These are not macaroons, like a raccoon, but macaron, like the do-run-run. Though I believe they are pronounced like the former, not the latter. I've never had a macaron until yesterday. I've seen them appealingly displayed on those tiered, fancy dessert trays in books and magazines, but I've never encountered this type of dessert cookie in Houston, until now. A macaron is like an airy, crunchy, miniature Moon Pie in a variety of different flavors and colors. They originate from France are quite difficult to make. Apparently, it takes a special skill to turn out a perfect macaron. I recently decided I wanted to sample some authentic French macarons and discovered Maison Burdisso was THE macaron dealer in Houston. Jackie of Maison Burdisso operates a nondescript table at the Houston Farmer's Market. There is a blackboard listing all the available flavors. The macarons are $2 apiece. I picked 2 of each: tiramisu, red velvet, and pistachio. She also makes some provencal savories--I added a tomato flatbread ($5) to my order, and was almost tempted by the curried chicken salad ($7) if it hadn't been for sticker shock. Now for the piece de resistance! The macarons are delish! I did not get to sample the pistachio; they were scooped up by my other taste testers, who proclaimed them yummy. The red velvet was authentically red velvet, without the heaviness of a cake texture. Biting into a macaron, I was not prepared for the airiness and crumbliness of the outer shells. It did not collapse altogether, as the creamy center held everything together, but unlike a Moon Pie, a macaron is not a cake. I enjoyed a tiramisu macaron this morning. Again, the flavor is spot on. Jackie offers some interesting flavors I'll have to return for; peanut butter and jelly and dreamsicle come to mind, in addition to regular strawberry, chocolate, and vanilla. Oh! She mentioned making some mojito macarons for the next market too. Maison Burdisso does not appear to have a storefront, but operates at the Houston Farmer's Market on Tuesdays and the Midtown Farmer's Market on Saturdays. Out of all the places in Houston (Sweet, Petite Sweets, and other places with "Sweet" in their names...), Maison Burdisso is my favorite. Mainly because of the quality and their unique selection of flavors. Others may have Big Mac sized macarons but they end up tasting bland and forgettable. MB's lil' treats have flavorful fillings and crisp meringue cookies. With every visit there's a different selection of flavors and as a bonus the guy will give you +1 in addition to your order. She claims that she has the best macarons in town. She can sure talk the talk, but can she walk the walk? My opinion is....yes. I've heard many great things about her macarons from yelp, friends, and family, and as a result, I've been dying to try some. Luckily, I was able to find time to make it to the Farmer's Market at the Rice University Campus. She doesn't have an actual store. Thus, if you want to get a hold of these bad boys, you gotta go to the Farmer's Market on Tuesdays (Rice University), Saturdays (Urban Harvest at Eastside), or arrange a time to meet up with her (after pre-paying, of course). She has a large variety of flavors, and they're fantastic - both the basics such as vanilla, chocolate, lemon, pistachio to the more creative ones such as red velvet, gingerbread, tiramisu. They're definitely crispy and fresh and doesn't taste old and stale like what you may find at the other brick and mortar macaron places. She doesn't have all the flavors available every time so make sure to follow her on Facebook since she posts the flavors that will be available that week. First time having these bad boys and they exceeded my expectations! A friend of mine took me to the farmer's market at rice university (which is held on Tuesdays) and recommended trying them. On hot days like this, they recommend eating them ASAP because they do melt. If you plan on taking them home and eating them later stick them in the refrigerator for 15min, then eat them. After reading Linh N.'s review of these, I headed over on Sat. to try them out. They are very different and interesting, though quite expensive!!! When you bite into them, they kind of 'collapse', so to speak, but not in a bad way. It is hard to describe.... I ordered the Cassis (black currant), Lemon, Yogurt, Passion Fruit, Chocolate, and Pistachio. The Cassis and Lemon were both Very Good!!! (and they looked/were colored like they tasted). The Yogurt was o.k., but didn't taste like yogurt, or really anything discernable. The Passion Fruit, Choc and Pistachio were all very non-discript and unmemorable. Yay! Finally got to try my very first MBM's this morning at the Highland