I'd really like to give this place a better review and, based on the other reviews I see on Yelp about Malt, perhaps my wife and I simply experienced the place on a bad day, but....man, it was a really bad day. We arrived to the restaurant for Sunday brunch and were surprised to see the place was nearly empty. It took a bit for someone to come to seat us, but the woman who did so was friendly and accommodating and, unfortunately, that's where most of my positive comments end. The service was indifferent...simple things like we weren't asked if we want water, we weren't asked how our food was... Our food arrived VERY quickly...I'm assuming because the kitchen wasn't doing much else. Honestly, we both wished they'd taken a bit longer and done a better job. My omelette was overcooked and very, very salty (even for me, with an admitted salt tooth). My wife's fish and chips were just disappointing; thick, gummy batter over underwhelming white fish. We each finished about half of our plates and politely asked for the check. As mentioned above, no one asked us anything about our meals the entire time. I usually really enjoy Malt. The food and liquor choices are excellent. But today, the bartender is phoning it in. She is not engaged and isn't making drinks the way they are described on the menu. For example, I ordered a "New Mexican", which is supposed to be anejo tequila, a fire roasted jalapeño, lime juice, fresh berries, and agave nectar. Instead, I got silver tequila, no roasted jalapeño, and simple syrup. Why? "Because it tastes better" than what's on the menu. Really? From the second our group walked in, without reservations, Malt impressed. The staff was kind, attentive, and fun. The ambience was very warm and comfortable, prefect for great conversation. Malt has a fairly large NA beer list if you're looking for that. My friends that ordered regular beer said they enjoyed their selections. The food was perfect. I always have a hard time passing up risotto and the Cod risotto was delicious. The fish was cooked perfectly, and the risotto was creamy and perfectly made. The portion was a little smaller than I was expecting, but I came in starving. I think it was perfectly portioned for the price, just should have ordered an app or bowl of clam chowder (my friend said his was delicious). Everyone at my table enjoyed their meal. Price was very reasonable. Think including tip it was around $40. Do yourself a favor and stop by Malt. And I highly recommend the cod risotto. I would honestly give this no stars if I could. we waited 15 min for a drink that tasted like straight rubbing alcohol. when we finally put our food order in, and we waited 30 min before we called it quits and asked for the check (we never saw our food). I stopped into malt on a Wednesday night for a last meal before flying home. I had some other places in mind but as soon as I saw the coq au vin in other yelp reviews I knew this was the place to be. The food didn't disappoint. The cocktails were fun and well mixed. I got. "Malt Whitman" a take on an old fashioned with cherry brandy. Very well balanced and not too sweet. The mussels were excellent and not chewy, very fresh and lots of garlic! The coq au vin was incredibly tender and flavorful. Apparently it has been on the menu since the chef started there almost 5 years ago. I mentioned that I would be heading back to Tokyo and didn't know when I would be back in Rhode Island, and the wait staff surprised me with a dessert. Their "chocolate bomb" is three inches of mousse on a chocolate crumble base covered in a thick ganache. Incredible. Excellent service, great food, caring staff. A colossal disappointment. We've been to Malt a few times, but our last visit will exactly that. This place is just not what it used to be. Goat cheese "beignet" was nothing but a blob of cheese, breaded and deep fried (hint, that's a "croquette, not a beignet). Burger was "ok", but nothing special. Fish and chips were a disgrace to Newport - so greasy it dripped on the plate, and fish wasn't flakey but mealy instead (a clear a sign of using frozen fish and frying it without defrosting it properly). French fries were also floppy and greasy. Service was "ok", but not amazing. We sent the fish back, and then had to wait 1/2 hour for them to drum up a simple panini (which was "ok" but again, nothing special). No apologies were made on the inedible food. read more

We decided to spend Friday night in Newport and someone gave my sister in law a few recommendations and Malt was one of them. On the way down we got nervous that there would not be availability to eat there so I called ahead and asked if they had availability for 7:30 for four people and they quickly accommodated us. We arrived and the place is really cute and cozy and is definitely a great date night spot! It is small but it did not feel cramped in any way. I think the menu had a good mix of items to appease any type of eater. They had a good draft beer menu as well with local offerings which I always love. My sister in law and I both got the Pan Roasted Cod which our server raved about and it did not disappoint! The Cod was a generous portion, tasted fresh, was perfectly cooked. It was served over a creamy mushroom risotto which was also cooked perfectly and was decadent! I would come back the 40 minutes to