Thank you Fort Greene, you've done it again...ANOTHER great brunch spot in Ici! This quaint little eatery makes you feel like you're in a small french cafe, the decor is country and sweet. The waitstaff was attentive and pleasant. For food we had the assorted breads basket, get this! if you see there display of croissants, muffins, and breads and want to eat them all, then this is your basket. The coffee was dark and delicious, and just kept being refilled, which is always appreciated. The omelet was tasty and fantastic, light and flavorful, I would recommend it. Great local, fresh food with an interesting wine list. Had dinner with some girlfriends after seeing a show at BAM and was pleasantly surprised by the roasted chicken (flavorful, well-cooked) and grits. Everything our table had was prepared so as to bring out the natural flavors of each item, not cover them up with some heavy sauce or spice. Service was mediocre, but the ambiance is charming and minimalist, and there's no rush to get patrons to leave for the next customer. There are plenty of dining choices in Fort Greene, but I must say that iCi is among the very best. I took my in-laws to iCi this past weekend. Saturday nights there are pretty packed and loud, which I suppose is a testament to its goodness and popularity, but, if you're looking for something more intimate, I suggest going at another time. Our server was extremely knowledgeable and attentive throughout the meal. My mother-in-law and I both ordered the $27 prix fixe, she with the sweet potato soup, butternut squash risotto and apple tart tartine, and me with the arugula salad with radish shaving, lamb with pappardelle, and apple tart. My father-in-law ordered the surf n' turf, with beef tenderloin and scallops. When I tell you that all conversation ceased the minute we began eating, I would not be lying! The food was just that good, and warranted every inch of our attention. Everything was artfully prepared, the portions were perfect, each mouthful was just bursting with flavor. And the fact that they source locally made the food all the more enjoyable. I don't want to sound crass, but the apple tart, with its perfect buttered crust, honestly made me want to touch myself, an inappropriate thought to share with the in-laws, but exactly how I felt, which is why I'm sharing here. Such a sweet little place for brunch or a romantic dinner. I have a soft spot for this place because when you walk in, you feel like you're in someone's home (cause essentially you are). The space is really nice (including the outdoor area)and the food is great but I'm giving it three stars for the following reasons: 1- the bathroom is not kept clean and there's only one for a large restaurant 2- you cant substitute anything in the menu (so if you cant/dont eat cheese you cant sub a vegi in your omelet which seems silly) 3- while the food itself is tasty, the portions are pretty small (including the coffee!) 4- they were out of half there baked goods when we went, so the breakfast basket was pretty sparse 5- service is pretty slow (although it was pretty packed) read more

I don't know how to put into words how spectacular Maison May is. This is a beautiful, unique gem of a space for an event. Our October wedding here was beyond my wildest dreams. Quaint, intimate and beautiful. The photographs were gorgeous. What's more - the food - out of this world. My guests wouldn't stop raving and neither could I. The food at ici is absolutely superb! I was there a few weeks ago with my family and we ended up having almost everything on the menu. I highly recommend the charcuterie plate, whipped bacalao, chicken pot pie, lamb shank, and the apple cider panna cotta..... really everything is fantastic. Seasoning is spot on and flavors have a depth and complexity that isn't often found at such reasonable prices. Service is wonderful - warm, friendly and really knowledgeable about the menu. Usually when it comes to dining out, I am the one picking and searching out exciting places to eat. This go around, my beau did the choosing. I told him "Surprise me!" and he did... but in the best way possible. This charming little spot is among a handful restaurants that are scattered up and down Dekalb Avenue and what sets this place apart is it comes off very clean, bright, and just romantic enough. There are two floors: the first floor is a small dining room with white brick walls, a marble fireplace, and hardwood floors and there is an outdoor dining area (which we couldn't sit in due to swarms of mosquitoes, not any body's fault). The second floor is a private dining area that could host up to 40 people for an intimate celebration dinner. Our drinks were delicious, strong, and just what we wanted. I ordered the Sage & Pear which was just sweet enough but completely refreshing. So nice I drank it twice! Our first course was a sampling of three cheeses: brie, manchego, and the other a slightly nutty semi-soft cheese (name escapes me). The cheeses were served with a peach chutney, honey, and roasted pistachios. The accompaniments were perfect for each cheese but my favorite was the manchego with honey combination. This hard, salty Spanish cheese paired very well with the sticky sweetness that is honey. Our next dish was vegetable tempura: a selection of eggplant, green tomato, mushrooms, and fennel served with a sesame dipping sauce. Very yummy and just naughty enough when the focus of the joint is fresh & local produce. Our final dish was pan seared sea scallops served with fresh vegetables. This was incredible. The grape tomatoes and zucchini paired so well with the buttery sweet and very fresh scallops. I could eat this dish every day. Service was lovely, very inviting, charming, and definitely added to the appeal of this quaint spot in Fort Greene. We will be back... for their brunch! read more