Village Farmer's market. I was SO excited, I immediately ran up to the booth and blurted, "1 each please!" without much calculation as to how many different flavors she actually had. Luckily for my wallet (and not so luckily for my belly) there were only 6 available flavors at the time I arrived, so the damage was somewhat controlled. While the booth board featured about 8 flavors (and I was told that Ms. Jackie would be coming back by shortly to drop off additional flavors), what I ended up with was: Pistachio, Vanilla Bean, Gingerbread, Pear (which tasted more like Green Apple), Strawberry & Pomegranate. With thanks to Jeffrey C & James R, I luckily doubled up on the Vanilla Bean & Pistachio flavors and omg, it was amazing. At first bite, I was a bit shocked at how sweet and whip-creamy the Vanilla Bean filling was, but then, after the second bite, I fell in love. The texture and flavor immediately reminds you of an old-fashioned ice cream sandwich, and let me tell you, I just finished my last one just now and I am SO sad :(. Also, I never liked gingerbread, and was a bit annoyed when somehow this little brown macaron made it into my box (since I wasn't expecting it to be a choice), but was very pleasantly delighted at how tasty it was. Truly, every single flavor was just unique, and MDM's really have their very own spin to the whole macaron trend. Artistically crafted, and creatively infused, you will crave these little colored jewels until the very next time you get your hands on them. My name is Anthony and I am a macaron addict. Unbeknownst to most of you, Paris has been torn apart for the past decades by a strife between its most famous pastry houses. Who, they ask, makes the best macaron on the face of earth? Although the Macaron has been around for centuries, we can probably agree that its modern form was invented by the Ladurée clan in the mid 20th century. Their hegemony on the macaron world was quickly challenged by the Dalloyau tribe, the Fauchon gang, and the Lenotre family, resulting in a religious war that is nowhere near completion, and literally, 100s of tons of macarons sold each year in Paris. Lately, the Pierre Hermé Secession (from Fauchon) made choices much more complicated. A lifelong member of the Dalloyau team myself (note for self. Must make/sell t-shirts. Would make a fortune), I have been known for my many infidelities ("they are just sooo tempting..."). Now, for those of you that did not have a geography class ever. Simply put, the world is divided in two. Paris, and the rest. Once you have been exiled outside Paris, as I have for almost ten years, macarons become a scarce resource. Needless to say, my expectations when it comes to macaron are quite high. Addicts literally smuggle boxes with them when they visit the motherland. (On that note, hats off to Ladurée for its shop in Paris CDG airport, including the soon to be famous "macaron selling cart just before security". Pure Genius.). Now comes the painful part. What happens after the day it will take you to finish your suitcase worth of macarons? Do not panic ! Jackie Burdisso got your back. Her small table at the farmer's market is hard to miss. Dozens of extremely flashy colored small macarons for your delight. Some are seasonal, others are classics. Take a big box with at least one of everything until you figure out which ones you like. They are very well executed. Some flavors are spectacular (blood oranges!) some less (i am not a fan of the green apple one). Some of the classics are every bit as good as Dalloyau's or Ladurée's (lemon anyone?). The chocolate one (the benchmark with the café one) was very good, but not perfect (the outer shells could be a little less cooked/ a bit more moist). I'll say more when I have tasted more. Now, people at the LeNotre culinary institute. The gauntlet has been thrown. In your own backyard. Bring us a real patisserie shop in Houston. If you find them too pricey, stick to Oreo cookies. These guys are less convenient than other places which sell macarons as they do not have a shop. I purchased mine at the farmers market on Tuesday at Rice University, but they also sell them at the farmers market near Kirby and Richmond on Saturdays and at Saks Fifth Avenue where they cost more. After trying them just once in an attempt to compare them to other places, these are hands down my favorite. The pistachio in particular was amazing. I admit to having a weakness for pistachios in general and the intense, rich flavor of these was perfect. I also tried vanilla bean, chocolate, pink grapefruit, and lavender all of which were great. What sets these apart for me is the texture though. They had a light, thin outer crust combined with a