This is a really hard review to write in the context of Yelp. Mama Bear's is a very small restaurant in Jackman ME, and I would guess most people in this very rural community have never heard of Yelp. That being said, the food is decent at a very reasonable price. Please be aware though that interacting with the staff requires a bit of flexibility. As their menu states, "no substitutions or special requests" A member of our party found out the hard way. Also, do not ask for separate checks. If you are polite and do not make waves, you will get reserved but polite service. This is a small, local business that deserves our support. read more

Waited 1.5 hours for breakfast. Food finally arrived and it was awful. Pancakes were so overcooked and hard. The omelette was decent with canned hash and a cold slice of yellow cheese. Omelette came with 3-4 home fries lacking taste. Rough breakfast all around. read more

When I mentioned to a friend that I was headed to Maine he said I HAD to try a Maine lobster roll in the place that gave it it's name. So when I saw lobster rolls on the menu I thought of him. But ordering a lobster roll in a place where half the clientele is wearing camo and blaze orange seemed very strange. Coastal food and hunting are two things that have rarely intersected in my life. The roll was good but not amazing. I was honestly surprised by how small it was. $20 for half a sandwich and six onion rings seemed a bit steep no matter what the sandwich was filled with. But the service was sweet. I was especially grateful for the ability to borrow their phone considering I had no cell service and hadn't yet reserved a hotel room. That was very helpful. I understand that businesses struggle for staff. But we got to our table and ordered our drinks. Then over 12 people came in. Each of them had their orders taken before we ordered. We spent 1 1/2 hour at least, you have to know your room and process it accordingly. I will say the food was very good. read more

I never like to rate a restaurant on its service but I have to say the waitress that works here is the nastiest waitress I have ever had in my entire life and I am in my 50s. the food was good. we had breakfast. But this waitress was so rude to the six of us and rude to other tables people actually got up and walked out. I don't know why a restaurant would hire and keep this woman on staff. Please please hire someone who can actually put a smile on her face and be nice to the customers. My wife and I visited Jackman, we decided to try someplace new and ended up disappointed. Our breakfast was blah at best, I had to put extra syrup and butter on my French Toast to try to make it taste like something. Bacon was under cooked. The waitstaff was fairly friendly with us, but we overheard people nearby wanting to modify their breakfast order. They were told that no modifications can be made on the weekends. Came here twice while we were in Jackman Maine. Once for lunch and once for breakfast. Breakfast being the better of the two. Lunch, the table ordered 2 lobster rolls, a broil haddock entree and a grilled chicken sandwich served on a hot dog roll, which was extremely weird. The lobster rolls were good and stuffed with lobster, when I order mine, I asked the waitress if they could go easy on the mayo, and she informed me that they make everyone fresh and the lobster meat isn't premade, sweet for me! I only wish I order fries because the chips that was served with it were stale. The broil haddock meal looked good, but my wife's chicken hot dog roll sandwich with peppers and onion was just strange. When she initial ordered it she ask to have in on a kaiser roll but she got a hot dog roll...LOL! Would probably skip coming here for lunch next time. Breakfast was a different story. All I heard from previous people that stayed at Cozy Cabins ( that's where we stayed ) was how good the pancakes are at Mama bears. That's what we ordered, I ordered my with a side of sausage. I forgot what else the rest of the table ordered. The pancakes were really good, I can really appreciate a good pancake because that it 1 breakfast item I can't cook better than most restaurants. Service was good, I didn't know alot about Jackman so the server told us some interesting info. Like their graduating class is 7. Yea 7 people, pretty crazy. We came with a group of 15 European visitors for lunch. The waitresses were nice and hospitable, the food was mediocre at best. The owner however turned out to be a screaming banche and demanded payment from the group leader even though her son had promised a complimentary lunch. I can only write about breakfast, but it was GOOD!! Hot coffee and plenty of it. The blueberry pancakes are what dreams are made of, and the home fries are the real deal. I think that the eggs might be fresh and local, they were done perfectly each time. Their bread it also fresh and homemade, thick slices. The place is clean and the wait staff is super friendly and accommodating. We ate there 5 out of the 7 mornings, and it was great each and every time. We drove 30 miles to Mama Bear's from the Crab Apple White-Water Rafting Company in The Forks, Maine on recommendation from the owner. When nine very gay guys walked into this small and extremely rural ten-table restaurant in tiny Jackman, Maine at 8:30 PM on a Saturday night, only 30 minutes before closing time, I thought we might encounter a little resistance. Though the proprietor/waitress seemed a little confused that such an unlikely group had walked in the door, we were given good service and good food. The cook seemed a little hostile at first but after receiving several sincere compliments on his food, he lightened up. Try the Maine shrimp ravioli. It was a masterpiece of taste and presentation. I had one of only three prime rib specials left. It was really good. Being only 15 miles from Quebec, Canada there were a few Quebecois items on the robust menu. They serve beer, wine and hard liquor and have a small 6 seat bar. They also serve breakfast starting at 4:00 AM M-F and 6:00 AM Sat.-Sun.! Beware the common moose crossing over US Route 201 at night if you don't have a huge pick-up truck like many in Jackman, Maine! read more

