Love it when they get my order right -- they've only messed up a couple of times in the past, but the food usually makes up for it. Unfortunately, tonight was different. This review is strictly about order accuracy and customer service. I am a repeat customer and have ordered from this restaurant many times. Tonight, I ordered ham fried rice with no green onions, along with sweet and sour chicken, fried gyoza, and cream cheese wontons. When we got home, the rice contained green onions and beef, chicken, and shrimp. Here's a picture of what I had to do to let my wife enjoy our dinner. (I had to separate the food due to a shrimp allergy.) When I called back, I was told that I ordered house fried rice, which is incorrect. I never order house fried rice specifically because of a shrimp allergy. After explaining this, the employee on the phone went silent and offered no apology, no explanation, no correction, and no option to speak with a manager. This is approximately the fifth time my fried rice order has been wrong. On prior visits, I was given plain white rice instead of fried rice, even though fried rice costs more and was what I paid for. I drive 5 miles to pick up food and don't always have time to check every item before leaving. The food itself is very good when the order is correct, but repeated mistakes, lack of accountability, and unprofessional handling of customer concerns make this unacceptable. Having inexperienced staff take orders without management involvement is clearly an issue. Due to the ongoing problems and poor resolution, I will not be returning and cannot recommend this business. read more

This casual Chinese place is great for dinner with family or friends. I've been here several times, and I especially like the egg drop soup, the appetizers, and the walnut chicken. You can get combos for lunch or dinner, and they're a pretty good deal. Service has been a little off the last few times I've come. This last time, we didn't get our fried rice until we were almost done with our meal. Authentic, clean Chinese food with fresh ingredients and reasonable prices! Mourning the closure of Chin Wah in Sandy, we finally found our new spot for tasty Chinese. Arguably an improvement over Chin Wah, as this Latino family uses fresh, clean ingredients like orange zest and ginger in the Orange Chicken dish, and fresh vegetables for the Chow Mein dish. The breading on the Sweet & Sour Shrimp is light and not oily -- my wife's stomach tells her quickly, in a not-so-friendly manner, when low-quality or dirty oil is used...not the case with Mandarin Garden. The Ham Fried Rice was better tasting than Chin Wah's same dish -- a favorite for my family for decades. They may use oyster sauce or fish sauce, it tasted better and more Asian-authentic. The family running Mandarin Garden is friendly and they clearly have big hearts! While my order was Carry-Out, I noticed how clean the restaurant and tables were, every table set and ready to occupy. We ordered: Orange Chicken ("as a combo", which includes two dumplings, a veggie spring roll, a flattened & fried shrimp, small bowl of egg drop soup); steamed veggies (all fresh!); veggie chow mein (all fresh!); Ham Fried Rice (entree); Sweet & Sout Shrimp (my wife had already served herself so the photo appears smaller than it really is); steamed rice and a small rice seasoned with soy came with. Plenty of food for dinner and leftovers for the next day. The only complaint I have is regarding the "crispy noodles" for the Chow Mein: see photo, they're the same chow mein noodles sold at the grocery store. Pan-fried noodles (yakisoba or ramen) would elevate the dish much better. Maybe this is better described as a preference on my part. Speaking as someone who has frequented Mandarin Garden for years now, tonight's dinner was very good. I have never had a negative experience here in terms of service or food, and the takeout process has been seamless. On an average night, my experience here is five stars. The inside of the restaurant is cozy and warmly lit, and it's rarely busy enough to be a chaotic environment for those with stimulus issues and/or anxiety (coming from a person with both). I do believe we walked in on a bit of an off night; our waitress was very kind and friendly, but was overwhelmingly busy between taking phone calls and dressing the tables and taking orders (this is something I don't normally dock stars harshly for). I encourage future customers to give the staff some grace and a bit of extra patience. Our table ordered 5 sets of B Dinners (a combo plan that comes with certain choices of entrées, and each one comes with choice of soup, fried rice, egg rolls, fried shrimp, cream cheese wantons and gyoza). I ordered the sesame chicken for mine, and it has never disappointed. It's a safe, delicious non-spicy option if you're not feeling adventurous with flavor. I did dock a star tonight, however, due to some observances with cleanliness that normally isn't an issue. My tea cup had a faint light red glittery smear(?) towards the top prior to my partaking of tea, which led me to believe it was lipstick or gloss residue from another customer that hadn't washed off from doing the dishes. My first plate that dressed the table (empty) had a strange texture to it... as if the plate wasn't shiny and smooth but rather dulled with a bit of a film towards the edges. I'm germaphobic enough to pay extra close attention to the dishes and water glass cleanliness, and especially given COVID circumstances, I'd urge Mandarin to keep a closer eye on something of this sort. This is the first time I've noticed these discrepancies, but if it's off putting, then order takeout. Overall, the food lived up to the standards it's held for the years I've eaten here, and I'll continue giving this great restaurant my patronage for the foreseeable future. read more

