I need to start out this review by saying the food was fantastic. Although the dishes are smaller portions at a very high price, knowing the ingredients are farm to table and the best quality I could look past the cost. My issue and the reason for two stars comes down to the experience my partner and I had. We entered a completely empty restaurant and sat at a two person table near the window. The waitress came over and we thought she was very friendly while she explained the menu to us--even said we had a great seat next to the window. Awesome. Then we went to order. Having decided on each of the dishes we wanted, we then were confronted with an argumentative waitress who said those dishes were best shared and kept insisting on telling us dishes we should order and share together. Despite trying to say one of us was vegetarian and we had preferred what we originally wanted, we weren't going anywhere talking to our waitress and finally ordered three dishes to split. Five minutes later, she sat another couple down at the bar table up against the window telling them they had a great seat--which was right on top of us. There was no space for either of us at all. My arm and shoulder was touching the woman next to me.. the restaurant was still completely empty at this time. The other couple and both of us were very uncomfortable and we ended up having to get up, move all our plates and glasses ect. to another table. Though the food was amazing, I'm extremely disappointed from this experience and I will not be returning. It was hard to enjoy eating something I originally did not want, and having to move from the seats we choose at the beginning, w are so turned off that I would not recommend this place. read more

WOW is really the only word to describe my meal at Maite. I've lived in Bushwick for about 3 years now and Maite has always been on my radar, but I wish I would have gone sooner. I went with my partner and parents for a birthday celebration when they were in town visiting. Everyone at the table agreed that it was one of the best meals we've ever had in NYC. We ordered the sea bass with greens, pork belly with chicharron, the steak, empanaditas, gnocchi, and olives. The table's favorite was definitely the sea bass. My father mentioned that it was going to be hard to enjoy another fish dish after that one - it was LIFE CHANGING. I personally enjoyed the pork belly the most. The contrast in textures of the fatty pork belly and cripsy skin was unreal and so so so sooooo delicious and flavorful. The gnocchi was my second favorite, it literally melted in your mouth. I like that Maite doesn't have a set menu. Their food is always so fresh so they keep a chalk board of the current menu up to choose from. I've told all of my friends that we definitely need to make it back here ASAP. I can't wait! read more

What a hidden gem in Bushwick! I've been living in the neighborhood for about 2.5 years and passed by this place all the time, only recently popping in for dinner. All I can say is WOW - I've been missing out. Four of us shared a few dishes and nothing was short of phenomenal. - Butter lettuce salad: something light to start, I believe it had a few mint leaves mixed in as well which made the salad very refreshing - Fried gnocchi: these were little balls of steamy, cheesy happiness. Not sure I expected the texture to be so airy, but these were great. Very hot though, so as tempting as it may be to just pop them in your mouth, I would recommend cutting them in half to allow the insides to cool - Empanadas: AH-MAY-ZING!!! We got several orders of these because they were that good. The night we went, I believe the offering was beef and potato and these were heavenly. I'd come back here just to inhale an order of the empanadas alone! Served with a jalapeno relish that was actually wonderfully spicy (without being overly so) - I think this dish is a must order and really made our meal - Mafaldine: fun squiggly noodles topped with a braised duck tomato sauce. This was so good! The duck was cooked to perfection and the tomato sauce was just hearty enough - Shrimp with Spanish rice: I expected this honestly to be more like a paella so when our server described it to us as a cheesy dish, I was intrigued. We decided to order this to share amongst ourselves and I'm so glad we did! Super cheesy, almost risotto-like dish that was packed with flavor. Generous portion of shrimp We also tried some sort of fruity margarita (I want to say maybe it was watermelon, but my mind is blanking) which helped tie the meal together. I came here for dinner the other night - great vibe, variance of food quality. I shared orders of bread, pork belly, lamb chop, and empanaditas. Empanaditas: very good! The meat inside was delicious! Pork belly: pretty good, but SO overpriced for the quantity. Lamb chop: not the best, in my opinion, but my partner seemed to like it. Also overpriced. Bread: the bread was actually super good, especially with their special butter spread over. With that said, we ordered about $50 of food, but left still slightly hungry. Very nice vibes and very nice service but the food and prices were way off. Burgers were 23 bucks and didn't come with any sides. Side of fries were not huge and cost 11 dollars. It looks like the pork belly used to be served by itself, but they decided a small arepa as a side. First of all, I grew up eating crispy pork belly and eat very salty. The pork belly at Maite is about 65-70% fat. It's served with crispy skin which I love, but it's veryyyyyy saltyyyyyyyy. The arepa is just as salty. I had to warm up some rice to finish the dish. I actually ate the arepas with rice bc it's too salty to eat by itself and can't be eaten with the saltier pork belly. Trust me, I eat very salty and always enjoy adding salt to my food. I don't know if it's their off day bc it's my first time getting food from them. A small arepas and a big chunk of pork belly. Not sure if they're trying to make a point that the salted pork belly is not pricey. I felt I like I drank a gallon of sea water after finishing the meal. I want to support small, independently owned restaurants during this difficult time, so I'll try something else next time. read more