tasty and moist meringue filling you expect from an authentic French macaron. If these guys had a store, I might go broke ;) so maybe it's a good thing they are a challenge to find. They do accept credit cards for purchases of $10 or more. My boyfriend actually had his very first taste of macaroons from Maison Burdisso, and now everytime he tries a macaroon from somewhere else, he always tells me that the ones he had from Maison Burdisso were MUCH better! I haven't yet initiated my "Viva La Macaron" series in my home base of Houston, but given the recent influx of macarons to dessert shops (Petite Sweets, SWEET, Araya), I may need to start. The one place I did recently try isn't a shop at all: Maison Burdisso macarons are available at Houston Farmer's Markets. I tried my hand at the Saturday morning Urban Harvest Market on Richmond. These bad boys are served up homemade by Jackie Burdisso from to-go containers plucked out of an ice chest. Pierre Herme, all upscale and fancy, this is not. What Maison Burdisso's macarons are: dang good. Per the Houston Press, it's a family recipe from the south of France. And while eating French macarons in Houston is a lot like eating Texas brisket in Paris, I have no qualms in arguing that Maison Burdisso's macarons are as good as it gets in the Space City, even before venturing on my quest. Her macarons are small. Not as small as SWEET's, which just look infinitesimally tiny, but smaller than your average U.S. macaron, such as the one you find at La Patisserie in Austin. But macarons are supposed to be small, and the Maison Burdisso ones compare favorably to the Parisian macaron at, say, La Duree. For Texans expecting a gigantic sized dessert for the Jefferson outlay (that's $2), yes, you'll be disappointed. But these suckers are hard to make, especially in the wicked Texas heat. It's an artisan craft, so if you're disappointed, go spend those bones on some simpleton cupcakes. As for the macaron itself, they're fantastic. The filling is exceptionally delightful, a perfect airy cream that held up in complexion and flavor. The interior of the cookie was similarly well done. The only complaint was the slightly hard crust. It wasn't a thoroughly effortless bite, as macaron lovers long for, just mostly one. One thing that separates the Maison Burdisso macarons from others is the uniqueness and vastness of the flavors. Whereas most shops will stick to the traditional vanilla + chocolate + coffee and then venture out with some "safe" fruits like "framboise" or "fraise", Maison Burdisso has some truly wonderful flavors. We picked up a four-pack of vanilla bean, calvados baked apple, acai, and honey. And that's just the tip of the iceberg--check out the site for her other rotating flavors. The wonderfully different taste was the real winner. Even the vanilla bean (my favorite of the four) was fantastically different from just the traditional vanilla flavor (although admittedly, I've always been a sucker for the bean). I'm no macarons connoisseur, but they know how to truly capture the essence of something, whether it tiramisu, black forest, lemon, pistachio, lavendar, and my personal favorite coconut, and infuse it into a perfect bite. Yeah, I eat these whole, because they are that good. You can also take like three to four small bites from it, but each bite has the same intensity of flavor. Imagine Remi from Ratatouille when he bites into the cheese. Two dollars a piece and February 11 they will be selling heart shaped macarons that are a little bit larger. Without a doubt in my mind, THE best macarons in the city. I've tried them all, so I can say this with confidence. Maison Burdisso macarons may not have a storefront like many of the other bakeries in town and the availability is limited for the day when you go to the Farmer's Market. But boy are they worth the drive, the time, the effort. They do accept advance orders if you place them with the number listed. The flavors they make are incredibly unique - some that you doubt will even taste good. That variety is unbeatable and it is always exciting to see what they will have for the day. I am always adventurous in ordering flavors that I rarely see at other places, so I've tried their Bergamot Lemon, Mango, White Chocolate and Fig. I could eat their White Chocolate macarons forever and die happy. All that I ordered tasted fantastic. The owner was extremely friendly and made recommendations on which ones to go with. We had some heavenly macarons recently in NYC at Madeleine Patisserie. My wife found out about Maison Burdisso and wanted to buy their macarons at the Tafia Farmer's Market. I was not expecting these macarons to rival the ones we ate at Madeleine Patisserie