Mandarin Garden is definitely some of the better Chinese food in Utah! This place is a hidden gem, very hole in the wall vibes. We got the Kung Pao Beef, which was good but we wouldn't get again. The string bean beef was the star of the meal - it was delicious. Very toppings heavy on both - I would get double meat next time. I would do 3.5, but it wasn't awesome enough for me to bump it up to 4. I specifically wanted honey walnut shrimp, and this is a place we found that had some. It did not disappoint on that front! Everything else we got was just OK, according to both me and my husband, who is a connoisseur of Chinese food. This place has gone waaaay downhill after the original owner sold. EXAMINE YOUR PICK UP ODERS! 2 take out orders ago they left out am item. I had to return while my guests sat at the table. Then LAST time, they did it again. And they got huffy when I returned a bit miffed. They gladly took my money, but seemed irked that I wanted it made right. We have been coming to this place for the past 10-15 years on Christmas Eve. We have a group of 25. I called to make a reservation back on December 2nd for the December 24. I was told that we would an e a reservation. The original owners knew our family, and would accommodate us every year. We didn't know they sold out this year. This place was a complete joke. I will never be returning. We went tonight and waited for 3 hours for our food and never got it. They helped online orders and door dash. They had no servers. The lady helping us get drinks wasnt even employed there. Terrible service. We still had to pay for what they brought us which was nothing. I will never return. My wife and I ate there tonight. We were the only ones in there which is never a great sign. The young lady that took us to our table asked "do you want some water" before we even sat down. We said that's be great and she didn't respond. She handed us some rough menus and mine had dried food stuck to it. We asked if the Family dinners come with the appetizers, entrees, and rice all on the same plate or if they come on separate shareable plates. She said they all come on one plate. They DID NOT. We had way too much food. The food came out fairly quickly which seemed strange, but fine. Fried rice wasn't great and didn't have egg. Lemon chicken barely had any sauce on the chicken and plate. Sweet and sour pork was a little rough and seemed to be out really fast... Again, the young lady seemed annoyed we were there and had no customer service. They only had ONE song playing the entire hour we were there. She didn't ask if we wanted any other drinks outside the water from earlier. When my wife crunched on some of the ice she got a gross taste of grease or something strange. The plates, utensils, to-go boxes and chopsticks were all sitting on tables in the dining area. We finished eating and waited for a check that didn't come. After some time I went to the front desk where I saw the young lady sitting and asked if she brings a check or if I'm supposed to just pay there. She told me I can just pay there. First patronized this establishment in 2008. Traditional Chinese-American menu. Think Panda Express only small batch, like they charge extra for if you're buying whiskey or gin. Quality stuff. Loved it. Today, pretty sure there was a chicken beak breaded and fried in my lunch special. Probably not but just as well have been, given the rest of the lunch. My daughter bit down on something and was certain she had chipped a tooth. She was eating beef and broccoli, also in the lunch special. I've been coming here for years. During the past two years it's not been as good, maybe bc of Covid. So I stopped going for a while. I've gone back twice in the past 30 days and it's been on point both times. So I'll continue to support this place seeing they're getting back on track. Portions are huge and food is well cooked and flavorful. Update 3/22/22: So I've been ordering from here weekly or eating In restaurant once per week. Everything is great and has been consistent. Service in house is slow because of staffing issues but they are so friendly here it isn't a bother. The food is what brings my family back. Unfortunately, our longtime friend, who used to live within a mile of the Mandarin Garden, moved to some God-forsaken place in New York state! Some of the questions Yelp asks are pretty dumb: for instance, asking about street parking, private parking or a parking garage nearby, when the Mandarin Garden is located in a