When I first found this place years back it was great. The food is still good but the service is bad. Also they have raised their prices drastically but it does not reflect on the menu prices. Once they bring the check, they tell you the prices have gone up. Last but not least, the food has made me sick the last two times I have been there. The place doesn't look the cleanest and that doesn't bother me but the fact that I have gotten sick the last two times have made me concern. They are big and served hot and cheesy The service is good, and attentive. The location is next to a closed down 7-11, so if you are looking for a glamorous place this is not it. Inside you feel like you have been transported to a Central America eatery, football (soccer) is on every large screen . They have a window in front for pickup orders and in the back is where you can find seating. Each table has its own set of condiments, nothing fancy just what you need a roll of paper towels to share. When in the area it's worth it if you want to have some good papusas. read more

I tried Marcelas off the recommendation of my girlfriend. I was originally headed to Sardi's until my girlfriend suggested this place. Although out of the way I was interested in trying and finding my new favorite peruvian place that could compare with my love for El Pollo Rico. I ordered a whole chicken and was charged $22 which is significantly more than what I am used to paying especially when a rotisserie chicken from wegmans costs less than $10 and Sardi's less than $15. The service was extremely bad and cleanliness was non existent; I really wonder when was the last time the health department has patronized this place as they were cooking food on the stove and due to high heat and no one watching the pots they were overflowing onto the burners causing flames. They only have two sauces here one green and one yellow The yellow is a sweet mayo not good at all; the green was spicy and yummy. I would not go out of my way to return, also I like my food hot and this was served cold. The chicken however was seasoned to perfection and done but still moist. I would love to try their sides. but cannot mentally do it with the grime and grit on the floors and the dirty glass. case they keep the food in. read more

Amazing! Both times I visited, I bought 2 carne asada tacos and a chicken & cheese papusa. Both are phenomenal. Best in the area! The first time, the tacos were served on homemade corn tortillas, and the second time they were served on store bought corn tortillas, but both were delicious. It seems a bit weird that they'd be served on different ones. Maybe they were out of homemade tortillas? They have "american style" tacos with cheese, sour cream, lettuce etc. or regular/Mexican/traditional with onions, cilantro, and salsa, so be sure to specify. Peruvian Chicken/Pollo a la Brasa has been one of the things that has anchored me to the Area. Unlike, speed cameras/parking tickets which try to push me away. In the past I have been gushing praise of some places and very critical of Sardi's as it positions itself in front. That is a roundabout or contextual way of explaining how I ended up at Marcela's. From the outside Marcela's looks like a take-out only spot but there is a very spacious dining room. The outside is pretty shabby and the inside is also shabby. So much so that I had no desire to use the bathroom to wash my hands before the meal. I did a couple of cycles of Hanitizer but with this flu season I ventured into the restroom. Honestly, I was expecting to lose my appetite but the bathroom was as clean as it should have be. While waiting for the food Marcela's was undergoing a lunchtime rush. Everyone working there was rolling and it made me want my food even more. Here it came. A quarter chicken with plátanos and yuca frita. Seeing everyone else's plates come out, I could see that if you are in the market for Salvadorian dishes, this could be your spot. As someone that judges the chicken by the sauces offered, to get a plate of sodium and friedness sin salsas me dío pausa. After asking, the waitress brought over a squirt bottle of green sauce. Not dissimilar from the green sauce at other places but still, not the business. The Chicken and meal as a whole was aight. Nothing too special. I wasn't moved by the sauce. I did like that the chicken was flavorful. Well seasoned and whatnot. It just wasn't beyond average. It wasn't pricy so do try it out for yourself. read more

All I can say is that I'm so happy to have a jewel like this in my neighborhood. The customer service was great and the food was tasty. I only gave this place a four and not a five because although it was clean the atmosphere in the seating area is not a place that I would want to seat down and eat. Just not cozy enough for me personally, only your basic tables and chairs. I could also tell that the beans are freshly cooked from the bag and although great in flavor just not as soft as I like them to be...but trust I ate them all. Now that chicken...MANNNN I ate that thang clean to the bone. Would I go back??? HECK YEAH!!! And would I tell a friend....HECK YEAH!!! I love the food here. I normally get the pollo guisado (chicken stew) and lomo saltado, both of which were so flavorful. I once got the steak platter and it came with a whole strip of avocado, how cute! I also got curious and wanted to try the 'horchata drink', which I assumed would be more 'milky'-flavored, but instead was surprisingly different (really did not like it tbh). It basically tasted like wheaty and grainy 'cereal-water' (best way to explain it) with a hint of cinnamon. Was in the area and stopped at this hidden gem for a take-out order for an office meeting. The group running the place were very friendly and ensured that all of my order given over the phone was shown and packaged correctly. The amazing aroma from the Peruvian Chicken instantly hits you upon entering. The Chorizo tacos are amazing and pair great with the green hot chicken sauce. The burritos are easily the size of your forearm and got rave reviews from our group. The chicken is well seasoned and compares with the other solid Peruvian chicken spots in the area. We LUV Nando's, but Marcela's will make you drive from Laurel to Temple Hills several times a week, just for the chicken. I wouldn't care if I had sides to go with it its so good!
