I took 3 pairs of pants to Maria's that needed hems. Although I had more pants that would need hems I wanted to try her to judge. will I or won't I be happy with her work, she also got good reviews on YELP. Now I'm thinking she writes them herself. I was very unhappy with her work. First, the hems were mediocre at best; the top student in a high school sewing class could have done just as well, but I could live with it. The problem was when I tried them on to make sure the hems were good one pair was still too long. I took them back to Maria so she could fix them. She told me she would have to charge me to fix the problem, the full price, $18.00. She said it was my fault because I said the length was ok when she took the measurements. I'm not sure what happened between leaving and coming back - but the pants were the wrong length and she wanted to charge the full price for the correction. I have never had anyone refuse to make corrections at no charge - they fix the problem. They try to make the adjustments. No charge. I reminded this woman that I had just spent close to $60.00 for 3 pairs of pants. I even folded the pant to the length I wanted. She still claimed that since I agreed to the length when she measured them - It was my fault. I would have to pay again. Apparently, she doesn't understand the concept of repeat customers. Treat the customer right, they'll come back. Treat them bad - not only will they not come back, they'll tell friends and family about her. The only reason I used her was my previous seamstress retired. This is the first and last time I use Maria's Alterations for anything. I wouldn't even ask her for change for a dollar - she might add a surcharge I went to my cleaners (Cherry Land in San Leandro). They are a Cleaners that do alterations, so I decided to look around for somewhere that specializes. She supposedly does alterations only. The gentleman at Cherry Land will do the job, and only charge $15.00. If his alterations are anything like the cleaning, I'm sure it will be a better job, and they charge less. I'm sorry I didn't try them first. As for Maria, she is horrible. On a scale of 1-5, she's definitely a 1. Don't patronize her, she gouges. Her work isn't good at all. read more

I've been bringing my clothes here for alterations for approximately 5 years. She always does an excellent job and the prices are reasonable. She does ask for $ upfront, which i'm ok with. Love this shop and will recommend it to anyone. I'm petite and a lot of the clothes I buy need to be shortened or taken in. I'm comfortable with some basic sewing but struggle with things like taking in jeans at the waist or hemming flared pants nicely. I've brought a lot of clothes to Susan over the past year and she always does a fabulous job of making them fit like a glove. She always picks up the phone, has good hours, very reasonable prices, and quick turnaround time. She's also flexible about when you come in to pick up the clothes. When I'm trying on clothes I never feel judged by her, she creates a super safe space. She is now my go to tailor and I have a lot of appreciation for her and her work. I had a good experience with Maria's Alterations. She was great about hemming my gown for a special event. Fair pricing. She was respectful and prompt. My only con was I was told someone would call me when my alteration was ready to pick up (but was promised it for Thursday since I needed it for Friday for a fitting before my event on Saturday) and no one called me when it was ready. I called on Friday morning to inquire and mentioned no one had called me and there was no apology but some excuse about how they weren't technically open Friday because it was a special day? this was 10.26.18 so it's not a holiday date... Anyway... I skipped over that since I didn't see how it was a holiday and said I could stop by at 2pm to pick up and they said they would be there. All in all the alteration was well done and I would use again but just don't expect a call when they say they are going to call you! read more

I don't write yelp reviews often, but I just had to for this place. This place is my family's most trusted tailor. The owner has been doing alterations since 1996. Her prices are reasonable and she's very skilled. She's the only person my mom trusts enough to tailor her designer brand coats. She recently altered a vintage dress that my mom has passed down to me as well. She's also very kind. This is an amazing hole in the wall that I 100% recommend. She has never turned down any of the clothes we've asked her to alter that are "too complicated" for a lot of other tailors or dry cleaners. Just make sure to call her before coming in because she goes on missions every now and then! read more

I just left this place it says Maria's Alterations my reason I came to it in the first place was because I saw on Yelp it had five stars and 4 good reviews when I got here it's an Asian lady in here she does not speak English very well but enough to understand what I needed done I put on my clothes and we do the alterations adjustments so I had about five or six things in clothing that need to be done now I remind you on the wall there's nothing that says they need half of their money up front so when she gets through she tells me...but I don't know if you're coming back I need half the money I said no I have never been to any place for alterations or anywhere that asked me for money up front I don't even know what kind of work you can do... I'm taking a chance on you too I'm only going by some references... I will not pay you half up front so my feeling is she's racist against the color of my skin black people she's assuming that all blacks don't pay up won't come back and get their clothes I'm a retired intelligent black woman that has plenty of money in the bank I refuse to let her Judge Me by the color of my skin. So instead of continuously arguing or saying anything I took my clothes and I leave I'll go somewhere else but I would think twice about patronizing this business because she's being racist toward me and people of color read more
