I've gotten the basic rolls but haven't had the urge to go off the beaten path yet and try something new. I really have to trust the place before that happens. This place is one of best places and we come here whenever we are in town and so sad we have moved so far away because this was our date night spot. I have to say, I eat a lot of sushi. This isn't one of my top choices. I feel like this spot is a little Americanize. The sushi and rolls flavors aren't too crazy. The portions here, I have to say is very, very BIG! lol, not a bad thing. The prices on the sushi makes sense because of the portion they give you. My boyfriend really loves all the cucumber wrap rolls here, which is the reason why can came here. A lot of other sushi spot doesn't do this so much. We had the Honeymoon Roll $13, O'yshi Roll $13, Superman Burrito $13, and Sashimi B with 12-pieces $20. Honeymoon Roll was tastier than the O'yshi Roll. All were fresh, which is a good thing. Superman Burrito was definitely a super size roll! LOL, it was a little weird to see it that big, which that would explain the term "burrito" in the name. The Sashimi B with 12 pieces, I have to say were really big and thick. I just had some dental work done so I have to cut the sashimi in half. 2 stars for great past dine ins and togo. Got a snow cone row and a pink lady roll today. Snow cone roll was extremely small. Pink lady was a good size but paper think fish. I'll just go to taiko next time. Little things matter when it comes to keeping customers. Just keep that in mind. read more

This is one of those places where.. The food isn't particularly amazing, but you seem to find yourself coming back time and again. Maizuru is in a small strip mall on Alton and Jeffrey and there are a good variety of restaurants nearby. My friends and I always come here ONLY during their happy hour. Their rolls aren't particularly cheap, as they range from ~11-15 dollars. I wouldn't mind paying money for good sushi, but really the fish just isn't that amazing. They do however, have really cool specialty rolls that I randomly crave. Some of my favorites include- the energy roll (shrimp tempura and spicy tuna on the inside and salmon on top), the garlic albacore roll (fried garlic with seared albacore tuna on top), and the snow cone roll (baked "lobster", crab, and albacore tuna on top). I seriously feel like these are the only rolls I ever get here because none of the other things I've tried are good. Good place to go to for a quick sushi fix and the whole happy hour buy 1 get 1 half off really makes the price of their rolls a lot more reasonable! read more

Maizuru is an all-around good sushi bar, sporting great tasting fish and a relaxing dining environment. In addition to the savory sushi entrees, I really enjoy its minimal, but thematically appropriate decor, especially the large Japanese mural, and seemingly regular influx of cute girls. The Happy Hour specials are also decent. On a personal note, I really came to Maizuru hoping to experience to something new. It was a surprise to me when I found out that Maizuru is actually run by the same company as Niko Niko Sushi (they even had the "Niko Niko Sushi" name on their plates). If you've read my other reviews, you'll know that not all Nikos are the same quality, but Maizuru is definitely one of the better ones. However, we had to stand up front and wait for someone to greet us for way too long, but when someone finally came to seat us, it was a nice dining experience from there on out. I was on-the-fence about 3 or 4 stars. I got a dinner bento box with California and spicy tuna rolls as my choices. The entire array of soup, salad, rice and rolls was good, not great. What bumped my rating to 4 was the service. Everyone was kind and the sushi chef even gave us edamame on the house! Our meals were prepared quickly, too. I did note that prices are a little on the expensive side. I'm a big fan of bento boxes - they're my go-to for most Japanese restaurants. I think a fair price is $14-15, but Maizuru charges $18 for dinner. read more

The hamachi was not what they looked like on the yelp picture. Didn't tastes fresh at all. The salmon belly was better, but not sure if that's was worth $10. The restaurant was completely full by 12:30p and we saw some pretty lunch bento boxes and the stir fried noodle on hot plate was gigantic, likely can feed 2, if not 3, people. Their service was amazing. They checked on us every ten minutes to refill our drinks. Their hungry roll was big and savory. I couldn't fit it in one bite because it was so big. It was meaty and the eel was good. On the other hand, the Pocorn something roll (sorry I forgot the name) looked so beautiful and it was really filling for just a sushi roll. I've been coming to this Restaurant when I come visit my sister in Irvine. It was on a Christmas Day and pretty busy at dinner time. We got to seat pretty quick and ordered crunch roll, salmon teriyaki, aloha roll, a couple hand rolls, and beef bowl. Everything was very fresh and cooked well. Not overly sweet or salty like other Japanese restaurant. All the sushi chefs were very friendly and welcoming every customers and the servers were very knowledgeable and great service as well. Low quality fish drenched in sauce. I ordered the chef sashimi special expecting good quality sashimi in its simplest and best form. Chef special sashimi is just sashimi over spring mix and drenched in a ponzu like sauce, probably to cover up the low quality. For the price there are many better options. read more

Two out of our party of 3 got sick on something we ate there today. One of the people in my party has thrown up twice since we ate there at 2pm. Called to let them know and was told that if anyone else called to tell them they got sick from their food today that they'd call us back. I've been a customer of theirs at least 15 years or more. I've never had a single complaint for them. Getting sick from their food and being ignored by the owner is not a good business policy, especially now that their portions have gotten smaller and their prices have gone up. Boyfriend wanted a sushi buffet, but since we were already here we decided to stay. Edamame came complimentary and we sat at the bar. The sushi chef seemed a little stern when we first showed up but he definitely made our experience here. The sushi was great, a bit overpriced, but it was worth it. The chef entertained us the whole time after that, asking for our names and telling us jokes. He even gave us and the guy sitting next to us a complimentary sushi plate of his own creation.
