I used to come here often because the pastries and bread are truly delicious, but the way food is handled is unacceptable. On one visit, I asked to have my bread sliced and the employee simply dumped it into a shopping bag. No bread bag or anything. Today, I asked to have my bread sliced a certain way, and the employee handling the drinks, after touching multiple surfaces in the coffee prep area, started showing other staff how to slice it and then proceeded to touch my bread with her bare hands. I was shocked but stayed quiet and took the bread anyway. Another issue is how the bread is stored. They line pastries up on an open shelf and employees talk right over it with customers. It feels so unsanitary, especially since anyone could easily spitting over the pastries. Experiences like this make it clear that staff aren't being properly trained in basic food safety. read more

We walked from her house which was 2 miles and treated ourselves to a couple pastries and cappuccinos and before doing the 2 mile walk back. Came here on account of instagram and was excited to try Maison Benoit since we do not have that many French bakeries here in the East Bay. Disappointed with the staff (mostly teenagers) and is apparent they need training beyond customer service. After reading other reviews on Yelp, others share my sentiment as well. It's not that they were intentionally rude (which they were by the way) they just look miserable working here and therefore couldn't give two flying *you-know-whats* about us paying customers. It's unfortunate because it tainted my experience to a point where I didn't want to return before even tasting the food. One staff member (pictured) was the outlier though, he responded to my questions with a positive attitude and clearly communicated over the counter so 1 star added for him. Now onto the food, it definitely has potential to be up there with the heavy hitters one day with a few tweaks here and there. We ordered the breakfast board which comes with a croissant, a pain au chocolat and a baguette served with a side of jam, honey & butter. The baguette was my favorite and it paired beautifully with the honey & butter. The croissants were flaky but needed more substance, perhaps a bit more butter and needed more layers. Good enough for the east bay but still needs work to be on the caliber of Arsicault. A message to the teenage staff: No matter where you work, please try your best. I had always passed by and finally had time to give it a try... it was as a Friday at 1:30PM....not busy...there were sadly no more chocolate croissants...and I noticed a fly in the case where the pastries were so I decided against trying other pastries. I read the first item on the menu was the croque monsieur....I decided to be adventurous. I ordered it with the girl working behind the display...she was very rude, she grabbed my croque monsieur from the open top shelf...(I had no idea they were being stored there...) and since they are giant pieces of bread smothered in cheese with ham and mor cheese in the middle, it barely was held by her tongs, she plopped it onto a plate and rudely told me I needed to order my drink at the cashier and walked away. The cashier grabbed my plate and put it at the window for the kitchen to heat it up...I sat down to wait for my order. Someone rushed out and to set my food at my table, I asked where I could get utensils, he said "oh, I'll get it" and never came back lol I ended up finding them...it was a nice day out and I was willing to look past all that...until I tried the food...all I tasted was stale bread and just wasn't good. Very disappointing way to start the dining experience. ATMOSPHERE : (4 out of 5) Great design, decor...maybe a little cramped but enough seating including comfy chairs and couches. Lots of outdoor seating with umbrellas. No AC inside and it was 95 outside so hovering around low to mid 80s inside made it a little uncomfortable to dine in. Perhaps thats why the teens/young adults working the counter were not agreeable? But you get to see a little of the work the staff and chefs in the back/side do as its a nearly open kitchen design. Very cool. One of the Chef's acknowledged us, smiled and nodded! Thank you Chef. FOOD: (3.8 out of 5) ham and cheese croissant was a little bland. A few small slices of cheese, ve try little thin sliced ham, flaky croissant but way too airy lacking any real substance or crumb. Hazelnut cookie and Brioche seemed a little stale. Lemon Mint cake was really nice and moist!! Salmon Quiche was very good too and comes with a salad. Fresh Orange juice was very delightful and refreshing! They obviously are good enough to be thriving in downtown Danville. Might be a volume vs quality issue to try and keep up with demand. Not a bad experience overall but not a good one either. Get the canele! My friend told me these sell out fast and I see why. It had a rich, almost burnt caramel on the outside with a soft tender inside. I've had the croissant and chocolate croissant twice now and they are a-ok in my book. Airy and flaky, I thought it lacked buttery-ness, which oddly some reviewers thought they were too buttery? It pains me to leave this review but this can't be the same place I swooned over last year. We were on our way home from the North Bay and were excited to stop by for dessert. As soon as we stepped in we both noticed the croissants were pale. Concerning. The service was friendly and helpful as usual. The pastries looked...sad. Mille feuille texture suffered from it being late in the day but the cream lacked flavor. The base of my chocolate caramel tartlet was so hard I could barely cut it with a (metal) fork. The flavors were ok, but nothing jumped out demanding attention. A lemon meringue tartlet lacked a citrus hit to balance the sweetness of the meringue. I can no longer call this a top French bakery in the Bay Area. Is it good? Yeah, the pastries are a nice treat. Is it worth a one hour drive? It wasn't today. read more

