the beautiful things for sale there. Fortunately, I had the added excuse that I needed a shirt to wear to the wedding of some friends of Indian heritage. I found a great embroidered shirt to wear for the wedding. Many of my friends complimented me on how great it looked and how they appreciated that I had worn Indian clothes. The shirt will also be wonderful to wear in hot weather. What a hidden gem I have found in Austin.. Two friends of mine also went to this place and was able to get their fantastic outfit within the budget.. They have beautiful vintage silk Indian draperies and saris.. I love the way the owner is so down to earth and HELPFUL without being pushy.. Austin does not have many or any Indian/Middle Eastern type stores that sell anything other than food and its nice to find a store to buy some jewelary, clothes, deity statues/pictures, and home furnishings. I always love walking into the store and Lata always greets me and even remembers me everytime I go in. One of the sweetest ladies ever and is willing to go out of her way to help you find what you need. The prices are reasonable and she has great quality of items. Nothing of mine has broke or torn yet. You can find difference sizes and colors in the outfits and the art they have is beautiful. if I had to put something on there that would be some what of a con, I wish they had more in the store. I accomplish all my gift shopping while I learn and practice strengthening my core among friends each week. While the atmosphere is informal and beautiful (sun streaming through bold cotton wall hangings and sheer lacy window dressings) the Pilates instructor (Britt Causey) is top notch- always researching, traveling to increase her knowledge and investigate our particular concerns.
