I am going to let you in on a little secret…read more... Yeah, I'm going to share with you what i THINK is the best kind of getaway, well, at least in my humble opinion. It's the kind that doesn't abruptly end, but it just sort of.... keeps on going. Let me explain. Have you ever gone on vacation and said to yourself, or to your spouse or even to your kids.... "Gee, I could have really used one more night" Or Let out the exaggerated (Ughh)... "I don't want to go back to work tomorrow, I wish we could just extend our trip by just one more day" Well... On a recent trip with my family, We INTENTIONALLY did just that. My wife booked us a 2 night stay in Paso Robles at a beautiful boutique style/chain hotel. (The Ava Hotel in Paso) (Check out my review for the deets) Usually, when we do these short, weekend trips, I work up until the day of our trip and then go back the very next day once we return... But, NOT THIS TIME! Yeah, This time, my wife intentionally told me, let's book one more night on the way home from our trip in Paso just to break up the drive home and enjoy one more day off of work and time with the fam. Heck, I've got loads of PTO and who wants to be at work anyway, so it wasn't too hard to twist my arm on this one. And just like that.... Solvang, Here we Come! Yes, the cute, quaint town of Solvang is the perfect destination for a weekend getaway or even just for a one night stay like we did. Of course, my wife, the Queen of finding the best places to stay/eat... (AND I AM THE ONE WHO IS THE "ELITE" haha) booked us a room at the Landsby hotel and it was nothing short of a treat. Here's why: The Landsby is more than just a room... Inside of a hotel... Located in the heart of this Danish town known as: SOLVANG It wasn't just, "let's build a hotel where the people can stay and explore the town while they are here". At least that's not the impression it gave me! Instead, The Landsby has a Charm about, it has Character and most of all it gives you the impression that you are in a modern-day Dutch village. But one of my favorite parts.... The Room Key, keyword, "KEY" Yeah! The room key is an actual Key!!! A metal, lock and key, just like the good 'ol days! Ain't no digital, pre-programmed, modern day, technologically advanced system like every other hotel does it.... And I liked it! And to match the old school style key... The t.v is in black and white, the internet is run on dial up and the telephone is a rotary dial..... JUST KIDDING!!!! But wouldn't that be cool! Aside from the small town European vibe that the exterior of the building gives you, once you step inside both the hotel and then your room, you are immediately transported to a place that feels welcoming, familiar and most of all comfortable. Because this was a short stay (just a one nighter) we didn't take advantage of the amenities like we normally do, but next time we will. A lobby bar (our favorite place to check out), an onsite restaurant (Mad & Vin which loos really good), an outdoor courtyard to sit and relax, and complimentary cruiser bikes to explore the town. The Landsby is Pet friendly, so definitely check out their webpage for details for your furry friends. So....... Now that I've let you in on my little secret, I don't want you to keep it that way! Spread the word! Pass it along! Tell a friend! Come check out the Landsby in Solvang!!

The location couldn't be better, right in the heart of town and close to everything. My only downside was a very loud neighbor that disrupted my first night. Overall, I'm really glad I stayed here and would absolutely come back for another Solvang trip.

Check in process can be challenging. They text me the same day of check in to ask me for my email and a credit card. I was not comfortable replying as I thought it might be spam. I waited until I arrived. I had to call a number, and provide my credit card for incidentals over the phone. I was hoping they would have a check in machine similar to vegas hotels since no live staff. It was pretty loud to hear as another group was trying to check in too. I am giving a 3 due to service. The balcony door's lock was not working. I text them when we checked in to report issue with no response. The hotel room was beautiful and pleasant. I loved the nespresso coffee, the lounge area. They also had a reading lounge. Everything was artistic with great color, very new and clean. Another issue I had was that I booked through a 3rd party and prepaid room when over night I received an extra charge notification. When I called in the morning around 6:30 am I was advised no manger was available until 7 am and someone would call me then. I waited until 7:30 am as no one called me I called again. I was advised they were having systems issues with their app. Since it was a 3rd party the app was charging me the 3rd party charge. Which was $50 less what I paid to the 3rd party. I advised them I had already prepaid. They advised me they would release hold in 2-3 days. I called the 3rd party to advise the above. They called Winston staff as they shortly after sent me a text. I do believe Winston was in error to charge me while I had already paid the 3rd party. The funds were released the next day. Keep an eye on credit card notifications if stay here. Other than the above issue and Check in service I would stay here again. The room was comfortable with the exception of the balcony door not locking.

Upon checking in, we were told that the lounge & bar would be closed all weekend. This was a bummer, it is one of the reasons we booked the hotel originally. When we got to the room, the smell was awful. It smelled musty and moldy. We opened the window and turned on the air, that helped not one bit. So, we asked for a different room. They accommodated this request quickly, which was great. The hotel advertises electric vehicle charging stations. While this is true, they are NOT the fast charging ones, rather they are the type you install at your house. This means charging can take several hours. Thiscreates an annoying backlog situation - no one is going to sit around for hours while their vehicle charges. Inevitably, you go into town and return when you're ready, at which point your car is either still charging OR it has finished charging, but is now taking up a charger that might be needed. No one is going to run back to the hotel to unplug and move their car. Also, there are only two chargers and they are in the tightest, most inconvenient location in the parking lot. When I opened my trunk to put my bags in, the trunk lid HIT a large pipe running above the parking spot. They need far more chargers installed if they're going to advertise this amenity. When we returned to the hotel on our first evening, we got ZERO sleep. For one, the AC is very, very loud and goes off and on all night. On top of that, and this is what spoiled things actually, a dog in an adjoining room barked loudly ALL NIGHT LONG. It was unbearable. I called the front desk several times, and they didn't really seem to understand the gravity of the situation. They just said yea, it's very frustrating, we're trying to contact the owners, but nothing really resolved. We got no sleep and it was so frustrating. Operating on no sleep, we went out the next day to explore the town. When it got hot in the afternoon hours, we returned to the hotel to relax and get a nap in before dinner. But guess what? MORE DOG BARKING. For hours. And the same spiel from the front desk and management. So, no naps for us. It was beyond frustrating. After all that, the management offered no compensation or anything. They really didn't even address the dog barking except when I made the phone call to the front desk. It was all empty apologies and no action. All in all, it was a frustrating experience and I would hesitate to book there again.

