The food took an hour to come out.. there was really nobody else in the cafe but us. My Fresca was half foam. We didn't get any water til we asked for it even tho our drinks were empty. I got this asada dish that looked like it would be real good but was not tender, kind of dry. And veggies were undercooked. But I will say the tostada was perfect. And the fish tacos were good as well. The appetizer sampler wasn't great. Cooked well but just something was missing. I think the incredibly long wait for the food kind of made it just disappointing.

Don't let this unassuming little restaurant fool you. They make a delicious, perfectly executed breakfast meal. I got the huevos con chorizo and my friend got an avocado and bacon omelette. And they make their own tortillas from scratch. All perfectly made. Highly recommend!

Quiet little corner spot with some amazing and flavorful Mexican and American food. I tried the pancakes which were amazing and filling. The omelette is a must as well with a lot of cheese and bacon. You can tell it's made with love Will be back because the service is quick, there's not a long wait, and most importantly the food is wonderful!

This is hands down some of the best Mexican food I've had in a while! It's a small hole in the wall but the food has BIG flavor. The service is really good but it's all about the food here. I ordered for pickup so there was some confusion on my enchiladas verdes and I ended up with all veggie instead of chicken but when I tell you those were the best enchiladas I think I've had in years!! I've been thinking about them a lot since I finished my last bite. lol I will absolutely be back to this hidden local gem!

We had a lovely brunch at Magas Cafe. Parking was a breeze in front of the restaurant and we were seated immediately. There were a few other couples there when we arrived. It truly is a hidden gem as others have mentioned. Our food was tasty, fresh, and reasonably priced. I enjoyed my mole chicken, but my husband's cheese enchiladas were fabulous! We are definitely adding Magas into our regular rotation.

First time at Magas cafe. We were near the area and found this place here on Yelp. It's a cute lil restaurant tucked in a corner, small parking space but lucky for us there was only one person dinning in. The place is very clean and inviting. At first it felt hot inside but then the AC kicked in which was nice. The waitress was nice and attentive. The food selection is great you have your Mexican dish as well as American dishes. We had the machacado and chilaquiles and it was delicious. The kid chicken tenders are made in house, not your frozen tenders that was a plus. With that being said we did wait a while for the food even though we were the only ones at the time there, but the food was fresh. The pricing is pretty fair. I definitely recommend, just make sure you have time to chill and relax.

After a few months closure to repair their roof, Magas is back open! Despite living down the street for the past 6 years, I only recently visited. The food is solid, diner food and very reasonably priced. They have everything you'd expect but not a lot that you wouldn't. Corn tortillas are homemade but not the flower. Portion sizes are pretty sizable. Nice and easy bfast or lunch spot- not too crowded. They have a parking lot out front. No frills but does the trick.

We love Maga's. It's a neighborhood cafe with a menu so diverse, you'll find Tex-Mex and Mexican favorites (spicy chicken enchiladas, flautas, fajita salad, gorditas estilo san luis, chicken mole, chile relleno), Mediterranean options like Greek salad, kabob, hummus platter; and other homestyle favorites, like chicken fried chicken, fettuccine alfredo, grilled salmon, artichoke dip, burgers, stuffed eggplant, and a lot of other veggie options. Normally when a menu is that diverse, the food is mediocre, but we've been pleased with the many items selected there. And everything's made to order, so don't dine there in a rush. My go-tos that I can not get away from - as much as I want to try other items on the menu - are the spicy chicken enchiladas, tostadas, migas, and eggs bennie. I believe it's woman-owned - it's all women in the kitchen working really hard, and quiet honestly looking tired from being on their feet all day. We always tip way over 20-25% because the food is really inexpensive. It's also BYOB. And they got rid of the outdoor seating to - what looks like - expand their kitchen and upgrade the restrooms. It's also very kid- and family-friendly with booster chairs and kiddie foods (like chicken tendies).

When I first saw the menu, I didn't know what it was. Mexican or American. Also don't have salsa verde. Disappointed with that. I ask for milk for my coffee. The waitress forgot about it and went about doing other things. They don't even offer chips when you first sit. The waitress was focused on just one table. Thinking that table deserved better service. Maybe she thought that the table would give her a better tip that our table. The lemonade taste to much like the zest of the lemon. Will not be coming here again. Biscuits and gravy are ok, about the same as whataburger. I wish they would've let me know that the barbacoa was borrego (lamb). The machacado was ok. They need to get a better cook. The place is small not bad. But also not great.