but to our surprise, these macarons are marvelous. At $2/each, they are pricey but they are a great dessert if you want to treat yourself to something special. The only difference between these macarons and the ones at Madeline Patisserie is these crumble a little more easily. I"m not sure if that's a good thing or not, with regard to macarons. The owner of mason burdisso was very friendly and helpful. I had tried many times to pick up from kohl-linscomb only to be disappointed by their lack of knowledge staff or a sold out sign. But now I know I can order directly and at a cheaper price. The macarons were great texture, size (they aren't supposed to be that big) and flavor. I recommend the Earl grey. Not much selection here in Houston, but it trumps that of sugarbabys (also good), central market (ok) and andres (horrible). read more

I drove all the way from Stafford/Sugar Land area to Rice to get some of these suckers! Anji A. loves these macarons and felt strongly I should try them. I was having a real craving on Tuesday and decided the drive was going to happen. The gentlemen that helped me was pretty cool! He gave me a free rose macaron since I drove so far. I bought pistachio, vanilla bean, peach & lavender (plus the rose). Vanilla was definitely the stand out. It was like eating ice cream...*drools*. The rose macaron is exactly how it sounds- a rose flower. Whatever a rose smells like- is what it taste like. Interesting. Peach, pistachio & lavender were pretty aight. With over 60 flavors, I'm bound to gain at least 10 lbs. in an attempt to try them all. I purchased the macarons at the Highland Farmer's Market off of Suffolk Dr., which she is there every Sunday. She has a set menu of flavors to choose from and of course I had to get one of each (strawberry, black forest, green tea, chocolate, lemon, kiwi, pb&j, and pistachio). Jackie even threw in an extra green tea macaron because it was smaller than the rest. So far I've had the black forest, green tea, kiwi, and pb&j and the verdict is...best macarons in Houston thus far! They're creamier than the macarons from SWEET but are similar in size. At $2 a pop, it's easy for you to walk away with an empty wallet though. I will definitely go back and purchase more when she has the pumpkin and earl gray flavor available. read more

I've been a fan of macarons ever since I went to Paris several years ago and Laudree spoiled me. I've been searching in Houston for a delicious macaron place and I found myself here one Saturday morning at the farmer's market. Seeing the good reviews this place had, I was very hopeful. However, Yelp seriously failed me. We ended up trying the Pistachio and the Chocolate. Both fillings were just okay, nothing outstanding. What really bugged me was the crust on both the cookies. The cookie was not smooth and light/airy as it should have been. It was too thick. Maybe I came on an off day but I certainly not willing to return to see if that is true. I must say, I have never had macaroons before. When I first got the thought in my head that I wanted to try it, I turned to my trusty fellow yelpers to see what was out there. I chased down Maison Burdisso based on people's reviews on here and thought why not, the reviews were good, the pictures looked great and they were conveniently located at various farmer's markets, one happening on Wednesday's right near my work. Earlier today I walked over to the farmers market in front of city hall an hour before they closed hoping to maybe try one of Maison Burdisso's delicious confections. Upon arriving in front of the booth, we saw it was pretty empty already aside from a small tray with TINY half dollar size macaroons in a box labeled "Caramel". I was pretty disappointed and thought they must have been that good and sold out. I'm not a huge caramel fan, but I thought hell why not. The guy attending the booth was nice enough and very friendly. As we ordered 2 macaroons (2 bucks a pop for a half dollar size cookie!!) he explained to us about the types they have, where they can be found and about special ordering. My boyfriend and his daughter, who I'd bought the two macaroons for were busy behind me eating away. When I finally got a chance to try it buy was I utterly disappointed. First of all, for 2 bucks a pop, please make them atleast double the size. I felt so ripped off eating this tiny morsel and having paid so much money for it. I think a better price would have been a dollar a piece. It was nothing special and I have to say I was very disappointed. This is my only experience with macarons, but a good one! These are colorful and full of flavor, and fun texture. I have picked these up several time from the farmer's market. I have had the pistachio (yes, do it), lemon (super lemony without being harsh), pomegranate (nice and fruity), earl gray (good flavor, but almost a bit peppery), and almandine (I think? It was nice subtle fruity and creamy). So cute, so pretty, worth the $2 a cookie every now and then for a treat. read more

