Came on a Martini Monday - got the Lemon Drop. The lemon is tart and fruity but without the sugary flavor usually added - they use a sugar rim so you can adjust the sweetness to your liking. Excellent choice. The mushroom appetizer is seasoned perfectly, with just a hint of spice on the backend. It is perfectly paired with focaccia bread to soak up the sauce. I had the month's special Lobster ravioli. The sauce was a great balance of tomato and creamy flavors, but a nitpick is that within the ravioli the cheese slightly overpowered the lobster. The staff were quick, friendly, and attentive. The ambiance is quite nice with soft, warm lighting and an interesting and fun mix of textures and colors. The wall of TVs above the bar unfortunately do break the ambiance to some extent, but they're easy to ignore. I have now added Madri to my short list of downtown Redlands go-to restaurants! read more

Loved this place. It's very elegant. Great for date nights. We are here around 4:30pm on a Monday. Not busy at all. Our waiter was very friendly and gave recommendations when asked. I loved my food and drink option. The Dolce Agave tasted like a sweet lime drink. My Penne Vodka al Fungi was very savory with excellent flavor. I loved the mushrooms in them. We came in on a Thursday night to check out Madri and were genuinely pleasantly surprised--especially by the remodel. The space now feels like an upscale Italian sports-bar-meets-farmhouse vibe, and it really works for downtown Redlands. We were seated right away just before the dinner rush, and the hostess kindly accommodated our request to sit along the wall. It ended up being the perfect spot because we could see the entire restaurant and all of the TVs behind the bar. The bar area is especially pretty--modern,and inviting without feeling chaotic. The TVs were playing a mix of sports, Nickelodeon, and even a movie channel. We started with the bruschetta and I loved that the tomatoes were served on the side so the crostini didn't get soggy--such a thoughtful touch. My husband ordered the mushroom risotto and the flavor was spectacular--rich and comforting. I had the lasagna, which wasn't overhyped but was still very enjoyable. Went here for a date night and there wasn't a wait. We're seated in the bar area. Had a nice vibe. We ordered the bruschetta and the calamari. These were pretty average. We also ordered the meatballs and the mushroom risotto. Ok so I think they forgot about our food. The food came out about 35 mins later and was cold as hell. The mushrooms were maybe oyster mushrooms and they were so tough and connected all at the base. You couldn't cut them apart. It a was like a whole mushroom bush! We didn't complain and ate around the mushroom tree and just ate the outside of the meatball, then left. I think this place is cute and hope our time was a fluke, but we won't be back. The service was good, our waiter was patient and nice, however, his "personality" wouldn't fit everyone, some would find him "too direct." We came into Madri before a movie and wanted to check out this spot since we we're frequent visitors of Romanos. Madri is absolutely gorgeous as you walk in. The renovations really help light up this spot and make it very welcoming. We sat at the bar as we didn't have much time and ordered off the happy hour menu. Everything was priced perfectly and the sizes were happy hour sized so don't expect a full meal at the happy hour price. We started with some bruschetta and fried mozzarella. The fried mozzarella was delicious. Seasoned perfectly and loaded with hot mozzarella. The bruschetta was okay nothing too special. Could use some garlic. We also ordered the fettuccine off the happy hour menu was a perfect quick bite, small portion but very flavorful and satisfying. This cute little restaurant is easy to find if you're walking along Orange Street. My only negative is parking can be rather hard to find. My girlfriend and I decided to have lunch here and I'm glad she chose this place. We were greeted right away and shown to our table as we made reservations. The menu is pretty self explanatory as each dish explains what's in it. We ordered the goat cheese and honey dip to start off with. OMG, the dip was so delicious. We each ordered a pasta and shared. We ordered the penned vodka al fungi and linguine alla carbonara with shrimp. Both pasta dishes were delicious also. Both very filling and flavorful. My group of 6 (4 adults, 2 kids) stopped by this restaurant to have Italian food for dinner after spending the day at the Live Oak farm for the Halloween/Fall Festival activities. We had high hopes/expectations for this restaurant since the reviews for place were quite positive. The biggest positive was our experience with our server. She was very attentive the entire time we were there, but the food itself was mediocre at best. We started off with the calamari appetizer, but it wasn't that great. The calamari inside didn't taste fresh and had a very fishy odor that is not typical for higher quality calamari appetizers. The pasta was alright because the sauce was tasty, but our penne was definitely overcooked and lacked that al dente texture from a higher quality Italian restaurant. In fact, my party semi-joked that it tasted like pasta from Olive Garden. The next disappointment was the pizza (both pizzas). The sauce and cheese were alright, but the crust was downright tough to eat. I likened it toasted cardboard because it was quite hard and dry. My wife mentioned it was similar to eating frozen pizza that was microwaved. My group visited New York for