Im not sure how this place has a near 5 star review because it was not good at all. The chips were dusty tasting and the salsa super watery. Then the appetizer sampler was literally the same cheese in different forms. It all tasted the same, except the calamari of course. We ordered cheese enchiladas and the green enchiladas. The cheese enchiladas were literally cheddar cheese with cheddar cheese on top and had no flavor. The green enchiladas had a bit more flavor, but the chicken fajita chunks made it a weird texture. The side of refried beans tasted like they just boiled and refried dry, no lard or oil. They also didn't have any flavor. The grilled veggies were literally frozen steamed veggies. The rice was nothing impressive, also lacked flavor. We literally couldn't even eat out entrees. It was that bad. I do have to say the service was good. One waitress for the whole place. The ambiance, there was none. It was a mixture of random art. Do I recommend it, no. Save your money for other great places in the neighborhood. Bill was $46, definitely not worth it.

Maga's looks like is not a restaurant from the outside but it actually is a pretty good place to eat . The ambiance is calm there was low music playing but no people at the moment . The service was great as well server was very attentive. The only reason for 4 stars and not 5 is due to food temperature some was cold but I think because they let it sit a little to long before being served , the flavor was great I wouldn't recommend the French toast that's my least favorite pancakes were way better . Overall food was great recommend you try it out . The omelette was the best with the fresh avocado.

Was in the area and hungry for an early dinner. Based on the menu and the interior, this spot definitely seems more of a breakfast spot. French toast, chilaquiles and what seems to be a pastry counter are things I noted. It also kind of gives coffee shop vibes with scattered artwork across the walls. Our server was attentive and took our orders - tostada plate with mexican rice and borracho beans and the guacamole grilled chicken torta. I will say, if you're looking for Mexican or Tex-mex food, this cafe is more Tex than Mex. Lots of options on the menu like burgers and kabobs for people looking for that. For the tostada plate, the veggies on top were very fresh but a little heavy on cilantro (my own personal aversion, so not docking them on it) but were great with the salsa from the chips. the torta was ...... more like a deli shop sandwich. Don't get me wrong, the flavor was good. But I guess I wasn't expecting a baguette like bun. Chips and salsa passed the vibe check - the first thing I always look at. Bathrooms were clean. I'll be back for breakfast - overall, great portions for the price. Definitely worth the bang for your buck.

Warm, cozy atmosphere with excellent service. Our waitress made excellent recommendations and the food tasted like it was homemade. I had the chilaquiles and added fresh queso cotija as a side to add on top. The prices were reasonable although I would say the portions are a bit small. Coffee was freshly brewed, would come back again.

There are not enough stars available. We had lunch midafternoon and found every part of our meal extraordinary. The service was also good. The salsa was special. Both our meals had subtle and delightful flavors including mix vegetables which are so often bland, here cooked exactly right and with good flavor. Highly recommend. read more

A total hole in the wall, but don't let outside appearances fool you.. they are cooking up some tasty meals in this place! The building is connected to a tire shop next door, and the parking lot is not too terribly big.. its definitely easy to pass up. Upon arrival, I was greeted by the hostess/waitress who seats you immediately. I was waiting on my fiancé & son to show up, so I ordered a Diet Coke and water for myself. The chips & salsa took a little bit to come out, I'm not sure if they heat them up before serving or if they were just busy in the kitchen.. but the salsa was definitely freshly made. It was warm (which some people don't like, but I do!) and the chips were fresh. The salsa needed a little something.. I added some salt to it and it was delicious with just the right amount of spice. I also ordered a queso, which was absolutely delicious! My son and fiancé liked the queso as well. I ordered the Mexican salad, my fiancé ordered a couple of steak tacos with cilantro on them. He said they were tasty, I didn't get to eat a whole lot of my salad before I had to leave to go back to work but what I did get to eat (and later ate as leftovers) was very good! It had roasted corn and cactus in it. Overall, I will definitely be back when we're in the area again! read more

