I guess I'm not the first person to accidentally wander over from Salsa and Beer. I'm rating this only on their halavat jibne aka halawet el jibn. For years, I've gotten this from Sarkis Pastry, but I was always on the lookout for something closer to the valley--and I finally found it! It's a clean little shop and there was a steady stream of customers picking things up before the holidays. Beware there's very little parking. There was lots of variety behind the counter, but I was focused. The two women working there were friendly and helpful getting me a little tray from the fridge. They packed it up with some pistachios and a tub of syrup. The price for halavat jibne is typical at $15/pound. Their style is a little firmer on the outside with a delicious ashta interior and a fine sprinkle of pistachios. I'm so glad to find this! read more

I have no idea how long this business has been in the area, but I wish I knew about them sooner. My friend and I were in the area because I was introducing her to neighboring Salsa and Beer. We were interested in dessert, and so a bakery surely would be a promising solution for sweet tooth-havers. This place sells all sorts of sweets, but my eyes were drawn to their selection of baklava. I had only discovered my love for baklava this year after having it made by a former coworker, and it showed me that when done properly, it will not be overbearingly sweet, but rather satiate my sweet tooth and further delight with the rich flavor of nuts. This prior experience prompted me to, of course, select a large tray of baklava to share, which we enjoyed at a nearby park. The variety present in the baklava was astounding. Different types of nuts delivered such different eating experiences, all welcome. Baklava is about the texture, and Maral's Pastry's baklava is flaky, crunchy, chewy, and delicious. You certainly pay for the quality of the baklava, and this baklava is quality. If I ever get invited to a party with people that I like, I would opt to bring that baklava tray. I just moved here from Illinois, and saw this shop while waiting to get into Salsa and Beer. Got two small fruit tarts, an apricot rugala, and a chocolate one. Oh. My. Lanta. The tart was so light, the filling so delicate, not overly sweet, which made the fruit really shine. Perfectly balanced. The rugala was light of crumb and melted in my mouth. My 4 year old had the chocolate one. Suffice to say, it didnt last long. They really know their stuff here. I look forward to returning. read more

I wish I could give 100 stars! I found this place on Saturday and it is so good that I went back on Monday and Tuesday! They have fresh Nazook and it is amazing. Whenever I had Nazook from any other place I would microwave it to soften it and eat it but this one is so fresh and so good you can just eat it. It is really addicting. Their choreg is insane. If you go there and get one bag, I promise, you will be there the next day buying more. They also have fresh cookies and all kinds of middle eastern treats. I love coming here because I love supporting small businesses and my Armenian people! Came here today because I didn't want to drive all the way out to Burbank to visit Porto's. I've been in a quest to find a local Pasteur so that I can satisfy my sweet tooth without having to make an hour round trip. This is a small little shop located in the back corner. Although there's only three small cases of desserts, they all looked delicious. I opted for the baklava (~$14.50 per lb.), a piece of tiramisu, and a coconut cookie ($1.50 each). Paid $7.50 total. There was a variety of tiramisu and I picked out four little squares. I ate the coconut cookie immediately upon leaving and was blown away at how delicious it was. Incredible. If they were priced at $1 each I would go back and buy 5 more, but at 1.50 each I would only allow myself to purchase one at a time. After the finger-licking coconut cookie, I had high hopes for the rest of my treats. Unfortunately, I was incredibly underwhelmed with everything else. I don't think you could even call the tiramisu and tiramisu as it had no mascarpone cheese or coffee liqueur. The very bottom layer was slightly tinted brown like someone had maybe dropped a few splashes of coffee onto it but the taste was not there. It was basically an overpriced white cake with whipped cream. I was extremely disappointed with it, and for the price, it was a ripoff. The baklava was good, nothing to write home about. The sheets are flaky and crisp, and the filling is good. A little short on the honey syrup but still tasted good. I'll probably finish them off tomorrow, they aren't so good that I can't keep my hands off them. Overall, I think I may return to pick up another coconut cookie once in a while, but that's probably all that I'd buy. I guess I'm still looking for a local place that can satisfy my cravings. TL;DR Buy the coconut cookie. Incredibly delicious. Baklava is okay. Nothing special. Avoid the "tiramisu". No mascarpone or coffee liqueur. read more

I would give it NO STARS, but give it 1 star for the original nice lady employee I spoke with at the store and initiated my order with. An awful place to go mainly because of the owner Maral who has NO clue how to treat her customers, make them happy, especially for RETURN OF BUSINESS. Her street tough manner of speaking to me was totally Outrageous and Unacceptable. I stopped by the store 2 weeks earlier and I spoke to a totally different well mannered lady who I guess was an employee of the store and she let me order their Big Triangle Boreg's with cheese and with no Red Pepper (I'm allergic to it) and she said no problem, gave me the store card and said all I have to do is call a day before and she'll make sure to have it ready for me. So I called on Friday and apparently another lady the owner Maral answered the phone (didn't know it was her) and when I wanted to order the food she ADAMENTLLY refused to do it and said they ONLY do the Cheese Boregs as a square even though the other nice lady said I could!!!! I went ahead and cautiously ordered it as she said, wanted cheese Boregs badly! I went there on Saturday and apparently the owner Maral (again didn't know) was u[front , gave my name, then she brought a small bag with about 3 inches wide pastry looking 2 boregs with Sesame seeds on them, didn't look like a boreg at all. I saw them and I told the owner what I was expecting a bigger size, she started raising her voice saying I TOLD YOU we only make square size cheese, I said well that's not what I expected but I'll buy them anyway. She Immediately took the bag off the counter and angrily said you don't have to buy them!!!! I was stunned with her Unacceptable behavior and I asked for her name and she said I'm Maral!!! I tried a variety of their pastries since it was my first time there. They attended me so sweetly and gave me good recommendations. Their fruit tart has the freshest fruits and a delicious crust. Ive been coming here for at least 5-6 years. You won't believe it but they make this pastry that i think it's their best item which I love but I still can't remember or learned the name with very difficult pronunciation. It's white rolls cut up in little pieces with some kind of cheese or custard cheese or even cream cheese maybe inside and you can only buy it in treys small or large. It's always made fresh every day and they store it in the fridge as soon as you walk in on your right. Then they ask if you want pistachios on top (recommended). And they give you this syrup so when you ready to eat maybe 5-6 at a time, you pour 1 tea spoon on top and enjoy every bite. Omg it's delicious. I'm drooling thinking about it. So, we decided to pick up some dessert first, since Maral's was still open. Little did we know that they were about to close...as soon as we walked in there, we quickly found out that they closed at 7:00pm (it was already 7:00). We did our window-shopping as quickly as possible and decided upon three desserts to try: a mixed fruit tart, a chocolate "snowball", and a piece of tiramisu. Mixed fruit tart: Yum! Almost on par with Viktor Benes Bakery @ Gelson's! Chocolate "snowball": good, but not my favorite of the 3. This one got the bronze medal in its age group. Tiramisu: runner-up for sure. A close second place behind the fruit tart! At the end of the day, when we're ever at Salsa & Beer again, I'll pop in if I need a dessert fix. They open at 7 a.m. and close at 8:00 p.m which was very convenient for me because I was able to pick up some pastries at 7:30 pm. Pastries are fresh and wont disappoint.
