Extremely Rude Service I've been to this restaurant many times and have generally had good experiences, especially with a very nice gentleman who has provided excellent service in the past. Unfortunately, my most recent experience was completely different. As soon as my family and I walked in, the woman working the floor immediately told me, "YOU'RE GOING TO WAIT," and instructed us to sit in the lobby. I was taken aback by the tone and the way she spoke to us. There was no greeting, courtesy, or explanation--just a very rude and dismissive attitude. While we waited for approximately 10 minutes, I watched her turn away more than six other customers and speak to them in the same disrespectful manner. At one point, another customer actually asked her why she was being so mean. Rather than addressing the concern, she simply mumbled a few words and turned away. I understand that restaurants can get busy, and I certainly don't expect special treatment. However, if I'm going to spend $80-$100 on lunch for my family, I do expect to be treated with basic courtesy and respect. Unfortunately, her attitude completely ruined our experience and honestly made me lose my desire to eat Chinese food that day. I hope management addresses this because the behavior of one employee can have a major impact on whether customers choose to come back. My wife and I have spent nearly half our lives in Diamond Bar. Lured by excellent schools and its gentle, sloping hills, we bought our home and have raised our kids in this wonderful city. Even though we've lived within easy driving distance of Mandarin Taste restaurant, we've only frequented it perhaps four or five times in all that time. Last Saturday, craving well made Kung Pao Chicken, this Gen X'er and voluminous reviewer for Yelp/Google placed the very first DELIVERY order of his life via Door Dash and Mandarin Taste. Well made Kung Pao Chicken imparts a wonderfully faint but distinctive "chocolate" note, derived from the chef flash frying dried chile peppers until they're almost burnt...which turns the red Szechuan peppers into a dark, almost eggplant purple/black. This flash-fry technique against a scalding hot wok releases volatile compounds remarkably similar to roasted cacao beans. The interplay of cacao from the peppers merge with the rich, malty and slightly sweet hues of dark soy sauce, Chunkiang vinegar and, yes, the glorious wok-fried peanuts they strike your palate as cocoa. And make me, your favorite Yelp correspondent, wanna shout rapturously, "Bullseye!" Alas, the Kung Pao prepared by Executive Chef Charlie Feng and his team at Mandarin Taste does not produce that wondrous chocolatey/malty flavor profile. While you get heat from the chiles, snap from the spring onions/peanuts, you're denied that epic finish on the back of your palate. Pros? * My order arrived in twelve minutes from "Send" to "Doorbell." * Easily, the hottest (temperature-wise) entree I've ever ordered for takeout and/or delivery. * The egg rolls were divinely fabulous- Crunchy, very little wilt or sag, copiously brimmed w/ carrot/cabbage/ginger + onion. This place has been around for as long as I can remember! I remember coming here when I was little and now that I live out of state, I try to come back just for this food. I love how amazing and personable the staff was. You feel like family. They have great lunch specials. All items come with white steamed rice and very filling. Came in with about 12 of my family members and we all got our own meal. It was so nice to have some green tea as we sat down and our food came out fairly quickly. Mandarin Taste is always amazing in all three categories: the food, the service, and the ambiance. We first discovered this restaurant sometime last year, when my Dad and I were looking for a new place to have lunch at around the Diamond Bar area after Sunday Mass. We were driving along Golden Springs when we saw Mandarin Taste, and decided to lunch there. We were blown away by the service. The staff were (and still are) nice, polite and prompt, and the food was absolutely delicious. We especially love the pan-fried noodles! In addition, it comes with an egg roll, friend wonton (maybe? not sure what was it, but it's crispy and delicious, and hot and sour soup (the soup was super good). 