This place is pretty hit-or-miss. I've had great meals here, and I've also had some really bad experiences. The worst experience I had was when my side of home-fries had a distinct taste of dish soap and were incredibly overcooked. That being said, it isn't always bad. It has days where it's really good, and their omelettes are usually quality. I'd say give them a shot. At the very least the servers are always nice. read more

Over the past ten years, I have sampled diners throughout New England, and even a few in Colorado, and in most cases, I was satisfied. But The Makris Diner has now become my hometown favorite. First and foremost, I go to a diner to eat, and I have never had better meals than at Makris. I tend toward omelets, and these are the best. The eggs are light and the ingredients are fresh. My sons are more the pancakes and french toast types, and if given a choice, they want to go to Makris. Need I say more? The second element of any diner visit is the coffee. I never used to pay much attention to the coffee at diners. It was what it was because I had to drink what they served. But at Makris, the coffee is worth the trip itself. The dark roast is always fresh, bold, and hot. And unlike most diners, where I spend as much time looking at the bottom of an empty coffee cup as drinking my coffee, my coffee is refreshed constantly. Which brings me to the third and, in many respects, the most important quality of Makris, the people. The service is quick, efficient, and friendly, as it should be. But at Makris, you feel truly welcome, regulars and newcomers alike. You're not just another table (or counter stool) they are trying to turn over. My standards for diners have been altered. Before, it was about the tangibles that I could measure: service, cleanliness, food, and coffee. But now, I also have an intangible measurement of genuine care for the customer. In my book, Makris is the best at all of these. No where else can you find this type of mix. read more

The waitress had one of those annoying customers that think they are the only ones that are important calling her over every several minutes changing her order or requesting something else. Truly horrible; absolutely don't understand how this place currently has 4 stars. We went for breakfast on a Saturday. We noticed that the table next to us had a problem with getting what they ordered, but didn't think much of it. Mistakes happen. We placed our order. After ordering, we waited perhaps 30-40 minutes for 2 omelettes. After a long wait, they brought out something totally different than what I had ordered. We told them what I had ordered and sent back the wrong entree. They proceeded to bring out ANOTHER wrong order. We corrected them again. They brought out the correct order, but the omelette was not cooked through (the whites of the eggs were runny), so I didn't end up eating it anyway. After all that, they still charged us for our full meal, including my disaster of an order. My husband got the correct thing, but it was very dry and not good. We definitely don't recommend this place. read more

Fresh, homemade food. All the food on the menu is made from scratch and with fresh ingredients. The whole wheat blueberry pancakes and original buttermilk pancakes are excellent. The Ruben and fries are made to order. The coffee is gourmet and not your standard packet of genetic coffee grounds. You can taste the difference. The staff is always there to re-fill your cup with fresh Joe and always greets you with a smile. The place is by far the cleanest diner I have ever been in. I will admit that I generally like diners. They're comfortable, the food is usually predictable and serviceable, and nobody minds if you sit and visit for a bit. Admittedly, these aren't difficult standards to meet, and there are any number of diners in and around Wethersfield that meet them. The Makris, however, is something special. The venerable diner found new life a couple of years ago when new management took over and revitalized the establishment. I think it starts with breakfast, which has come to be my favorite time to visit. ( In a prior life for me, and during a prior incarnation for the Makris, it used to be about 1:00 AM, but that's another story.) The Makris serves buttermilk, as well as the wheat pancakes familiar to those of us who used to frequent Moe's Midtown in Hartford's West End. The pancakes are as big as dinner platters and come in any number of varieties. Two of these hubcap size confections are more than enough to satisfy the bottomless pit otherwise known as my 8 year old son. The Hearty Makris, comprised of eggs, toast, home fries and options such as sausage or bacon, is devastatingly satisfying. My personal favorite is the Monte Christo, a combination of, among other things, french toast, ham, cheese and maple syrup. For those who pretend to follow healthier eating patterns, the oatmeal is homemade (be sure to ask for brown sugar and raisins), and the fruit plate varies from visit to visit, depending on what's in season and fresh. Through it all though, we have the coffee. It's the Makris's proprietary brand, in regular and dark roast, and it's something else. Served endlessly and far better than anything else on the 'Pike, it complements the food perfectly. As with any diner though, the real test is whether people come back because, after all, a diner doesn't work if people aren't comfortable. By that standard, the Makris is a rousing success. If you wander in on a regular basis - and you should if only to grab a cup of coffee to go - you will see the regulars settled in at the counter like Statler and Waldorf from the Muppet Show. Except these folks are smiling. The Makris is spotlessly clean. The owner is always on site to greet customers, serve food or bus tables. Don't be dissuaded if the parking out front is full. Take a moment to look around back where there is ample free parking, and where the handicapped ramp is located. read more