Newport just for this dish! Do yourself a favor and order this is you like seafood. My fiance ordered fish and chips which again was super fresh and cooked well! We came here after a failed attempt at another local restaurant. We were pretty excited, we all loved malt. On a Saturday night, we were seated right away with a party of 4. After ordering drinks, from their extensive menu, we all knew exactly what we wanted. I got the fish and chips, caitlin got a sandwich, saralynn and jono a salad and a shrimp nacho. We all loved all of the food. The fish and chips were extremely crisp and fresh, it melted in my mouth. Also, the fries are UNREAL. They are definitely hand sliced and extremely fresh. One thing I noticed this time, was the uniqueness of the restaurant. Each and every silverware piece, is different, mismatched. Every single plate/small plate, is from a different set. It is the coolest concept, and I fell in love. It was so artistic, unique, and pleasing, I want to do it for my house! Also, we noticed that every single table had a different salt and pepper shaker, all with a different theme. Some were Turkey's, some were shells, some were cartoon characters. FOOD: We were there around 3:30 on a Saturday which was still brunch/lunch and not yet dinner. I was kinda boo-hoo-ing about it because I wanted a filling entree. I decided to go with the Bisque and Shrimp Nachos which were amazing! The Shrimp Nachos were different in a good way. The mix of curry and salty chips was the perfect match. Now my boyfriend ordered the Rosemary Burger and claims it is his favorite burger of all time. So keep that in mind. He said the bacon, fried rosemary and mustard spread was on point! Malt is run and staffed by people who care about food and beverage, and most importantly about service and customers. That's a rare find in the restaurant world these days. We ate dinner here twice in three days during the Newport Jazz Festival. We've been coming to Newport for years and have eaten in the worst and the fanciest in Newport, you know the places right on the water with massive dining rooms that are run like factories where the kitchen is on autopilot and servers barely say hello. Malt is the opposite of that. It's a friendly neighborhood place, low on pretense and high on delivery, with great food and exceptional service. Our first night here was late on a Friday, we arrived sometime after 9:30 and were hungry from a full day of music in the sun. Our waitress, Zoe, greeted us warmly, addressed all of our questions and, upon request, gave us her recommendations. Three of us had the coq au vin, one the linguini and clams and the other the risotto. Of the three who had the coq, two were native French who waxed poetically about the flavors, consistency and the childhood memories it evoked. It is exceptionally good...so good in fact that on my second visit I had it again. The linguini also received a perfect score, and pleased both a grown Frenchwoman with exacting tastes as well as an eleven year old foodie-in-training on the second visit. Steak and risotto were solid and delivered on expectations both in flavors and execution, with the only demerit being that the risotto was a little mushy. Scallops, ordered by my husband on our second visit, were spectacular, with a playfulness (scallops served on potato scallops) and a seriousness (delivery of flavors that wowed) in equal measure. Wine selection offered great choices at equally reasonable prices to the food (the most expensive items on the menu are the scallops and the steak at $28 each, while the coq au vin is a mere $16 for a bowl of heavenly cooked poultry in wine, asparagus and polenta.) We ordered a delicious wine for $38 which satisfied our serious oenophile friend from Lyon, and on our second visit we had cider from their great selection. Now is a good time to mention that my husband and are gluten-free. Our request for gluten-free dishes was taken seriously and we felt well taken-care of on that front. On our return visit, a Sunday night, we found a great band in the front of the restaurant playing Celtic tunes. Our request to sit in the very back in a more quiet section was immediately accommodated and, lucky for us we were waited on by the same waitress. She was equally attentive, engaging, and remembered some of your preferences...in other words she cares about her job and makes sure her guests feel well cared for. While this should be the norm of hospitality, sadly it is not and from our experience in Newport is rather hard to find. So there it is, it's a 5 star review for all that and more. It has a farm-to-table vibe from the freshness and selection of the ingredients as well as the great cotton napkins that feel soft to the touch atop natural wooden tables with wild flowers in small vases and different vintage salt and pepper shakers. If you come here don't expect overpriced seafood standards, or tired-out fashionable food concepts, there's no view except the friends and family you decide to share your meal with, and the service will be kind and professional. If you can handle that, then come see for yourself why Malt is a place that cares in equal measure about what they serve and who they serve it too. read more

Best cocktails in Newport. Hands down. The Oscar Wilde is my favorite. The food is delicious.

