I love discovering sleepers! Smack dab in the middle of Alexandria's Grand Mart plaza, the owners of Panaderia Latina (other spanish restaurant in same plaza) cashed in on this hidden gem. Mama's asian neighbor is the Tempt Asian Cafe on Little River Turnpike. I was really digging the chicken graphics outside of the place. Lets have a taste with what is inside! Their menu is pretty clear cut and I was surprised that they served pork or cheese papasu. A few items they offer is Pollo a la Brasa, and carne asada. At first walking in, I thought it was gonna be like a regular Guapo's type joint. I went ahead and ordered. I took the safe route. I remembered that everybody at work was raving about the chicken sandwich and after The Taco Place La Tapatia's (Woodbridge) misstep, I would rather be safe than sorry. I took a bite of the chicken sandwich and was quite impressed. It tastes as if they used the pollo a la brasa meat to fill my overstuffed sandwich. If not, they could have fooled me. They were not stingy on the meat. The sandwich came hot as the toasted bread housed tomato, tangy mayo and grilled onions. Bummer they could not replace my fries with yuca but Mama's fries were seasoned just right and better than generics. Good, quick meal for a mere 6 bucks? You got a deal, Mama! Overall, Mama's cooking is not that bad. Although, now I have the urge to play Cooking Mama on the Wii now.....?

As a loyal customer, I expect to be heard. I may still come back, because I truly enjoy the food, but I really hope management and ownership takes this seriously and provides proper training in customer service. No one should be made to feel dismissed or ignored. My first impression of Ser was its ambiance - nice mood lighting, comfy seats, and just the right amount of ambient noise. We had a reservation (recommended!) and were quickly ushered to our seats and given menus. The waiter was courteous, prompt (always re-filling our water glasses), and helpful when we had questions about the menu (e.g., about which wine he preferred). This was our first (but not last) time visiting Ser, and our initial foray into the menu was pretty basic. My wife and I split the jarrete de cordero (lamb shank), three tapas dishes (croquetas, pan Catalana, and berenjenas [fried eggplant]), and two cheeses. My wife's favorite tapas was the pan catalana, which was bright and slightly salty/sweet in flavor with great texture in the balance between the crispness of the bread and the softness of the tomato. I preferred the croquetas, each of which coated my mouth with the warmth of hot cheese and rich meat. The lamb shank consisted of a massive piece of meat on the bone, resting on a bad of mashed potatoes and slices of sweet peppers. The lamb itself was what it should be: thick, tender, and juicy with a rich, slightly gamey flavor. The addition of the mash and peppers made it even better, and I can say that this is the first time that I actually enjoyed peppers - before I just tolerated them, even in my own cooking. These peppers paired perfectly with the mash and lamb, and I relished every bite. I would be tempted to order this same thing again on our next visit, but I have to know what the meat paella is like. Anyway, it all paired perfectly with the Spanish tempranillo (that our waiter helped me select). I would be remiss if I did not talk about our to-go box. The lamb was too much for us (and by "us", I mean my wife, who was not up to the task of eating her share of the main course), and we asked for this to be boxed to take home with us. And I was blown away when the remains of our dinner were brought back to us already deboned (but with the bone included). I found this to be above and beyond, as I was not looking forward to cutting that meat off the bone (to put in my next day's lunch, which was glorious), not the least because I am not very good at doing this. And that we still got the lamb bone meant either stock for a stew or sharing a treat with our four-legged housemate. We really appreciated this!

But maybe they were having a lot of problems that day. First, the salsa con queso was very runny, and had a strange taste. The salsa was also very liquid so maybe it's just badly blended together, but was hoping for something a little more.. The chips were good. They are thin, and they brought plenty of them. Tacos were pretty good, the fish had a unique taste that I couldn't place. Just.. strange in that way that wasn't exactly bad, but I didn't get the best feeling. The Chorizo taco was much better. Unfortunately I was disappointed by how expensive it was for what amounts to Costco ingredients. I lament not paying more attention in high school Spanish because of the three people serving us, only one spoke English, and that made it tough to ask any questions about the food. They give you a receipt with a QR code requiring you to use Toast to pay, which conveniently downloads a temporary app to your phone WITHOUT ASKING. That wasn't cool... Not at all. Overall it .. wasn't great. I LOVE TexMex food but this was mediocre, service mediocre, difficulty being understood and ordering, runny queso, strange fish, and expensive for what I could have gotten at Taco Bell for less.

I really liked the plantains, but the cheese rice was not was I expected. It was more like grits than cheesy rice. The meats were cooked to how we requested it, and of course tastes especially good with the sauces. My favorite cuts were the strip steak, beef rib, and picanha. I didn't really care for the sweet breads, but that is a personal preference. Value wise, the Parrillada platters could easily feed 4 - 5 people, so we had plenty of leftovers.