I had this bakery bookmarked on my list to try ever since they opened. A few weeks back, I was in the downtown area attending a Yelp event and decided to stop by to try their pastries. Parking: no designated parking lot but given its downtown Danville, it's understandable. There's street parking and some city parking lots nearby. Service: average, it's a bakery so it's not going to be restaurant quality service. You order at the counter and the staff packs your pastries and you are on your way. There was no line when I was there so I can't really tell how efficient it is on a busy day. Ambiance: clean and good size bakery with some sofa seating, and some bar seating for you to enjoy your pastries if you decide to dine in. Pastries: 5/5 for the eclairs and the chocolate croissant which were the only pastries I was able to purchase during my visit. I really want to try their almond croissant but I didn't even see a sign for it when I was there, probably because it's sold out first thing in the morning. Maybe one day I'll be lucky enough to get my hands on one. The chocolate eclair was the better one compared to the coffee eclair but both were amazingly delicious. Came here Sunday morning and by 10AM there was already a line out the door. I probably waited a good 20-30 minutes to get to the counter to order. Was it worth it? Sadly, I would say don't believe the hype BUT do try it for yourself to make your own decision. I spent nearly $60 on 8 pastries and a cold brew. - Ham & Cheese Roll: you can tell the ingredients are top quality, but the flavor was just meh. - Canele: just okay, nothing to rave about. - Croissants: Both the Almond Chocolate and Chocolate croissants were really good! I'd definitely recommend ordering these. - Fraisier: By far my most favorite thing I ordered. Strawberries were fresh and sweet. - Eclairs: Both good, but expensive (as is everything else I ordered) - Cold Brew: Would not order this again. All in all, I'm glad I tried their pastries. I do have a couple favorites. I would like to go back and try their croque monsieur and a latte. Would I go back otherwise? Likely not. Wowww!!!! Tastes like true croissants out of Paris! We stood in line Mother's Day morning for about an hour smelling the delicious buttery aromas of croissants baking. It was a nice day so the wait wasn't too bad. But then we got to the front and they said they sold the last croissant to the lady in front of me. I was devastated. Apparently all the croissants I was seeing were claimed by online orders! But just as I was losing hope one of the bakers came with a tray of fresh croissants for sale which I quickly laid claim to. Chocolate almond croissants: epicly delicious! Crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside! Perfect amount of chocolate and almond filling Almond croissant: perfectly sweet and laminated! My boyfriend ordered an eclair cafe, a Bayonne sandwich and a latte. Our kid ordered the ham and cheese quiche roll. The pain au chocolat was perfect!! My boyfriend didn't like his sandwich, but I took a bite and I liked the prosciutto in it. Our kid liked the ham and cheese, but only ate half because they weren't hungry this morning. Had heard about this place from some coworkers. They had mentioned things sell out quickly and there are lines out the door, so maybe want to get there early. Decided to go on a Saturday, got there around 7:20am ish, to my surprise, no line out the door. Got up to the glass and started to scan to see what looked good and proceeded to order. The young gentleman that was "helping" me didn't seem like he wanted to be there, but I gave him my order which consisted of the almond croissant, pain suisse, chouquette, cinnamon brioche, kouign-amann and galette des rois chocolate peanuts (my fav)...Think he was annoyed that I kept adding pastries to the order or he didn't want to be there. I was afraid to ask any questions for fear I was going to get the Soup Nazi treatment. I'm glad I didn't add any drinks, as that might've pushed him over the edge. Told him I was finished, slid over to the register and then he started talking to a co-worker that was helping another customer. He was getting on his co-workers' case for not knowing his order (apparently, he's a regular at the shop). As they say, first impressions go a long way and I was not impressed with the service I was provided. HOWEVER, the pastries were top notch, everything that I ordered was delish, melt in your mouth good (gotta be the butter). We happened to be in the area so we stopped in after hearing rave reviews about this place. Obviously others have heard too and the line was out the door and about a half block long about 10:15 on a Friday morning. It's got a casual vibe, lots of people sitting around enjoying their morning coffee and pastries! It took us about 20-25 minutes to get to order. I got a pain au chocolat and my wife got a regular croissant and a sandwich to go. The pain au chocolat was amazing- flaky and delicate on the outside with a little crunch and buttery and soft inside. Miles better than a Costco croissant! The sandwich was tasty as well. The flavors are great but when I got home, they left the quiche out of the bag even though I was charged for it and when you call, it's just a recording and you can't get through to talk to someone. They also didn't put a receipt in my bag so I have no way to show that I paid for the item. I should have counted all the items before I left, my bad otherwise cute place and good food. After my second visit today, I won't be returning nor would I recommend this place. I first visited the week they opened. The line was around the corner and service was a little clunky but hey, the just opened and needed time to iron out the wrinkles. Today, the line was short on a Monday 11am which was great. When it was my turn, the man behind the counter stared blankly at me. No greeting, no smile. Since more than half of the pastries were gone and I wasn't sure if they restock during the day, I smiled and asked if there were any plain croissants. He didn't say a word, only moved his head slightly from side to side to indicate a silent "no". No recommendations, no "let me check", no expression. No words. Nothing. What happened to friendly customer service? Not sure if he was having a bad day or not, but that's not the point. As the price of eating out increases, it's not too much to provide a minimal level of customer service. Got back from France a few months ago and have been desperately craving a good croissant! Happy to report that the croissants at Maison Benoit definitely stack up to those in Paris! I stocked up and ordered the pan suisse (my fav!), almond chocolate croissant, chocolate croissant and apple turnover. Pretty damn good croissants, pastries and sandwiches for a reasonable price. Your traditional croissants and pain au chocolats are in the $4-5 range and are solid! You get good crispy, soft, flaky layers of carb with a light buttery base flavor. Not too overpowering. The croque was so buttery and cheesy as well. I'm very surprised at the lemon meringue tart, though. The custard is well-formed but not thick and the meringue is so light, it floats off the tart if you bite it wrong. The flavors are so on point as well. It's a good reason to go to Danville, personally. read more
