My Experience at Maria's Bakery was wonderful!! I was recommened by a friend and have never gone back to the competition. I gave my mom a surprise 60th birthday party last year. All I had to do was give them the invitation and they cut the cake out and copied the invitation perfectly. The employees were so helpful and cheerful. Not only did the cake look amazing, it was so moist and melted in your mouth. The icing was not real sweet like other bakeries I have been to. I just paid $62 for a tiramisu cake & got a dry white cake w/ hazelnut icing. The sheet cake was not any better than anything I could get at Acme. Their doughnuts may be great but stay away from their cakes! Day 2 -- returned uneaten cake and got a full refund. She wanted me to take store credit but since Maria's is way out of the way for me I said no & got a full refund in cash. I first found out about Maria's because my company always orders their birthday cakes from here, and I've been really pleased with most of what I've tried. Some of the cakes that I have tried include: a.) Chocolate layer cake with fresh strawberries- This one is amazing and seems to be a favorite around the office. I love the dark rich, chocolate frosting and the fluffy chocolate cake. The fresh strawberries are a nice touch. b.) Fruit custard cake: This cake has fluffy white vanilla cake on the bottom and creamy vanilla custard layered over the top and finishes with a layer of fresh fruit on top. It's my favorite because it is not overly sweet, and it reminds me of one of my favorite desserts in Japan that was basically the same thing that came from a shop called Mario Dessert. This one is usually not pre-made because it doesn't keep too long with the fresh fruit, so you need to call and order it. c.) Chocolate layer cake with raspberry filling: This one is similar to the chocolate strawberry one, but doesn't contain fresh raspberries. Instead it has what appears to be a raspberry jam incorporated into the cake as another layer. It is quite tasty. d.) Giant Cookie Cake: This is not something I would normally seek out, but a co-worker was craving on like the ones you used to get at the mall as a kid from the Great American Cookie Company or whatever it was called. Maria's said they could do it, so we ordered one from there. I was not a fan because I don't like cookie cakes in the first place because they are way too sweet for me. However, everyone who likes sweets seemed to enjoy it, and I thought it tasted good in moderation. The cookie had a nice chewy texture. e.) Strawberry Shortcake: This one just looks beautiful with the fluffy whipped cream inside of butter-cream icing. It has fresh strawberries both on top and in the middle and the cake was moist yet fluffy. Strawberry Shortcake herself would be pleased. f.) Italian Rum Cake: I didn't have this one at work, I bought a small one for myself to try it. It was okay, but I wasn't as big of a fan because it was almost too moist, due to the rum I guess. I think a previous reviewer complained about this. It's my least favorite thing I've had here, but I didn't find it as bad as her description. The flavor was nice even though the texture was a bit off. g.) German Chocolate Cake: Another one I tried on my own. Sweet and delicious. It's like the chocolate cakes mentioned before, but has that nice coconut icing instead of chocolate. It's really good, but it still can't beat the stuff my mom makes. h.) Banana/Strawberry Cake: I bought this for a friend's birthday. It sounded interesting and had cute little pictures of bananas frosted on it. It was quite good. Inside was the custard that they use on the fruit tart with fresh bananas and strawberries inside with vanilla cake and a whipped cream frosting like the strawberry shortcake. The cakes were so good, that I decided to venture over here myself. Now I go here to get cannolis. They offer either vanilla or traditional ricotta filling. Both are so delicious that I get half vanilla and half ricotta about every time I go. The fill them when you order them, so they don't get soggy. Also the turnovers are huge and delicious. I prefer the cherry over the apple, but that's just a personal preference. They have really cute sesame street cupcakes with big bird and cookie monster for the kids, or if you're like me, you know you want one too. Most recently I tried the donuts, and they were fresh and came in some interesting flavors. The butter-cream filled donut that looks like a donut sandwich is really good, but a little too rich for me to eat the entire thing at once. Oh, and the best thing beside the cakes would be the almond cookies. They are chewy and taste like marzipan goodness. Don't let looks deceive, because while they don't look like anything special from the outside, if you like almond, I don't see how you could be disappointed. They usually offer to write on the cake, so you don't even have to ask. The staff is very friendly and they are quick to serve you when you come in the shop, but leave you alone and give you time to browse if you need it. The prices are very reasonable, as everything is fresh and homemade. I will most definitely be back! FYI: They accept credit card, but there is a $10 minimum, so if you're just buying something for yourself, you might want to bring some cash! read more