a week back in the spring this year, so we do acknowledge that our standards for good Italian food have risen significantly, but I think this restaurant was a genuine disappointment overall. Amazing environment and venue! All of the wine is perfectly selected, and the Italian modern menu has a diverse selection of entrées. The sound system is pristine and has separate sections for each. Madri's is fantastic! I've been looking for new Italian options in the area. The drinks and food is superb. The Sunset Sour, a twist on a classic whiskey sour offers Aperol in place of whiskey and is frothed with egg whites. A delicious beverage that encompasses Italian cuisine and artistic expression. The Italiano, a twist on an Old Fashioned is equally as delicious. The whipped goat cheese and pistachio appetizer is perfect for a little sweet, yet bold beginner. I accompanied it with the savory insalata caprese that was refreshing and a palate cleanser for the various flavors of the meal. Their tiramisu is the best tiramisu I have ever had. I am a tiramisu snob as it's my favorite dessert. It's difficult to choose a star of the show, but this dessert was front and center. The interior is casual, yet upscale. The service is top notch. We arrived here for lunch on a weekday shortly after it opened and we're seated in a small booth. I enjoyed the atmosphere. It has a romantic feel to it, definitely suitable for a date. I cannot rave enough about the goat cheese, pistachio dip. It was simply my favorite thing that I ate. It was a beautiful appetizer that you simply cannot get anywhere else. They also had the usual suspects such as bruschetta, caprese, and calamari, which I'll try at a different time. My husband had the soup of the day which was a tomato bisque. Honestly, I wasn't expecting much, but it was extremely tasty, definitely not just a throw away. We enjoyed our cocktails and look forward to returning, as there were several dishes that we were interested in trying. One thing I will note is the lack of side dishes, just about every dish came with either oven, roasted potatoes or mashed potatoes and broccolini. Tonight my husband and I went to Madri in Redlands, the Italian restaurant that took over the old Romano's location. I've been once before for a work lunch, food was really good, service was awful. so we decided to give it another try. This time, service was solid. Our waitress checked in regularly and was attentive. We started with cocktails: a limoncello spritz and an Italiano (similar to an old fashioned). Unfortunately, neither impressed. The limoncello spritz honestly tasted a bit like dish soap. We finished them and switched to beers. For appetizers, we shared the bruschetta. It was fine...not terrible, not great. A little over-sauced, and the crostini were very toasted. My husband ordered the "minestrone" (and I use that term loosely). It was more of a vegetable soup than a true minestrone, but it was tasty, so no complaints there. For entrées, I ordered the chicken piccata, the same dish I had last time. It was good, though noticeably better on my previous visit. My husband ordered the fettuccine capriccioso, and unfortunately, it was inedible. The chicken was rubbery, like it had been microwaved, and the sauce had an odd, slightly fishy taste. Just really bad. When we mentioned it to the waitress, her response was... not great. She said, "Sorry you don't like it, that's my favorite dish on the menu." This wasn't a case of personal preference as my husband eats just about anything. The dish was objectively off. The entrée was sent back, but no manager ever came by to check in. While the item was removed from the bill, I was surprised to see it noted as "guest didn't like it," which felt dismissive given the issue. I understand kitchens have off nights, and since my previous experience was much better, I'm chalking this up to that. My friend spoke to the server and didn't get too far. She then spoke to the manager whom took off only $5. It should have been $15 for her mistake, she ordered a side and was charged for an entree dish. We also found out they would only give three of us a bill, then the other three their bills. I understand to split six would take longer. The problem was they only let one of the three people use their credit card. I don't carry cash or a checkbook. I only use my credit card. The other people next to me wanted to use her credit card, she said I could Venmo her. Then I had to contact my husband to do that since he has a Venmo acct. It was really a hassle. Everyone should be able to have used their credit card if they wanted. It doesn't take any longer than paying cash especially if they have to give change or writing a check. read more

The salad also included brown, oxidized romaine ends, indicating poor prep rotation. My cousin's vodka penne contained a hard, pea-sized charred object that was not identifiable as any ingredient in the dish. This is a basic quality-control concern. My wife's risotto was overly salty, gummy in texture, and lacked a Parmesan finish. The mushrooms were chewy, and the texture suggested it had been held and reheated rather than properly finished to order. Any one of these issues would be disappointing. Experiencing all of them in a single meal points to systemic kitchen problems, not an isolated mistake. We stopped eating and will not be returning. Redlands is seriously lacking in Italian food, and I'm happy for the new stylish MADRI to take a shot at it. I was going to give this place time to settle in before visiting but the spot I intended to go was