Picked up these macarons at the eastside urban harvest farmers market off Richmond on Saturday morning. Lovely ladies at the booth who were very warm and happy to talk with us about their macarons. And the verdict? These are tasty, tasty treats. But are they the best macarons I've had? No. Better than macarons from Paris? I can tell you absolutely not. Best macarons in Houston? Hmm, probably up for debate. But these are quite good. Texture of the cookie is crumbly with the right amount of give. I would like to see more variety in the filling. These were all butter cream, and I really like jam/ganache fillings in macarons. The best flavors are the more unique ones: bachelor button, blood orange. Vanilla, pistachio, and chocolate were just meh. Not a fan of the green apple. Would probably pick these up more often if there were a store front! read more

My first encounter with macarons was at The Gourmet Experience, a basement level of an El Corte Ingles, a Spanish Whole Foods equivalent in Madrid, Spain. I stalked the pastry/dessert counter and eyed the macarons. After some Spanish conversation, two little cookies fell into my hands, then into my mouth. They were so delicious I had to put it down after each delicate bite. Best I ever had. And with Maison Burdisso? The next best thing! Sadly, I purchased mine at Kuhl-Linscomb, at a higher price, but it was still worth it. It took the consideration that stealing is a sin to keep me from eating the other two of the four my friend and I were sharing. Pistachio is my favorite, with Lemon my next. Lemon tastes like a classy Girl Scout lemon cookie. Buy them from the Farmers Market! But if you have to go to KL, they're in the back of the front (first) store in the fridge. Best macarons I've had in Houston. I've tried some from a few others, but these are consistently great. They have a nice crispy shell, but the filling is just so smooth and delicious. I've tried pistachio, vanilla, blood orange, lemon, cassis, lily of the valley and jasmine. They're all great but pistachio is my favorite thus far. A $2 a cookie, you might be cringing, but they're worth every penny. Consider them a luxurious gift to yourself. The guy who I ordered from at the Farmer's Market gave me the last pistachio macaron free because it was my first one. Also, they were melting. But very nice sales tactic. Though my reaction, especially after all the build up, is "Meh. I've had better," I debated giving this place three stars, because it was the only macaron place in Houston. Then I recalled that Araya Chocolates has macarons, and they're better than Maison Burdisso. The first time I had macarons (well, probably the first time that I was aware what I was eating were macarons) was when I visited my sister several years ago, and she handed me some macarons her friend had made. I was puzzled by how they could be so delicious and yet be related to something I hated so much (macaroons--I hate coconut flakes, even typing out that "c" word in conjunction with the "f" word makes me shudder; seriously, even the most insulting "c" word to women in conjunction with the "f" word that is synonymous with sex would not garner the same reaction). Of course, I had gotten coconut macaroons confused with macarons, that delicate confection made with blanched almonds, granulated sugar, confectioner's sugar, and egg whites. When I was strolling through the Rice Farmers Market, I spotted Maison Burdisso and moseyed on over for some $2 macarons. I remembered having had its macarons at the Bayou City Farmers Market a few months ago, but not my actual opinions on it. That should've been a sign, because I tend to remember good food experiences, or, at the very least, remember if I liked something. Though that was a month ago, I don't remember what I had (see what I mean?), but I do remember thinking that Maison Burdisso must've been having an off day, because the macarons were way too crusty. This time, I had scanned some reviews to confirm my mistaken belief that my previous encounter was a fluke. I read the review that said the macarons were as good as Madeleine Patisserie in New York, and was super pumped up, like Rocky. You guys. Seriously. Yelp fail. It's like I just found out my best friend was sleeping with my boyfriend (a few of my closest friends are guys, so that would be like, double-stabbing). Perhaps the high rating is because us Houstonians have