After a full day of visiting the zoo and the Denver Art Museum, we were hungry for dinner. Manta Cafe showed up in my Yelp search and was an easy walk from the museum. Mantra Cafe refers to having "Nepali Indian Fusion Food" and their menu reflects Himalayan items and classic Indian fare. It was a Tuesday evening and there were a handful of customers dining already - mostly couples I noticed. For our party of three, this is what we ordered: * Pani-Puri $8 * Garlic Cilantro Naan $5 * Rogani Lamb $22 * Village Curry Goat $22 * Basmati Rice (complimentary) Everything was very enjoyable with great flavors and we finished it all. We came in during a rush--granted with 7 people. We were the second group seated during the rush. We were not provided menus even though the other parties were. We patiently waited while other tables that came after us ordered. Others had gotten their food already. We followed up, but they essentially blew us off. We waited over an hour for the food to come out. The food overall was good, but instead of getting the saag dish with lamb, we were given the saag paneer. I asked to pay, and they said got that fixed on the bill. They said they included a 5% discount for the wait, but they didn't say that a 20% tip would already be added. Despite having such POOR service, we still tipped $20.00, not knowing tip had already been included. I went to let them know that they could've have said something about the tip being added. They said it wasn't their intention. And I could've reviewed the receipt but they just put the machine to me and asked me to tap without giving the option to review the bill. Thing is, this is a state govt funded work function, and by state policy, we are not allowed to tip over 20% on meals. Either way, food was good, but service was POOR POOR POOR. Again I understand the circumstances, but you could communicate better and not be so dismissive. read more

My first encounter with this restaurant was 7-8 months ago as a quick takeout. As I was quite impressed with the quality of the food I had back then I had been looking forward to experiencing it again. This time I go to dine in. Since my adult daughter and I were going to be there for a little celebration I made the reservation through the restaurant's website requesting to be seated at a 4-person table. Unfortunately upon arrival the restaurant not only did not even check to see if they had us on the reservation list they also didn't allow us to sit at a 4-person table. The restaurant wasn't busy at all on a Monday night so they simply treated us like a "walk-in" guest. Mmm...what's the purpose of the reservation link on their website if they don't value it?? They took us to one of the smaller two-person tables. After sitting there for 5 minutes or so perusing the menu, we kindly asked one of the workers if we could move to the bar seating that overlooks the busy Broadway. This was the game changer. The elevated seats and the tabletop made the ambience feel more like a special occasion. Thank goodness...this was the only bummer part of our dinner. The rest, fortunately, went quite well! Food: It looks like another Indian/Nepali restaurant at first but in my personal experience, this one ranks the best or top tier for their authenticity. Tho two main dishes were cooked in a medium heat and yet they were extremely doable even for someone like me who is not much of a "heat" person. My daughter is not a big fan of naan bread so as she is way more versed in the very cuisine (she had just come back from India spending a month to be trained to be a yoga instructor with a certification) she suggested we get the thin wheat bread. This bread went efficiently well with our two mains. Both iced teas were a great accompaniment to our whole meal. And again, how authentic everything tasted and how meticulously everything was cooked and prepared, it was something we couldn't ask for better quality. A bit of a disappointment with the whole reservation situation and yet the quality of the food broke even at the end. I'm not sure if I was just hungry after walking around the Colorado History Museum until closing, but this restaurant was conveniently located a few feet away, and I loved the food so much! I got a chicken tikka masala and a mango lassi. I sat at the bar since I had gone there solo. The chicken tikka masala was so creamy and it was so delicious. It's been so long since I've been in love. I thought perhaps by cynicism has killed my heart and palate. However... my new Mantra is... Mantra cafe. The food makes my palate want to break out in song. They presented very tantalizing flavors and well executed cooking. Service was excellent also. I will be back soon. We stayed at The Art Hotel across the street from Mantra and ordered it after a Dodgers game for pick up. The food was EXTREMELY DELICIOUS AND FRESH!!! I like the decor, the restaurant is inviting and feels comfortable. We ate dinner on a Saturday night and there were a lot of people but we were still seated right away since they had ample seating. Our waitress was very good, friendly and observant catering to us. Good options on the menu and they give very big portions so we were both full and had take home for another meal. My biryani was very good and my friends veggie stew was also very tasty, the broth was thicker so you could really taste every mouthful. We also got samosas for appetizers which was well made. We ordered strawberry daiquiris and they were well presented but tasted watered down so that was probably our least favorite part of the meal. Great option when I'm craving comfort food. I know they say tikka masala isn't "authentic" Indian, but regardless, it's delicious - and theirs is superb. The flavor is rich, the chicken is cooked perfectly with no weird bites, and the pieces are cut to size so every bite is enjoyable. The garlic cilantro naan is probably the fluffiest naan I've ever had and delicious. I usually order spicy and went with hot this time, but honestly wish I'd gone for the highest level. I have mixed reviews after my visit to Mantra Cafe tonight. First off, the chicken masala flavoring was excellent! It was just the right level of spice and depth of flavor. That dish alone was the highlight. Now to the drawbacks. My cheesy naan had two issues: it was slightly burnt, which affected the taste, and the amount of cheese was minimal to non-existent. The portion size was also disappointing for the price. For $18, I received about 10 medium size chunks of chicken, which felt light, especially coming from Houston where portions tend to be more generous. Walked into a clean very well decorated establishment. We didn't realize they had dedicated parking out front. Bonus. Seemed to be family owned and operated and everyone was so kind. The food came out in family style serving dishes which I thought was wonderful. You could also pick your spice level. We got the gluten free naan and the menu was very gluten and dairy friendly. They have the icons so you know for sure. The gluten free naan was probably a rice flour based naan. It was delicious. The rice was good. I had the coconut curry and no complaints. I was in Capitol Hill and was craving some Indian food and randomly stumbled upon this gem during their grand opening!!! There's plenty of great seating inside, but also outdoor seating if you want to enjoy the weather. I ordered the Lamb Vindaloo while my friend ordered the Chicken Naan Tikka Taco, and we split an order of Garlic Naan. Everything was DELICIOUS! My server was so helpful and an angel. Went to Mantra Cafe for a late lunch after hearing a coworker mention the naan tika tacos. I usually stick to the same few places, but this ended up being a nice change from the usual downtown spots. The tacos came out fresh and had a good mix of flavor without being too spicy. Service was easygoing and the cashier answered a couple questions about the menu without making me feel rushed. My food took around ten minutes, which seemed reasonable since they were getting a steady lunch crowd. The place has a casual atmosphere where people actually sit and relax for a while instead of eating and leaving right away. read more

We also had the chicken kadai and the mustang aloo which I would definitely order again. The rice was fluffy and flavorful and everything we ordered was presented with care. I'm visiting from the bay area where I eat a decent amount of Indian food. Mantra Cafe is across the street from where I'm staying so I ran over there when I got in late. I was blown away at how nice the place is and the food was some of the best I've ever had. The service was so friendly and attentive. Lamb coconut curry was cooked perfectly, the naan was warm and just right. Dessert made my knees wobble. They made a mocktail that was super delicious. Pictures of all of it below. We ordered take out and enjoyed our meals. Coconut curry chicken and vindaloo curry with chicken. Accompanied by rice and plain Nan. I'm not a foodie or expert on Indian food however, it was tasty and delicious like food we have gotten from other restaurants like this. The portions were on par also. I will give it 5 stars because to us it was overall excellent. Anxiously awaiting others opinions as like I said, we are not foodies.
