Ok, so I've never had the savory/meat rolls here, so I can't review those at all, but all the pastries my family and I have had here were terrific. So I thoroughly recommend the sweet dessert offerings this place offers. There's always been a decent selection of cookies and dessert bars and pastries when we've visited, and they all look enticing. Last time we visited, we each had different types of cookies: they were all large, fresh and delicious. My kid loves the Nanaimo bars. And the prices are really reasonable, too. I always think I should get a loaf of bread here, as there's always a good selection of loaves, and they're like half the price (or less!) of comparable-looking loaves in all other stores I've been to. But I never have, as I've always had a newly-bought loaf at home. One day....!!! Counter staff here has always been friendly to us. This place is not big or cutesy or fancy, but it's always been clean and, hey, it sells desserts. We love that! read more

I love the donuts here. Whether it is the glazed, jelly filled or sugar donuts this place makes really good old fashioned donuts. Every time I pass by they stick the donuts right on the front window so it is hard to miss and they just tempt you to walk into the bakery. The other thing I tend to buy here is the sausage rolls. They make a very filling breakfast in the morning. I haven't tried much else here, but those two items are enough to get me to keep coming back over and over again to this bakery. Oh and I will mention that this bakery does have that old time feel. It seems as if the decor has not changed since the 70's or 80's. It is kinda like walking into a time warp. Bread loaves, cookies, egg rolls oh my! This place has it all and quite good may I add. We visited this lovely little bakery maybe too many times in our 3 day stay in Vancouver. The place never disappointed, just don't expect a tart lemon bar if you get the lemon bar....it was too sweet for me. We probably bought all the egg rolls they made, the boy was a fan of their chicken pie. We warmed them up in the oven at our place. The girl was happy with her random cookie purchase as well. Every time we went the staff was patient and helpful, answering the boy's questions of what tastes better. My kids are totally like me, I love it! I will definitely be back if I'm in the lovely city of Vancouver. This little bakery made an impact not only on my pant size but also on my heart! read more

We stopped by after dinner on a weekday evening to get something for dessert for each of us. The server really wanted to rush us through our order. They had a huge selection and it all looked really good. Badgering with "Are you ready?" every minute until one person has made a selection and then asking "is that all?" after every item when it's clear members of the family are still looking is pretty rude and not customer friendly. The apple fritter was really quantity over quality. It would benefit from being fresh. The double chocolate cookie was okay. Again, it would benefit from being fresh. The eclair was actually not good. Fresh might have helped, but the cream was crumbly. It wasn't even frozen and so crumbly, it was just old. The pastry part was dry and the chocolate wasn't very good. Overall, wasn't even worth eating. The cream horn, on the other hand, shone. Two people tried it and said it was excellent. read more

Great, old school, family-run bakery. I used to go to a bakery just like this as a little kid with my dad, 30 odd years ago, and Maple Leaf is very similar. The counters and cases must be from the 60s or earlier, and they even have eccles cakes like I remember from 1985. Truly refreshing in the sea of self-consciously pretentious overpriced joints that is so much of Vancouver. Good bread for a very good price. All the little pastries and pie slices I've had have been tasty. Friendly service. They were supposed to close a year or so ago, but apparently decided not to - for that I am thankful. This place is like my crack. It's nothing overly fancy but so damn good and reminds me of home. I love the pastries, bread, cream puffs, danishes and anything else I shouldn't eat. The staff are friendly, helpful, and aren't terribly chatty. Don't expect anything organic or frills of any kind, just simple white flour goodness. read more

Without going into gruesome details, I actually thought I might have lupus or pancreatic cancer a couple weeks ago when I had a few of their vegetable/beef sausage rolls. Thankfully a few days removed from that unholy filth and my system seems to have cleared up. This is a hit or miss, depending on what you get. My samosa was a huge miss but the apple tart was delicious. Apple tart -- deliciously moist -- the only case where moist is a positive description. Samosa -- no bueno. not crispy, skin was supah thick, and the lady just microwaved it to reheat. random story: a huge dragonfly flew into the pastry area and got the attention of bypassers to stop at look at this bakery. The lady then proceeded to use her tongs (which she uses to grab the pastries..) to try and catch the dragonfly LOL. she didn't succeed, but it was funny. also unsanitary. read more

