The manager Mr PING does not want to share the Owner's information or allow them call you to share your feedback with them on the poor customer service. Apparently the OWNER is only available via WECHAT and NOT willing to talk to anyone, how are such businesses allowed to operate? If you like deep punchy flavors this place is for you! We were invited here to celebrate with friends and dishes after dishes came on to the table. We were so full by half way but each dish that came after after "being full" made us realize that we have more room as the next dish called out to us and we simply couldn't resist!! The food here are truly spectacular! The flavors are Mainland Chinese and most dishes here uses Shichuan pepper and oily spices, so expect moderate kicks. Great food! When you are surrounded by dozens of Chinese folks, it bodes well. I visited here with my Chinese family for lunch on New Year's Day, and my friend Kathy did the ordering for our group (11 people in total). We had a great spread of food that included Mongolian beef, country or home style or farmhouse (we can't recall which) beef, moo shoo pork, hot and sour soup, beef rolls, pig intestine, fish and squid and green beans and fried chicken.... I didn't have the pig, pork or fish, but everything else was delicious and those that did have the others--including the intestine--said it was delicious. I know we'll be back because this is the post-holiday (Black Friday and New Year's Day) lunch favorite. My Chinese "in-laws" like the place too; she says that this is the place she goes that reminds her of the food she gets in China. Mapo has been a longstanding Chinese restaurant in Naperville for many years, having gone through a number of management/ownership changes. Sadly, Mapo is not what it used to be. Most apparent difference is the highly misleading "spicy beef brisket noodle soup" on the menu, which consists of only one meager piece of beef and a bunch of pieces of beef fat in an otherwise flavorful and spicy broth. How very unfortunate, as this dish used to be very good in years past. The sliced pork/bean curd with leek dish barely had any leek on the plate, and was mostly just bean curd and pork. The three cup chicken had small pieces of bone in literally every piece of chicken, making it very difficult to enjoy the flavors and texture of the chicken as is. The only redeeming grace of the entire was the spicy cabbage dish offered by the staff at the very beginning of the meal, which is tangy, spicy, and consists if great crunchy texture. But FYI, if you want more, they claim they don't have any more. (In other words, you have to buy an extra order...). They're also pretty stingy with the spicy cabbage, as they don't give it to customers who order carry-out, only to customers who dine in. But once again, only one small plate per table, and if your party has more individuals, unfortunately that means less of the cabbage per person. I wish they could learn from other dining establishments on how to offer better, more generous service to their customers, but I highly doubt that will change any time soon. read more

Mapo has an impressive regional Chinese variety on its menu. I saw very authentic dishes like Brisket with Daikon, Smoked Tea Duck as well as the usual Chinese American fare. I went with Hunan Beef, and Taiwanese Three Cup Chicken for take-out lunch. The portions were large enough for 2-3 days of leftovers for two people. The garlic and mildly spicy chili pepper flavors in the Hunan Beef was excellent! I enjoyed every single piece that sat in that sauce including beef, peppers, baby corn and mushrooms. The Three Cup Chicken was similarly flavorful, and I've only tried this dish a couple times, but I thought this version was slightly dry. The sweet soy sauce basil combination reminds me a lot of Thai basil chicken. One thing to note is that it's usually made with bone-in chicken that's been chopped into bite-size pieces so fragments of bone can get into the food and becomes hard to eat - not safe for kids. I would be interested in dining in and trying other things next time! read more