I went here for breakfast after seeing all the reviews and because it's just down the road. The food was good and came pretty fast, although it wasn't really busy while I was there. The portion was perfect for me, but at a diner you usually expect a huge platter of food especially for the price you pay here. It's not expensive but my standard for diners is open all hours of the day (which this is not), inexpensive, and lots of food for your late night cravings or your post-party breakfast. My common standard is the Vernon diner. I don't know how many times my friends and I drove out there from Storrs just to hang out and have cheese fries and eggs benedict. My other favorite diner is one in Liberty, NY which is the halfway point on my journey to my hometown. My boyfriend and I cannot finish the dinner platters (also because the platters include salad bar which is big and delicious there). There is enough food leftover for another meal and its less than $20 for us. I can't remember the name of the special but it was 3 eggs with cheddar and broccoli (which was cooked perfectly), toast, and homefries. It was like $8. The food was good and less greasy than your normal diner fare. The waitress I had was super nice. She was discussing specials and giving great recommendations to the two couples sitting behind me. Very sweet. I was happy overall, but after all the other breakfast places I've been to it falls in the middle. read more

This place is exactly the kind of diner that will have my loyalty for all of time. Vibe: The inside of the diner is so nice- it's clean but not overly lit or sterile feeling. The staff is always kind and casual. They treat all the new customers like regulars. There is always good music playing; I think a 'coffee house' type satellite station. Coffee: I have a fairly particular taste for coffee. Makris' is delicious. I gather it is their own blend, provided by Omar Coffee, which is also in Newington so double points for going hyper local. Food: SO good. Let's start with the pancakes. Any of the whole wheat varieties are heavenly, and I like whole wheat sparingly. The apple walnut are my favorite, my husband inhales the blueberry (I may help him). The home fries are above average, and I assume their other food is, too. Don't be fooled by the exterior this old school diner has some tasty food. Pierogies and potatoe pancakes were homemade, fresh and delicious. Omlettes are light and fluffy and not burnt like most diners. Prices are great. If you are in the area, stop by this nostalgic diner for some tasty cheap eats. read more

Pleased with the food. we tend to get the same 2-3 servers and they are good. Had a different girl once and she was HORRIBLE! Almost didn't come back she was that bad. Fantastic omelettes, amazingly fresh fruit and a friendly atmosphere! I visited early on a Saturday morning and felt that I had stepped back into my mother's kitchen and was surrounded by long lost relatives bantering about the old times. Dined for breakfast last week during the awful snow storm and was so very pleased with everything. The place is spotless, so clean and organized, while still obtaining the diner feel, which makes me very happy. Our waitress was so friendly and chipper even for the crummy weather we were having. The menu has a lot to choose from, but almost everything is served with eggs (which I only like once in a while, so this was my only complaint) and breakfast date doesn't eat eggs. I was not terribly hungry so I went with a cup of fresh fruit and home fries. Date went with pancakes, bacon, and home fries. We were both very satiated for under $20. The coffee was delicious and endless, she never let my mug get empty... Ended up about 4 mugs. It was a productive day after that. I have been here a few times and until today always enjoyed it, HOWEVER today the owner, who is also the server, got my order wrong, that happens I get it, but not only did she tell me I ordered the western omelet, when I said I didn't , she started to argue with me, I told her I've been a vegetarian since I was 9 years old and there is no way I ordered meat, and reminded her I asked to exchange the bell peppers with spinach did she take the plate and asked the cook to replace it. When I got the new dish my home fries were cold, I believe I got the same home fires that were already on the plate, disappointing, at least warm them up, and there was a small piece of meat, probably left from before It's unfortunate, I did like this place, but first, if you make a mistake don't argue with a returning customer, and second, what's up with the cold home fries with a small piece of meat for someone who just said they have been vegetarian for so long. read more

