Shrimp mambo's sauce with fried rice and veggies
    Karina N.

Our server's name was Karina like my name! This location is closer to us but we've been fans of the Mambo's location on 45N in Greenspoint for many years! We ordered the empanadas with shrimp, cheese, and black beans. We also ordered the shrimp plate with the mambo's sauce. The veggies were not too great but the rice was good. It wasn't very loud there on Saturday. I also enjoyed a cucumber non alcoholic beverage.

Stopped by Mambas on 1960 for lunch and was pleasantly surprised! It's actually in the old TGI Friday's building, and they didn't do much remodeling -- so it still has that same classic Friday's layout and vibe. Since we went during lunch, it wasn't crowded at all. I signed up for their app and got half off the pork fried rice, which was absolutely amazing -- packed with flavor and you can make it spicy or not. We also tried the shrimp appetizer, which was delicious, and the bacon-wrapped shrimp, which was really good too (though I wish it came with that buttery sauce). She made me some but it was okay lol The service was great, friendly, and quick. Prices were very reasonable, and overall, I'll definitely be going back -- especially for that fried rice and shrimp!

Somethings is different about this location from the others. Definitely didn't have the same feel and atmosphere. My drink, pepino, was very good. Food was good. Oysters were fresh. The micheladas were not so we sent them back. Our waitress was great and understood as the mix was different than the norm michelada rojas. She, Maggie, was a great server and there was a gentleman who checked on us frequently too. Might have been a manager.

Takes forever to get your food, almost an hour just for some fried shrimp rice, terrible service and staff is awful.

Kind of a weird setup though, because the bartender told me I could only use the $20 gift card if I was paying with a gift card... which felt a bit off, but whatever. Overall, this place was just okay. I get the feeling the boils might be the star of the show here, so I'll probably come back to give those a try. I ordered the sampler with fried green tomatoes, boudin balls, and stuffed jalapeños. The flavors were there, but the boudin balls were a little too salty. For my main, I went with the etouffee and asked for both shrimp and crawfish. It was flavorful, with a solid dark roux that I liked. I sat at the bar, and Crystal was my server. She was super friendly but admitted it was her first time making the Bloody Orange Lemon Drop. I gave her a couple of pointers for the second round, and she nailed it - so props for that! In the end, the experience was just fine. Not bad, not amazing. I'll probably come back to try the boils, but for now, it's a solid 3 stars.

Unfortunately, I noticed a big change this time around. The breading on both the fish and shrimp tasted different--much saltier and kind of overpowered the flavor. Not sure if the recipe has changed, but I personally prefer the original breading. That light, well-seasoned coating was part of what made me keep coming back over the years. Hoping this was just an off day or that the original recipe makes a comeback soon

We ordered: - Fried Calamari - Fried Seafood Platter | Fried flounder, deviled crab, baby shrimp, fried oysters, jumbo shrimp The fried calamari was actually very good. The batter was light, crispy, and perfectly salted. The fried seafood platter was very lackluster. Unlike the calamari, the batter was soggy. Authentic Dominican/Caribbean food in Willowbrook. Who knew?…read more I remember this place from a birthday party decades ago. The space was a bit bigger (they've since redesigned it smaller), but the crowds were smaller. Success hasn't tarnished their food. It was a very rainy and soggy afternoons and the place was packed. We managed a table and ordered. Can't go wrong with the delicious shrimp mofongo. I honestly think the sauce is the icing on that cake, made all the more delicious with a squeeze of lemon. Whew! Service was fast and dinner came out at a reasonable pace. The owner is so friendly and stopped by our table to make sure things were good. Better than good! If you're in the Willowbrook area do yourself a favor and stop in for lunch or dinner. Prices are a little steep, but what's isn't these days?

The juice was on the sweet side so just watered it down (wish they have smoothies), but they get 5 stars overall for the flavor and the price point. Plenty of parking as it's in located along other stores.
