After my second visit today, I won't be returning nor would I recommend this place. I first visited the week they opened. The line was around the corner and service was a little clunky but hey, the just opened and needed time to iron out the wrinkles. Today, the line was short on a Monday 11am which was great. When it was my turn, the man behind the counter stared blankly at me. No greeting, no smile. Since more than half of the pastries were gone and I wasn't sure if they restock during the day, I smiled and asked if there were any plain croissants. He didn't say a word, only moved his head slightly from side to side to indicate a silent "no". No recommendations, no "let me check", no expression. No words. Nothing. What happened to friendly customer service? Not sure if he was having a bad day or not, but that's not the point. As the price of eating out increases, it's not too much to provide a minimal level of customer service. Pretty damn good croissants, pastries and sandwiches for a reasonable price. Your traditional croissants and pain au chocolats are in the $4-5 range and are solid! You get good crispy, soft, flaky layers of carb with a light buttery base flavor. Not too overpowering. The croque was so buttery and cheesy as well. I'm very surprised at the lemon meringue tart, though. The custard is well-formed but not thick and the meringue is so light, it floats off the tart if you bite it wrong. The flavors are so on point as well. It's a good reason to go to Danville, personally. read more

The bakery display had a fly in it and the person helping us saw it and I was disgusted he didn't even throw away the bakery goods that the fly was all over I mean at least do it for show . I travelled all the way from Los Angeles to try this patisserie. It did not disappoint! The croissant is truly deserving of the award that it won. The Saint Honeré was incredible. Unfortunately, I didn't realize how quickly they run out of popular items every day. Next time I'll have to get there before 9am. The croissant? Truly excellent--flaky, buttery, and five stars all the way. But sadly, the rest of our experience at Maison Benoit fell short--closer to 1.5 stars overall. Let's start with the space: no one was actively bussing tables, and with limited seating inside, this made it hard to find a clean or comfortable place to sit. One employee was using a bistro chair near the bathrooms to charge their phone. Several tables are placed in full view of trash cans and dirty bussing tubs, which really detracts from the dining atmosphere. The couches were visibly dirty and not functional for eating, and the table toward the back is awkwardly positioned next to the bathrooms. There's also a large table in the center of the room that eats up valuable space. You could significantly improve the layout by swapping the couches and large table for smaller bistro tables. For reference, Café Douce France in Palo Alto does this well: it's efficient, clean, and accommodates more guests without sacrificing comfort. Now for the coffee: my husband and I ordered two cappuccinos with almond milk. Both were lukewarm with a sour, bitter, and acrid flavor--truly unpleasant. The baristas don't seem to have proper training in pulling espresso or steaming milk. I'd strongly recommend visiting Piatti or similar cafes to observe how their teams prepare espresso drinks--there's a clear difference in quality and technique. If I were to return, it would be solely for the croissant or a pastry. But until the seating, service, and coffee are addressed, it's hard to recommend Maison Benoit as a full café experience. read more

Really happy about having this special bakery in the east bay! So far we have been there a handful of times and tried numerous delicious pastries, and I can always taste the high quality of both ingredients and the technique going into each and everything I tried. We happened to be in the area so we stopped in after hearing rave reviews about this place. Obviously others have heard too and the line was out the door and about a half block long about 10:15 on a Friday morning. It's got a casual vibe, lots of people sitting around enjoying their morning coffee and pastries! It took us about 20-25 minutes to get to order. I got a pain au chocolat and my wife got a regular croissant and a sandwich to go. The pain au chocolat was amazing- flaky and delicate on the outside with a little crunch and buttery and soft inside. Miles better than a Costco croissant! The sandwich was tasty as well. I found this bakery on Instagram and decided to give them a try. It was packed inside, but they moved through the lines quickly. My mom and I tried three pastries, including the salmon roll. It was basically like a puff pastry of sort stuffed with salmon. That was our favorite, and it was so buttery and flaky, and had a lot of salmon in it. Wowww!!!! Tastes like true croissants out of Paris! We stood in line Mother's Day morning for about an hour smelling the delicious buttery aromas of croissants baking. It was a nice day so the wait wasn't too bad. But then we got to the front and they said they sold the last croissant to the lady in front of me. I was devastated. Apparently all the croissants I was seeing were claimed by online orders! But just as I was losing hope one of the bakers came with a tray of fresh croissants for sale which I quickly laid claim to. No line today! We are walking in at 11AM on a Thursday. Everything looks amazing to eat. I ordered a pain au chocolat and an espresso. My boyfriend ordered an eclair cafe, a Bayonne sandwich and a latte. Our kid ordered the ham and cheese quiche roll. The pain au chocolat was perfect!! My boyfriend didn't like his sandwich, but I took a bite and I liked the prosciutto in it. Our kid liked the ham and cheese, but only ate half because they weren't hungry this morning. Got back from France a few months ago and have been desperately craving a good croissant! Happy to report that the croissants at Maison Benoit definitely stack up to those in Paris! I stocked up and ordered the pan suisse (my fav!), almond chocolate croissant, chocolate croissant and apple turnover. The pastries were deliciously flaky and buttery but had a great crisp outer crust. The consistency was tres bien! Don't let a long line scare you away. The line moved fast. This is my second time, I came specifically to try their sandwiches and lunch stuff. The line was not too bad, about 15 feet out the door. Food notes: Spinach and Feta Quiche (Stars 3 $10.50) The Quiche was ok, part of the problem was we asked for it to be heated. When it was delivered to the table, it was not completely heated, some cold spots with slight warm spots. The Spinach Feta filling was ok, it seemed a little watery and bland, and being cold didn't help. The crust was ok, nothing special. Croque Monsieur (Stars 3.5 $12.50) They used good quality ham and cheese. The creamy béchamel was really good but again we heated it up (not sure if it should be eaten cold). They say it has a crispy crust, but that didn't happen, they didn't reheat enough to get crispy crust. They are not made fresh to order, rather made in batches and place out in the display case to be reheated. Hazelnut Chocolate Cookie (Stars 3 $4.50) The hazelnut and chocolate worked well together, tasted good, but nothing special The praliné topping was good, but wasn't really needed and made it very messy to eat. There was no way to pick it up without getting the topping all over. Parisian Sandwich (Stars 3.5 $14.00) The ham and Comté cheese was good quality, and of course the French baguette it was served on. It all tasted great but on the dry side. I added a packet of Dijon mustard to help. I guess this style of sandwich is not for me. I like mustard mayo, and the works. As you approach the bakery, you're greeted with the enticing aroma of freshly baked bread. The line moved quickly, and there's both indoor and outdoor seating.