too noisy. I grew up in an Italian family in the Northeast -- and it's the only cuisine I can and will pull rank on. Boston and New York cherish traditional Italian food, but California has taught me to embrace new ideas and new experiences. As the now closed Isabella's demonstrated, Redlands struggles with Italian cuisine. I fear most people in California simply don't know good from bad, and so everything is 'okay' or 'nice' when perhaps not really. Two stars on Yelp equals "Could've been better" and that's correct. Of course all places could be better, but you'll see there was enough here to warrant this rating. AMBIANCE If you love giant TVs in a restaurant, you'll love this. Me? It's what turns me off about Finneys. I appreciate that a Sports bar inside an Italian restaurant might promote a fun lunch crowd, but I believe there should be curtains that obscure that half of the downstairs from the other half. If a major game happens -- sure, open the curtains. Maybe. Otherwise Italian restaurants are never known as sports bars. Now, to be fair, ambiance in Italian restaurants is tricky. Old school places with red leather seats and framed pictures of gangsters and celebrities is out, but creating a space barren of anything Italian (the new trend) is questionable too. We actually liked that Madri was brightened up with softer colors and cozy seating, even though the grass in one part of the ceiling -- yes, ceiling -- seems silly instead of inspired. Loved the tile at the entry. So we like what they started, but if you either hung that curtain or simply removed half of the TVs deeper into the restaurant -- it would go a long way to adding the missing Italian romance instead of Budweiser and pharmaceutical ads. SERVICE The place was rather empty but somehow we got poor service. Had to get up twice to get help with issues. One issue was we were given a choice of chips or a side salad but not told that salad came with a $2 up-charge. The owner politely removed it. Also -- My partner in crime's salad was served on a fake newspaper page. It was explained as a 'decoration' but she didn't even see it at first. This means you could be eating a salad and discovering there's some sort of paper inside it. Yuck. This hidden paper under the salad defies all logic, and when discovered -- the salad should have been promptly replaced with a new one and an apology. She could have consumed some paper. FOOD Leaving that otherwise tasty salad to the side, the Eggplant Parm sandwich was pure fusion. Now, is MADRI obliged to serve the thick breaded saucy gooey Eggplant Parm available only on Fridays at SAVERINOS? No. But if you're going to get all modern and 'gourmet', the replacement ought to justify it's existence. What came out was a thin measly slice of bread eggplant on each half of the sandwich. A stack of two is the norm, and the arugula and bread and cheese didn't warrant recommending this to others. On my side of the table I had a hit with the Chicken Piccata. Piccata is either bad or great; there's no in between. Thankfully this was great. I felt the portion of chicken was possibly a tad small, but it was made up for a generous pile of broccolini and small potatoes that were sea-salty but roasted to perfection. VERDICT I know these are crazy early days for this restaurant, but even adjusting for newness I fear that once again Redlands will be barren of quality Italian dining. I don't care about 'the game' -- I care if food is the passion at MADRI. By the way, we spoke with a person in charge who heard a lot of this. If I owned a restaurant and was told to my face the Eggplant Parm was skimpy and the paper under the salad was a bad idea, I'd have refunded that meal on the spot. That didn't happen. I tried to get ITALIA BELLA in Yucaipa to move to Redlands but that just ain't happening yet. So if real Italian food is your priority over 'watching the game', and you can live with 'sub shop' ambiance, the food and service make up for the difference at BELLA. read more

I have been a big fan of The State and since they share a common co-owner I have been eagerly awaiting the opportunity to dine here. I went alone early on Saturday evening and sat at the bar. The ambience is lovely and my bartender, Danny, was very attentive and kind. Because I was alone I only tried one dish, the Penne Al Gorgonzola (with chicken added). I was a huge fan of the Gorgonzola pasta at Citrone (another Redlands favorite) but that dish is no longer on their menu. I was excited to try another version. To be honest, I won't order this dish again. The pros- the pasta was perfectly cooked, there were many chunks of Gorgonzola, a decent portion of pine nuts, and the sauce was rich and creamy. The cons- the flavor of the sauce overwhelming reminded me of a chicken pot pie rather than Gorgonzola. Though there were bites that were very much Gorgonzola, I couldn't shake the chicken flavor. That leads me to the grilled chicken I added. It was clearly cooked well in advanced and warmed up to add to this dish as many pieces were very dry. If you're in Redlands and looking for Italian food this spot is a nice choice. Food quality is good. The scenery is modern and stylish. The manager was very welcoming and accommodating. My only complaint was that there was a gentleman( who I assume was the bartender or maybe another staff member???)that was so loud it was hard to enjoy our meal and talk to each other. Also, the chicken was hard to swallow, very tough and dry! Had to wash it down with water. The tortellini with rosa cream sauce was the star of the show! 10/10.