small-to-middling open shopping mall, right off Highland Drive, with a large parking lot in between. There must be a technical term for this arrangement. I kept answering "no" to these questions, thinking Yelp would offer an option that made sense; as it didn't, I felt obliged to mention the parking here. Hmmm. Where is Yelp's HQ? Showed up with a small group at 9:00. The restaurant hours are listed until 9:30 on weeknights and they refused to serve us. Change your hours and turn off your lights if you don't want the business. The restaurant sign was lit up for Mandarin but not for Garden. The men's bathroom wasn't clean, had a hole in the wall, and the sink faucet wasn't fastened securely. This place is some of the better Chinese food we have come across in Salt Lake. The Orange Beef melts in your mouth. The only thing I would do next time is start on one of the less spicy dishes because, while those were excellent too, they just don't fill the tastes buds as much as that Orange Beef. Since Chef Ming's closed we have been looking to try other places in our area. We tried this place and unfortunately it was a disappointment. We got take out and they did not used spill proof containers like other places. Just stryofoam with the one tab and the container with brown gravy spilled all over everything else in the bag. What a mess! The beef and broccoli was mostly broccoli and not enough beef for one meal - the person had to cook other food. Some of the broccoli was good and some was bitter. Not going back. Book mark this place!!!! Seriously best chinese in Utah hands down!!! It's taken me almost 2 years to find decent chinese food. I'm not even that picky. For me this place is definately out of the way but it is worth the drive. It's in a strip mall by rite aid. Simple decor. Friendly service that is very attentive. I've had a different server all three times I've been here and each one was pleasant, friendly and fast. During the week they are open until 9:30pm but on Fridays and Saturdays they stay open to 10pm. So on date nights you can have a 9pm dinner and beer. Yes they have beer! Its $3-$4 a bottle. So for lunch they offer lunch combos or bento boxes. Dinner items are served with steamed rice. Or you can make each item a dinner combo for $2 more you get fried rice, soup or salad and fried shrimp gyoza and spring roll. I hear both the egg drop and hot and sour soups are amazing but I love the salad with the amazing lemon dressing. I seriously love this dressing! My personal favorite is the cashew chicken. If you like cashews, celery and water chestnuts you will be in heaven. I think the kung poa could be a bit spicier. But still good. While the menu is still American Chinese it's what you would expect in good food. The place is family owned and closed on Sundays. I highly recommend visiting this place. read more

Right off the bat, I will tell you that I LOVED THIS PLACE! I want to become a regular there. We went on great night, the Saturday before Memorial Day. Everyone is out of town so it was not very busy; we were able to get right in at 6:30pm. The restaurant was really clean. The seating areas were comfortable and well decorated. The only issue that had was the lighting; it seemed somewhat dim and it was a bit difficult to read the menu. The staff was very friendly. We were seated quickly and given water. They refilled my water about 8 times that evening; they were very attentive. My wife commented that she wished that the staff was dressed a bit more formally, as they were dressed a bit too casual. My wife visited the restroom and found it to be decent. The menu was quite broad with many options. They have great combination options at wonderful prices. The thing I liked the most was, even though we all ordered our own combinations, they served each part of the combination on separate plates so it was easy for all of us to share entrées. The entrées we ordered were Chicken Chow Mein, Pon-Pon Chicken, Beef and Green Beans, Mongolian Beef and Fried Rice. The appetizers that came with the combinations were egg rolls, fried shrimp, cream cheese wontons and Gyoza. They also served us Egg Drop Soup or Hot and Sour soup. The total bill before tip was $56 for four people. Pretty reasonable and it was a lot of food! The soup tasted really good, served at the right temperature. All of the appetizers were awesome; they left me wanting to order more each of them. The fried rice was really good also. The Chicken Chow Mein was good, not the best I have had, but it had a lot of really fresh vegetables. The Pon-Pon Chicken was really good. It had just the right amount of breading with a delicious sauce; I will definitely get this again. The Mongolian Beef was really good as well, had just the right amount of heat for me. The best dish of the evening was the Beef and Green Beans. It was money! So good! If I had only this dish for the rest of my life, I would be a happy man. Very Disappointed to say the least. Ordered Egg rolls and Beef Lo Mien(soft) with extra beef. The egg rolls were crispy and mushy on the inside with hardly any flavor. The Lo Mien was flavorless, lacked vegetables and the noodles were mushy. read more
