The sushi itself, the sushi chefs, and the fish quality were all great. It's a very small restaurant with 5 seats at the sushi bar, a small 3-4 person bar behind, and 2 tables outside. We got the Malibu roll, some blue fin and yellowtail nigiri, the salmon sunrise (carpaccio), and the miso black cod. Everything was delicious and fresh, and the sushi chefs were very friendly. However, the service was very mediocre. The lead server was very inattentive and overwhelmed. That said, there were only 4 groups there and they had 4 servers, so you think they could handle it. We had to ask the chef to get our server's attention to finally take our drink order, and he immediately forgot our short order. He never returned to check in, and watched me select the tip on the payment machine at the very end. Would return for the food, but next time take it to go. read more

We ordered takeaway from this spot - my boyfriend was working nearby and brought the order home. We tried the Malibu Roll, Lox Roll, gyoza, and seaweed salad. The lox roll (called a "philly roll" elsewhere - salmon, cucumber, cream cheese), the gyoza, and the seaweed salad were on point. The Malibu roll (lobster, crab, amberjack, lemon, and more with sliced jalapenos and spicy eel sauce) was phenomenal - fresh, flavourful, and beautifully plated, even in takeout packaging. Every item was boxed properly and we received napkins, chopsticks, and sushi condiments. The wait time for the order was fewer than 15 minutes - my boyfriend barely had time to drink a Sapporo there as he waited to pick it up. With such delicious sushi and a pleasant and efficient staff, I'd go out of my way to come here if I was in Malibu. Great casual option if you don't want to get gussied up for Nobu. read more

It's Saturday night around 7:30 p.m. There are only four customers inside, all seated at the bar. I'm greeted by a young man who asks whether I'd like to sit inside or outside. I choose outside, and he tells me he'll bring a menu. Ten minutes pass. No menu. He never returns. Another employee - a woman with a long braid - is darting in and out, clearly busy, but never once acknowledges me or says hello. I eventually go inside to request a menu. The same young man asks if I'd like water; I say yes. The water never arrives. The woman with the long braid continues going in and out of the very small shop another five or six times. I'm seated directly outside the door, yet I'm completely ignored. A third employee appears, and it's clear there's confusion about who is doing what. Still, no one takes responsibility. I have to ask - again - if my order will be taken and also request water once more. At this point, I ask the young man directly whether I should just leave and go somewhere else, because it's obvious their operations aren't dialed in. I'm hungry and already know what I want: the blue crab roll and the Mexicali roll. The food comes out fairly quickly, and while it is fine and did what it needed to do, nothing ruins a meal faster than inattentive service. No one checks in to see if I need anything. At one point, the third employee mumbles a quick apology and mentions they want to close the shop door. I won't be coming back. The overall service communicated a clear lack of care, and what they managed to do exceptionally well was leave me with the impression that I didn't matter at all. read more

This is my go to for faaaaabulous, well crafted and superb rolls especially the Shiso Luna. Incredible No way Whhaaaat? Heaven Like buttah! It's layered so well that the roll separates in an oh-so-amazing journey inside my mouth. Unbelievably well done! I have never never ever eaten halibut (top layer) and yellowtail in a roll that did not but instead tasted so superb. With the mysterious shiso to pepper it up! So fresh. So fresh! And let the record show ... Chef knows I love Kama, so he got sous to freshly cut one up for me. And by golly! Quiet please. I need to pause and delight in this. No one can take this heaven away from me. Not on a mundane Monday! Not even if LA is celebrating downtown for the Dodgers. I remember going here in July 2025, and it was great. I ordered a spicy noodles or something and it was exactly what I was hoping for. This year when I went on the Fourth Of July it just wasn't a satisfying experience. The spicy noodles weren't spicy despite eating the entire thing. Also, the bathroom had an out of order sign but they were using it for storage. There is very limited seating for this seemingly overrated place on top of everything. We got: 1) 3/5 spicy tuna crispy rice cakes ($15) - which my family didn't like, but I thought it was decent. 2) 5/5 mango poke bowl ($24) - I been craving poke for months, been years since I've had. The mango was really fresh, firm, balanced with sweet & slightly sour flavors. The fish was tuna & salmon I believe. Comes with raspberries & blackberries. Salivating as I'm typing. I can def eat another bowl. Too bad Malibu is so far. 3) 3/5 three hand roll combo: spicy toro, yellowtail & salmon ($30) - these are pretty standard 4) 3/5 classic bento ($30): Cali roll & cucumber salad, 3 nigiris, shrimp & pumpkin tempura. The shrimp tempura was the best thing in the box. It was so good, we got an order of just shrimp tempura. I called a few minutes ahead of time to see if it was too late to eat in because it was 30 minutes before closing they said they would service me and my girlfriend because last call was at 8:45pm. After arriving they saw us and said we can only order to go so we said no problem. 5 minutes later 2 customers came in and said if they can order to eat in they were kindly sat to a table. Me and my girlfriend felt very uncomfortable and discriminated because we were denied what they offered to other customers effortlessly. Aside from the bad service the food was very pricy for basic sushi. There wasn't really anything unique for it to be overpriced but only came here to try it for the ratings. Would not recommend to anyone trying to find good sushi, it tastes basic but double the price because the area it's in. read more

