I first dined here a couple of years ago for my birthday. While the food wasn't particularly memorable at the time, the bread service certainly was. Combined with the exceptional service and beautiful ambiance, the experience left a lasting impression and made me want to return for another try. That opportunity came this past Sunday. I originally planned to stop in for a drink and the bread service, but my boyfriend and I ended up ordering the Caesar salad and the Lobster Risotto as well. The bread service was just as amazing as I remembered. My boyfriend thoroughly enjoyed the Caesar salad, especially the freshly grated cheese, which he said was incredibly light and airy. As for the Lobster Risotto, it exceeded my expectations in both flavor and portion size. The risotto itself was somewhat mild on its own, but once I mixed in the herb butter, it became absolutely delicious. The lobster itself was very tender and tasty, I loved it. Walking into Marcel, one is transported to another world. A moody, retro, classic world where bowties are worn unironically in a setting that could best be described as a boxing gym renovated with industrial touches to become a steakhouse in the 1940s. That world could be anywhere. It could even be in Midtown West Atlanta. Service was impeccable. Servers knew we were celebrating our anniversary and were attentive and helpful when making tough menu choices. Pacing was definitely geared toward fine dining. 40 minutes between starters and entree was a BIT long, but it went by. Steak was wonderful (a porterhouse for 2), cooked to a perfect medium rare with seasoning appropriately calibrated to not overpower. East and west coast oysters were fresh and the Marcel salad to start was underdressed and lacked flavor (I enjoyed how they plopped a mound of bleu cheese on top to mix in; I pushed this aside which my server and I laughed about. He said he'd do the same. Maybe it's a sign). Hot bread service with a spreadable cheese and prosciutto was a nice touch. The French fries are probably the best I've ever had, and the asparagus was asparagus (slightly undersalted if anything). Chocolate cake was impressive in presentation but unremarkable for flavor and consistency. My wife enjoyed her decaf coffee as the best she's had at a restaurant, but her cocktail left something to be desired and was extremely tart. A Mexican coke was perfect enough for me. The pricing here is exorbitant. The price tag isn't necessarily a problem given the caliber of dining experience and ambiance that Marcel provides, but given some of the misses on staple items (namesake salad, "famous" chocolate cake), I'm not sure that value for dollar spent is present. In transparency, our dinner comprised of the above was over $400 with tip, which was aligned with expectations walking in the door. Whether the food stood up to the actual place and pricing is a debate. I lean toward an answer of "almost, but close enough not to be insulted." If a gun was pointed at my head to pick the "best steakhouse" in Atlanta, I'd pick Bones without thinking twice. This place is a close second probably, but places like Nowaks in Sandy Springs, while not the same echelon of formality, might have Marcel beat on flavor and definitely have Marcel beat on value for the dollar. Marcel was absolutely impeccable. I had been aiming to cross this restaurant off our our list and today was the day I was able to do that. It did not disappoint - in fact, it exceeded my expectations. First of all, Ken was an excellent server. He was paced, attentive, informative, and communicative throughout our experience. We were also celebrating our anniversary, and he and the staff made sure to make the occasion memorable (won't give away to keep it special for you). The food was amazing from beginning to end. First, the bread service was prompt, warm, soft, and served with ricotta. Next, the Ceasar salad was made next to where we sat - and to see them mixing the salads so meticulously down to mixing the dressing from scratch was one of the most amazing dining experiences I've had. I love a good Ceasar - and this was amongst the best. We also ordered the Oysters Marcel - and they were so fresh and bright. For our main course, my wife ordered the bone-in filet. It was cooked to perfection (medium rare - medium). I enjoyed redfish topped with Jump Lump Crab Oscar sauce (with crabs). Both proteins were amazing, but I was surprised by how perfectly cooked the fish was. Delectable. For sides, we enjoyed Cream Corn Gratin and Pommes Frites Béarnaise . Both were complementary of the proteins. The dessert was a 10-Layer Chocolate Cake. It was sooo good. Sweet but not too sweet. Good as it looks. Lastly, the ambiance was amazing. It