Rude & unprofessional manger and workers, Marcos pizza in Helotes

Marco's pizza in Helotes is the absolute worst. The manager accused me of trying to pass a counterfeit $100 bill without even having a pen to check it! Of course, I insisted that it was not, and he told me to shut up and leave! This totally validates the other horrible stories I have heard about THE HELOTES location, avoid this place!!! I will be contacting their corporate office & the owners.

They couldn't slice the pizza or cut up the ham.
    Jeff F.

The pizza is tasty and usually everything is good, but today they just threw the pizza together. One pizza was not sliced and the ham was not cut. We had one big pie with whole slices of ham on it. Be careful when you order.

The menu is pricey, which we don't mind when the food is good. The food we had does not justify these prices. The calamari ($16) is obviously cooked from frozen. It's not seasoned and was overcooked. Calamari isn't the most forgiving dish, so we didn't say anything. It was still edible and we were hungry. The marinara sauce wasn't bad. The side salads (one free with entrée, one $6) were your basic bagged salad with one sad slice of tomato and three slivers of shaved carrot. Dressing is not made in house. The bread (free with entrée) was the star. The dipping oil ($5) seemed like the only thing that was actually made from scratch. It was full of chopped garlic and basil with some red pepper flakes. Absolutely delightful. The bread came out fresh. It had a lovely crisp crust and a pillowy soft middle. I could have eaten a whole basket of the bread. I'm not sure if it's baked from frozen, but it was really good. We split the cappellini carciofi entrée ($16 lunch special) that was described as chicken breast sautéed with artichokes, fresh tomatoes and white wine. Served in a lemon sauce over angel hair. What we got was an anemic chicken breast pounded wafer thin that had been stewed in canned tomatoes and artichokes. There no lemon flavor in the sauce. The pasta was cooked perfectly, but the sauce just tasted like oil. The whole dish had a metallic taste that made us instantly stop eating bc it just tasted off. At that point we were over it. We had been willing to overlook the disappointing calamari, if the main dish had been great, but it was worse. Our server was very nice, but for some reason when apologizing for the bread taking longer to come out, decided to say she was baking it fresh so it "wouldn't get salmonella, because there'd been so many outbreaks". My husband and I looked at each other like. "huh? What are you doing with bread to risk salmonella?" and why would you mention salmonella right before bringing me chicken dish?!? Weird. When advised we didn't like the dish, she was very kind and got the manager. The manager did offer to bring us something else but we were already so turned off, we just wanted to go. She did bring us some more bread to go with the dipping oil that we asked to take home which was a nice touch. I don't know if we will go back. Some of the pics and reviews make me think maybe we just got the wrong thing or went on an off day.

It was served with flatbread for dipping, and the lemon butter sauce was absolutely delicious. I followed our server's recommendation and ordered the Chicken Napoletana for my entrée. In all seriousness, it was one of the best chicken dishes I've ever had. The balance of flavors, the sauce, and the overall execution were perfect. I would absolutely come back just to order this dish again. We also had the pizza and spaghetti with meatballs, and both were delicious. The bread deserves a special mention as well- 10/10. I found this restaurant while visiting San Antonio and wanted to avoid dining near the River Walk, so I followed an article that listed it as the best authentic Italian restaurant in the city. After eating here, I completely agree with that assessment. Overall, this was an outstanding meal and a place I would gladly recommend to anyone looking for excellent Italian food in San Antonio.

Yes, you read that correctly; San Antonio's bon vivant/man(child) about town, purveyor of…read morepretention has awarded a chain pizza restaurant five stars. Have I gone mad or is Mod Pizza really a five-star experience? A bit of both, perhaps! I entered Mod Pizza with lowered expectations and left wondering how a pizza put together on an assembly line (think Subway but with pizzas instead of sandwiches) could be so gosh darn tasty. I'm still wondering, but I can't argue with results; over the course of four recent visits, I've experienced nothing short of excellence on all fronts. The first thing I noticed upon entering this location was that the restaurant was immaculate. The open kitchen was spotless, the tables were all clean and bussed, and the entire restaurant smelled of hearth. Even the restroom was pristine, an unfortunate rarity among fast-casual restaurants. Mod's claim to fame is that you can build a pizza of your own choosing. You pay a flat fee ($8.95, if memory serves) for an 11-inch pizza and then choose as many toppings as you want at no additional cost. Considering that most national pizza joints charge per topping, Mod's "anything or everything" policy is enticing. Once you're done selecting your toppings, the pie goes into a gas oven and cooks in about three minutes. On my first visit, I created a fancy-ass pizza topped with mozzarella, parmesan, asiago, Gorgonzola, fresh ricotta, red onions, whole cloves of roasted garlic, and a fig-balsamic glaze. The affable young lady behind the counter had no difficulty keeping up with my requests and was very generous with the toppings. When I bit into the first bite, I could taste every component...and I hummed a little ditty to myself. The crust was thin and crispy, the red onion retained its astringency, and the funk from the Gorgonzola contrasted nicely with the sweetness and acidity from the fig-balsamic glaze. I can take credit for this pizza's conception, but Mod executed it perfectly. On subsequent visits, I've experimented with a variety of toppings. I won't bore you on the specifics, but every pie has been a winner. Pro tip: consult the online menu beforehand and jot down your toppings in advance. Doing so will keep the line moving briskly and prevent you from putting together a slapdash Frankenstein's monster of clashing components. Now, don't get me wrong. By giving Mod five stars, I'm not implying that they are on par with a place like Il Forno. That would be a ridiculous, unfair comparison. What I *am* saying, though, is that Mod is great for what it is: an innovative fast-casual concept and a great value. I even approve of their music selections. I've heard them play "Sound and Vision" by David Bowie, "The Killing Moon" by Echo and the Bunnymen, and even "Fire" by The Crazy World of Arthur Brown. Hey, that's my main man! Go there!