This is one of my favorite restaurants. I love everything about it from the drinks to the food to the staff to the atmosphere. The menu has something for everyone on it and I have never ordered anything I did not love. They have a great little bar as well if you are looking to just come in for a drink. The cocktail menu is full of creative and delicious options - I am partial to the Wild Child and the Blackberry Flirtini. I also enjoy their beer list because they have an excellent selection of craft brews on tap. The wine selection is also nice, I just tend to be drawn toward the cocktail list when I visit. For food. It is hard to know where to start. The burrata salad is a decadent way to start. There is enough of it to share, but you might not want to share. The balsamic reduction on it is is excellent. I also love the croquettes as an appetizer option. The mussels are also delicious. For main dishes, I love their steak frites, but also love their cod risotto. I have to be honest, I was a little nervous to order the cod risotto because I was worried I would not like it, but the cod is cooked perfectly and the risotto is outstanding. They often have a lamb special as well, and I have ordered and loved that. Try to save room for a dessert or two to share because they also make great desserts. Basically, we try to make excuses to come here as often as possible because it is such a nice experience. I love bringing family and friends here when they come to visit us because I know there is something for everyone and I feel like it is a great way to have a night out in Newport. Nachos are amazing, full of spice and flavor and can serve as a meal for 1 or as an app to share. The Malt Burger is also delicious - garlic aioli, cheese, onions and cooked just as requested. A friend recently moved to the neighborhood, so after helping him move some boxes, we walked the block to Malt. They have a really good draft beer and cocktail list. Since I was hot from moving boxes, I went with the martini special, cucumber watermelon. It was nice and refreshing. If you see it on the menu on a hot summer day, get it! We started with the mussels, that were delicious. We ordered extra bread to soak up the tasty broth. We could have used a whole loaf. A lot of items on the menu sounded good, but we all went with the Malt burger and I would recommend it. It definitely hit the spot. Read reviews and got the Thai shrimp nachos was afraid they might be too spicy so I had them put sauce on the side. No problem sauce was delicious with just a hint of a kick. Very mild. So glad I got it! My husband and I shared the amazing beet salad with goat cheese Yummy! Definitely recommend it. My husband got the cod with mushroom risotto, very creamy and delicious . Would have loved to try the mussels and the Brussels sprouts appetizer but too full, can't wait to go back and try something else, lots of good things to choose from . This place is adorable: Cozy, intimate, relaxing and stowed away on upper Broadway. All their ingredients are FRESH and you can taste it! Started off with Thai Shrimp Nachos which substituted wonton chips for tortilla chips which made for an incredible appetizer- just make sure you eat it quick because the curry sauce will drench the wontons and make 'em soggy quick! I ordered the Malt burger which comes with caramelized onions, bacon and bleu cheese (although I substituted for Swiss). The burger came somewhat charred but the inside was flavorful! They have a very unique cocktail menu. I got the Mona Lisa which came in a cute Z-Martini glass, PURPLE! and with a curly lemon garnish. Talk about making an effort with presentation! I always admire a place that adds the extra touch to make something special. Anyways, the Mona Lisa had a prominent ginger taste at first which I ended up enjoying a lot. We called ahead to find out hours since Yelp didn't have them listed. Dinner was served until 10 pm and the bar closed at 1:00 am. Our rating is based on one visit: 4+ stars, damn close to 5. The wait for a seat on the dining side was short and we were on the late side (about 9 pm). The bar side was boisterous and bustling the entire time. We were served cold water while we looked over the many drafts to choose from on the menu. Two types my husband asked for had just become unavailable. The beers were cold and delicious. We each ordered a "small plate" appetizer. The Caprese salad was beautiful, fresh