not encountered very many, if any, macarons. I have a few requirements for a good macaron. The crust was too thick and broke into jagged pieces that ruined the mediocre texture of the cookie. Unless I can fly my butt to Paris or New York for some macarons, I'm either going to have to make my own or rediscover Araya (more like 3* macarons there). Maison Burdisso macarons are exquisite. They are attractive in form and color and, of course, are delicious. These come very fresh and with a perfect texture. I've never had one with a "thick crust." The ones I've gotten have a thin, shell-like texture that cracks when bitten into, often giving that audible crack-pop sound that you get with truffles that are perfectly tempered. Within that there's a soft and chewy meringue. There are a variety of flavors from which to choose. Regulars like chocolate, caramel de sel, stawberry, to dessert flavors like Black Forest, Bananas Foster, Callisons d'Aix, to aromatics like green tea, lavender, coffee, and more. The fillings are flavored buttercream or fruit jam. Yes, they are $2.00 each. However, a lot of work goes into making these lovely but temperamental sweets, and they are made fresh from an individual. They are not factory made, mass producted cookies full of preservatives. Definitely worth treating yourself to one of these beauties! I am a regular customer and I drive quite a way to buy these lovelies. I also love the spiced almonds, marshmallows, and caramels. Absolutely the best macaroons ever! I've tried others from across the US, including the legendary Laduree in Paris. These macaroons blow them all away! best. macarons. in Houston. period. having done a google, yelp, and other sites search for macarons about 6 months ago, i came across the houstonpress article about maison burdisso. i was intrigued, since they're at the Highland Village farmers market and I had only just recently had a dismal experience at Sprinkles Cupcakes, also in Highland. so i figured, what the heck, i still haven't satisfied my sweet tooth, i'll give em a go - and what a great decision THAT was. since then i've also visited them at the Eastside Farmers market, and had a personal delivery by Miss Jackie at a CVS, lol. they're that good. i prefer the fruity flavors like pomegranate and strawberry, but also love the pistachio and the lemon which are classics, the earl grey (my favorite tea, the macaron is spot on), and holiday flavors like the gingerbread. the husband loves the chocolate but i'm selfish so i generally only buy them for myself ;) only qualm is the price, for $2 each i could certainly make them for less but its such a labor of love i'd much rather just get them ready to go......and eat them in my car on the way back home. ha! read more

These macarons were absolutely perfect! They weren't too sweet and that's what I like about them. My favorite flavor was blackberry but they were all good. I picked these up from the Urban Harvest Farmer's market off Richmond. I definitely will go back for more next time! read more

When I first encountered Maison Burdisso at the Rice farmer's market, I was immediately struck by the beautiful, colorful display of Jackie's macarons. Having never seen such desserts, I bought one to try (lemon), and after eating it while standing at the booth, I then bought a dozen assorted flavors to try out and share. My coworkers pretty much drained that first dozen the next day and I've been back nearly every week since. The colors are as vibrant as the nearly endless list of flavors. Every week Jackie seems to come up with something new, and I have yet to be disappointed in anything I have bought from her. Most people think of the American version of macaroons when I mention these (you know, the coconut ones) but once they try these cookies, coconut macaroons are likely never to be even a blip on the radar again. Jackie's cookies are a labor of love, and while some may view the price as being a bit steep, once they understand the time, effort, and patience required to make each macaron, they understand that they are really getting a steal. While it is near impossible for me to choose a favorite, I think I'd have to go with almond if I absolutely had to pick one. However, they are all delicious, and this is coming from a person who generally does not go for sweets. If you want to try a dessert that's not only delicious but also unlike anything else you've had, do stop by either the Tuesday or Saturday farmer's market and do not miss Maison Burdisso. And I'm no psychologist, but after reading Susan D.'s review, I'd have to say that Green Eyed Susan has a major case of the green eyed monster...you know which deadly sin I'm talking about :) read more
