My tea group went for The Afternoon Tea for Two. It wasn't a traditional afternoon tea, but it was warm, thoughtful, and full of connection. For $25 per person, the spread was impressive. We had full half sandwiches with smoked salmon or chunky avocado, huge pastries, banana bread and cinnamon rolls my favorites, plus macarons to finish it off. The tea provided was Twinings bag teas. Maison Marcel's space made the meetup even better with their wam cozy soft lighting, plants, natural tones, and cozy seating that made you want to stay awhile. The service was just okay, they were friendly but not attentive. No one came to clear the tables until they were ready for us to leave. We had to ask for everything except silverware. No plates were provided, no honey or sugar options. I would think if we only ordered the tea service, that should trigger the basics. They did bring everything out when requested but just a little disappointing since it wasn't busy and they had enough staff for the crowd there. read more

The tartine hit the spot and is probably one of my favorite breakfast dishes in Lakeview. fresh-tasting cream cheese, salmon seasoned with herbs, and a little side salad that actually made it feel like a wholesome breakfast. Food: I got the burger which was listed as one of their menu speciality. It's a very, very good $20 burger. I went to the bathroom and left my boxed leftover potatoes behind It's brunch so I got coffee, the brew of the day, which was very weak for my preference. No refills. The reviews explain a lot, when we entered no one was at the front and the sign pointing us to the back wasn't very visible. As others came in, they were just as confused. We ordered a coffee and pastry. The coffee was fine but the pastry didn't taste the most fresh even though we arrived relatively early in the morning. They also didn't warm it up. The staff putting the coffee out also didn't call any name, they just silently put the coffee and the receipt end out. Great location and warm cozy atmosphere. The environment, staff and food does give a feel that you are close to France. Pastries are excellent. Croissants and twists are flaky on the outside and so soft and fluffy on the inside. Will never be over the tartines! No really, I think about the brussel sprout bruschetta constantly. It's that good. The smoked salmon tartine is also very delicious, but the true star of the show is the brussel sprout. I've also been here for breakfast (though I'm more of a brunch gal) and love their selection of lattes. Their crepes and parfait granola are also favorites. Plus, who doesn't love a sweet treat?! Their macarons are way yummy. The interior here is gorgeous. Photo worthy truly. I also like that they offer outdoor seating when the weather is nice. French is understated, high quality, extra polite. This is overstated, low quality, horrendous counter service where the payment screen requests for a 25% tip to hand you a croissant out of the case and bus your own table. The food is below average for the price tag. For a French "bakery" the croissants are awful. Croissants are literally the most important thing to get right in French food. Find a better recipe. Fold in more butter, add more folds. Anything. Try harder. A slice of quiche after taxes is $19.92. FOR ONE SLICE OF QUICHE. So if they're selling 8 slices per quiche, they're making $160 PER quiche. How can you justify that, Maison Marcel? It's absolutely taking advantage of customers to pretend one quiche is genuinely worth $160. And SOOOO loud. Children screaming. Music overly loud. I love loud music and social settings... but why don't parents think to practice how to act at restaurants *at home* before they bring their kids out? Just try harder. Our waitress might have been training to be a magician, because she disappeared the moment we sat down and only reappeared when it was most inconvenient. Need to order? She's gone. Want to fix an incorrect dish? Good luck. Ready to pay and leave after sitting finished for 20 minutes? Still MIA. It's almost impressive, really. As for the food -- what we got wasn't what we ordered, and what we didn't ask for showed up anyway. A true culinary guessing game. And the coffee? The café au lait and Nutella latte were absolutely dreadful. Bland, bitter, and somehow worse than gas station coffee. Thank goodness we had the foresight to bring coffee from somewhere else -- which ended up being the only thing we actually enjoyed during the meal. The only saving grace? The Croque Madame was tolerable, and the side salad was fine. Not life-changing, but edible. That's about it. Maison Marcel may look the part of a stylish French café, but don't be fooled -- there's no finesse, no warmth, and certainly no reason to come back. We felt like an afterthought from start to finish. If you're reading this while deciding where to eat: save yourself the headache. The ambience of Maison Marcel is definitely the biggest draw- the plants, furnishings, and design make you feel like you're in a sunny coastal town even on a grey chicago day. I had the cappuccino and quiche- both were lovely. The quiche came in a very large portion and could be easily shared between two people. The service was very good and friendly. This restaurant is stunning! I've been meaning to come by and visit for a while now but haven't been able to since they close at 4 but I'm so glad I got to try it! We got the kale salad (with two extra eggs) as well as a ratatouille split between three of us and it was chef's kiss. The food was delicious and fresh, we basically cleared out our plates. Oh my gosh! What a dreamy spot. I've often past by Maison Marcel, but this was my first time dining here. The French/Parisian vibes are cultivated throughout the entire restaurant, from the welcoming decor to the thoughtful menu. I visited on a busy Saturday afternoon, and despite the brunch rush was able to be seated right away on the outdoor patio! We actually sat along the side of the building, which was shady and avoided the foot