why the hell are coffee places so goddamn serious? everyones hunched over their tables, eyes glued to the macs, heads in books and silent. maybe this occurs to me here because theres nothing manic about it. or the coffee. but hey whats in a name? doesnt mean it wasnt good. it was. my cappuccino was actually quite thick and creamy. i had walked to spadina from ossington and it would have been nice to sit down, but there was to be none of that because it was very quietly PACKED. well im on my way home anyway so thats fine by me. they clearly have a sense of humour here or perhaps amongst their clan of baristas, because theres a montage of goofy images pasted on the wall behind he counter. they have the clover machines or setup so thats great for people that want their coffee made from the most freshly ground beans. a shelf of about five magazines greet you at the door to help keep things serious and its quite spacious, so the next time im around bathurst and college, ill give another go at a seat. perhaps i had overly high expectations for manic, but i left the cafe feeling disappointed. i was really excited to find some intelligentsia in toronto after just having moved from chicago (the most local home of these beans). plus i had heard many many rave reviews. 2 over-pulled, bitter doubles made by 2 different baristas, a grungy-towards-dirty atmosphere, and some bored-yet-not-interested staff later, and i'm wary. i'd try it again though, just for the beans and their beautiful machine. maybe short and take-out? read more

All I've got to say is best coffee in town. Every time I do my Kensington/China Town trip I walk the extra 10 minutes to sit down(if I can get a seat) and have a latte here. The espresso is so rich, not bitter, the foam and milk temperature is perfect... Manic Coffee just goes to show that Starbucks hasn't ruined the cafe business. If anything it has made it better because now the independents have to make sure theirs that much better to compete. Manic coffee could kick Starbuck's ass in a coffee-off anyday. read more

Manic stands out from the other great coffee shops I've tried in that the espresso tastes different from a majority of them and yet I would rate them just as high. They are uniquely good. I had a very pleasant experience with the baristas who were very accommodating and welcoming. This place is easily in the top 5 best coffee/espresso shops in Toronto. I love this place! :) Excellent coffee and amazing gelato. I was informed that their gelato are made with fresh (as opposed to powder in some places) and natural ingredients (e.g. vanilla beans rather than artificial extract) in-house and you can definitely taste the rich flavours. All the flavours are so good and it's too bad I only have room in my stomach for 2 flavours today. I end up choosing black sesame and espresso. With the container on the table in front of me, I knew the gelato was going to taste great because I could already smell the aroma from both the black sesame and the espresso. Black sesame was rich tasting but the espresso was just out of this world amazing for me. Of course this has to be one of their top winners considered the quality coffee they're known for. Manic is definitely my favourite spot for gelato whenever I'm in the area downtown. I hope one day they will branch out and bring some of that good stuff closer to my home in the Scarborough/Markham area. I also learned that they are always working on new flavours so I can't wait to go back and try what they'll come up with next. read more

Had a latte here and it's more of a flat white than a latte to be honest. Kind of heavy on the espresso, or maybe I'm so used to lattes being coffee-flavoured hot milk. Who knows. The barista was friendly and gave me a little loyalty card but I haven't been back so it just sits in my wallet like an unused souvenir mug. Atmosphere is like most coffee shops - wooden tables with lots of natural light spilling through the windows. read more

When manic first opened it was all the rage on College St. They had a fancy clover machine and the staff was a delight. Lately though, I find that the success has gone to their heads. I find it to be a "stuffy" establishment, and I really don't enjoy it anymore. read more

Awesome coffee, even better service and great bustling ambience. I usually have their drip or americano and don't leave dissapointed. I think after 6pm, they stop doing drip so you get an Americano at drip prices. It's great. read more

The ambiance is refreshing, there's always new artwork on the walls. the espresso based drinks are one of the best in town, and also like the snacks they sell. they even serve salads and wraps that look healthy if you want to change from the butter-based goodies. This cafe still makes fabulous coffee, strong espresso-good balancing between espresso and milk but the portions are small-not enough bang for your buck. Also there isn't enough seating. Try to get the seat by the window. Excellent coffee but the College Street Lit Espresso Bar is much better in terms of atmosphere and treat selection. read more

My colleague recommended this place to me and I'm not sure if I misheard him or not, but I've been wandering around my new neighborhood asked people were "maniac" is for the last two weeks. Talk about lousy first impressions. Speaking of lousy first impressions, this caffe did not make one on me. In fact I fell in love with the vibe. Great spot for coffee/tea. Had their iced toddy which was awesome (note: does not contain liquor). Also their cookies are fantastic. Staff was friendly & personable. I spent about an hour and a half there with 3 friends chatting and one of the baristas gave us two muffins free of charge, which was really nice. Downsides: closes early & no free WIFI. read more