Malibu Sushi By Howdy really hit the mark. I came in skeptical because the spot is tiny. But everything was dialed in. The spicy tuna hand roll had the perfect balance of heat and richness. The rice had that warm-to-the-touch feel that tells you it's fresh. And the sashimi? Just melted. Each cut was clean. No chewy weirdness. Just pure, ocean-bright fish. It's one of those places where less is more and they know it. The staff had jokes, in a good way. Chill vibe but still on top of it all. Plates came out with no lag. You can tell they're proud of what they serve. The place is intimate but doesn't feel cramped. You can actually hear the ocean if you catch it right. MIGHT just be me though. lol The whole thing felt effortless. From seating to service to check, it was smooth. Clean space. Real energy. No ego. Just top-tier sushi and a team that gets it. Malibu Sushi by Howdy is a newer japanese restaurant in the Malibu Colony near Malibu Country Mart. They have plenty of free parking in front of the restaurant. The food was pretty good! The mango poke bowl was a surprise with each bite because of the mix of different fish and fruits. I would definitely get it again. I also got the iced matcha which was refreshing to drink. Staff is very limited here. There was only one waiter who was working all the tables. There's seating inside and outside the restaurant but it's pretty small. Food: The food was good. My salmon sashimi was elegantly presented. I also had the cucumber salad. A downside is this restaurant has a scant amount of vegetable dishes on the menu. Like most Japanese restaurants, they had tempura, which is deep fried and unhealthy for those with cholesterol issues. I thought the pricing was a bit steep compared to similar restaurants. Service: I love that they have outdoor seating, as we enjoy Al fresco dining accompanied by our dogs. I felt a bit rushed (pushed out) by our waitperson. My husband was still hungry after eating his meal and ordered another item; when the waitperson brought it to our table, he promptly asked, "Would you like your check?" The waitperson was very young and this is probably his first job; however, I'm not sure if he was afraid we'd try to skip away without paying or what. Ambiance: Very nice and casual. The outdoor dining area is limited, but very clean - a definite plus. Summary: Overall, the food was good and fresh, but pricier than most Japanese restaurants. The portions are very small. Dinner ended up costing us about $80, which isn't horrible in this day, but the tiny portions were not worth the amount we were charged. LA sushi scene is plentiful, but Sushi by Howdy lands squarely at the top of the list. Their ingredients are extremely fresh (even for take out which is hard to do well!!!) and their flavor pairings are innovative while still being appealing to everyone. You could bring someone here who isn't into sushi and turn them into a big fan. You honestly can't go wrong with what ever you get. The rolls, no matter which I've ordered, have all been excellent, we love the crispy rice and sashimi equally. I always say I want to try the ramen but I haven't yet because the sushi is just too good! Skip Nobu (overpriced and annoying) better than your nextdoor spot, and while I love Sugarfish it can start to get old because it's always the same thing. I love to order take out here for out of town guests and casually be like "yeah this is our go-to place for take out" and they're like whaaaaaat? SO GOOD!
