Our "crew" showed up at 3 and got to work immediately. We had a lot of larger furniture pieces as well as some other item like lamps and a lot of chairs. Each glass tops from the dressers and tables were wrapped up very tightly. Beds, tables, dressers everything completely wrapped. They were all working very quickly. Our furniture was in the trucks by 4;45. I was completely amazed. They were very neat and careful with everything. I was very pleased with the whole crew, joking laughing and working well together. MakeSpace is a great concept that is a total disaster as currently managed and run. We stored some 56 bins with them in May as well as 9 pieces of furniture and some wardrobe boxes during our condo remodel. When we asked for all the furniture to be returned in early July they couldn't find any of it! I scrambled around and found photos of most of the pieces figuring if they found one piece they would find them all together. Wrong! Evidently, they don't store your items together. They initially did find three pieces and delivered them. Later in July I asked them to return all the bins and boxes. They showed up with the 56 bins and all the missing furniture. Great except the dining table and another drop leaf table were completely destroyed!! Then I discovered one of the bins which contained books and photographs was water damaged, presumably from a roof leak. I submitted estimates, photos and quotes for all the damaged materials as instructed by Nelson in NY. (When you call them, you don't speak to anyone in Chicago. All the customer service is done out of NY so they then have to relay any messages, photos etc to Chicago. Talk about inefficient.) Despite being assured that their claims department was working on this, I still have heard nothing from anyone after beginning this process in July. I see I am not alone in having major items lost and/or destroyed. Repeated calls to their 800 number go to voice mail. Requests for Sam Rosen, the founder to call me also go unanswered. The venture capitalists bankrolling this firm need to take a good hard look at their investment. The concept is great but it is apparently run by incompetents! read more

Okay here's the real truth about Makespace Chicago. I've noticed that quite a number of bad reviews here revolve around the return of items. There's a perfectly good reason for this. Unbeknownst to the unsuspecting costumer. They are lead to believe that their belongings are being stored in an actually storage space. This is not the case. Customer's items are stored at a warehouse on skids. And if need be, your items can possibly be placed on a skid with other customers. Not only creating the potentiality of items being damaged from being moved around a lot, but you also run the risk of your items being lost or possibly misplaced somehow. read more

I do not recommend. They quote you one thing and charge you another. I had several items damaged and driver told me to make a claim, and they refused the claims. One piece was quite expensive. Spend the money on real professional movers who care about your belongings. read more

First off -- big round of applause to Nat and Marques (not sure of the spelling). They were fantastic in getting in, wrapping all the furniture to protect it, and moving it down the elevator to their waiting trunk . This company could not ask for 2 more hard-working, polite and conscientious employees. You should do everything in your power to keep them because they made your review go from a 4 star to a 5 star. Second -- when it comes to doing the moving -- these guys could outshine any other movers I have ever used (and there have been several). The care they take in making sure all your belongings are protected is fantastic. The added bonus of supplying bins for you to pack your stuff in (thereby avoiding buying moving boxes) is a valuable benefit. Third -- the price is the best of anyone's. They not only come in and move your belongings (just like professional movers...only better) but then they store your belongings for however long you need it (you'll pay for a 3 month min. however) and will deliver all your belongings back to you for the super low price of $19.99. In the past, we have paid almost $700 to move a studio apartment from one side of the city to the other....these guys will do it for the cost of the storage (basically) which is so unbelievably reasonable that it makes no sense to have separate (professional) movers and then pay a storage place to store your stuff...and then pay for movers again to move you where ever you end up. You'll be paying at least double what this company charges. Couple of notes: (1) the first hour to move you is free...after that, there is a nominal charge that is broken down into 15 min increments. Very fair...and they don't drag it out...they come in...they work hard...they move you out without taking a break. (2) As in everything, things can go wrong and don't come off exactly as you planned...this company wants you to be a satisfied customer and will go the extra mile to make sure that you have been compensated, if, as in our case, we ran into a glitch, they came through and made a fair and reasonable offer to compensate us for our inconvenience. (3) If you live in a high-rise building where you have to reserve elevator time -- make sure that you let them know this AND that you call the day before to remind them of this very narrow window you may have to use the elevator....not a big deal if you are on the 3rd floor...very big deal if you are on the 27th floor. They say they are giving you a "window" when they give you a 2 hour time frame....you want to make sure that you are given priority over another customer who doesn't have a strict elevator time schedule to follow. This review is long overdue. I absolutely loved this service!!!! Had to store a bunch of stuff to stage my condo to sell. I knew if I had to rent a truck, load and unload into a unit myself it never would have happened. Especially knowing that at some point I would have to do it all over again to bring it to our new place. FORGET IT! These guys made it such a breeze. I loved having the big green bins to store my things safely and without having to buy moving boxes. And when they showed up to pick up my stuff, they wrapped everything that was breakable so well. When it all came back, nothing was broken and some things were wrapped up even better than when they originally picked it up. They are fast, efficient, and take care in what they do. I also appreciate how friendly they were. Rick, Henry, and Craig are like a bunch of buddies that you'd want to invite to your summer bbq. If ever the need arises, I would 100% use them again. I would usually save a buck and self-store my items, but after shopping around, I found that MakeSpace not only saves me money, but they provide the containers and "walk-in closet" boxes at no extra charge. If your belongings are packed in their containers, they are insured. Not only is it great for you, but great for the environment. The app is so convenient. Best part is - they pick-up and deliver your items at your convenience based on the appointments that you schedule. The staff is always professional, timely, and makes sure that you're taken care of. Other than packing or disassembling your things, you don't have to lift a finger. was given a 1 year service as a Christmas gift. Crates were dropped off and collected within the time window allocated. Joe and Adam were fast, professional, and very friendly. The overall experience was swift and painless. All you need to do is pack the crates, and they do the hard part of transporting and storing. They are the pits. They show up on time to pick up and return items however, if they damage your stuff they take forever to respond to claims and to pay out. They want your credit card number to make sure they get paid on time however, when it's time to pay the customer the tell you with in 10 days and you wait more than a month. I've called repeatedly and I can't get an answer. You can store stuff you don't care about but if you have decent items handle it yourself. read more

