I hate leaving bad reviews, but this one was disappointing. I ordered the BBQ chicken plate, and the chicken looked more like ground turkey that had been run through a blender than actual BBQ chicken. The texture was completely off and not appetizing at all. The potato salad wasn't much better--it had a strange powdery taste that made it seem like it came from a mix instead of being homemade. The only reason I'm not giving an even lower rating is because the potato wedges were mid, and the service was outstanding. The staff was friendly, attentive, and did a great job. For the price, you're not going to beat this place. We were on a road trip to visit family, and I guarantee you for the $10ish per person we paid (AFTER gratuity), we would have spent more eating at a fast food restaurant. The restaurant has a very family focused feel to it, judging from how well the staff interacted with each other; everyone is smiling and lending a helping hand. The pork definitely has a smoke forward flavor, and I'm glad that I asked for both sauces on the side so that I could mix them and find the balance (though I would love to have some coarse ground mustard to mix in as well). The Brunswick stew stands out, and the fried okra has a delightful breading that isn't too thin, nor is it soggy or soft. Just right. Overall, pretty good BBQ. I ordered the pork platter and it was smoky and flavorful. They have two house barbecue sauces and both are tasty. Near the head of Talladega parkway just a bit north of I-20, this is a local place, bbq that's proper in texture and flavor but a tad dry for my taste. This is vinegar-based bbq, so a little drier not unexpected as this was vinegar-based. Flavors were on point, I enjoyed the sides. The restaurant is spacious and comfortable. The Brunswick stew was a pleasant surprise, just the right density & thickness. The other sides were unremarkable. Banana pudding was tasty. Every small town across the south has at least one bbq joint and most aren't too bad. The recipe is predictable... good food and friendly service. Marie's is an exception. After 58 years and easily 100 bbq restaurants from Texas to the Carolinas and all across Alabama, I've never been to such an openly hostile place. It was getting late, we were hungry and hopped off the interstate seeing there was a bbq place at the exit. The lights were on, open signs were blinking so we walked in. The staff glared and said nothing as we went to the counter. A young lady asked for our order and we said we needed a minute to look over the menu and she replied that we should hurry because they close in three minutes. We ordered to go saying we'd eat in the car. There was no attempt at being polite even after adding a generous tip to the credit car receipt. They bagged the food and literally dropped it on the counter and were visibly irritated when I reminded they hadn't gotten us our drinks. So the service sucks but what about the food? The pork sandwich was good but had hardly any sauce. The meat had a good flavor but some sauce would have been welcome. The potato salad desperately needed seasoning. The potatoes were undercooked and just needed some love. As part of a bbq club, we're always on the lookout for new places for our 50ish members to travel to. After being cooped up at the house for multiple weeks without the ability to go anywhere, we decided to pack up the family and go on a short road trip to the Talladega Scenic Byway. Our hope was to find a local restaurant somewhere on the trail and pick up lunch. But without a great way to map it out and lack of... anything on this highway, we weren't really sure where to turn. I figured out on Yelp a place that was close and it ended up being Marie's. With everything going on, the dining area was closed. But they were doing orders through the window. If you are waiting, be sure and call to place your order to make it go faster. But as soon as we pulled behind a car and got ready to call, we were able to pull right up. The lady at the window was INCREDIBLY nice. She told me I could wait at the window until someone pulled up behind. So we pulled into a parking place very close to the door. My wife and I both got a pork plate and decided to split four sides. My wife loved the fried green tomatoes and the okra best. And I loved the fries and onion rings the best. All were really good. I am not a huge fan of chipped pork. But I thought it was good. We got the traditional sauce and they added the perfect amount to taste the BBQ, but add enough flavor to the sauce. The kids ate ALL of the chicken fingers and fries they were given... so I can't give personal experience on that. But obviously they like it. It is not the best BBQ I have ever had. If this review was just about the pie, it would receive a 5-star. Unfortunately though, I had to count the BBQ too. Marie's is in the small town of Berlin off I-20 past Oxford-Anniston and before you get to Georgia. The restaurant is very clean and looks like a log cabin. I read the Yelp reviews and seems like the pork was spoken more highly of so I went with pork plate with beans and slaw and a piece of chocolate pie. The pork wasn't bad but not good either. It was chipped and not tough by any means, it just didn't really have much flavor to it and didn't mix well with the sauces. The sauces by themselves are pretty good. There is a spicy vinegar sauce similar to Dreamland sauce except with more bite to it. The sweet sauce is a ketchup base that has also has a subtle heat to it. But the pork doesn't soak up either sauce. It sits in the spicy one and the sweet one just sits