Sat at the sushi bar and service was great. I understand why they have so many good reviews. The orange chicken was excellent, which was quite the surprise. The sushi rolls were good. Very delightful spicy tuna crispy rice and halibut sushi.

We ordered takeaway from this spot - my boyfriend was working nearby and brought the order home. We tried the Malibu Roll, Lox Roll, gyoza, and seaweed salad. The lox roll (called a "philly roll" elsewhere - salmon, cucumber, cream cheese), the gyoza, and the seaweed salad were on point. The Malibu roll (lobster, crab, amberjack, lemon, and more with sliced jalapenos and spicy eel sauce) was phenomenal - fresh, flavourful, and beautifully plated, even in takeout packaging. Every item was boxed properly and we received napkins, chopsticks, and sushi condiments. The wait time for the order was fewer than 15 minutes - my boyfriend barely had time to drink a Sapporo there as he waited to pick it up. With such delicious sushi and a pleasant and efficient staff, I'd go out of my way to come here if I was in Malibu. Great casual option if you don't want to get gussied up for Nobu.

This is my go to for faaaaabulous, well crafted and superb rolls especially the Shiso Luna. Incredible No way Whhaaaat? Heaven Like buttah! It's layered so well that the roll separates in an oh-so-amazing journey inside my mouth. Unbelievably well done! I have never never ever eaten halibut (top layer) and yellowtail in a roll that did not but instead tasted so superb. With the mysterious shiso to pepper it up! So fresh. So fresh! And let the record show ... Chef knows I love Kama, so he got sous to freshly cut one up for me. And by golly! Quiet please. I need to pause and delight in this. No one can take this heaven away from me. Not on a mundane Monday! Not even if LA is celebrating downtown for the Dodgers. I love the Dodgers and am so proud of them ... but my love for Howdy's Sushi ... no can do. I'll watch you on YouTube Ohtani-San! ps Double Spicy Tuna - a very simple and popular name for something NOT a single sushi place in Malibu (wink wink) can match. The miniature (artistically crafted) sprouts on each piece - wow! How does chef do it! This is Michelin star level... but shhhh. Yes Images included. This time I didn't forget. So great. So great!

Very limited seating inside since it's a tiny space. They have 11-course omakase for $120. We got: 1) 3/5 spicy tuna crispy rice cakes ($15) - which my family didn't like, but I thought it was decent. 2) 5/5 mango poke bowl ($24) - I been craving poke for months, been years since I've had. The mango was really fresh, firm, balanced with sweet & slightly sour flavors. The fish was tuna & salmon I believe. Comes with raspberries & blackberries. Salivating as I'm typing. I can def eat another bowl. Too bad Malibu is so far. 3) 3/5 three hand roll combo: spicy toro, yellowtail & salmon ($30) - these are pretty standard 4) 3/5 classic bento ($30): Cali roll & cucumber salad, 3 nigiris, shrimp & pumpkin tempura. The shrimp tempura was the best thing in the box. It was so good, we got an order of just shrimp tempura. Everything else in the box was pretty standard. 5) 5/5 shrimp tempura ($14) You know it's good when you don't even need sauce. The batter was so crispy.

Best service. Vano here is the MAN.

Food incredible. Service incredible. It felt like Christmas even though it was Thanksgiving and I loved that.

    Mango Poke Bowl

By far one of the best poke bowls I've had in California! Everything was so fresh and delicious. It was a slightly pricier bowl than what I'm used to spending, but for the portion sizing, they don't skimp out. 10/10!

What a cute hidden gem in Malibu! This restaurant took me by surprise because I was very skeptical at first but now this is my go-to place for sushi in Malibu!!! Kane and Josh were our servers and they were so attentive! A+++ for their customer service! Kane recommended the Malibu roll which was spectacular! Loaded with flavor with a zest from lemon and mint! Definitely recommend getting the sashimi bc the fish here is so fresh! There's a lot of parking and seating is limited in the restaurant

What a crew! And what fresh crab and fish! Loving those big ole rolls, aka sushi burritos. It's a small spot - intimate and cozy and casual. But don't let that confuse you. The fish is amongst the freshest and it's certainly amongst the best sushi I've had in Malibu. Blows away the place near Ralph's. Sorry, just keeping it real. If you're looking for a casual, delectable bite of fish, look no further. With unpretentious pricing, you've found your fishing hole here.

