I'm being extremely generous on giving this place two stars. Our waitress is what saved this place. She was kind, welcoming; informative; and came to us occasionally to make sure we had what we needed. As for the food.... it was really gross. We ordered three special rolls and only REALLY enjoyed one. I let my Waitress know on the roll we REALLY didn't enjoy and sad to say they didn't offer to switch it out for another dish or take it off the bill. The wasabi is weirdly colored and the ginger wasn't fresh. Considering they charge $15/$20 a roll I expected better quality. The spicy mayo had a spoiled taste. I didn't want to risk eating more Incase of food poisoning. Save your money and skip this place. The decor, staff, is nice. The food is a huge NO! (I really wanted to like this!) left sad and upset. Pictures can be deceiving sometimes and I believe that's the case here. Besides the staff being friendly, I don't have anything good to say about the food here. I was there with a large group of friends and none had raving reviews on their order. Dumplings were dry, Fried Red Snapper lacked flavor and didn't come with a sauce of any kinds. Came in on Friday night and the place was almost empty. This place has no parking lot or valet parking option. Wall art was vibrant, however there was too many things hanging from the ceiling. We had chimi sushi - hanger steak, a lot of rice, and cabbage on top with sauce. Nothing special. El tolete cold bland steak, cold fried cheese and thank goodness for the sweet plantain on top which actually gave it flavor - it was suppose to have bacon which was left out. I was pleasantly surprised by MamaSushi. This is a restaurant that I have heard of time and time again, and finally had the chance to visit for a birthday brunch. Let me start off by saying that they were extremely accommodating. We were a party of 40 people, and they were able to seat us together and take our orders in a somewhat timely manner. The bottomless drinks included sangria, mimosas, and bellinis. They could have been a little more attentive with how frequently the pitchers were being refilled since there were about 20 of us sharing 2-3 pitchers (so they were finishing pretty quickly), but I will admit it was extremely busy that day. We had the option to choose from their brunch menu. I had the mangu and it was very tasty. I would say that it is one of the smaller plates from the menu. There's more of an emphasis on presentation than portion, so if I was on an empty stomach, I would have most likely remained hungry after eating it. So just FYI, if you are very hungry, this is probably not the plate for you. My friend, however, had the steak and eggs with French fries and the portion was large. It was very filling and she wasn't able to finish it all. This is a great place to have a boozy, party style brunch. Honestly i was so disappointed with this experience. Let me start off with the wait time. My friend made a reservation for 3pm and we had to wait until 4:15pm to be seated. They kept telling us our table was "getting prepared" and "we're working on your table". Also, they are picky about who has to check their coat and who doesn't. They forced our whole party to check our coats due to "policy", but then allowed multiple people after us to go in with their coats. Also witnessed a person get in with no ID but ours were checked twice. Also saw a woman get placed in an ambulance when we first got there so shows you what kind of brunch this really is. Finally we got seated and we realized there were no fire exits besides the front door which is alarming especially in a place that sells a ton of hookah. We order our food and everyone gets their food at different times. They knew we were a large party and they would come with half pitchers of drinks for our "bottomless brunch" so half of the table wasn't served. I ordered the steak and eggs which is honestly the only reason this review got two stars. The steak was amazing, but I don't eat runny eggs and i wasn't able to change how i wanted my eggs cooked. They also only cook the steak well done which was fine for me but may be an issue for others. I also wanted ketchup for my potatoes and was told that they do not have ketchup. Overall I wouldn't recommend this place. Maybe if they honored reservations and allowed the place to be less crowded, it would be a more enjoyable experience. read more

The fried rice in the bentos was also hard and tasteless. None of the plates had ginger or Wasabi. My first time at MamaSushis for a brunch of 14 people. The person in front was a little rude at first considering that they wrote down our for the reservation wrong. After sitting down the space allowed for all of us was great. We could all move around without feeling on top of each other. Congrats! Now Passaic has it's own sushi restaurant. It seems to be the first sushi place in town. Located in the heart of Passaic downtown in former Peoples Trust Tower Mama Sushi is spacious, about 8,000 square feet. Ambience is very pleasant, more of a club than the restaurant. There is a small bar with kind of small tv screens. Sushi bar is pushed all the way to the back. Why? We and other patrons had to wait for food longer than average time. Kitchen is definitely understaffed. Waiting staff is nice, sweet, a bit shy and they speak English which is not always the case in Passaic. We felt like staff was trained to make a push for drinks. Menu was not impressive and food was even less impressive. Sushi, Really? Arugula was good small cute salad with just 2 ingredients - greens and cherry tomatoes. Bento box was a smaller square version of bento box. The bowl with sup was placed inside and was rocking because it did not fit. Sup, probably was supposed to be Miso soup, but did not taste like one. It had a LOT of floating scallions, was lacking seaweed and was cold. Bento box had generous portion of rice. Rice did not taste like Japanese rice, was falling apart and was cold too. Shrimp was fresh, medium size in some sort of a pleasant sauce. In the middle of bento box was a sprinkle of microgreens and a flower-very cute. Sushi did not taste like sushi and was falling apart. Everything looked good. And here the thing about expectations... Seeing "Coming soon Mama Sushi" had built a lot of anticipation. This building was standing empty sooooo long that I thought soon there will be no need to drive to Clifton or Montclair for sushi. Whatever they serve is not that bad, it just is not sushi, does not have neither a taste or a flavor. With the exception of cute dish with 3 sauces-Sriracha, Soy and sweeter version of Sriracha. I'm pretty sure it's illegal to have the music in this restaurant as loud as it is inside the restaurant!!! I've been to concerts and music festivals and the music isn't as up in your ears and body. We tried to ask them to lower it down a little bit and nothing. They should at least offer some ear protection for the amount of damage they are causing to our hearing. SMH!!!