I have been coming to Solvang with my family for many many years, it is no longer a vacation point…read morefor us, but a second home. This time around, we decided to stay at The Marlo. They are dog friendly & offer dog treats, water for the little buddies in the courtyard, and plenty of grass for them to play around in as well. Its situated away from the busy crowded part of Solvang, almost towards residential neighborhoods of Alisal Rd, giving that perfect quiet restful experience. It's a short 5 min walk towards downtown Solvang. We booked the Nordic Courtyard for 3 of us. The Marlo has a big courtyard area in the front of the hotel with a fire pit, plenty of seating arrangements both for communal use and infront of each individual door. It is designed like individual studios, rather than a hotel where you have neighbors in all corners. The entrance to the parking lot in the back is quite narrow but apparently opens back up again. However, I decided to make use of the plenty of street parking available right infront of the hotel. Keep in mind, the office hours work only until 6pm, after that there is a number you can call for assistance. I believe the girl working the front desk also doubles as a maid, because we walked up to the office on a Monday morning at 11am, and it was not open for readily assistance, and I had seen her coming out of the rooms with the cleaning cart, that's not how I would run a business, especially being that it's a weekday and normal morning hours. - Across from the office is a game room, with plenty of games (like Jenga, Connect Four, Dominoes, Tic Tac Toe), a shuffle board, coffee & water machine. But only open as long as the office is open as well, so nothing after 6pm. We only had 2 interactions with the staff, and they were just whatever. The girl working the front desk checking people in on a Sunday afternoon was clearly not trained to be a receptionist at a hotel where you need to be screaming hospitality and marketing the boots out of the amenities. There was a couple checking in right before us, she explained all of the amenities they offer and answered any questions they had, when it came to us she explained nothing and just handed over the key. I understand you may not want to repeat yourself, but it's your job, and you can't assume I was listening or understood what you had just explained a minute ago. I was spoon feeding her the questions I had and was coming off strong and honest, it seems she was intimidated and kind of expecting us to figure it out on our own. If i have to ask for a simple request of how does the wifi work, maybe find another job or a WFH, where you don't have to talk to people & tourists constantly. Interaction 2) When we went into our room, we noticed the soap dispensers were running low, so my mom found a "maid" at another door and asked for a refill on them, she was nice and brought it over promptly, and apologized for the lack of attention. Not sure if that was the same girl as the receptionist or not. Also from the first night, our TV was not working. It was stuck on the "guest check out" screen and I did some research and tried to restart the TV but it was not connecting to a server. And guess what? We had that problem after hours, when nobody is at the office, because they're acting like they run a retail store. When we finally did see someone the next day, they got it working for us, and its a ton of channels to choose from. You can also sign into your streaming apps. They do however need someone readily available to assist atleast until 10pm. - The cleanliness could be better, there's random cobwebs on things and small stains on the bedsheets, easy fixes if they care to improve on those. We were in the first room, and were pleased to find we have no surrounding walls, no neighbors, no noise. We have an area with an umbrella, and cornhole boards to enjoy right under our window. My mom loves fresh air, and was pleased to know that we could open our windows to let the air in, unlike a traditional hotel where you're unable to open a window. Everything was new & modern, big fridge & freezer, and the biggest plus was the in-room microwave. The bed is firm just how I like it, and the pillows held up my head, not sinking in like your typical hotel pillows, very comfortable. The bathroom is modern, clean, and we absolutely appreciate that the dispensers for the soap and lotion are generous, and not a flimsy soap bar with a travel size lotion. They are apparently under new management just a couple months ago, and are currently doing upgrades in and around the property. Despite a few misses currently, out of all of the 3 star hotels in Solvang that got a facelift and are marketing themselves as 4 star hotels, the Marlo is better than all of those. Atleast the pictures you see online are not catfishing and you get exactly what you pay for. I would definitely stay here again, if it means not staying in the "4 star" facelift hotels in downtown.

The…read moreentrance is from a narrow lane right next to the hotel name board, with parking(narrow than usual, so need to be a little careful) at the back. We went in the middle of the week, so this was very well priced. After we were checked in, the lady at the checkin desk was very helpful in guiding us with a map of the area and marking the locations we should check out. That came super handy. The staff reaches out to you via texts if they want to confirm if it is a good time to go in and clean, which was nice. We got The Freya Accessible King Retreat. The room was tiny, but the aesthetic of the room was nice. The TV was a smart TV, unlike some other places I have recently visited, so it provided a late-night entertainment option. We stayed for 2 nights, and it was a pleasant experience. The only downside is the lack of room service after office hours, which can be difficult if we need something like an extra towel after hours. There is a game room with a coffee station for you to relax right across the room. The front and the back yard are beautiful additions to your stay, with the backyard having a corn hole setup, other games, and a beautiful fireplace for you to enjoy your evenings after the town shuts down. Definitely recommend this place.