The food is okay but there's an issue when it come with paying. We come with a group of 6, the lady in black-frame glasses charged us with total then one of them pay half in cash and we pay other half in card. We went back because the receipt somehow look so off. She showed us the original receipt then she told us how much the other pay in cash. She continues to argue with us. She then ask them to pay more, she refuse to correct the receipt or show us the right amount we pay. I know it's confusing, we only see original receipt and the other receipt she divide in half that I pay with my card. I had to go back to take pictures of all the receipts and called my bank because I'm not sure if she overcharges us . read more

This restaurant is amazing for this up and coming area!! The food is fresh & service is fast and friendly. I highly recommend the soup and salad, ESPECIALLY if Maga's soup of the day is zucchini soup. It doesn't end there - Maga's serves up breakfast too! They have benedicts on the weekend & menudo on Saturdays! You have kids?? No problem, they have a kids menu that serves fresh fruit with a variety of kids entrees at the perfect price point! Seriously, go here!!! Fresh food, at a low price. The only thing that would make this place perfect would be wine, beer or BYOB. If Maga's could incorporate that and still keep it low key and family friendly, I think that would draw more people in. Either way, I will continue to be a regular! Love me some Maga's! read more

Eh.... that's all I really have to say. We found Maga's on Yelp because we were at UH for a function. Since I grew up in the East End, I'm all for hidden gems in "da hood". For me it wasn't all that. My husband order the hamburger with cheese, he said it was ok. The burger had a good taste, cooked well done, and the bun made the buttered burger buns made it good. I on the other hand had the chicken fajita enchiladas with mexican rice and veggies. First off I actually ordered 1 chicken, 1 beef, and 1 cheese...I ended up getting all 3 chicken fajita enchiladas. Let's talk sauce...I expected a nice chili sauce rich with flavors...what I got was a bland sauce probably from a can. There was so much cheese on the enchiladas...that it over powered everything. Will we ever come back...nope, but at least we gave a local eatery income. read more

Friendly, quaint little spot next to the tire shop impresses! I'm developing my local staples and this is one of them! Delicious food with a minimal menu that shows aesthetic interest in plating. Bring a friend for conversation or relax alone. If lonely, talk to one of the friendly staff. The place is simply comfortable. Flautas are intoxicatingly good and the brownie dessert is sinful. First time at Maga's for lunch. Really good chicken flautas, chips and salsa. Also tried the cabbage topping off my son-in-law's taco dinner plate. It was delicious. I'll be coming back. Reasonable pricing. Service was great but we also went after the lunch hour rush and wasn't busy. read more

It's ok the salsa is missing something maybe cilantro would help? It has a gentle heat but needs a little flavor. I had the taco dinner the nice part you get to pick your sides. I still got rice and beans, go figure... beans were good, the rice was ok and there wasn't much of it. The tacos were good, one on corn the other flour both nice flavor. Come support these East End treasures give them a chance to grow. read more

Came here for breakfast but they had already stopped serving it, so we had to settle for lunch. The food was fresh and hot, and the service was ok, but we aren't big fans of Mexican food, so keep that in mind. The decor is charming and cozy inside, but if you blink you might drive right past the nondescript converted former gas station that shares a parking lot with a tire shop. If your looking for fancy, keep driving, but if you want a hot meal at a decent price, you should check it out. read more

On the corner of Polk and Dumble sits this quaint eatery. Maga's Restaurant is very much welcomed in the East End! There is a tire shop that sits on the Dumble side, but don't let that fool you. Entrance to this deliciousness is on the Polk side facing a gas station. Limited parking. Quick and excellent service! Definitely a gem for the East End. I was shocked to discover this cute little cafe was located in the East End of Houston. Being a native of the city, I had never popped in here and I'm glad I did. A nice cafe with cool colors, smells good, and a friendly staff. It wasn't really busy when I was there, so I got the food pretty quick. To start, I had some delicious orange juice. This might've been the best orange juice I've had in my life; freshly made and was sweet. For breakfast, I had the simple French toast with berries and cream. This French toast was cooked well, tasted delicious with their good syrup, and the berries were a good add on. This beats IHOP or anybody else's French toast! They also have good sections on omelettes, eggs, and other breakfast meals. And there's also a good variety of sandwiches on their menu; I couldn't believe the menu was this large. I am going to bring a few friends or family next time we have the opportunity to enjoy some breakfast. This part of Houston is really getting its gentrification back on from about 30 years ago. A lot of these small businesses will probably take over soon, and I was glad I stopped in this little cafe. Parking can be a mess, however, as the lot is small. Getting there early for a good breakfast will probably be the solution. read more

