Before I get into the details of the picture shown, I need to mention that accidents happen and sometimes they happen on the day you really don't want it to- but it does. As long as no lives were lost, and no fights were involved all is fine. For us all is fine. There was a terrible event that happened; but, it was addressed very sincerely. I ordered a quarter sheet flagship Berries and Cream cake withe customized details on the cake. It was a birthday cake for 3 people. Shivon showed me a sample of what I would see. It was beautiful. Unfortunately, on the way to our house, the driver had a near accident. The cake was ruined. We needed the (surprise) birthday cake at the house before the birthday people came to the house so it would not be seen. The driver was supposed to be at my house before 10:00AM. He was making good time; but when 10:05 came, we started getting worried. When he did arrive he showed us the smashed cake you see in the picture. I sent the picture to Shivon and she sounded like she was going to have a heart attack! She profusely apologized and told me she was going to make this better. She went overboard!! I supposed knowing that there were 3 birthday people she made 3 separate different flavored small round cakes (not that little I might add!), a dozen cupcakes . I am not a fan of sweets; but, all of the cakes and cupcakes I tasted were excellent! And yes, per the menu very expensive- but for the quality, so worth it. I wish I had taken pictures of the cakes she sent. But, we were rushing around so much by that time, I couldn't. The driver however took pictures. So, if Shivon can get them up on this post, you will be able to see what I mean by going overboard! Shivon is more than just a salesperson she is a very sincere and empathetic person. We will definitely be back. The only reason why I gave 4 stars is that the delivery person should have contacted Shivon as soon as it was known that the cake was ruined so she could have started on a new cake, or at least prepared Shivon for a situation that she would not have had to freak out on! It was our dad's 80th birthday so since it was a special occasion we decided to get him a special cake to celebrate. The cake we ordered was the Triple Berry cake. From an aesthetic perspective, the cake was beautifully prepared and would make a perfect center piece dessert for any dinner party, birthday party or special occasion. The frosting is dense yet still melts in your mouth and provides a wonderful contrast to the soft and moist cake with fruit filling. Our only gripe was one of the strawberries that was used for the inside of the cake had gone bad and spoiled the flavor for a portion of the cake. My niece had some choice words to describe the flavor she experienced and she stopped eating after biting into that rancid strawberry. After sniffing things out and scraping away the offending fruit layer, I finished the rest of her slice without any issue. read more

There's not a birthday gathering without a cake from Sweet Lady Jane. It's a tradition for us whenever there's a gathering that requires a cake. Whether it be birthday, baby showers, engagement and so on. It's our go to place for picking up a cake. They're always elegantly decorated and of course so tasty. Not only cakes, there's other pastries as well. Cupcakes, cookies, croissants and many more flavorful sweets. I used to alway pick up from the West Hollywood location as I was closer to there. Now that there's the Encino location, makes it easier. There was a time when they all closed down but thankfully that changed and they're back. This location is part of a strip mall so there's loads of parking available. A small little seating area outside but more inside. Then you have the amazing pastries on hands. They're have majority of the cakes available on site but if it's a special order, a few days before is recommended. Service is alway amazing. Cakes are exceptional and very filling. A slice goes a long way. Of course the favorite, the triple berry cake which is one of their specialty items. I just notice this time picking up a cake that it also comes in a cheesecakes. May need to give that a try next time. But regardless whatever you choose, you'll alway make a good choice. Pricewise has gone up but it's a given as it's everywhere. read more

I got 6 but almost forgot to take a picture I had already eaten 2 when I realized " these pastries need to be put on the screen. I didn't observe the ambiance since it was a delivery. But if you want a good Birthday Cake go traditional and order custom from Hansens in Tarzana. They can make pretty contemporary things that taste really good or Susie cakes and Milk bar are pretty good for Birthday cakes. read more

Every once in a while you just have to treat yourself to something that makes your senses happy. You can't help but smile when you walk into SLJ. It's a little pricey for sure but here's where that you-get-what-you-pay-for slogan gets used. The cookies, tarts, pastries and croissants are absolutely amazing. And, you can get a slice of most of the cakes on display. They are also well known for creating cakes to order for special occasions. And, there's really no one else at this level. The cake was overpriced for the quality. I don't mind paying for a good cake, but this one was honestly mediocre. For comparison, SusieCakes are much better. I ordered a 6-inch cake for $90, and unfortunately the fruit was not fresh. The raspberries tasted old and past their prime, and the strawberries on top also looked aged. Overall, it did not taste or look like a freshly made cake. For the price, I expected much better quality and freshness. read more

I used to really love SLJ, but sadly the quality has gone downhill. I was a fan back to the Melrose location when it was like $5 a slice . Lately I'm in the valley, so I only visit the Encino location. Some of the cakes in the display are cracked and look improperly frozen and defrosted - unappetizing. The slices are smaller and inconsistent quality. The berry cheesecake is hit or miss with the amount of berry. The cherry pie is still good but smaller slices. The recent slice of carrot cake I got had mostly frosting. My old favorites used to be the triple berry (but now look cracked all the time and old), carrot cake, princess cake, coconut cake, and cherry pie. Please work on improving ... I am hopeful for your survival under new ownership. read more