was like stepping into a portal into a different space in time - almost made you forget we were in Atlanta. It's a bit dark inside - but a well lit darkness - just like I like it. I ran the best restaurant with the highest food quality through Claude and this was one of the recommendations. This steakhouse did not disappoint! It's an old school steakhouse vibe. I found a Casablanca book near the hostess stand. The service was fantastic. Everyone was so nice and the service was pretty quick. They checked on us frequently and ensured our water never ran low. We had to try everything while we were here lol Appetizers: Escargot - I didn't try this but my coworker said it was the best he's ever had! He's a foodie that travels all over the world so that says a lot. Crab Mayo - this was really good! It came with chunks of crab and had a smooth and creamy taste to it. You can eat it straight or on top of a cracker. Snow crab was pretty good. It had a little creamy/tangy sauce at the bottom Caesar was pretty good. It didn't stand out and was pretty standard. Main Dish: The steaks have a red wine roux on the bottom. It doesn't had that much flavor to it but maybe keeps it juicy. We got the truffle butter and it paired with the steaks so well. I thought the wine roux would've clashed with it, but it went well with the steak. Filet - this was so good! It was so tender and cooked and seasoned perfectly. This is definitely the hit Ribeye - I'm usually a ribeye girl, but I wasn't impressed with this. It was chewy and pretty tough. Sides: We got the pommes dauphaunois which is a scalloped potato. It was a little too cheesy and rich. You can only eat a little with the steak but definitely can't finish a whole dish The corn gratin would be a pass next time. It had an odd taste. It was a little sour maybe from sour cream and had a grainy texture. The flavors weren't really flowing together Desserts: The crème brûlée and chocolate cake were probably the best I've ever had. There's paid parking in the westside provisions deck and the line was long but it moved fairly quickly and I was very impressed by the staff and service given the volume of people that showed up for the popup! Inside, Marcel is very moody and classic steakhouse vibes. My friends and I were seated quickly and we all ordered the cheeseburger, 2 orders of fries with sauce to share, and chocolate shakes. The lobster risotto was amazing and easily one of the best parts of the night. The chocolate cake was also a standout. Rich, indulgent, and worth it. We were greet kindly by the host team and had to wait an only few minutes while they prepped our table. It allowed for us to snap a few birthday photos. Reservations are highly suggested if you want the full dinning experience, or else you could sit in the bar area. We were taken care of by Ken and Todd. Ken was very personable and knowledgeable of the menu. He offered us drinks and gave us time to peruse the menu before returning to give us his highlights. Our whole order was taken at one time so that the kitchen could course out our meal timely. We started with the escargot which was a first for both of us. Ken assured us that their Chef was well versed in preparing them and that it was a popular favorite. It was interesting, not bad, and I enjoyed them, but my wife said she could do without them. We then had a Caesar salad which prepared table side by Todd and it was very fresh with the traditional anchovies which was a nice touch. For an entree we shared the bone-in filet with a side of asparagus and the lobster risotto split for two. All of it was amazing. We wanted to try the desert and specifically the crème brûlée but we were to full. In spite of that, our server still provided us a tasty treat with a candle to celebrate her day. We also ordered the strip which needed more seasoning in my opinion. Did the New Year's Eve prix fixe at Marcel with a late reservation for four. We were welcomed with Champagne while waiting for our table, which was a nice touch--though the wait itself (about 30 minutes) was the least enjoyable part since the place was packed. Once seated, the experience really took off. Our server, Kevin, was excellent--super knowledgeable, walked us through the menu and pairings, and even shared a bit of Marcel's history. The first course was a win across the board: caviar, raw oysters, crab mayonnaise, and steak tartare. Everything was fresh and flavorful, especially the tartare, which melted in your mouth. I followed the drink pairings, which meant plenty of Champagne. Second course included escargot, prawns, scallops, and stewed beef cheek, paired with a velvety Cabernet Sauvignon. Not usually an escargot fan, but it was solid. The beef