We have been coming here for years and have never had a bad meal! The place is small so getting there early is a good idea on the weekends also parking can be a nightmare in Ridgewood so definitely take that into your estimated arrival time! The service is good they don't talk much but they always get your food out correctly. We love the Alloo Gobi and the Korma and the califlower app is great. They do give you a good amount of food and one we share our order and still have leftovers! Also try the dosa! One thing that I was a little shocked about was that they stopped serving the crackers with the dipping sauces. Every other Indian restaurant gives you something like that as soon as you sit down and they used to do that here, but I don't know what happened. They really should bring it back. read more

The food here is just plain great - the depth of flavor makes a noticeable difference. These sauces have clearly been simmering for hours on a base of fresh spices. If I had to say anything, it would be that my "very spicy" food wasn't noticeably spicier than my son's mild. The restaurant is not always crowded, but there was a steady stream of people wisely picking up takeout orders, even early on a Friday. Something changed. We liked the flavors, spices and the food has been historically fantastic. Today it really fell flat. Korma was not creamy as if there was no cream or coconut milk added. Madras was runny and lacked flavor. Paneer and tikka were more sugary and any other identifiable taste. Hopefully this is a one off because we love this place. read more

Small note: I highly don't recommend this place for Quarantine dining. Too many people allowed inside and it took forever. If I had just been here then, I'd probably be leaving a 1 instead. Old un-posted review: I've been to their Fair Lawn location once and the food there was fine not amazing; but better than average and perfectly fine for Fair Lawn which lacked any Indian restaurant. The food here was fine outside of the papadum as per the other place. We ordered a few dishes here. I got a soup and a dosa and the others shared an appetizer and got main dishes. The menu is slightly confusing to these not as used to Indian food. As the curry section lists veggie/paneer/meat/seafood, some people could assume that you could order some of the veggie dishes with meat (which of course is not the case.) Also, as mentioned by others, the music here is a bit odd. It was modern classical which would work better in a (much) fancier place than this. The tableware also reminds me more of what you'd get in a fancier place also. Outside of this, the service was fantastic, properly explaining things and being nonintrusive. Dishes ordered Manmada Rasam Soup. Good Chick Pea Chaat: Papdi with chickpeas, potatoes, yogurt, and mint. The usual Mysore Masala Dosa: Nicely spiced dosa though the sides were a bit watery Fisherman curry: Good Chicken Tikka: Nicely spicy Other things: Rosemary naan: We ordered different flavor than most other places (as they don't have a Kashmiri naan on the menu.) This restaurant has a very special offering. They have Lamb Keema Dosa. Just to find a restaurant that serves Dosa can be tricky, maybe only 1/3 of Indian restaurants offer masala dosa and various other forms of dosa. If you add the option of a dosa filled with some form of keema, you've really found something unusual. I would describe it as an Indian burrito filled with spicy ground lamb inside a crêpe. The Sambal that they serve with it is not too spicy or sour, which is a plus for me. I find myself typically unable to finish the sambal at most restaurants because it's a little over-the-top for me. This restaurant's Sambal is just right. Round out that Dosa with a serving of fresh made onion pakora, and you got quite the combo. The other items that I've tried here are delicious as well. They KNOW what they are doing! Interestingly enough, they have a sister Restaurant in Fairlawn with different offerings. The Fairlawn restaurant does not have the Keema dosa. This restaurant does not offer goat in any form but the Fairlawn restaurant does. Go figure read more

A recent dinner for two at Manjal was very disappointing. The only thing that was up to standard for a good Indian restaurant were the samosas and those are probably purchased frozen. My chana masala was mediocre at best and did not sit well afterwards. My wife's saag was worse - it had almost no taste other than spinach. The naan was mediocre also. We have been dining in Indian restaurants on a regular basis for at least 25 years. This was the poorest meal we've ever had in one. When Manjal first opened, it was a very good restaurant. Now, there are much better options available. BTW, the interior photos with table clothes on the tables must be out of date. There were no table clothes to be seen on our visit. Also not seen during our Sunday night visit - any other diners. Take a hint everyone. read more

Stopped by Manjal with some friends for a quick lunch on Saturday. Surprisingly, they were not serving a buffet for lunch. It's a pretty small restaurant, a bit further from the main area of Ridgewood. We were seated quickly, and the waiter took our drink order. The menu is pretty much the same as any other Indian restaurant. But it is a lot more expensive averaging about $20 per entree. We went ahead and ordered the Goan Shrimp, Chicken Tikka Masala, and Chicken Biryani. The waiter asked what kind of naan we would like, but failed to mention it did not come with our meal like at most other Indian restaurants. The food was good, but spending more than $60 on lunch for 3 is a bit much. read more

