I am not being hyperbolic when I say that this restaurant served me the worst shrimp I've had in Houston. I ordered the "mambo shrimp" since it's apparently very popular, and got 20 instead of 10 because I was feeling pretty confident. First, they came absolutely swimming in a butter-type oil with big chunks of garlic and what looks like a fair bit of spices, but it somehow barely tastes of butter, garlic, or spice. It's confusingly bland. The shells were super soft and wanted to stick to the meat, which disintegrated into a paste as I was chewing. The shrimp hadn't been purged at all and the veins were THICK. Just a textural nightmare. The ... tartar sauce (?) that came with it was a 2 oz container only half-full, but it's fine because it wasn't great either. Runny and bland, with a whisper of lemon flavor in it. It got me halfway thinking I need to take a test because I seem to have lost my sense of taste. Sure did smell nice, at least. The highlight of the meal was the corn, but you kind of have to work hard to ruin corn. I powered through 6 shrimp with the help of my own cocktail sauce, seasoning, and tabasco, but then I gave up. So here's the thing, let's compare this place to a somewhat generic Latin seafood takeout spot. Not extremely expensive, not the greatest yet satisfying at least. Don't expect first class treatment unless you speak Spanish to be honest. The rice is decent, skip the grilled overcooked shrimp and stick to the fried stuff. The beer drinks are good and the best part is that they are always served "cold cold". Nothing destroys a Michelada like a lukewarm beer in my opinion. Music is loud and ambiance is loud so get ready to use your vocal cords if you sit inside. Avoid busy times like Friday after 6, reality is payday Friday gets crazy hectic and the wait for food is long. After waiting 20 minutes the hostess happened to be walking by and we had to ask him where our server was, there was a lot of servers attending to the other tables and some servers where sweeping and cleaning around us which one happened to hear us talking to the hostess and took our order. The server assigned to our table brought out our food and drinks but never checked back out on us. Halfway through our meal I wanted some water because the horchata was way too sweet but the server never came so we had to get up and order our own water at the bar. The server finally came when it was time to close our tab and had the audacity to ask if we wanted to added a tip which I said no. Love Mambo seafood, been to many locations and always the same quality food and great service. They always have a lot of waitresses and bus staff. This place has a large lot plenty of parking and tables. Music playing as always too. It was such a great weather day out me and my friend arrived at open 11am, they opened up the outside deck and rolled up the tarps. It was about 70 degrees outside with a breeze and sunny. Seated quickly and server took our drink orders. We ordered and had our food within 10-15 mins. Not bad as once they opened people starting showing up. My friend ordered the large combo Ceviche and I ordered the Monterey grilled chicken breast. They have really good ceviche and this was the combo with shrimp and fish...great price and a huge serving. The Monterrey chicken breast is also a must try. This minimalist plain restaurant is always busy! It's interesting looking at the wide variety of fishes in the long display case. The waiting staff are still wearing masks to serve, thankfully. l had grilled grouper one time because I'd never had grouper. It was good, moist and tasty. I have had mostly good seafood here. The grilled salmon is usually perfect. The side dishes are also good, fresh grilled veggies, a nice rice pilaf, a small grilled corn on the cob. Serving size is just right with minimal doggy bags needed. So I was very disappointed when I ordered gar fish nuggets, because I've never had gar fish! Sadly, the gar fish died for nothing. The nuggets had the backbone left in, which was interesting. But the poor fish was overcooked, tough, chewy, dry. And the little cup of nasty mayonnaise was a bad match for the bland fish. Ok, so this little strip mall find in North Houston was pretty tasty! Since I don't speak Spanish, thank goodness for photo menus!! I pointed at a seafood tostada and the Mambo shrimp. The tostada was great, and the shrimp were tasty, but I had to dig i to the sauce with my hands to peel them so got mighty dirty. For the prices, you get an insane amount of food. These platters could comfortably serve two people. Our waitress was kind enough to give us an extra side of rice when she heard we were splitting a plate and was more than willing to answer any questions that we had. The food was decent. I tried the "famous fried rice" that Mambo is known for and... I don't know. It's not really anything to rave about and tastes very much like the rice you could order at any generic Asian restaurant. The fried fish and shrimp were average; anything tastes good if you fry it, honestly. The grilled fish and shrimp were mediocre as well but paired well with the pico de gallo and lime. For less than $10 for most of the platters, Mambo is definitely a place to try if you're hungry and don't want to put a dent in your wallet. read more