Found MOLD in my slice of cake. For my birthday, I wanted to try the different cakes that they offered, so I decided to order a variety of 4 slices which was put into one box. I emailed management with this mold issue, and was hoping they would at the very least offer a complimentary slice for the inconvenience and traumatizing experience, but instead they just offered the bare minimum of a refund. They claim they make their cakes fresh daily which now I find hard to believe as it takes time for mold to form... I hate to write this review, but the Sweet Lady Jane I fell in love with is no longer here. I was super excited to return after their reopening, but it just wasn't the same... We ordered a very large slice (the last) of red velvet, and it tasted terrible. It was dry, tasteless, and felt like a waste of such a beautifully decorated slice of cake. We also ordered a sprinkles cupcake and an oatmeal cookie. Of these three items, the cookie was the best, but it was hardly a standout. I hope this was an isolated case, but until the next time, if there is one, this is my sad but true opinion. read more

My daughter in law ordered an apple pie and a pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving. She also ordered 3 maple decorated sugar cookies for the kids. The pies looked lovely out of the box. I was very disappointed with the crust. Very thick and almost gummy. The apples were undercooked. The pumpkin filling was good. The cookies were not soft at all and seemed almost old. I used to visit the Melrose Ave location a few years back, and their desserts and pies were hands down my favourites in all of L.A. The mixed berry pie and blueberry pie were always perfectly done -- juicy on the inside with that lovely crunch on the outside. I was also a huge fan of the mixed berry chocolate cake; it was moist and rich. The banana pudding jar was generously portioned back then, and the lemon bars and sea salt brownies quickly became my go-tos. Even the English trifle was quite good. Unfortunately, over the years, the portions noticeably shrank--almost by half. After they changed ownership, I thought I'd give it another go and ordered from this location. Sadly, it just wasn't the same. It's still decent, but it no longer has that standout flavour or texture I remembered. The mixed berry chocolate cake was drier and less tender, and the banana pudding jar had a slightly bitter, almost alcoholic note. The pies were smaller and lacked the juiciness and the balanced ratio of crust to fruit that made them so memorable before. I was sad and disappointed. read more

I ordered two slices of the triple berry cake for delivery. I have ordered both whole cakes and slices from SLJ in the past and familiar with their quality. What was delivered was unacceptable. The cake was old and the berries were mush. The slices were anemic and less than half the sizes I have purchased before. The pastries here are decorated and presented well. However, I picked up a cupcake and was not impressed. The cake portion was dry and the frosting tasted grainy and oily. Overall the cupcake did not have a lot of flavor, just straight up sugar. For the quality, it is overpriced. I could make better cupcakes. Other than the quality, this Sweet Lady Jane shop is nice and convenient with parking. Just wish the taste was on par with everything else. read more

I really wanted to like this place, but unfortunately my experience at the Sweet Lady Jane in Encino was very disappointing. Everything felt overpriced and the quality didn't come close to matching the cost. I ordered an omelette with chives, plus salmon and cream cheese, which came out to over $22--and it was cold, bland, and almost inedible. I also asked for a double shot of espresso, but what I received was the most watery cup of coffee possible. When I mentioned it, the waiter blamed their "very expensive espresso machine," which wasn't reassuring. To top it off, I tried a mini brownie with sea salt (and I mean really mini, about half an inch) for nearly $3, and it was so hard my teeth practically got stuck in it. Honestly, I don't understand how they think this business model works--high prices, low quality, and very little care put into the food. Extremely disappointed, and I won't be coming back. read more

This is the first time I've visited this location (Encino) in a few years. I stopped by yesterday (7/4) to pick up a slice of cherry pie. The price was about $12.95.. which I didn't think too much of it because the slices were generous in the past, at least at the Santa Monica location. I was really shocked to see the very small piece in the box once I got home. I love SLJ, been coming to them for 18+ years. I'm hoping this was just an oversight because the price doesn't seem right for the amount you get. On a side note, the pie was good not too sweet or tart. read more

The service was lacking, the raspberry almond tart was sickly sweet, the Oreo cheesecake had freezer burn and the coconut macaroon could've been used to stone someone and cause real damage. I wanted to buy a cheesecake for a friend's birthday, and found this page on Yelp as being close by. I assumed it would be an independent bakery, and wasn't expecting anything different. Turns out it's a 35 year old 7-store mini-chain that has a rabid fan following, including several celebrities. I got sticker shock when they told me that they had one the one size for the cheesecake, which is quite large, and that it would be $76! Despite the big price tag, I was driven by my need to appease the birthday person with something they would appreciate: cheesecake. So, I relented, and paid for the obviously very expensive cheesecake that didn't even have hidden gold or anything fancy inside it.