If you have a craving for something sweet and a few dollars in your pocket this is the place to go! I can't beleive I spend 2 years just walking past this bakery like it didn't even exist! It wasn't until I had a craving for a chocolate criossant and the ones at Cob's looked nasty that I discovered this jem and I am glad I did. Everything here is really goooood and it's almost all under $3.00. I am addicted to their triple chocolate brownies. I think I even dreamt about these brownies once! read more

quality fast food style bakery, (ie, not fancy, gourmet style).. I've been here several times after discovering the nearby Cob's had an unfriendly staff (witnessed another customer's conversation with the staff and I decided to this bakery instead). Their prices are definitely reasonable, below the big chain store pieces, and the quantity is very large, though not exactly the same level as Breka... My fav here is their huge/heavy/unusual poppy seed pastry, DH and I have never had one like this before and appreciated the uniqueness of this ingredient combination. Other things such danishes and muffins, danishes were way too sweet for my taste buds and I would probably skip in the future. The Date square is pretty good though. I imagine this is more of a bread shop than pastry shop. read more

We stopped in to get a snack before dinner since our tummies were a rumblin. We grabbed a couple samosas and the BF had a gigantic apple turnover (which I didn't even get a bite of cuz he inhaled the damn thing - so I can't really tell you how it was.) The veggie samosas are just over $2 and they are nice and soft on the inside and not too overly breaded on the outside - which was awesome. I took my samosa home and heated it up, and it was filled with yummy veggies and tasted sooooo good. My only gripe is that there was no chutney with it, so it seemed kind of dry, and since it was my first visit to the bakery I am not sure if they just forgot to put some in our bag or if it actually doesn't come with chutney at all. Guess I will have to venture back and find out another time. read more

I love this place! I can't believe I haven't reviewed it before. I pretty much always pop in here when I'm down on Davie St. My favorite thing to get is the 6 pack of linser cookies, they go great with a hot cup of PG tips tea. I'm also on a sort of mission to try all of their sweet treats... It's an ambitious goal, but I'm dedicated. I really like the little triangle cakes. The almond triangles are good if you're in the mood for something more decadent. Honestly, I've never had something there that I didn't like. Their bread is also very good. And everything is sooo cheap. It's the best. read more

Amazing. I have been going to this bakery for five years since I moved to Vancouver. They are reasonably priced, well located, and everything I have ever had from there has been delicious. I especially like the dark rye, apple squares and danishes. Damn, this review is making me hungry... Don't go there too often or you'll get fat! Nice contrast from many locations in Vancouver that focus way too much on style over substance. Nothing flashy here except excellent food. read more

This bakery has been here since I was in high school and the same lady still works behind the counter. Well she is the owner, but still! She looks not a day older than the last time I saw her. It's not very fancy inside and the decor is older looking, no fancy displays or creative pastries here, just good old staples: bread of all kinds, Chinese pastries, croissants and buns, some European inspired baked goods and cakes. The bakery is in the back and they do have a fresh selection everyday. The bets part? It's open on most holidays and is really inexpensive. read more

My picks would be the apple squares, danishes, hermit cookies and something called a Copenhagen, not sure if that's a common baked good, but it was new to me. Worst rice crispy treat ever! They told me they make it just like on the box, but no one would ever again combine marshmallow and crispies if that was the result. I bought my rice crispy treat and walked out the door before I looked at it and realized I didn't see marshmallow. I went back in and asked if they used marshmallow and they insisted yes, so I went in my way. After one bite it was clear there were no marshmallows, but corn syrup or some other binding syrup. A very good friend of mine wrote about their donuts on his fb..... here it is: The secret to enjoying a Chocolate Donut from Maple Leaf Bakery on Davie Street. "Buy it early in the day - cause they are always sold out, sometimes really early! Don't eat it right away (if you have the will power) smell it, look at it and even take a picture of it. Put it on top of your fridge for safe keeping, leaving the brown paper bag open a bit. Don't let the wife at the bakery give you a little white bag, it totally sticks to the icing and you lose all that beauty when trying to remove it. The father and son (because they are men) will automatically put it in a brown bag, with the icing side up - and handle it with care --- they understand! She is a doll, but she is all about cost of goods. So -- once it is stored away for safe keeping, with the bag slightly open --- this is the secret !! Let it sit in that bag until evening, when you can't stop thinking about it. Then, when it is time to indulge, remove it gently from the bag and now you will get hit with the smell! I try to take small slow bites -- but the first bite, AMAZING. After sitting with the bag slightly open for hours the outside of the donut has become slightly crunchy, not stale. Now, just savour every bite and try not to touch yourself . . . It really is that good! Any questions? Mine is now sitting on top of the fridge - and I will enjoy the ritual this evening.