I love this place. I often come out satisfied and in awe of the meals they put together that awaken every part of the taste-buds. You never walk out wobbly or weighted down. The meals are fresh, innovative, and healthy. The owner is super sweet. However, the last time I was there, the waitress wasn't that good. It's unfair to have such incompetence in such a great restaurant. Had I been a new customer I would've been turned off by the waitress. It was a disappointing meal for my Valentine 09. I was still hungry after I finished the meal. The appetizer was the size of my thumb. There was only one lonesome ravioli in my porcini broth. One ravioli to share? It was Valentines day! (it really should have been raviolo) The main course was skate wing and collard green that was half the size of the normal portion. (This is my usual order at this restaurant) It could have been supported by a humble potato. The desert looked like they scrap off somebody else plate. This is a beautiful little restaurant with friendly staff and delicious food. I have always enjoyed this place, but was on the fence considering the food is on the pricier side, but now am a card carrying fan after I learned how passionate they are about local food(duh, didn't notice that is what the name referred to) A fair amount of their produce comes from a small farm in Red Hook, yes, like Brooklyn. You may have noticed it across the street from Ikea. This amazing little farm started about a decade ago from NYC compost and Bronx Zoo manure, yes like rhino and tigers and bears, has 6 restaurant contracts and among them, ICI. This to me is reason enough to check it out, but the delicious food and beautiful design just tips me right over the edge to a 5 star rating. read more

It's worth the wait! Yes, you may have to wait a little longer than is comfortable for your food but it is definitely worth it. And despite the wait, the staff is extremely attentive. They really care about you enjoying your dinner. My boyfriend and I go here about once a week with the expectation of having a lengthy romantic dinner. The food is extremely fresh! And they change their menu bi-monthly. The recipes are unique and very tasty. I most recently had the rabbit pot pie and it is to die for. So go...order a bottle of wine and a couple of appetizers while you wait in the romantic, modern, low lit atmosphere for your delicious dinner. I recommend getting the marinated olives with the cheese plate. If you like good food you won't regret it. read more

Just like the tagline says: "Fresh, Local, Seasonal". Went there for Dine-in Brooklyn 2011, $25 prix-fixe. For starters my husband and I enjoyed white turnip soup and a salad of bitter greens with a smashing vinaigrette. For my husband's main he had hake with a medley of fresh veg (celery, radishes, parsley, dill...) and fingerling potato mash. I had pork loin, what I understood to be cous cous and some sort of steamed green. Both mains were delicious - my husband remarked that the veg tasted as if it had been freshly picked prior to serving. For dessert we both moaned over the chilled risotto pudding with cranberries and drunken pecans. The other dessert, an espresso pot-de-creme, was nothing to write home about. The atmosphere of the restaurant is great. We sat inside, and the wall fixtures and flowers over the fireplace were lovely. I will definitely visit again in the summer to experience the summer lot of fresh veg. read more