and tasty. The loaded Potato Croquets were quite a large app, 5 cheesy large balls. ;) We both loved my husband's rosemary burger and fries. Hot, very flavorful hamburger, crispy medium cut fresh fries. I ordered the Cod Risotto but it was out (sigh) so instead I ordered Fish and Chips. The fish was lightly breaded, not as crispy as I would've liked. The fish itself flaky and moist and the chips were cut more wedge style and very good. All of the food was served hot and in a timely manner, displayed beautifully and we enjoyed attentive service. After some debate, based on Yelp pics, we caved in and ordered the Malt Chocolate Bomb dessert. It was awesome, light and unique. So this was an interesting establishment. Myself and three friends came in here during a Patriots game. It was a dead atmosphere, literally one table was filled. This place was a disgrace to Newport. I was told I was being too loud during the Patriots game. There was one table filled. I had to whisper and silently high five my friends during the game. I'll never go back to place and if you want to watch sports you shouldn't either. Do you know how hard it is to slowly high five someone? It's rough. I love Newport but not this place. Go Pats!! You gotta love a place that has burgers *and* Grüner on the wine list. By the glass, no less. We came in Thursday night for a pretty late pre-festival dinner. There are a bunch of restaurants in a row and it was tough to decide looking at the menus but the fact that these guys have Touch Tunes eliminated the need for a coin toss. We sat in the corner at the bar not too far from the kitchen, which was hopping. The bar was too. The beer list wasn't calling to me but the lines were clean and it was at least diverse (don't get me started on my "enough with the IPAs!" rant - Malt keeps things interesting, even if the selection doesn't have anything particularly exciting). Also, their lines are clean and the beer nice and fresh - praise, Buddha. The bartender immediately came over to ask us about drinks and to see if we had questions. The waiter wasn't too far behind, which was nice. I have to say, the service (speed and accuracy) was off the charts for a busy place on what I imagine is the busiest weekend of the year. We started with the chick pea fritters. Wow. Not only were they tasty and presented nicely but they came out piping hot and with a yogurt sauce that complemented them perfectly. I had the Malt Burger and Kris had the steak panini. The food is excellent and again, service is quick. Everything is fresh and nicely seasoned and it comes out of the kitchen hot - nothing sat under a heat lamp. Our server had a bit of an attitude. "Vintage chic tavern" is a nice description of the vibe but def an understatement, as this spot exceeds all expectations. I'd rank my meal here as top 5 of the best meals I've ever had (yes, in my life). I was here for dinner during Labor Day weekend with two friends, so we all got a variety of food. We shared some apps - croquettes were amaze, maple glazed Brussels sprouts were to die for (who knew maple syrup with Brussels sprouts was a match made in heaven??). Now for my main - the cod risotto is literally the most epic dish in the world!!!! The cod was nice and buttery (cooked to perfection), and a perfect bite of risotto + cod just melted in my mouth. My friends enjoyed their main courses a lot as well. We all got cocktails which were elegant, strong, and delicious. Our minds were so blown by how amazing our meal was going, that we just had to order dessert too. We knew we couldn't go wrong with anything we ordered by this point, and as expected the gelato was fabulous. This place came highly recommended by the owner of the inn my mother and I are staying at while in town. We made a reservation and got there early right before the rush and were seated right away. Came out for a casual dinner on the babymoon. I was the guinea pig to try out cocktails for a future bachelorette party location. You have to try the ravioli, apparently it rotates but the basil cream sauce remains the same. And thank god it does because it was amazing, light but savory, definitely a must. Also got the coq a vin, chicken thighs with wine, which was great. The service was friendly but beyond that is was just a below average experience. We tried the tapas for an appetizer, just some chopped up olives, thick hummus, and tabouli salad that lacked flavor served with fried pit chips- nothing exciting. For dinner we ordered a chicken dish and the cod risotto. Both dishes just lacked flavor and the risotto had too many peas added into it. My wife ordered a Margherita with so much ice that it was pouring out of the glass as she attempted to sip it. Too many other options in Newport, recommend eating elsewhere. read more