So far, I'd say I'm more like 3.5 starts. I'm staging my house to sell so this co. offers a lot of great and so far, reliable service. I have had 1 pick up. They were up front about all the fees etc. 1-The empty bins were delivered --- most of them were dirty and dusty. I am very allergic to dust and have asthma so I try not to deal with heavy dust myself. 2- I asked them NOT to open my boxes and take pictures. They did -- not additional cost but I didnt want my stuff re-opened and tossed about. Luckily I have nothing of value. I didn't care to request this service since my stuff will be stored for maybe a year and I will not be needing things back. 3-The pick up crew was early and efficient -- which is good -- but unfriendly. I tipped them well anyway because they worked hard to get out of my house and did great time. And I had bulky wood furniture to haul. But still. A smile for customer service would go a long way, fellas. You are coming in to my home.... don't be rude. 4-Tip. Either slap a MakeSpace sign on the Ryder truck so we know who you are or give your movers MakeSpace coats. I couldnt see their T-shirts, and since they were HOURS early, i had no idea who they were or why they were staring into my house from the street. Horrible experience, beyond awful, not to mention frustrating with terrible customer service.Avoid this company at all costs! My boyfriend and i put our stuff in store when he moved in this May. In July, he called to have all our belongings delivered to his new place, but several items were missing. Despite the items being barcoded, they could not locate the missing items, which included a table, a nightstand, storage bin, and possibly other items we may have forgotten about. After numerous phone calls to the customer service that got us nowhere, I had to walk over to the Make Space warehouse near my apartment to ask that we take a look inside their storage warehouse to see if I could locate the missing items, as clearly they could not. Instead I was connected with the manager Corey, who gave me his cell phone number stating he would "get right on it." After waiting a week for a follow-up call, I called back asking if any progress had been made in locating the missing items. Same response stating he would take care of it "right away." Weeks pass, I make several follow up calls and text him a description of missing items. If these items are bar-coded, why should it matter? About a month later, they find my boyfriends nightstand, but insist that my kitchen table was delivered in July, which it was not. My black bin of personal items...gone. After multiple phone calls to Corey and Noah, I'm told I can file a claim for my missing items, if I can provide receipts for their purchase price. The table was a gift from years ago, the black bin full of personal items...well, can't really put a price on it. On multiple occasions, both Corey and Noah told me that they have a warehouse of "1000's of items" which is no excuse for not finding items after several months...that are supposedly bar coded for easy location in their warehouse. Why weren't they stored with our other items that were delivered together? After multiple phone calls to Corey and Noah that went unreturned, I called the corporate office to file a complaint and they agree to credit my boyfriend's credit card for a few charges similar to the cost estimated for my lost items. Only decent thing they did. Any my table and bin full of personal items? Still sitting in their warehouse full of "1000s of items", somewhere. Or as we hypothesized, delivered to an incorrect address who never reported the incorrect items. If you value your stuff at all, DO NOT use MakeSpace. Just rent your own storage space, get a U-Haul and do it yourself. read more

Warning. Do not use this company. I needed to store my things when my lease rental was up. Was looking to buy. Thought the 3 month minimum was perfect. They picked everything up. It was great. I got the bill. $20 more than they quoted. Whatever. I was happy with how it started and it was easy. Until I asked for my stuff back. They first didn't bring all my things. Finally found most of it. Delivered what they did find a couple days later. Was promised I wouldn't be charged for the second delivery because it was their fault (It's $20 every time you ask them to deliver something). Meanwhile. They lost the seat cushions to half of my sectional making it pretty much useless (a $1000 couch) and denting my dining room table so bad that the leg was bent in and glass wouldn't lay right. After a MONTH of back and forth I'm getting $500 back. That won't even cover a new couch. And they tried to charge me for that second delivery (well they did charge and I had to call and argue to credit me). I looked up some reviews before I signed up and saw some good and some bad. Really wish I would have gone with my gut. Terrible experience. I would pay to actually not have to experience that again. So I'm here to warn you. Also. I never write yelp reviews and this experience was so damn awful I felt compelled to. Save yourself the grief. They got one star because I couldn't give negative stars. read more

I hired makespace to put items into storage for a client. The first pick up was nice and the workers were friendly and adaptable. The second pick up (just before the move) was worse. The scheduled me (over the phone) on a day when the place was closed. They called me on the day of to let me know. They were able to get guys to come in on they're day off, but they took forever. They also didn't inform me that the 3 month minimum that they were charging me would renew and I would have to pay for an additional 3 months along with a penalty fee for doing so before my 3 months were up. I just saw charges to my bank account after all of my stuff was out of storage already. I called and that's when they explained it to me along with and "it sucks to be you" attitude. Also, during unpacking, my clients found that several items were broken. Makespace told me that anything marked as fragile will not be compensated for if broken. I was excited about this company to start out with and their movers seemed like good guys. But whoever is running this business is pretty awful and I will never use them again. read more