I have been going to Maria's Bakery my whole life, getting hooked on their out-of-this world cream donuts that we would get after church when I was a kid. When I got married this summer, Maria's was our first choice for our cake. (My parents actually got their wedding cake their too!) Maria's did both our cake and an assortment of italian desserts. During all of our consultations, Maria made us feel like family, always sending us home with one of those cream donuts :) For the wedding, she even did special mini cream donuts just for us! Our cake was beautiful and delicious! Maria also gives all of her married couples a certificate to come back on their one year anniversary to get a fresh "cake top" to celebrate their first year. Came in from out of town and ordered a picture cake two days prior to an event I was going to. Was nervous about the short notice but Maria's delivered! Completely blown away at the service and final product. I have never ordered a picture cake before and expected the image to come out some what grainy or unclear but the picture on the cake was EXACT and looked amazingly clear. Not to mention the price was completely reasonable. The cake was a huge hit at the party and everyone inquired about where I had it done. They are a family run business and it shows in the love of the food that they make. I recently discovered Maria's earlier this year. My wedding was in August and I went to several popular Delaware County bakery's looking for not only a cake that looked good, but tasted equally as good. I have found that pound cake can be extremely dry and am usually always disappointed even with some of the most expensive cakes! I can not say enough about Maria's cakes!!! I was so impressed at my tasting and even more blown away at my wedding. The cake was EXACTLEY how I wanted it designed and so moist and deliscious:) There was so many flavors to choose from (almond pound was my #1) and you can not beat the price. Over the past weekend I had my 65th Birthday and purchased a full sheet cake and tray of cookies and assorted pastries. The compliments about all the goodies were 100%. I am giving Maria's a 1 star only because Maria was very nice to us at our visits and taste testing with her. I do NOT recommend this bakery at all. I married the woman of my dreams on July 12th and as me n my wife were taking our walk down the aisle as wives Julie told me not to panic but we had no cake. The cake and cupcakes were never delivered and when my wife called about it they said there was no order slip for it. They did eventually deliver six cakes and 100 cupcakes but not what we ordered. One of the cakes was some rum thing with gooey stuff in the middle. Needless to say my guest did not eat any wedding cake. I am very horrified by the product we received. And I was not happy with how they got delivered,the delivering guy was walking in front of our photographer while taking pictures of me and my wife. It was hard doing that because they were all so good! We picked our flavor and on the day of our wedding it was on time and Nice. I've heard great things about Maria's, so when I needed to order a custom cake, I decided to give them a call. I called on a monday and needed the cake by wednesday evening. The girl on the phone assured me that that was enough time. The cake was a bit risqué (Corset and breasts), however again I was assured that this was no problem as they do these cakes all the time. She gave me the email address for the decorator and asked me to email her the details for the cake and some picture examples of what we were looking for and that I would hear back from her when she came in the next morning. I immediately emailed the decorator and included my contact information for any issues. The following afternoon I still had not heard from the decorator as to a price and what time I could pick the cake up so I emailed her again. After waiting a few more hours and getting no response I called Maria's again and explained the situation. The woman I spoke with was very friendly and took my information and assured me that she would get right back to me after she contacted the owner. That woman called me back a little while later and said that she spoke with the owner who would be calling me shortly and lead me to believe that they would be making the cake. Its been 2 days and I still haven't heard from the owner nor the decorator that I emailed twice and I needed the cake last night. Had I known that their poor customer service was going to cost me a custom cake I would have surely gone to another bakery from the stat......as there are plenty in the area that do custom cakes with far less hassle. Furthermore, if they were unable or unwilling to make the cake, a simple response to either of my emails or telling me over the phone would have sufficed and I would have moved on. I realized that it was a last minute cake order, however to completely ignore me and never return my phone calls after being assured that it was no problem is incredibly rude and irresponsible. As a small business and in this economy, I would think that places would be more willing to embrace and keep new customers. I will definitely be taking my business elsewhere. read more

I recently purchased a Communion Cake for my grandson. I had the event at a popular restaurant. The cake was a round chocolate chip pound cake. When I started to cut the cake to serve to my guests I noticed that under the icing it was very dark. The cake was way overcooked and dry. My guests left their slices on their plates and filled up on the cookies I served with the cake. I was so embarrassed. I have purchased cakes from local bakeries and have always been happy with the results. I made the mistake to go back to Maria's Bakery for this event. They did give me back some of the cost of the cake when they witnessed the look and quality of the cake. However, I felt that they should have refunded me the entire amount since most of the cake was in the box. This overcooked cake should never have been iced for a customer. It was not cheap since it cost me almost $50.00. Sorry but I will not be supporting this bakery in the future. read more

Stopped in and picked up a strawberry shortcake. I do not recommend this. While the cake was ok, there was much more whipped cream frosting than actual cake. I'd say 25% cake and strawberries and 75% whipped cream went into making the cake. Maybe if it was cheaper I would've been ok, but overpriced for a couple cans of whipped cream. I might go back, but only to try one of their many pastries they had in the cases. read more

The cake decorator came out to help us choose what to get for our niece's bday party and she took out a few items and cut them up so we could taste them and then decide what to get for the kids and what would be good for the adults. She was extremely helpful. They use Real Butter which I love. This seems like a very authentic mom and pop type bakery. I like to support the little businesses, especially when it is the real deal. I will definitely recommend this place for any event or craving. read more

The first thing you notice as you enter the bakery is the fragrance of the baked goods. Heavenly! Maria's makes the most delicious tea biscuits. Far superior to the dry tea biscuits made at supermarket bakeries. The cookies and pastries are wonderful. A box of Maria's cookies makes a great hostess gift! I've been a loyal customer of Maria's for years so naturally I ordered my daughter's first birthday cake from them this week. My mom offered to pick it up. When it got here it was white instead of the silver and pink that I ordered. I called to ask what they could do, as of course we were in a time crunch getting ready for a party, and my husband ran it back over. I gave him the photos I sent to Maria's so they could refer to them again and at least make it a little bit more colorful. He came back with a still all white cake with slightly pink writing and and a very small box of cookies as a sorry. Everyone at the party said the cake looked like a wedding cake, which it did. I was very disappointed since I spent a lot of time and effort planning this party, but by then there wasn't anything we could do so we had to keep it. I called the next day to explain what had happened and asked if they could at least give me a refund for the $75 cake. The best they would do was offer a $25 gift card to their bakery. They refused to refund us a dime. I don't care about the money but I cannot redo this birthday, and the gesture of a refund would have eased my upset and been completely appropriate. Can't believe after all these years of being a loyal customer that is all they would do. read more