The prices range from $7-12 and the portions are huge! Must-haves include their Dry Chili Chicken and Eggplant in Garlic Sauce! Each Lunch Special comes with a soup (Egg Drop or Hot & Sour), a Spring Roll, and a choice of Veggie Fried Rice or White Rice. The Service has been really good in the past few times I went there. There is better Chinese food in the suburbs than in the city, yes including Chinatown. Four of us ordered lamb with cumin, string beans, ma-la fish fillet, and mapo tofu. With all that, we had left overs! My favorite was the string beans and in second, the lamb. Not that the fish and tofu weren't great, but I'm just not a fan of fish and tofu overall. The string beans were seasoned well, in many places that I've ordered this dish they're easily too salty. The cumin on the lamb was potent, but made it delicious when paired with rice. The lamb was crispy on the outside, but not too hard to chew, then very tender on the inside. As for the fish and tofu, both very soft and easy to chew. The tofu was a tad too spicy for me, but still very enjoyable. Enjoyable to the point where if I came back here with friends, I'd recommend it to them! We had an older lady serving us. I first came to Mapo nearly ten years ago and it was solid. In my most recent visit, it's still great and is probably the best Chinese restaurant in the Chicago suburbs. The scallion pancake ($6) rocked it, with a wonderful level of crispiness and chew, creating the perfect mouthfeel. The chive with dry bean curd ($12) is savory and delicious. The mapo tofu can be made vegan ($11) and was simply okay. Honestly, for a restaurant called Mapo, I had higher expectations. That said, the rest of their menu is so good that it doesn't really matter. Lastly, the peapod leaves ($14) were cooked perfectly. The service here is really bad. They prioritize DoorDash orders and whenever I order pickup they don't even start making it until after I've arrived. I waited 40 minutes later than the promised time today for 3 dishes. I get home and an item is missing and one of the noodle dishes is missing all the ingredients?! No apology for the late order. It's been a continuous struggle to find anyone who serves good Szechuan, Hunan, or Taiwanese cuisine anywhere in the suburbs. That's why I was thrilled when I found Mapo conveniently located in Naperville by H-Mart (it's also a struggle to find large Asian grocery stores). I tried three dishes here and all three were done so well I can't wait to go back. Be aware though, the cooking style is authentic Chinese so the items may contain more fat or spice than what you are used to. Tea smoked duck - Crispy on the outside, tender meat on the inside with tons of smoke flavor. This is one of the best you'll find in the suburbs and unlike some other restaurants, this isn't covered in sauce so you can clearly taste the smoke flavor. Most of the fat is mostly removed by the cooking process so you are left with a strong meat and skin flavor. Dry chili chicken - If you loved the version from Yilin or Lao Sze Chuan, you're sure to love this one as well. The chicken is battered and fried to a crisp here with a strong flavor of ginger and garlic to complement the chili. This comes in a huge portion and is not overly spicy (don't be fooled, dry chili is more aromatic than spicy). Even if you aren't into authentic Chinese cuisine -- you have to try this dish. Once you do, you can never go back to eating popcorn chicken again. Mao's favorite pork belly - Delicious pieces of fatty pork belly in a tasty broth. This is a famous Hunan dish with tons of different ingredients that make up the delicious broth but the true magic is in the combination of all the ingredients over rice.It's hard to describe but I know you'll love it. As I poured over the menu, it seemed that a decision would be hard to make because there were so many options. Then I saw IT! They have dan dan noodles! Well, technically - Dong Dong noodles, here. But as a tip, I suggest you pronounce it dan dan. I went with dong-dong pronunciation and the waitress gave me a strange looked and repeated my order back to me saying dan-dan. Dong Dong/Dan Dan Noodles - $8. It's only natural for me to compare this dish to Katy Dumpling House. Mapo's is $1 more, this dish is bigger, the sauce is more creamy and peanutty, tons more meat and pickled veggies, and the noodles are more like flat spaghetti than fat udon. It was good, but definitely contains less crack than Katy's dan dan noodles. Country style smoked pork belly - $11 It was good, but I'm not that fond of pork belly, so I wasn't in love with it. It came with leeks, jalapeno and garlic. The service was amazingly quick. Complimentary hot tea was on the table before I even realized it. The food was prepared in no time. Just a few weeks ago, a few friend started to post their dishes at Mapo and raved about a few new dishes. I decided to start a few carryouts and absolutely hooked with "Ma La Xiang Guo" - a Spicy delicious pot. They continue serving some of old popular dishes like beef in scallion pancakes, braised tofu curd, dry chili chicken, spicy beef noodle soup etc. In addition, they started some Sichuan spicy dishes like Boiling spicy fish fillet, Iron wok Chicken, and "Ma La Xiang Guo". This Spicy delicious pot has all kinds of veggies and meat. It is very tasty and somewhat spicy with a perfect balanced flavor from Chili pepper and peppecor. And it is quite flexible to cook as well. I dont' like the crabmeat then they could remove that. They basically could adjust it in all diffirent ways with or without anything you want to put in this spicy mix. I like going to Mapo because they have such an expansive menu. That being said, many of the menu items are spicy. I came here with a group of 8 and some of those dining with me could only eat select dishes that we ordered (we decided on family style) because they were intolerant to spicy foods. Three delicacies: this was probably gobbled down the fastest because it was a dish everyone could enjoy--it included shrimp, chicken, scallop, squid, beef and Chinese vegetables. Mapo tofu: although the restaurant is known for this dish, I was impartial to it and I probably wouldn't order it again. Fish fillet and mushroom in sour pickle sauce: most of us enjoyed this dish. It does come out almost soup-like. Yu shan eggplant: most of us either liked it or hated it--there was no in between. Those that hated it thought it was bland, but I thought that the eggplant was flavorful and was cooked just right. I love the name Mapo so based on that and Sherwin C.'s review, I knew I had to come. The first thing I noticed was that even for lunch on a Friday, they were pretty busy with a mix of both Asians and non-Asians. Good sign. And even though they were busy, my waitress was attentive (sometimes rare at more authentic Chinese restaurants) and honest when she told me the pork chop rice wasn't anything special. So I ordered their Taiwanese Lunch box! Yum! The lunch plate comes with a boiled soy sauce egg, pork on rice, braised pork and tofu and some sour vegetables. I wish more restaurants had Taiwanese food. Sometimes I'll see bits of pieces of Taiwanese food spread across Chicagoland but there just aren't enough places that have things like the "lunch box". It's not even anything hard to make, but just combining the food items together like this reminded me of my childhood. It would be like a restaurant that only sold jelly sandwiches and then going to another restaurant that only sold peanut butter sandwiches. Combine some of that delicious ish up so I can feel the Taiwanese love! The pork was average as far as flavor and tenderness, but I loved their pickled cabbage and their pork on rice. For $8, I was extremely satisfy with my lunch and do plan on coming back. My to go order: You know I had to try their mapo tofu with pork and their mei cai kou rou (pork belly with preserved mustard greens). The portion is large and the flavor was decent but I didn't think the mapo tofu was spicy at all and it didn't have very much pork in it. I would try their soft fried tofu next time. Their pork belly was incredible though. Super fatty and rich with a lot of preserved veggies on bottom. #love read more

I am shocked by the rather low average review -- I've been coming here since they've opened and they never disappoint. I suspect part of the discrepancy between the polarized reviews have to do with what dishes are ordered and expectations -- the massive menu can be intimidating, especially if you're not familiar with the cuisine. I've posted a few photos of my favorites, which range from super hot to very mild (but still flavorful!) I'd also add that there are plenty of delicious vegetarian options, something that's not often said about most Chinese restaurants. A few highlights include: salt and pepper tofu (812) and yu shan eggplant (824). I'm not a huge fan of tofu or eggplant, and I'm still addicted to both. The tofu they use is silkier and smoother than butter, and beneath the thin crunchy exterior, the inside melts in your mouth. Yu shan eggplant has a nice kick to it, and the combination of glaze and texture really makes the dish. Not convinced by my recommendation? Go try Mapo yourself -- that is, if you can manage to get a table amidst all the regulars! read more