Cute little spot with quick service, fresh sushi, and an adorable waiter who was friendly and informative.

    Fried Rice

Sat outside at Howdy this evening with my fiancé. The staff are all super friendly, and the sushi is delicious. Our favorites are the crispy rice and the salmon sashimi. So fresh!

    5 pieces salmon sashimi

Food: The food was good. My salmon sashimi was elegantly presented. I also had the cucumber salad. A downside is this restaurant has a scant amount of vegetable dishes on the menu. Like most Japanese restaurants, they had tempura, which is deep fried and unhealthy for those with cholesterol issues. I thought the pricing was a bit steep compared to similar restaurants. Service: I love that they have outdoor seating, as we enjoy Al fresco dining accompanied by our dogs. I felt a bit rushed (pushed out) by our waitperson. My husband was still hungry after eating his meal and ordered another item; when the waitperson brought it to our table, he promptly asked, "Would you like your check?" The waitperson was very young and this is probably his first job; however, I'm not sure if he was afraid we'd try to skip away without paying or what. Ambiance: Very nice and casual. The outdoor dining area is limited, but very clean - a definite plus. Summary: Overall, the food was good and fresh, but pricier than most Japanese restaurants. The portions are very small. Dinner ended up costing us about $80, which isn't horrible in this day, but the tiny portions were not worth the amount we were charged. The feeling of being "pushed out" made us uncomfortable and was a definite turnoff. Also, Howdy's one and only lavatory was out of order.

I've been coming here since they first opened, and it's remained a favorite for a reason...it never misses. There are a few things I consider completely non-negotiable, and the surf and turf roll is one of them. It's just that good! And if you love yellowtail sashimi, theirs is consistently fresh, delicate, and beautifully done. I always add extra jalapeño's, but do you. We went as a group of five and shared a bit of everything (the only way to do it, in my opinion), and there were so many standouts. The pumpkin tempura was unexpectedly addictive, and the scallops we had prepared two different ways, were absolute perfection... the kind that just melt the second they hit your palate. What really makes this place special, though, is the full experience. The service is warm and polished without ever feeling overdone, the cocktails are crafted just right, and the outdoor seating has that relaxed Malibu charm. It's the kind of place you keep coming back to, and quietly recommend to people who appreciate when things are done right.

Their Happy Hour deals are served until 5pm and are a great value. You can get a sushi combo or a sashimi combo or a 3 hand roll combo for $18. There are also some deals on bowls, beer, and wine. The deals ARE eligible for takeout which is nice. I opted for the sushi combination, which came with 5 pieces of nigiri (albacore, yellowtail, shrimp, tuna, salmon) and a choice of either a California roll or spicy tuna. I got the spicy tuna. It was a great amount of food and the sushi was wonderful. The size of the nigiri was generous without being cumbersome to eat. The ratio of rice to fish was on the lower end as well. I was a little bummed they didn't include ginger in the box but they did give soy sauce and chopsticks. -1* because it took much longer than quoted for my order and because the packaging was cracked and so when I tried to use the top as a "bowl" for soy sauce it leaked and got all over my countertop. Nonetheless, I would definitely go back and would order the same thing. Highly recommend it for sushi in Malibu at prices almost unreal.

The ocean view, the energy, the pacing of the meal. It is the kind of place my fiancé in finance and I go when we want to remind ourselves why we work so hard. We started with the Yellowtail Jalapeño which was impossibly fresh with this delicate citrus brightness and just enough heat to feel intentional, not overwhelming. The Black Cod Miso was, of course, perfection. Silky, buttery, slightly sweet with that caramelized glaze that just dissolves. It is the kind of dish you pause for. The Rock Shrimp Tempura was crisp and addictive with that creamy spicy coating that somehow feels both light and indulgent. And the Wagyu tacos were tiny but deeply rich, almost decadent in a way that makes you laugh a little when you realize how quickly they disappear. But the moment for me was the pour of Louis XIII Cognac. The aroma alone is stunning. Warm dried fruits, soft vanilla, toasted oak, and this subtle floral note that feels almost romantic. When you taste it, it unfolds slowly. Hints of fig, honey, spice, and this deep almost nutty richness that lingers forever. It is unbelievably smooth, almost silky, and the finish just stays with you in the most elegant way. Yes it is expensive. Obviously. But it is also flawless. If you understand luxury, if you appreciate detail, if you want to feel taken care of in a way that feels effortless, this is it.