traffic of the patio along the front. I started with a lemonade to sip on and my friend and I ordered the almond chocolate croissant as a sweet treat. HEAVENLY! The exterior was crispy and flaky, but the inside had delicious chocolate filling that perfectly accompanied the shredded almonds on top. For lunch, I went with the avocado toast. It's served on a large slice of organic country bread with mashed avocado and two poached eggs. I noticed mine also had pickled cauliflower on it. Kind of random, but I really liked the crunch it gave! This was also served with a side salad. I also got a side of turkey bacon, which was really delicious! Overall, everything tasted really delicious. With that said, prices as steep. $8 for a side of bacon, and $17 for avocado toast hurts a little bit. I do think ingredients are thoughtfully sourced, so it's nice to know that you're consuming really good quality ingredients, but it is on rather pricey, especially compared to other breakfast spots around town. read more

Our server was busy but very warm and friendly. My open face toast with a small side salad took longer than expected and she apologized. I don't blame her but for food that require minimal cooking, it's a bit surprising. But let's talk about the food. Overall, the food was fine and unremarkable. I ordered a pistachio latte and the smoked salmon tartine. The latte was a bit too sweet, and the pistachio flavor was maybe too subtle, making it taste a bit like sweet milk with a hint of pistachio at best. The drink came warm more so than hot, a little disappointing. The tartine, as expected, was an open face sandwich. The country bread was crusty and had a great airy chew, which I consider its single highlight. The toppings and the small salad on the place were ordinary. The salad was dressed in a vinaigrette, a bit oily. I wish it had more zing and acidity to bring more life to the dish and contrast with the tartine. There was just enough salmon to spread across the toast, on a bed of cream cheese. I couldn't really taste the herbs in the spread, a bit nondescript. While I hate to say it, it's food that could easily be assembled at home. Put simply, Maison Marcel has a welcoming atmosphere but the food and drink were pedestrian. The prices for food is too high for something that can be assembled yet be so ordinary when judged by either taste, quality, or quantity. We just enjoyed a lovely breakfast here this morning. The food was delicious and the staff were welcoming and gracious. I had the avocado toast, which was good, but I would have liked more avocado on mine. My daughter had the quiche Lorraine, which was the surprise hit of the morning. It was served covered with a mustard cream sauce with ham. The crust was super flaky, and the filling was very custard-like. My wife had the Nutella crepe, and she said it was excellent. Every time we came here with our kiddos, we would awkwardly stand at the front counter for like 5 mins. there are usually one or two staff there who would give a quick look at us with the corner of his eye and then no one would say a single word to us. no "morning" (I'm not even asking the "good" part, just a "morning"), no "how can I help you", not even a hello. we start ordering food and the staff just look like they have better places to go than serving customers. I have never had a welcoming feeling at this place the times I came here. I personally felt very crowded inside - there isn't much space between tables. Someone on Instagram had recommended this place for studying, but I found it to be too loud. I had some time before a doctor's appointment and went to Masion Marcel (I had to look it up it roughly translated to Marcel House). I got a coffee and the Cheesecake. I choose a table with a couch on one side; it was comfortable and supportive. The decor is shabby chic. I returned with my husband next week and had a meal. This time we sat at the fireplace, and it looks quaint, but the hearth really made it difficult to sit back. Our server was great and helped me with the pronunciation. I had the Croque Madame (I saw the Croque Monsieur on Food Network- it is a Gruyere cheese and ham sandwich in a bechamel and cooked under the broiler. I do not know if they use the same method. The Croque Madame is the same with a fried egg on top. The Masion Marcel version did differ here as it was a scrambled egg inside the sandwich. Masion Marcel might be doing it the traditional way and I just saw it with the fried egg.) I had a Nutella latte, for me it was not worth the extra calories. The regular Americano was equally enjoyable. My husband had the matcha latte and said it was excellent. He had the Maple Bacon sandwich with egg. Each entrée came with a mixed green salad in a wonderful citrus vinaigrette. Coming back for the Tea for Two or the daily Quiche. Maison Marcel has strong social media game. Targeted ads finally brought us to our first visit to the Lakeview location. Worth it? Unless you're able to snag a table in their cute outdoor seating area, we say this is a pass for us. $17 ratatouille shakshuka? It honestly tasted liked jarred tomato sauce + roasted veg. The grapefruit juice seemed like it would be fresh squeezed at its $6 pricepoint, but we're pretty sure it was just concentrate; we ended up adding water to it. Their smoothie was unimpressive. It was coconut milk forward with the faintest hint of mint. If anything, Maison Marcel does have bread going for them. If you visit, we recommend sticking w the pastries. If Maison Marcel is more known for their decor, we'd have to question the upkeep. We recognize the decor truly is the hype/ draw. Unless they're currently doing some work, the brick exterior looked like it was peeling in some places. The inside is super super dim and could benefit from more light fixtures. (We went around 2:30 pm) In addition, they seemed a bit short staffed. Tables were not cleared; we saw several parties pile their dishes onto a vacant table, making room for other guests. We wiped down our table too.
