BRIC Arts Media House is a lowkey hidden gem in Brooklyn. A lot of people know it as an event space (and it's great for that), but what most people don't realize is they offer classes in podcasting, photography, graphic design, sound design, and filmmaking--usually all under $100. I do a weekly podcast, and once you take their intro class, you can rent the studio for about $25/hour. Super easy process. On a Saturday morning, I came here with a group of friends. This museum is very small. You can walk around and see it all in less than 5 minutes. This particular morning, a school class was there and the students were taking selfies. To access the bathroom, you have to go downstairs. It's very clean and large. read more

This was my first time at this space. Heard about it through a friend and wanted to find a quiet place to do some writing while I wait for the workshops to begin so I can get certified to use the facilities/equipment. BRIC is the leading presenter of free cultural programming throughout Brooklyn. Located close to BAM another premier cultural venue, BRIC houses media, art and production spaces. Residents of Brooklyn can attend an orientation to learn more about the programs and take a series of workshops that suits their needs to become certified in using the space. The workshops are mandatory and offered at a low cost since you're not essentially charged to use the space after. You can record podcasts, TV programs, shows or rent the equipment to record, produce and edit. Technicians are on hand to assist with editing etc. Rooms must however be booked in advanced to offset crowding and overbooking. Various libraries(New Lotts and Coney Island) serve as pick up and drop off sites for equipment. Some can be take for 24 hrs while others for the weekend. Essentially this is a great creative space. While you are the sole owner of any content you create and BRIC in no way tries to sensor- content must be shown on Brooklyn Public Access channels. See the website for more info on the mandates regarding how much you create and the quotas that must be met for your certification to remain current. Anyone not living in BK can be sponsored by someone who does live there simply by writing a letter saying just that and giving you a copy of a bill. read more

A great space for performing arts. Took the family to see The Knights performing . It was a show tailored towards families . This was the perfect sized venue for the show and we had a thoroughly enjoyable time . The space was clean and we loved the tiered seats and felt it wasn't too steep which can be the case sometimes . Amazing. No words. Beautiful museum-like building in downtown Brooklyn. Close to BAM and the subway with the LIRR (I had no idea you could catch the LIRR from BK: I will never ever go to Penn Station again en route to Long Island). The theater is phenomenal. If you're attending a show (I saw the luminous Esperanza Spalding two weeks ago at an FUV/NPR event), get there early if you want to sit in the balcony. Seats are wonderfully comfortable and I am too old to stand up at concerts. Love everything about this. Note: 1) There are not enough bathrooms. Clearly New York does not have the same laws about ADA and such as California and in particular, commie Santa Barbara. A warehouse-sized structure in CA would never get away with a few bathrooms. Individual ones, without stalls, I might add. This is a major design flaw and I was astonished to have to wait this long to pee. 2) The wine bar is really a "theoretical" place to buy snacks and beverages. The line was 20 people at all times. It did not move. So either drink before you get there or just forego the drinks altogether. It was amazing to watch the line just stand still. I have no explanation or ability to comprehend this but watched it bemusedly. read more

In a climate emergency you don't offer water bottle refills, or let ppl bring their own water to a concert in a public park. Real backwards thinking. Boxed water doesn't cut it. It's time for someone else to get this lease and make a greener and more inclusive concert series. read more

Woohoo for a new space!! I love this place! I recently came here to see two shows in one night: Ron Brown's Evidence and Stew's Listening Party. The first show was amazing. I love Bric's stadium seating and that it's first come first serve. That particular performance was sold out but they put more seats near the exit for people. Everyone was accommodating and the view was great from where I was. The second show was in a smaller theater and it had a great, more intimate setting. It was perfect to listen to Stew in. The band was right in front of everyone and there was no bad seat. There is a large waiting area that has stadium seating as well and they always have an art installation. I really like it, it's great and inviting. Already bought tickets for more performances! read more

Recently attended a Poetry Event/Art Exhibition there a couple of weeks ago. I glanced around the space as I sat on one of the portable cushion seats the venue provides when one sits in the audience. Located in the heart of downtown Brooklyn, the venue is quaint yet is spacious enough and I had an excellent view of all of the Poetry Slam participants. The performances were nothing but extraordinary. The Art Exhibit was fantastic! The people that work at BRIC were very nice and provided me with information and answered my questions. I would definitely recommend attending events at this beautiful venue! read more

Came to a great poetry slam here, and so did the rest of Brooklyn, because the crowd was intense. I can understand why they were the runner up at the national slam championship this year, there is a lot of local talent. They do it every month, so if you haven't gone make it a priority. read more

I was happy with my experience at Bric as I absolutely love 47Soul and that's the band that lead me to Bric. Bric House is clean and big and has a modern feel to it. It would be great if they have a parking lot, but I understand space is limited in NYC. read more