cheek was the standout--tender, juicy, and rich, with oxtail-like flavors. Easily my favorite bite of the night. We had to leave before midnight to catch fireworks at the Signia Hotel, so the remaining courses came home with us: Salade Marcel, a huge 30oz tomahawk steak, jumbo lump crab cake, broccolini, and au gratin potatoes. We kicked things off with a quick apertif and beer, then came the complimentary bread. I was in Atlanta for a fun weekend with friends and sought the advice of locals on the best steakhouse. After hearing Marcel's name again and again, I made a reservation for last night. When our Uber dropped us off, I still wasn't sure if we were at the right place. Then I noticed a small sign with an M and a boxer on the second floor. So up the stairs we went. I'll say this, from the outside, this doesn't look like a great location, but once you enter the restaurant you are transported back in time to a European dinner theater. If you ever watched Mad Men, you could envision Don Drapper sipping a martini here. The restaurant is named after Marcel Cerdan, a French boxer and national hero who popularized beefsteak dinners. The design of the napkins, matchboxes and menus reference the boxer. Atlanta restauranteur Ford Fry is renowned for his collection of high-end restaurants and is the creative force behind Marcel. It has been opened since 2015. Each table is served by a waiter and a captain, decked out in a black tux. Sonny, our captain, was straight out of central casting. He had the French accent you'd expect in such a place. I just wish his review of the menu didn't take so long and he specified some of the house signatures. We started our meal with the bread service that was truly unique. It was served with prosciutto, whipped feta and olives. Next up were East and West Coast oysters with a variety of sauces. I still can't tell the difference, so I guess I need to eat more of each. I've heard that the Oysters Marcel, Steak Tartare and Bone Marrow are all awesome choices from the starter section. We ordered a split Salad Marcel and it seemed like it could have been split again. Huge portion. We had a hard time tasting the bacon vinaigrette. I wish I had seen the Onion Soup Gratinee below it and ordered that. When my wife and I dine at a steakhouse, we love to order a bone-in ribeye. Although that specific cut wasn't on the menu, the 30-ounce Tomahawk called our names. It arrived at the table still sizzling in its coating of butter. Perfectly grilled and sliced. Super flavorful and tender. For $100 less, you could try the amazing L'Entrecote, which is a ribeye cut with French fries. We were told the sides can serve two to three. I'd correct our Captain and say they could serve four to six. We ordered the Cauliflower Gratinee and our dining partners ordered the Pommes Dauphinoise, which Sonny said was the best of four potato options. It's basically potatoes au gratin. The crust on top was super yummy. I would say that the French fries and Bearnaise are supposedly the best in the city. Guess I'll need to order that next time. There were no lags in our service, nor were we looking for someone to refill our water glasses or take another cocktail order. I noticed a number of men dressed in suits that I assumed were managers, but they never stopped by our table to check in on us. To close out our evening we tried a variety of desserts, including the incredible Ten Layer Chocolate Cake, Crème Brulee and the Apple Pudding Cake. All were outstanding. The service was top tier however took a while for the food to come out. All I can say is WOW! I started planning a Valentine's Day dinner for my wife and I six months ago. We had heard so many great things about Marcel, but even with high expectations, we were completely blown away. On the way to dinner, our car was hit and we ended up missing our reservation by over an hour. I messaged the Marcel team to explain what happened and asked--without much hope--if there was any chance we could still come in. Two minutes later, the restaurant called. They told us how sorry they were about the accident, asked us to drive safely, and assured us they would take care of us. And they absolutely did. Although they were fully booked, they seated us at a table near the bar so we could enjoy cocktails and decompress while they worked on fitting us in. The general manager, Vinnie, personally spent time with us--offering kindness, checking on us, and even giving helpful advice about navigating car repairs since his family owns a body shop. Within 15 minutes, they had found us a table and exceeded every expectation we had. Our servers, Mark and Saul, demonstrated the true meaning of hospitality. Mark welcomed us with complimentary