My boyfriend took me here for Valnetine's day. We had a reservation at 6:30, and I know it was snowing, but the place was dead. This should have been a sign. We weren't able to see any menu online, so we were going in blind. They had a good selection of beer on tap, some craft beers which we both enjoy. We were at a high top table near the kitchen, with a TV behind us, so it was a kind of loud and also extremely dark inside. We had to use our cell phones to read the menu! Everything was really pricey, and I was in the mood for chicken, so I was trying to decide which meal to get. I asked the server some questions and she was super nice and knowledgeable, but kept pushing me towards the scallops (a really expensive dish). My boyfriend knows how much I like scallops and since we "were in Newport" and Newport is known for good seafood, I should get them and not to worry about the price. So I got them, and wish I didn't. First of all, for over $30, I only got 4 scallops. I had the first one and it was OK, kind of tasteless. I had the second one and realized they were a bit under cooked, but figured it might just be that one so I ate a third one and they were definitely all under cooked. I didn't eat the fourth one, and my boyfriend tried a bite and agreed they were under cooked. By that time almost all the scallops were gone and I did not feel right complaining about the meal, as we had eaten almost all the scallops. (again, there were only 4, not much time to even realize there was something wrong with the meal). However, I will say, the brussel sprouts with bacon were amazing. For such an expensive meal, we were dissapointed. Especially for our Valentine's day meal. Maybe my fault for being swayed by the server and my boyfriend into getting the scallops, but for such an experience food item, they should know how to cook them properly. The atmosphere is a casual bar vibe, but yet feels elegant and homey. The drinks are amazing and the bartenders are not afraid to experiment with different types of liquor and flavor. The quality of food is top notch. I highly recommend the mussels and the coq au vin. Each dish is plentiful, cooked to perfection, and makes you want to come back to try something new. Signs of a Dying Restaurant, as Seen in a Visit to Malt Last Night 1. Decor/Cleanliness. Malt is filthy. Look closely at your chair before you sit down, and observe the grimy stains from hundreds who came before you. I swear the upholstery has never been cleaned. Restrooms have seen better days; the toilet is broken, and the air is fragrant with the aroma of beers come and gone. Look around, there's dust EVERYWHERE - does anyone ever clean here? Our salt and pepper shakers were splattered with crusty ketchup from previous diners. Look up, there are cobwebs on the chandeliers. Well, it is almost Halloween. 2. Food/Portions. I had the coq au vin earlier this summer, and it was pretty good - nothing special, but well-seasoned and a decent amount of food. Imagine my surprise when we found found ONE yes ONE chicken thigh on the plate. Food cost - maybe 75 cents? Menu cost - $17. Absurd. My companion got a "special" that was built around five little necks (maybe a dollar in food costs?) that cost the same. Unbelievable. Curried chickpea soup with quinoa? Huh? Malt has an identity crisis, with no sense of purpose. I swear it seems like they've shrunk the steaks, too. 3. Service. The one bright spot. Jeff took great care of us. I've worked in restaurants myself, and recognize the downtrodden look of servers who know their place is going down, but Jeff was cheery the entire time. He was the highlight of the evening. 4. Overall: When Malt opened, it was one of the best in town: homemade buns, hand-formed burgers, ice cream made on the premises. Now everything on the menu has the feeling of being cheap and mass produced. It's hard to believe they're using local ingredients when they're featuring cherry tomatoes in October. I guess other people feel this way, too; the dining room was maybe half full on a Saturday night, and by 9.00 it was a ghost town.