Judging by how we consumed and devoured the food!!!! Yes, it is great. We had psalm paneer, lamb tandoori, buttered chicken, samosa, and gulag jaman. The lamb was so tender and the sauce was superb. Not spicy hot but very very good. And don't forget the butter and garlic nan. Everything was soooooo good taste like heart warming home-cooked food. Place is nice and clean, bright and open. Can be a place to bring a date and enjoy the company and the food. The music is romantic and just the right volume where you can still talk to one another. Parking though is not free. I had an enjoyable dinner here! Yes it's a little bit on the pricy side but I found the portions here to be much bigger than most places. We had the Gobi Manchurian (chili garlic cauliflower) which I thought was delicious but could have been a tad more flavorful. We then had the Lamb Vindaloo and Chicken Tikka Masala and both were superb. The staff was very friendly and attentive as well. Very enjoyable. Smaller in size comparable to other Ridgewood restaurants, nice decor and of course byo as one would expect for this area. I like that it isn't set in the heart of downtown just off to the side. For those of you who know Ridgewood you know what I mean. That also allows one to find parking close to the restaurant. Staff were extremely attentive and helpful in guiding me through their menu when we first arrived. Then they sort of disappeared for a bit. I found portions enormous unlike other reviewers have commented. Lots of vegetarian dishes which I always appreciate although I had lamb which was delish. Leftovers the next day were just as good. The heat level was wowza. I really enjoyed their naan which had a nice rosemary seasoning. The Rasamalai for dessert is the bomb. Clearly this food was not prepared well and after seeing the naan we were wondering if the food too was old food sitting there. Absolutely delicious! My new favorite local lunch spot!!! I tried a little bit of everything during their lunch buffet and was delighted. For $10.99 all you can eat, everything exceeded my expectations. Juicy chicken of all kinds, my favorite being the chicken biriyani. I also learned that everything is gluten free so that is a major plus! Try the Chickpea flour fried cabbage. It's outstanding! My search for an Indian restaurant in Ridgewood led me to Manjal, a tiny place on Godwin Ave, not too far from the train station. Passing through town some time ago, I spotted the bright red sign, but never had the chance to stop in until that night. At first, I was a tad concerned I'd been led astray, as it was nearly empty when I arrived at 6:30. As the evening progressed, however, the tables became occupied and the place sprang to life. To start, my group shared the vegetable samosas, in addition to the onion pakoras. The samosas were hot, crispy, and stuffed with a fair amount of potatoes, peas, and carrots. Like the samosas, the onion pakoras were crispy, but it seemed as if they were 95% chickpea batter and 5% onion. I also expected them to resemble fritters; instead, they looked like a pile of thin, individually fried onion strips coated in batter. For my main course, I chose the vegetable tikka masala, which was served in a white, boat-shaped dish. Since most of us ordered curry, a larger portion of basmati rice was brought to the table. My tomato-based curry was bright orange with a creamy consistency. I was a little disappointed with the vegetables, though - the majority were potatoes and carrots, with only two small cauliflower pieces. The sauce itself was notably rich and robust in flavor, so had the vegetable contents been more diverse, my opinion would be more favorable. Manjal offers several other vegetarian items on the menu, so it's possible I just didn't order the right thing. I don't usually write reviews but this place definitely deserves a shout out. I have ordered from here many times and every time it does not disappoint. I have also ordered from many other Indian restaurants in the area and this place HANDS DOWN is the best. Sometimes I find with other places the food to be bland but I cannot say the same for Manjal. Tonight I called to see if I could get a takeout order, they were just about to close and they kindly took my order and honestly made me the best Chicken Tikka I ever tasted. This dish was cooked with pure love, I typically get my dishes VERY spicy and I asked if they could make is so spicy that my eyes water. When I went to pickup my food both men were incredibly kind and even asked if I wanted to try the sauce to make sure it wasn't too hot, taking the time to provide exceptional customer service considering they were about to close the restaurant. All I have to say is they made this dish to perfection and the spice level is ON POINT! Not to mention I ordered garlic naan that was hot and crispy ! So delicious I had to stop eating to post this because I felt very grateful for my experience and for the delicious food that lay in front of me.