Hands down best butter croissants in the entire city. Truth be told, the best I've ever eaten period. They also press a mean espresso. Great beans and machines. My favourite Americano in the city as well. However, I was there this week and got a very watered down version of what I'm used to there. Once you get past the fact they think their shit don't stink, it's a good local coffee shop with in-house croissants (win) and a good drip coffee and Americano. Lattes are decent but nothing to write home about, but it easily takes any other coffee shop available out with extreme prejudice. PYAH! read more

I'm a LATTE person and frankly I was a little disappointed with the drink. Excellent panini but no choice of bread. Though the atmosphere is very warm, staff is nice, very comfortable and young crowd. No wifi, too bad - but I'll definitely come back here to try out more options and enjoy the atmosphere. read more

Small little coffee shop that serves coffee and gelato. I've only had a latte and a scone, the latte was delicious but they served it to me in a to go paper cup and I would've preferred a mug since I was drinking it there and the scone was average. Very clean inside, white walls, wooden benches, but nothing different than a hundred other small coffee shops. read more

One of my favorite coffee shops in Toronto. They serve a fantastic flat white - perfectly steamed milk to a velvet consistency, and a strong espresso flavor, not overpowering. Apparently hard to come by a perfect cup, but Manic gets it right. They also serve really tasty gelato. The flavours are rotated every couple days, so there's something new to try each time I visit. I recommend the espresso flavour, (ofcourse) black sesame, and red bean. Love this place to bits, just wish they had wifi and AC in the summer! read more

As usual I only ever review the coffee as my family are in the business and I am getting into it. Most of my reviews are based upon americanos and Flat Whites (of which very few are able to execute even remotely correct). I have been here a couple of times and I have only tried an Americano. I love the fact they use Social Coffee & Tea Co (in Richmond Hill) beans, as these beans are superb and previous winners of the North American Roasting Comps. To the point - the beans are superb and the execution of Americanos are superb. For anyone in the business we know its not as simple as tamping with all your might and pressing a button - the extraction has to be spot on. It is everytime. This coffee shop gets a lot of hype, and I find myself hanging out here when I am waiting for friends when we have dinner plans in the area. In fact, several days ago I had to kill 45 minutes before dinner so I made my way to Manic Coffee for a small cup. Since I knew that I would be eating a large dinner, I ordered a small coffee and was disappointed when it came in a "to-go" cup----I keep forgetting that they don't ask what kind of cup you want. I guess sometimes it's nice to have a mug---it feels more homey. Anywho, the coffee was fine and the vibe was calm. There was nothing bad or great about the experience. However, while I waited I noticed many people ordering their gelato, so after dinner I returned and had their pistachio gelato. It was surprisingly delicious. **When I visited Sicily I used to eat pistachio gelato every day and for years since I have been searching for a pistachio gelato that came close---and this one did. And for under $4 for a generous scoop, I would definitely come back for more. read more

I used to go by sometimes when they opened, but a few years later and now I find the staff unwelcoming, the coffee OK but not great. Somehow the students in the area didn't get that they deliberately avoid WiFi to discourage people from setting up shop and working for hours, which makes the vibe a bit more Second Cup than a good third wave espresso bar deserves. I'm sure there's a chicken and egg debate to be had here, but I'm not going to stick around long enough to have it - if it weren't on my way a couple days a week I probably would never visit. read more

Tried this place out for the first time today with a friend of mine, both planning to catch up and tackle away at work. The customer mix was of people chatting over their bevvie or workers typing away, We both liked the atmosphere and vibe the shop exuded and liked their smooth Americano and Chai Latte even more. Service here is understated-they're not overly chipper or anything but very attentive and kind. There was a little spill mishap (that did not involve the staff at all) yet the barista brought over a coupon for a free coffee anyway. Very nice touch! Had us changing our conversation from the spilled coffee to the kind gesture. In terms of the actual product, the coffee quality is high, good variety of snacks for sale (baked goods and sandwiches) and I understand they have gelato as well but it wasn't available when we arrived (assuming because it was later in the day or it's only offered seasonally). Also, Americanos and espressos are reduced to $2.25 after 5pm. Two thumbs up in my books! Something to note however, this place does not have wi-fi. Manic is currently my favourite coffee spot in the city, partially because it's oh so conveniently located around the corner from my house, but more so because it ticks all the boxes that a good coffee spot should. Bright, sunny, and well-laid out with the kind of decor that makes you want to stay a while, super friendly baristas, tasty baked goods (try the breakfast cookie!) and a dynamite latte. Considered deducting a star because there's no wifi available, but this can actually be a bit of a blessing, as it's one of the few places I can go with a friend during laptop-student rush hour and find seats/have a loud-ish conversation sans guilt. Can't wait to come back in the summer and try the gelato read more

I have been here three times - twice for gelato and once for coffee. The service has always been quick and friendly. The servers are quick to answer questions about product. This is by far some of the best gelato I have tasted. They have a mix of unique flavours. I will definitely keep coming back! read more