I've been here for brunch twice, and more recently I got married here! The event was beautiful, the cost of it all was not out of this world, very affordable. Everything was beautiful, and everyone understood how important a day like this was. The food, was AMAZING!!! I had a lot of really picky eaters at my reception, and everyone, including the picky ones ate everything and raved about it. I had an autumn wedding, and therefore had an autumn menu, I highly recommend it. My reception was up stairs in the white room, and boy was it white! People were amazed at how clean it was for being a white room. It was gorgeous, and I don't regret a thing. I love this place! read more

Great coffee, pastries and service at this bright cafe. It's very quiet, so a nice place to read or catch up with friends over coffee. Only issue is a glass of wine is $15...which way overpriced. Plenty of places for wine in the area that are just as nice (or nicer) with reasonable prices. So my wife and I come here for brunch all the time. We Love it. the food is great, the service is good, and the atmosphere is great. The only thing i would say is that it seems like during the summer it gets very hot inside the restaurant. It's hard to say bad things about a place that generally has good food, but this is one of those times where it is justified. ICI fits all the stereotypes of an arrogant NY, yuppie bistro. Having lived and traveled extensively in France, I never ever encountered a place that charged for bread. Why do I mention this? It's a small thing but it changed the tone of the dining experience. At ICI not only did they charge,they only provided 4 very thin slices for a table of 6 and then refused to provide 2 more slices! For a bill of about $500.00 this is very unwelcoming and shocking. When I shared my concern with the manager as we were leaving, she replied that "this is NY, not France", but she would see to it that the next time she would provide a complementary portion for me. Great backyard garden and good wine list. Many of the meats served are antibiotic and hormone-free - I loved my roasted Cloonshee Farms chicken. Crisp skin, very flavorful and a perfect match with the refreshing watermelon salad. They serve Il Laboratorio del Gelato products for dessert! read more

EXTREMELY disappointed in ICI. Like, beyond. After reading SO many good reviews, browsing the pictures and knowing that it's farm to table, had me so excited for this dinner. Not was I let down! Let's start from the beginning. Brave your self, this will be a long review. A girlfriend of mine and I had an 8:30 reservation for 3. Our third dropped out last minute so we were now a party of 2. We got there at 8:25, and were told we can sit either inside (TOTALLY EMPTY) or outside, which we put in our reservation. We opted for outside and were told we had to wait by they didn't have a table for us. We sit outside and wait for some cocktails and notice there's a 4 top table open. Another two top walks in and they separate the table for them and seat them. We waited another 5 mins before being seated. (Our cocktails were good by the way. I had the q-cumber and it was very refreshing). Now we are finally sitting. The table next to us (who sat before us) has already been greeted and watered. We were still waiting for menu's. We waited about 10 mins before anyone came over, or gave us water. The menu is very small. 4 apps/salads 4 entrees 3 sides and some charcuterie. We finally ordered our meals (Jeremy was our server and I only know this bc his name was on the receipt). Campagna salad with farm fresh egg. No joke, just grilled bread soaked in olive oil with pickled red onions and a hard boiled egg. That's it. I was confused, sad, and angry that I just paid $12 for grilled bread. It was not good, it was weird, and it was not a salad. Goat cheese and roasted beets. This was delicious. Just the right amount of cheese to beet, super fresh. Happy with this. For entrees we both ordered the fish which on the menu was trout, but were told it changed to pollack. It was served on a brown sauce with yellow wax beans and chorizo. It was very tasty. Salted perfectly but the sausage was a bit much. Apps took about 40 mins to come out. We weren't offered a second drink until almost done with dinner. Our waiter was literally non existent. The water from the bottle was like warm. Not cold, like warm. Love drinking warm water outside when it's 85 degrees out. Other servers seemed to be annoyed when we had to ask them for things. As a server, I am appalled by the service here. When our waiter cleared our dinner plates, we ordered our dessert, bc we didn't know the next time we would see him to order it. We had the chocolate lavender. DO NOT ORDER THIS. It literally tastes like a bottle of perfume poured on chocolate ice cream with chocolate crumbles. I am a fan of both chocolate and lavender. This dessert was inedible. The only good thing about this place is they have a nice Beaujolais rose by the glass and that's my favorite. Other than that, avoid this place. Such a huge disappointment and waste of $170. read more