I must say, I really do not understand the negative comment about the Makris. I try to get there every weekend, because my kids love the place, and so do I. We have almost exclusively gone for breakfast, but I have had a few lunches there as well. No matter what meal I go for, I never leave feeling anything less than fully satisfied. Breakfast is our favorite. I have had everything from omelets to the Monte Cristo, and all have been fabulous. My oldest always gets chocolate chip wheat pancakes, and is never disappointed. My youngest has various food allergies, and the folks at the Makris have always either cooked her something special, or cooked the special waffles or oatmeal I bring myself. No other diner or restaurant has done this for us, and it really shows what a special place the Makris is. In addition to the great food and wonderful, personal attention we are paid while dining at the Makris, I have to comment on the atmosphere. Unlike certain other diners or restaurants in the area (the Olympia and the rebuilt McDonald's come immediately to mind), the Makris actually looks and feels genuine- probably because it is. The Makris is clean and fittingly updated, but remains an old-school diner without the fake, over-the-top "nostalgia" of those other places. From the shining diner car exterior to the single-table juke boxes, the Makris oozes small town diner charm. Unlike the Olympia, which tries really hard but just can't pull off the genuine atmosphere and incredible food, the Makris does so with ease. Basically, your choice is to visit the Olympia once and leave wanting, or visit the Makris and feel as if you never want to leave. read more

On each of my two visits, there was just one person to handle the front of the restaurant -- a capable enough and personable waiter who was as attentive as his divided time allowed (not bad) the first time and a wonderful waitress who cheerfully greeted everyone as they arrived and thanked everyone as they left. She was more than sufficient all by herself -- one of those rare people who can handle a lot with grace and pleasantness to spare. The diner is clean and attractive and the breakfasts were pretty good -- marred only by the use of that yellow gunk that diners seem to prefer over butter or margarine for their homefries -- a shame since the potatoes were well seasoned and would have been delicious if olive oil (preferably from a taste standpoint) or butter had been used on the grill instead. I found the two breakfasts I took there (eggs benedict the first time and two eggs over with sausage the second) to be satisfactory and the experiences calm and pleasant. (If one could count on catching the waitress on duty, I'd up the stars to 4 1/2. Her PLUS an upgrade from the yellow gunk for the grease provider and I might even go to 5. But, alas, I suspect that the yellow gunk is there to stay.) read more

I loved this diner the first time I went there for lunch with my daughter 7 years ago. The first thing I noticed was how very friendly everyone was. I thought they had us confused with someone else. The food was excellent and the coffee was out of this world!. Since then I have been coming to this diner at least a couple of times a week. They spend more time and effort to cook the meals using the best oils. When I order poached eggs they are done exactly as I requested and they are simply the best ever. You will be hard pressed to find a more friendly owner and group of waitresses. I highly recommend this diner. It is definitely a must to stop in and see for yourself read more

Enjoyed a tasty and quick breakfast here yesterday. We were sat immediately (yay!). The booth we were sat at was clean and or server came by right away to take our drink orders. Total wait time for food was maybe 7 mins, that's awesome since there was a full house. The food was yummy, I had scrambled eggs w/cheese and bacon on the side and also wheat toast. My husband had eggs over-medium with sausage and rye toast. Diced potatoes were also served with each meal. My eggs were awesome but my bacon was ok. Not the thick like I like. I had a bite of the sausage and it was yummy. Overall I would recommend this place for a tasty and quick breakfast. Total time spent from start to finish 35 min. read more

The place was only half full when we arrived so we sat immediately. We placed our order pretty quickly too... Then waited 45 minutes for our food. And yes we times it because it always takes forever for breakfast so we like to see how long it actually takes. When the food finally came we were both extremely disappointed. I ordered the huevos rancheros. There was about a pound of dirty rice on two dried out flour tortillas, two ice cream sized scoops of refried beans and some scrambled eggs. I literally had to scrape the pile of rice out of the way to get to anything else. My wife order strawberry buttermilk pancakes to try and they were so sugary sweet I couldn't eat them. She had kielbasa which she liked and eggs over easy with rye toast. The eggs were cooked perfectly. We probably won't be back. read more

My spouse has lived in Poland and I have eaten a lot of Polish food in Brooklyn but this is the cleanest, in ungreasiest, homemade version ever. Just order from the specials board. I LOVE diners, and visit lots of them. This is a top-notch diner, just three miles from Trinity College in Hartford. My daughter had the potato pancakes, served with applesauce and sour cream, and I have to say, I couldn't have made them better myself! The chicken soup with shells was comforting and home made, the half tuna melt grinder was enormous and nicely done, and the chef's salad artfully prepared. Everything was fresh and delicious, the server was sweet and friendly as can be, and the 1951 diner itself is immaculate and perfectly maintained. They make their pies in-house, so we will have to go back to try them. Kudos to the owners, who truly understand the ideal diner experience. read more