This is definitely a place to visit and eat while youre in Maine. I was there visiting my great grandmother for her birthday and this is where we had her birthday dinner. They give you your drinks in Mason Jars. I'm southern and asked for sweet tea so it fit coming in a Mason Jar. Also, I had never heard of a Whoopie Pie, but if you love sweets it is definitely something to try. The food was awesome and the atmosphere is very very friendly. Mama Bears Restaurant was a very, very welcome site after not really finding much for dinner our first night in Jackman. We knew it was there, and it was in walking distance from our cabin we had rented on the water. The first morning it was great, the second morning it was even better. Our waitresses were attentive and polite. The coffee flowing, which is truly how breakfast should be. The first day we had eggs and bacon/sausage, the food was hot and fresh. My husband loved their bread. The second morning, yes we went back again, I decided on the blueberry pancakes. They were OUT OF THIS WORLD!! On our long ride home, we talked about my pancakes, which of course I had shared with my husband. We decided that not only were they fantastic, the syrup was the final OMG factor. We did not eat lunch there, we were too full from our breakfasts each day, but heard that their lunches were just as good. We will be visiting them again next year for sure. My sister and I were the only patrons in the cafe when we ordered but we had to wait until after two groups of men arriving after us had ordered and were served before we were served. Choices for food in Jackman are VERY limited. I stopped in here for lunch and ordered their signature sandwich and onion rings. The onion rings were only so-so, but the simple sandwich was perfect for lunch. The lettuce and tomato were fresh, and the sun-dried tomato mayo was perfect. On our family trip to Jackman we decided to eat here. It was the first night of our trip and I failed by picking this place to eat. The service was slow even though there was only 8 people there including our family of 5. The food chicken burger was just a piece grilled chicken no toppings, the kids ordered pasta and they all got different portion sizes. I ordered the Chicken Parm from the pasta section of the menu and I got a sandwich with chips. When I questioned the waitress I was told the cook took it as a sandwich. This was at 7pm and chicken parm as a sandwich was not an option on the menu. NEVER AGAIN.... Aside from the server without a pulse, the food was horrendous and inedible. When I asked if I could order something else after ONE BITE of my fried chicken (fried to within an inch of it's life) the server said, "uuummmm, i have to go check." She came back with a victorious look and said with a smile, "yep! you can order something else but you have to pay for both since the portion of the chicken is already messed up." ...........................seriously? Aside from the point of making someone pay for a meal they hardly ate and hated being poor business sense, they would actually have served that to another customer once put on my table?!?! I am in Jackman Maine snowmobiling with my wife. We were out for a long day on the trails and didn't feel like cooking dinner so we went the mile and a half to town and decided to give Mama Bears a try. Big mistake. Walked in and sat down at a booth and waited a good fifteen minutes for the waitress / bartender to acknowledge us. She came over plopped the menus in front of us and put the 'specials' tab on the table and walked away. No 'sorry it took awhile .... can I start you out with drinks ... how are you?' - nothing. My wife rolled her eyes and I said 'well, she *IS* alone here and there were about 10 people in the place ... let's just order something'. I ordered Liver and Onions and she just had a burger. Even though I ordered carrots I didn't get them. One small piece of liver (although it was cooked perfect) but my wife's burger was not very good and was clearly a frozen burger type variety.