Ok, their food is downright tasty, but my gripes with Ici stem from something else altogether. While I normally would just avoid these items, their motto is "eating is a political act". Apparently, their political statement is to destroy sea habitat by serving fish that is caught by bottom trawlers. Here's what I emailed them. Never got a reply. "Dear Ici Management - I am writing out of praise and concern for your restaurant. I really appreciate your view that eating is a political act, and especially appreciate your efforts to serve fresh, local and environmentally friendly food. And the food is delicious! Last night, I had the most wonderful meal at Ici. I tried a new fish for me: the Skate. While it was wonderfully tasty, I came home to do some research on it and found that Seafood Watch at the Monterrey Aquarium recommends we avoid eating it for environmental reasons: http://www.mbayaq.org/cr/SeafoodWatch/web/sfw_factsheet.aspx?fid=147. I wanted to bring this to your attention because you seem like the type of restaurant that would care about this. I really liked the concept of this neighbour restaurant using Farm to table, fresh seasonal ingredient, and I heard nice things about this place, so I went to check it out. Sadly the food was just below average. I had 3 course menu with salad, mussels with tomato sauce as main, and poached pear desert with wine pairing. The salad was somewhat tasteless, mussels in main dish was quite sandy, I actually had to spit it out one of it during the meal... Also it was really small portion.(It was only 4 mussels, 3 small shrimps, and maybe trace of fish?) The desert was poached pear with berry sauce but pear was very hard, we couldn't cut them with desert spoon. It just didn't seem like this restaurant was running on the right track. I went here the first time for brunch. The brunch is excellent. The baked eggs, French toast- rich and delicious. Best of French country cooking. One of the better brunches I've had. Dinner on the other hand, was not so great. Too much sauce, wine wasn't good enough to distract from it. It very much falls into the cliche of what is to be avoided in American-French cooking. One of my favorite places in Fort Greene. Would give it 5 stars except there are occasional lapses in food and service. Actually, the service is often a little slow, so be prepared. Weekend brunch and dinner get pretty crowded, but you can make reservations. The beet salad and the smoked trout sandwich are excellent. Truffled mushroom soup is also good. If you're an ice cream/sorbet person, they have il Laboratorio del Gelato products, so you're in for a treat. The other desserts are good, too. Also a great place to hang during the daytime during the week, as it doesn't get too crowded and they are open all day. read more

Ici is a total find. It's a gem of a brownstone with all the character intact, serving up delicious food and great service with a smile. We went to a wedding at Ici recently, it was cocktail style, with food stations all night long, the food never stopped coming, and the staff couldn't have been sweeter. They put the grooms' names on their chalkboard outside, and lit the rooms and back garden (did I mention they have a back garden?!) with tea lights so it sparkled all night long. I never felt for a moment that the service had attitude like so many obnoxious places in the city. We really, really loved it at Ici, how it feels like you're eating a home cooked meal in somebody's brownstone, and how your every need is responded to the second you walk in their door. Looking at previous reviews and the photo gallery we thought there was a diversity of dishes but it turned out to be very few, maybe because they'd have different menus for each month or week. The food here is good, definitely clean as you can order an entree and a main and eat half a loaf of bread and still go out for the night. While I never order chicken at a restaurant (and I didn't here but my friend did), I can tell you the roasted chicken is really delicious. The skate, also good, if only a bit too salty. Duck confit - more greens than duck, but duck excellent. A wonderfully cozy room, definitely a bit adult, no children, not even any tweens. Imagine that! read more

I got married iCi. The ceremony was in the garden and the wedding reception was upstairs. 25 guests are very appropriate for the space, although a few more wouldn't have hurt. If you've seen photos of the upstairs space on wedding blogs, yes, it really is that white and elegant. The owner Catherine is amazing, from initial meeting, to planning, to execution, and even just to talk with! Her staff is small but able to handle events.
