This review is for the NEW SECOND LOCATION on Jarvis St. (North of King, on the east side). I was incredibly excited to hear this location opened as I was a huge fan and a regular at the Shuter St location when I worked in the area. This second location is only a couple of weeks old and I already like the vibe. There are long tables and a bench - I love the possibility of conversations when people sit at shared long tables!! The walls are still bare, and I suspect it's just a matter of time for some inspired art to show up. About the main event, coffee, the same focus on excellence followed to the second location. Come here for great coffee and excellent service! Shawn mentioned that they will be a rotation of cookies that are baked onsite - I am excited to come back to see that. Nice ambiance and quite a few tables and bar stools for seating. I ordered a flat white and got a seat no problem (weekday afternoon). Spent some time writing a few postcards :) The flat white was pretty good but I do wish the coffee was a bit stronger. Overall a nice spot to stop and chill. read more

Great value baked goods!! Almond croissants are my favourite, and adding a layer of cherry took this one to the next level! Reasonably priced as well as it's hard to find an almond croissant for under $5 these days. The Dubai matcha was interesting to try but probably would not order again. I've tried the hazelnut iced latte before and that was one of the best lattes I've had in Toronto as it was quite smooth and not too sweet. Service was efficient despite the line. Seating is pretty tight but still room to study or bring a friend. read more

This is one busy little spot! Came here this morning for a coffee (drip) and an almond croissant to kick off my weekend. The place was quite busy; with a line up of customers waiting to get their caffeine fix. One barista/employee manning the customer orders might have added a slight delay but the space doesn't really allow for multiple people behind the counter. I ordered a regular drip coffee (unsure of the roast) and an almond croissant. I sat in to enjoy my coffee. There is some basic stool and bench seating; quick drink and go kind of setting; more inline with having an espresso vs savouring a cup of coffee over conversation. My coffee was 'okay'. I get the impression they focus more on espresso based drinks. The croissant was not crisp and light but rather dense, heavy and a little soggy; very heavy on the almond paste filling. I was very disappointed with the croissant; expected crisp, flaky and just the right amount of almond paste in the middle. Not sure that I'll return to Mast myself, but I'm sure there are plenty of people who make it their regular stop for all things coffee. read more

Went here on a stat holiday and it was one of those few places that opened late and I'm so glad they do! It's a minimalist place with good coffee. I was pleasantly surprised at how good the chai latte was - creamy earthy goodness! Most places don't get the chai latte right, either too diluted or too creamy. As well, when we went there was only 1 person working and the line was all the way to the door - he was a damn good barista! speedy, efficient, and stayed calm! read more

Very small low-key coffee shop tucked away in the corner of a building. There is a very limited amount of 2-seater tables, and a few bar-stool seats inside the shop. It's a very aesthetically looking coffee shop, I love the decor inside (a great place to take Instagram photos). Their menu isn't too big, but they have the usual drinks, with 1-2 unique ones, such as a hot apple cider. Their prices aren't too expensive either, which is good. I would definitely come back and get some work done here. It is a lot quieter than most coffee shops! read more

It's hidden away on a side street intersected at Shuter; i must thank my coworker for introducing me to Mast Coffee :D I'm not usually a coffee drinker, as lattes are usually too bitter or tastes like coffee flavoured milk, but the hazelnut latte here might have converted me, as there's no bitter aftertaste at all! The coffee aroma and hazelnut taste lingers after each sip, but is not overpowering. If you dine-in, your coffee comes out in brightly coloured ceramic cups on a white saucer plate. I got a sky blue one. Feels so fancy and cute haha. Would recommend any of the cookies, esp the toffee coffee chocolate chunk; it's great for dunking. We sat at a 2 seater by the window where the sun shone over our table. It felt so cozy I almost forgot I had work to do. This would be a great alternative to studying at the usual Starbucks or Second Cup cafes. The vibe is one of those 'small conversation but overall quiet with background white noise" types. It's relatively small with only a few tables, and most people were comfortably seated with their laptops so i'm guessing they were lucky to find a table during earlier hours. Come early, order your coffee, tea, snack, and get some studying done. Or, just relax and enjoy the sun. read more

What a delight. They have a huge tea menu and their coffee is unreal! I got a latte that was to die for. The espresso they use was very rich and dark chocolaty. I also got a bag of their not-so-dark (yes, that's the name) to bring home and it was very nice. This was a great little coffee shop. I had a classic latte with almond milk and it was served to perfection. There was a decent amount of seating available for a lazy Sunday morning and I appreciated the vast amount of natural light shining in through all of the enormous windows. It was quiet and the staff were polite. The decor is aesthetically pleasing -- lots of greenery and simplistic walls. It's not overwhelming and would probably be a great place to come and get some work done. It certainly was a great place to soothe my hangover and hang with a girlfriend. Definitely adding this to my coffee list for Toronto for my next trip. read more

Found this gem after class and it's safe to say I will be coming again. I got my usual vanilla latte and snagged a carrot cake as well. The carrot cake was a delicious balance of sweetness of icing and cake. Latte was good as well, but nothing special about it. Also, who doesn't like free wifi?! Their password is "no password" - thought I'd add it in since when I came I searched the yelp for the password and nobody had it up despite mentioning free wifi. Service is friendly but I wouldn't be returning just based on that. Let's just say they are nice enough! Their business picks up around 1pm, so to safely secure a seat if you're thinking of staying in, go before then. Seating is limited! I don't find myself in this area too much anymore but as a Ryerson alumni, I know the area a bit. A lot has changed! I found myself with some time to kill and started hightailing it over to the nearby Starbucks when I saw Mast Coffee out of the corner of my eye, looking brand-spanking new! It's a year old, but still great to see a coffee shop of this calibre on what I once knew to be a sleepier corner. I came, I saw, I latte'd. I worked for a solid two hours on their wifi and found it to be perfect. Not a lot of people were around on this Friday afternoon. When you consider the crunched up, Starbucks-like alternatives nearby, this is a really awesome option. So airy. Nice vibe like you can stay awhile. read more

Shuter street brings a calmer vibe right in the middle of downtown, and Mast coffee feels like a neighbourhood cafe while being within walking distance of Massey Hall and Eaton Centre. I tried their pour over, and it is made with the utmost care. From pre-soaking the filter all the way to the careful pours with the goose neck kettle, I feel that they treat coffee with the respect it deserves. It's pretty ok. Very tiny but that's not their fault, they made a nice and open environment out of what they could. My quarrel was the fact that my cappuccino was really weak. Now you may argue that I'm not a coffee expert, but I want a sufficient amount of alcohol in my cocktail if you catch my drift. Mast coffee offers delicious coffees and london fog latte is the one I'd recommend! The cafe has great lighting and great ambience for photoshoots - done one here couple months back and the photos turned out very very nice, I think most people have found this gem and I wouldn't be surprised if I saw more people for photo shoots for their gram. Pretty close to the subway station and also to Ryerson University. Locally owned cafes near the school is very few - Balzac's and Page One so I was very glad to have found this gem. Mast Coffee is a great little spot to visit if you are in the area. Being a student this place is only a few minutes from school and is a very nice quiet place to do school work. The actual spot is quite small with limited seating, so its probably best to visit alone or with just a couple people. The drinks are good but nothing too special. This place is an oasis smack in the hustle and bustle of downtown. I feel as if I am in London sometimes. Besides having killer coffee beans, the selection of teas is highly commendable.