Unfortunately, despite…read morebooking in advance, we were told upon arrival that we still needed to wait another 15-20 minutes. After waiting, we were offered a table tucked away in the corner of the patio, facing another table instead of the ocean view the restaurant is known for. Since the atmosphere and open patio were one of the main reasons we chose this place, we declined and waited another 5-10 minutes before finally being seated at a better table in the middle of the patio. On top of the already high menu prices, valet parking was $20, and a 20% tip was heavily pushed as well, which made the overall experience feel even more overpriced. The atmosphere itself was probably the strongest part of the experience. The open-air setup was pleasant, the tables were spaced apart nicely, and the music was great. There was a DJ playing throughout the evening, which created a relaxing vibe without being overwhelming. Unfortunately, the food and service did not match the prices or expectations. The menu was confusing and required a lot of explanation from the server. We ordered edamame, seaweed salad, and four different sushi tacos. Each taco was around $18, yet they were extremely small -- you could easily eat two and still feel hungry. Considering the pricing, the portions felt unreasonable. The wait for the food was also surprisingly long, especially for such small dishes. To make things more confusing, the edamame -- which is normally served as a quick appetizer -- arrived at the very end of the meal instead of first. There were also small details that reflected poor organization. No ginger or wasabi were provided, and the soy sauce container on the table was completely empty when we sat down. When I mentioned it to the server, she acted as though she had already refilled it, even though it had clearly been empty from the beginning. At the end of the night, they also did not provide a paper receipt. Instead, they quickly scrolled through the bill on a tablet, making it difficult to properly review the charges before paying. Overall, the restaurant has a beautiful atmosphere and potential, but the long waits, tiny portions, lack of attention to detail, and extremely high prices made the experience disappointing.

This was by far one of the best sushi meals we have had. Everything was scratch made by them, extremely fresh, many ingredients imported from Japan. Such thoughtful preparations and pairings, utterly delicious. Chef Jae explained everything very well and was personable. Beautiful setting, modern and romantic. They also have a great ala carte menu we will be back to try. A true gem!

Chef Jae guides you through a thoughtfully crafted $190 18 course "Taste Forest" that's sure to delight. When my husband and I showed up at the neighboring lounge (which does not open before the first Omakase dining slot at 5:30 pm), we weren't quite sure what to expect. When we told them we were there for the Omakase dinner at 5:30 pm, the staff kindly let us in out of the heat while they continued to prepare the space for service in both the lounge and restaurant. They don't have a liquor license so all cocktails are sake-based, but none the less enjoyable. They also offer beer and wine. We were offered a menu while we waited, and yes - any drink you purchase in the lounge may accompany you to your dining experience. You can also add on a sake-pairing to your omakase meal for $55 each. We very much enjoyed a Yuzu Cocktail and the sake pairing. The customer service was fantastic, personable, and filled with intention - but if I were to provide constructive criticism - somewhat clumsy on the delivery. Chef Jae had everyone introduce themselves and included a Chef mentee on finishing up the plating of the sushi. Chef Jae is talkative and clearly enjoys speaking with guests - this all lends itself to the homey feel of the experience - but some staff were so soft-spoken it was difficult to hear them as they introduced our sake pairings, and sometimes the service seemed poorly timed with the courses. I think with a little rehearsal of how they want to approach dinner service (mainly timing, introduction and flow) would provide some more confidence and better execution of the experience they clearly wished to impart. The food was fantastic, and truly felt like a journey. Everything is prepared in house, and of the best quality. My husband and I are sure to be thinking about our experience here for a long time, and will be recommending others to come check it out. Note: If an omakase experience is not in your budget, they also offer ala carte items.