I am a producer at Brooklyn Community Access Television... which is a public access network in Brooklyn NY. The operation is run very professionally and smoothly. Staffers have a great sense of urgency in making sure each producers' program airs on cable TV without any glitches. A recent change to digital operations was professionally done. BCAT director Greg Sutton is always available for advice and Leon Taylor and Kareem Bland at programming guide us program creators so we look great on TV. read more

The space is beyond amazing but some of the people who work the event are very nasty. I came there for the Brooklyn Poetry Slam because I was interested in the Open Mic. Mind you on eventbrite.. the event states there will be an open mic after the slam. I went there and waited on line for a few minutes. Before I got into the space for the event.. I asked the lady who was standing in front of the doors nicely about the open mic.. she responded disgustedly and was repeating no no no. I just walked away from her. I sat there for about ten minutes then I walked out to ask a lady at the front desk. She was so nice and I told her about the situation.. she apologized for the lady and told me I should be able to sign up. I went back inside the space and this guy was asking me basically why I was standing. I asked him about open mic and he said that there will not be one... he proceeded to tell me I can get a seat and watch the show. Second time I've been here and there was a show just for finals... while the description on line shows different. This event looks SO COOL but please get the employees of the establishment together in a meeting to talk about Better Mannerisms 101. read more

This is, by far, hands down, no contest, one of the coolest, best, non-commercial things about Brooklyn. When the rest of the 'hood is quickly on its way to becoming a hipster playground, BRIC keeps it real. From weird art to prestigious but not terribly commercial names (like Les Nubians), to practically-free classes that you would literally pay $3,000+ somewhere else for, to being a beautiful space, it is the result of a odd little bit of luck. Since it really is community access TV, but with a tv studio as nice as anything at 30 Rock and several different performance spaces. Plus when they have a concert you can sit in their gallery and watch it for free. And take a class. And get a free camera that you would pay $200/day to rent elsewhere. Did I say free or practically so? It is by far the most inclusive, inspiring but not gentrified spaces still existing in Brooklyn, and they have an array of really cool programming in their theater. Plus if you really want inclusive, it doesn't get more inclusive than community access TV. Make it and they put it on the air. As someone who remembers the previous venue for BRIC, and has seen the arts and art resources in Brooklyn change over the last decade, this space is so deserved and beautiful. Nice to know that when the rest of the BK is gentrifying at alarming speeds that there will always be something for the people, from the old days. read more

It's so beautiful in here! I came for a panel event that was held in the "ballroom" or auditorium and it was lovely. While I waited, I sat on the "stoop" I believe it is called and gawked at the artwork below me. It has bleacher-like seats that go straight into the bottom floor. There is also a little cafe on the first floor as well. I'm glad I finally got to check it out since it was built because it's a nice addition Fort Greene. read more

It looks good but...This place has gotten so weird I will not go there again. Ever since BRIC consolidated all their programming into 1 brand new space, you can hear the air leaking from their inflated heads. The only thing they haven't managed to trash (yet) is Celebrate BK in PROSPECT Park. I used to love to go to shows at their Rotunda Gallery, both the one on Clinton and the original one in the Rotunda Downtown BK. The shows were most often Brooklyn-based artists and/or curators who mounted interesting and timely shows. The art was, at the very least, earnestly made. And I always felt welcome there. But they changed their focus in the new space. The visual art programming which does not come out of their own directory is now music- or theater-related. The directory artists get to be in a few shows. Their art has to be easy enough for somebody who has no artistic education all to understand, and bland enough not to offend the parent of a 4-year-old because they family workshop everything to death ("See? You can do that just as good!"). Did that sound mean? Their object should be to EDUCATE, not just accommodate! BRIC gallery doesn't get written about because of the above and that they've become so insular, with work that averages out, from good to awful, as mediocre quality, that no serious critic would address them. Maybe politics have to do with who is chosen. They openly advertise that they are looking for artists from Bed Stuy and Crown Heights. Oh COME ON! They've been around long enough. Artists are like bloodhounds when it comes to exhibition opps. If BRIC isn't already attracting members of that group, there's a very good reason. Their marketing touts about being supportive of the Brooklyn Art Community. Maybe they are, but only if the artist fits the specific profile they now have in mind. And as far as visiting, you had better not be outside of that profile either. The marketing team (which looks like it has been busy on this page) will stare you out of there. read more

I signed up for one of the introduction to photoshop classes offered by BRIC. The space itself is beautiful, easy to get to and offers flexible hours if you work during the day. The class itself was 4 sessions, the first two were good, went through the program step by step. Unfortunately the instructor became ill for the last two sessions, and a substitute was sent in instead. They did not teach anything, but rather had us fumble around in the program and came around to answer questions or look over your shoulder. For an introduction class I feel I could have gotten way more out of it. I am still very much a beginner and I feel the last two classes did not contribute to me learning anything since there was no one actively teaching us anything new. The classes are 3 hours long and the time could have been put to better use. read more