on top of the pork. There are lots of sides to choose from but they charge an extra 26 cents for every side except beans, slaw, and fries. The beans were good but nothing stands out about them. The slaw was better as it was really creamy and sweet just the way I like it. The plate came with a piece of Texas Toast. Sweet tea was freshly brewed and really sweet. Now let's talk about the star of the meal...the chocolate pie! I'm not sure how it was made but it had a chocolate pie crust with chocolate chips on top of whatever chocolate congulation it was made of. It looked similar to a Hershey's chocolate cream pie but was 100x better. Marie's makes 4 different kind of pies and cakes homemade and makes the trip worth it especially at $1.50 a piece. Marie's is very affordable as my pork plate was $7.75 and the pie was $1.50 so it is easy to eat under $10. The pie was amazing but the BBQ was just ok at best. If I return, I will try a burger. I would have given it a 2 if it wasn't for the pie but the pie lifts it to a 3. read more

Great experience here with a large group. Food was tasty, service was friendly and fast, and they were very accommodating here for a large group. We are from out of town and met here with our family for a great meal. Lots of great BBQ options, spicy sauce, tenders, bbq, chicken salad, and other options. VERY disappointing, quite surprised it has so many glowing reviews. I came in around 3 PM, so well after lunch rush but LONG before closing time. Wanted to get brisket plate for eating there and brisket potato as take-home. The very disinterested young man at the counter said they were out of brisket, and that they were usually out of brisket by that time of day (begging the obvious question: If you're usually running out of brisket, shouldn't you be making MORE brisket every day?) The guy was very unconcerned, but there also wasn't much to be done, so I ordered the MUCH more expensive rib platter, as by now I was pretty hungry. The ribs tasted good, but only one of the ribs was actually tender, the rest were somewhat tough and chewy. French fries were greasy and soggy. A discount of some kind would have been a reasonable gesture under the circumstances, but none was offered, nor even some pitiful gesture like a complementary drink. I worked in the restaurant business for YEARS, this kind of poor kitchen management and indifferent customer service doesn't make the grade in a professionally run restaurant. Since it's now obvious that the only place near me that serves any kind of BBQ beef is such a terrible restaurant, I bought a smoker and will just make my own going forward. I think I've been cursed by growing up in the south with southern grandmas who make the best BBQ known to man so I have a much higher standard for BBQ and southern food than many people. I've been to Marie's a few times because it's convenient to my in-law's lake house. I've stuck consistently with the BBQ chicken sandwich because 1) pork doesn't always sit well with me and 2) I'm WAY pickier about my pork. The chicken is good, but it's bland to me and tends to be pretty dry. There's nothing spectacular about it and it's just plain average. Their sauces are ok too but seem average as well. The sides are good, but also nothing to write home about. I bet we will be back, as it is so convenient and there aren't many other places to choose from in Heflin. We were attending a wedding in Buchanan, GA about 30 miles east of Heflin. in all my travels, I've never darkened the doorway of Alabama. We had some time to kill, so I googled barbecue restaurants in Alabama near the Georgia border. Marie's had decent reviews, so we decided to give it a try. The experience did not disappoint at all. The house barbecue had a bit of a sour tang to it, and man was it delicious. The portions were generous, and the price was unbelievably reasonable. The staff were friendly as well. I can add to my life experiences that I've enjoyed some fine, genuine Alabama barbecue! Found this place with Yelp. Leaving Cheaha Park. Location is great. Ample parking and they have a drive thru. We ate inside. Very clean and following COVID guidelines. This nice-looking, clean restaurant off I-20 served up some decent BBQ sandwiches, grilled cheese sandwiches, homemade fries and delicious baked beans to a few weary travelers. I was skeptical at first, but pleasantly surprised that they seem to know a little something about fresh BBQ. BTW, you get your choice of sweet or vinegar based sauces. There are lots of other menu options for the whole family Brunswick Stew, hamburgers, chicken tenders and lots of sides. My only complaint was the big sign at the order counter stating all the add-on prices for extra dipping sauces and salad dressings. The 25 cent charge for a water cup is a bit nit-picky and cheap, in my view and a real turn-off for the customer (thus only four stars). What we want to see are happy faces (not solemn) and greetings as we walk in the door to order, not signs like this! read more

I love Marie's and always look forward to eating here when I visit Alabama. It is the epitome of a mom and pop place with friendly service, home cooked food, and a lazy, old town feel. A couple years ago Marie's changed up their menu and food choices which vastly improved their quality. The pulled pork sandwich basket is my favorite, and you can get a huge amount of food for a very reasonable price. A lot of the bad reviews seem to focus on the slow service, but to me that is part of what makes this place great. If you want a super fast, punctual restaurant, go to McDonalds down the street.