glasses of champagne to celebrate that we were safe. It was such a thoughtful touch. At one point, I asked Saul about a station nearby where servers were preparing something but we couldn't tell what. She explained it was their "table adjacent" Caesar salad station. My wife and I enjoyed watching the team craft these beautiful salads--and not ten minutes later, Saul surprised us with two that we hadn't ordered because she said that she "noticed us eyeing them" and wanted us to try them. Simply accommodating us would have been generous. Instead, they made sure that by the end of the evening, we had completely forgotten the stress of our afternoon. At one point they even said, "If you don't leave happy, we aren't doing our jobs right." We left very happy. For the main course, we went with the T-bone steak paired with lobster. Perfectly cooked. Perfectly executed. At that point, words were unnecessary. The food spoke for itself. This was not our first time dining at Marcel, but it was absolutely one to remember. The consistency, the attention to detail, the level of service, and the quality of the food continue to set the standard. One important note: make the reservation. This is not the kind of experience you want to leave to chance. You do not want to miss the opportunity simply because you did not secure your spot. So extremely overrated! Felt the need to do my duty to level-set expectations by leaving a review, since this is not a 4-4.5 star steakhouse in the slightest. I know my steakhouses but don't know Atlanta steakhouses well; I will say that Bones is leagues better than this. Besides drinks, I ordered their bone marrow, their dry aged ribeye, and their potato aligote. The bone marrow was absolutely flavorless. The steak was not comparable to dry aged steak found elsewhere, no umami. The potato aligote was excellent; in fact, it was the best part of the meal. Yes, let that sink in: the best part of the meal at this steakhouse was the potatoes... The drink I got was akin to an old fashioned and was 10-20x worse than the one I make at home. The experience itself wasn't great either. The tables are so close together and the waiter at the table right next kept going right between our table and the next to service his table, touching his rear end to our table. I was flabbergasted. This was truly an amazing dinner! The waiter was attentive, the food was excellent, and the ambiance was excellent! We ordered the Beef Wellington, which has to be ordered 24 hours ahead of time, and it was superb! The sides and cocktails were also good. Very nice date and celebratory spot! We had one night in Atlanta and I asked a few people where was the best place for dinner; unanimous "Marcel". This lived up to the hype and more. The manager immediately greeted us, Jimmy, and he was so kind. The vibe inside is moody, intimate and trendy with a French/American gentleman's steakhouse vibe. They have a row of 1/2 booth tables near the bar to have a cocktail while waiting for your reservation that's cozy and a perfect transition into dinner. We were lucky enough to get a cozy booth on the front wall so we could enjoy the environment of all the amazing waitstaff and other diners. Our served Mark (he is the best, ask for him!) filled us in on the history of the restaurant as well as notes on the menu. We came hungry but since it was just the two of us we couldn't quite order all the items I wanted to try. They start with a really interesting bread service; a pan fried homemade focaccia w/ speck, whipped ricotta and olives. Heavy for a bread round, but a really nice amuse bouche and proof of the chefs skills. Their daily oyster selection was phenomenal, so I started with 1/2 a dozen of those and the cocktail, hot sauce and mignonette were all homemade. Exceptionally clean, chilled and tasty oysters! We shared the dining room prepared Caesar salad which was phenomenal; 1 was plenty to share if you're having a lot of courses. Mark said the other salad (market I think) had 21 ingredients and was the star of the show, but I'm not a bacon girl, so we had the Caesar! We moved on to the mains: a filet (wood fired and then finished in a pan with brown butter - are u drooling? I am just remembering!). For sides we did the potatoes dauphinoise and the cacio e Pepe. Both large and delectable. The sauces were so fresh, homemade and rich in the best way. Along this culinary journey we had some spectacular cocktails and for our steak Mark gave us a few wine samples so we appropriately pair some red wine with our steak. The Cab and the Bordeaux blend were perfection. We were honestly so full after dinner, but Mark said my magic dessert words "butter cake". It was a raspberry butter cake with a lemon