It is easy to taste the quality of ingredients and skilled craft in their food. The pork belly is shatteringly crisp; paired with the aji it's basically a drug. The gnocchi is a must, especially if it's with mushrooms. The menu constantly changes but never fails to satisfy. The wine list is excellent and the staff will guide you to the right selection if you're unsure what to pick. My most recent visit was for my boyfriend's birthday. I really wanted to enjoy this place after reading the reviews, one person even mentioned in their review that this was the best burger they've ever had! Top 1 or 2 in their whole life! Whoa! Anyway, so the restaurant doesn't print menu's apparently, which is a kinda cool kitschy idea since it's also better for the environment? anyway I typically would have been fine with this except where we were seated I had to stand up and face the other way in order to read the full menu, also our seats were far from the bar so I had to get up and walk over to the bar to see the full drink menu which was posted on the wall on a chalkboard as well... Staff was nice. I had the pork belly to start which was DELICIOUS, the only downside is that about half of the cut they served me was pure fat, still, the parts that were not fat were very yummy. My partner had the gnocchi which was pretty pricey in comparison to other menu items (go figure). She said it was ok - nothing amazing, but the peas in the dish were what tasted best she said. I ordered the burger which everyone was raving about. The burger comes with a soft boiled egg on top, which I knew about however, I guess I didn't realize how big the egg was going to be in contrast to the burger and bun and personally I felt It was hard to manage in a sandwich setting. I had to cut the egg in half for it to stay inside, which was annoying, also it was a really messy burger (I personally like burgers that are easy to handle and stay intact when eating) Unfortunately the bread was thin and already soggy from the beef patty, so when I cut the egg, the whole thing just kinda fell apart midway through. All that being said, the beef just didn't taste great to me, wayyyyy to much salt and spices were added to this meat, good beef doesn't need to be overly seasoned, the seasoning should compliment it. I guess overall i just wasn't impressed post Yelp review hype on this one. I honestly wouldn't even put this burger in the top 50 burgers I've had in my life. Bartender made me the Maite cocktail which was a passion fruit, aguardiente, martini kinda thing - it was ok. I rarely write reviews these days however I just had to post about this burger because I feel its being misrepresented. Also, the rib eye was priced at $55 in person vs online menu listing as $38... $38 dollars would have been semi-reasonable but as a person who knows and loves steak, I'd think twice about ordering the rib eye here for $55, which is what they cost at a high end steakhouses and I'd be willing to bet that you wont be getting anything near that caliber a steak dish (but after that burger, I'd probably think twice about ordering it for $38 too) end read more

Had two dishes - the duck egg arepa and the carrots with anchovy butter - that sounded delicious on paper but were swimming in butter - as if richness was the answer. The arepa itself was very good. The roasted carrots had a caramelized appeal. But both drowned in a butter swimming pool. Pappardelle with brisket was ok not great. Hamburger had something weird going on. We have been to this place several times.. this time we ordered a burger medium well and in the background I can hear the chef, bartender and server basically making fun of us on how medium well does not exist and should not be ordered. I approached them and asked if there was a problem. The server was nice and said no but I can tell she was covering up for the asshole chef and the bartender was just riding the chef. In short, the food was ok. A bit salty.. but nothing special. Dont compromise the dining experience by being a dick thinking you know it all. I will not be going back to this place. read more

Worst meal in a while. The saddest part is the menu had all the right ingredients, ruined with terrible execution. The Empanaditas , the highlight, were like cutting through a shingle. The chard was greasy and salty. The hamburger was a hockey puck served on a dollar store roll, and the fries were soggy on the top and undercooked on the bottom. This spot was just fine. Not bad, not great. We checked this place out with another couple and opted to order multiple plates to share, which is definitely the right move based on the dish sizes and style of cooking. We had one vegetarian (me) and one person with celiacs (like legitimately can't eat gluten or will be hospitalized) and the server was very helpful in identifying things that we could eat/share. Though, I'd say this is absolutely not a vegetarian friendly place. Unless you don't need to eat too much. Which, let's be honest, I do. We ordered the olives (ok), Duck Egg (ok), cheddar & sunchoke (good), carrots w/ roe (good), gnocchi (ok), mushrooms (meh), an arepa (very good) and monkfish (good). Oh, and bread which we had to ask for three times before they remembered (good). Nothing was great, or a home run. I probably wouldn't eat dinner here again (just based on my personal preferences and needing more vegetarian options), but the service was friendly and the ambiance was very nice. I'd go back for a small bite and cocktail though! And I do appreciate having a restaurant that's unique to everything else in the area (Columbian-European). read more

I don't get this place. U walk in and sit down, then they tell you there are no menus because it changes daily so you have to look at a chalkboard across the room to see the items (super annoying when you're a table of 7). The menu is also hard to distinguish which items are which and what is included in them. They said its Eco friendly and laziness but it feels more like the latter bcuz it's very annoying as a customer to not have a menu. Server was a very nice dude. It was very hot, the AC was not on point I was breaking a sweat most of the meal and my friends were complaining. The prices were alarmingly high for bushwick. I got $18 gnocchi which included 9 gnocchi. That's $2 for a ball of average very average gnocchi (#math). Also not enough food for a hungry person. I told the waiter about all this, not that I expected anything to happen it's just kind of the DNA of the establishment I guess, but he told me the prices were high because of fresh local ingredients and didn't discuss why the portions were not sufficient (I shudder to think what the appetizers are like..) Also no response for why it's so hot in here for a "nice" restaurant. He brought us desserts (aka a singular chocolate truffle for each person) and then told us they can only take 4 cards to split bill (which was fine but kind of annoying that they wouldn't accommodate if it were). Anyway, clearly never coming back but not terrible place if money isn't a problem and you don't mind an establishment that feels very opportunitstic and corner cutting. I say go to an authentic restaurant in the neighborhood for a better meal instead of amplifying the gentrification train at new hipster places filled with people who look and act like u.