I tried this place with a couple of girlfriends at the suggestion of one of them. It's super close to my home and thought why not! I ordered a single Gordita as an appetizer and the crispy flautas as a main dish. All in all, the service was attentive and fast but I felt the food was lacking in flavor. You have a choice of 2 sides with the main dish so I chose Mexican rice and refried black beans. They were edible, just kind of flavorless. The place was cute but I don't think I'll be going back. read more

These are hands down the best chicken enchiladas I've had in Houston. They are light, homemade and packed with flavor! Both my husband and I ordered the spicy verde chicken enchiladas and ate every bite. The charro beans (I forgot the special name) are incredible too! We loved the service and the place has an authentic vibe to it. Can't wait to come back! read more

Went to this little hidden gem for the first time. We had breakfast and service was excellent. Servers checked on us about every 5 minutes or so. I had the huevos rancheros. My wife had the avocado omelet. My oldest son had the chilaquiles and he had them add some shredded chicken. My youngest son had the pork chops and eggs. Everything was delicious except the potatoes needed to be cooked a little more. This is why I could only give them 4 stars. I would still go back and recommend this place. read more

So delicious, food comes out quick and it's not many people inside which I love. My friends and I found this spot on a late morning on a busy Sunday. We were trying to find some places to have brunch and every other place was packed to the brim. We came to Maga's Cafe and it was nice and quiet, the food was so delicious and the staff is very kind. This little cafe is such a happy little spot on the corner of Dumble and Polk. I have ordered the fish taco plate twice now (with corn tortillas for gluten free!) So delicious and the inside of the cafe makes me happy. Definitely recommend! read more

It's not like often I give a 4/5 star but when it's deserved i have to shout. Do not let the unassuming store from fool you, this place is GREAT! I had the burrito sobanera (sp?) and it was fantastic! Filled with chicken AND beef fajita, beans, rice, cheese, and drizzled with their wonderful habanero sauce...and you still get 2 sides. I couldn't eat but half, very filling. Even the chips, salsa, and tea were very good. I will 100% be back. read more

From the outside, I'm not going to lie, it looked a little worse for wear and I was hesitant to go in with my girlfriend. Thankfully we both were curious and wanted to try a new place and didn't let the outside stop us. Inside the place is extremely nice and clean and very homey. But the star quality is their food. The food was outstanding and extremely fresh. Usually after eating at a restaurant I feel greasy and disgusting but the quality of the food here made me feel the exact opposite. My baby girl got the veggie tacos cause she's vegetarian and you can very clearly tell they put in a lot of thought in their vegetarian options. Usually places focus solely on their meatier and more costly entrees and forget about their other options but this place is not that. They STUFFED the tacos with an extremely diverse and tasty bunch of veggies, and they were delicious. My chicken tostada was also delicious and tasted extremely fresh. Give this place some love! Been going here for years and love their food. Huevos rancheros tacos and pancakes are my go to. Business is slow at the moment so it's kind of a great time to go there to eat as there are very few to no customers. read more

First time to try this place and we were not disappointed! The mexican food was very authentic and very fresh! I had the fish tacos ~ Yummy! My sis had the 3 cheese enchiladas ~ Yummy! The bacharoe beans the best! Oh, and homemade oatmeal cookies. Thank you guys, keep up the great work! read more

The food at the restaurant was tasty, but unfortunately, our experience with the waitress left something to be desired. From the moment we arrived, she seemed to be in a rush, causing some miscommunications with our orders that had to be repeated multiple times. Her energy felt hurried, which made us feel slightly uncomfortable. Additionally, she would leave our table in the midst of conversations, which we found a bit impolite. While we understand she was busy, it would have been more appropriate for her to ensure our needs were met. With that said, we believe this establishment has great potential if they focus on training their staff and consider hiring more personnel. This is my new favorite place to eat! Why? I live in the East End and looking for FRESH (as in salad/ veggies) combined with black beans and delicious food. Maga's has it all. I can't wait to go back and try something else on the menu! Please be patient as this restaurant is new and it might take a little while for food to come out of the kitchen. I promise you that it's worth the wait. On her menu, Maga (owner) sez that she has been a cook at many different restaurants and this is her brave attempt to open her own kitchen.