raspberry crumble, vanilla anglaise and vanilla ice cream. My bf also got to try the 10 layer chocolate cake with layers of light chocolate mousse. I quote "the best chocolate cake I've ever had". So there you have it. Definitely make the reservation and check out Marcels. Well that was....fine...I guess. And at this price point, level of hype, and with a Michelin recommendation to boot, "fine" is a not so coded nod toward disappointment. What the experience lacked from a service and overall quality standpoint was almost made up for by the food...almost. But anxiety being the predominant reaction to a restaurant experience is not ideal. To orient my point of view here, I spend a lot of time in NYC. This would be a shocking experience somewhere there. It makes me question what I've always said, ie "Atlanta has better restaurant experiences dollar for dollar" given that I've had far better experiences there and elsewhere for less outlay. Our on-time arrival was met with a "tables are running late." OK, cool - for 10 minutes. Not 30. A well-heeled restaurant with a long reservation list would manage this better. It would also have a host stand manned by someone that didn't just seem dismissive. When you keep a group of guests waiting for 30 minutes - and you're about to seat them in a room they didn't ask for - you offer them a drink. You apologize for the wait and the location. You do SOMETHING. Not a thing. That set the tone for the experience and it was consistent throughout. It was almost as if they expected us to be thankful to be there and allowed to spend so much for the opportunity. If you deliver, OK...but.... The food was good (beef Wellington) and some of it was great (Caesar salad, scallops). The cocktail and wine - also good. But the coursing was...challenged. Wine for dinner arrived before the appetizers. The cocktail and wine for the appetizers came halfway through eating them. The cocktail was warm. And again, no one apologized for the timing. Now add on that they "just" ran out of the burger we built our order and coursing around...after not sitting until 30 minutes after our reservation and having to wait another 10 to speak to someone - and, well, that was annoying but not shocking in the course of this experience. For perspective: reservation at 8 - still no entree at 945. Total spend almost $800 including gratuity and I feel a bit like I got taken for a ride. Would I go back? If someone else plans it and it's what they want, OK. Will it be with excitement or anxiety...the latter. read more

Very special night. Amazing service ... never felt rushed. The waiter was very helpful with the menu. The location is hidden up the stairs. Dark, candle lit, and an old speakeasy feel. We started with martinis at the bar as we were there a little early. Mixed perfectly. Moved to the table where they serve a few pre dinner options .. olives, prosciutto and bread. We added an amaretto sour with a foam topping. The Caesar salad was tasy. The onion soup was a little salty for my taste. Dinner was a bone in ribeye and strip. Both cooked perfectly and seasoned well. The side was mashed potatoes. I give it 5 stars because it was a great experience. Do I feel it was $400 great? No. The prices are ridiculous. read more

An Evening of Misfortune Met with Extraordinary Grace On the evening of Thursday, November 6th, my daughter and I arrived at Marcel's in Atlanta around 8 PM for a small celebration. As I walked up the steps, I misjudged one and fell hard -- both knees split open, bleeding, and in severe pain. What could have been a ruined night was transformed by one of the most extraordinary teams I've ever encountered. Emily was the first to my side with the first-aid kit, calm, gentle, and genuinely concerned. She made sure my daughter and I were cared for and even saved our seats while I cleaned myself up. Vinny, the General Manager, approached with the composed kindness of a true leader. He offered anything within his power to help and checked on me throughout the night. Ryan brought me an ice pack he personally prepared and promised it would never melt -- returning again and again with fresh ice, each time as attentive as the last. And Brandon, at the bar, was remarkable. His drink and food recommendations were spot-on, and his warmth, timing, and energy helped lighten a painful evening in ways I truly appreciated. Though I spent the night in considerable discomfort, their care never wavered. I have rarely seen a team so perfectly in sync -- thoughtful, coordinated, and genuinely compassionate. Despite my fall, I left Marcel's deeply grateful. We will absolutely return for a proper do-over, because excellence like this deserves to be enjoyed without injury.