4. price is fair, $13.99. Cons: 1. I wish the Kung Pao chicken can be less salty and oily. It was not to a point you would feel uncomfortable, but it's my preference to eat healthy. Solid 4.5 Stars Mandarin Taste continues to be a regular lunch stop for our work group. We're here at least twice a month, sometimes more. The staff is always friendly, and service is quick. FOOD: For lunch, they start everyone with a cup of Hot & Sour Soup, which is a favorite of mine, and theirs is one of the best. They also have a good Beef Noodle Soup. Over the last two years, we've tried so many of their dishes and like them all. Some of my favorites are Kung Pao Chicken, Salt & Pepper Pork Chops, Black Pepper Beef, Beef with Broccoli, Mongolian Beef, Orange Chicken, Chicken with Garlic Sauce, Kung Pao Three Flavors (chicken, beef, & shrimp), Three Ingredients Taste (shrimp, scallop & beef), Dry Sauteed String Beans, Spinach, Wontons, and the Pork Fried Rice. For vegetarians, they have a Homestyle Bean Curd w crispy veggie & tofu. Since we visit during the workday, we either drink soda, hot tea, or water, but they do have House Special Mixed Drinks that look good. It's a fairly large restaurant with nice décor and several areas to host larger groups. Parking is usually decent. I have been eating at Mandarin Taste since I was 4 years old. Since when they used to have to polaroid pictures taped to the wall where you waited for your seat. Since the shopping center was a thriving place for business. I have been gone from the area for years now, but I came home over the summer and after a shopping trip at Brea Mall, I craved some Szechwan beef and nostalgia. Upon walking in, we noticed some small changes. The polaroid pictures are gone (mines was up there!) but everything else was exactly the same. Including the staff. They have of course aged as we all have, but I remember them in their younger years. We ordered all our old favorites. The pu-pu platter, chow mein, fried rice, and Szechwan beef. All of it tasted exactly the way it did the last time we had it. The consistency of this place is insane and much appreciated. The service was good too. I don't have any issues with Mandarin Taste and we always had great food and a good time here over so many years. Graduations, births, birthdays, and job promotions. All celebrated here. It made me sad to see the shopping center as desolate as it was. In the 80's and 90's, it was a busy place and again, many memories being there. I'm glad to see that Mandarin Taste has been able to remain and among so much change, they have been able to stay the same. Thanks for the memories. Please support this restaurant. Wow. We really loved the food here. The service was great our waiter was very personable and kind. We couldn't believe it when he said he is 75 years old. He looks so young! We asked his secret, he said "eat Chinese food" lol. The food was delicious we got the Kung Pao three flavor and an order of steamed dumplings (perfect texture and full of filling). The garlic based sauce with ginger was a great compliment to the dumplings. Add in a few spoonfuls of the chili oil they give you and it's AMAZING. I love the food at this restaurant. However, the service has really gone down hill. The servers are not attentive and blatantly rude. The server loves to question the amount of food we order. We had to ask the lady and the other server for refills and napkins. I gave the other server a cash tip. When our bill came we didn't leave a tip due to horrible service. When the waiter saw that we left no tip he informed the lady at the cashier. The cashier and waiter stormed towards our table and began to speak in their language. They also have tables and a separate private dining area. The menu is huge and offers all of the typical Chinese items like orange chicken, Mongolian beef, chow mein, etc. We liked everything we got, but the seafood my shu was really disappointing. For $19, mainly cabbage with a few minced up shrimp and scallops. Staff was really nice and attentive. Wasn't too busy on a Saturday night and many customers seem like regulars. We ordered take out & our food missed the mark. We ordered ribs appetizer and they weren't edible. They tasted old and too tough to eat. My husband actually choked while eating them Super scary! We also ordered chicken fried rice and it had something in it that made it spicy. I can't eat spicy due to severe GERD. I think they have used the same wok or tools they used on the Salt & Pepper Prawns This isn't the norm for them when we eat there but we've noticed when we order take out thru an app the food isn't very good. This was the worst we've had. We only were able to eat 1 of the 3 items We also notice the to go containers are smaller than what you get in the restaurant but we keep ordering because they're part of the neighborhood.
