I stopped by this place to try it out for the first time a couple of weeks ago with my 1 year old. We tried the mole enchiladas and she had the rice and beans off my plate. She really enjoyed watching the train go by every once in a while. I then went with my husband about a week after for Taco Tuesday. Their beef taco was delicious as well as the quesabirria plate. We also had the opportunity to try their house taco made of octopus which was done really well. Again my daughter loved watching the train go by and saying hi to everyone who passed by our table. The reason for only 3 stars out of 5 is because we had mentioned to our server that my daughter would just be sharing the rice and beans side dish with me. As the beans and rice came out first I proceeded to give her some thinking they were the same as the mole plate I had previously. I was VERY Wrong..my daughter started to yell which led me to look further into the food and noticed SERRANO peppers mixed in. I wish the server had mentioned this to me or that their menu states that it is spicy. I understand it's a new restaurant but that's what made me rate it less and then when I mentioned it to the manager they still proceeded to charge me for it. La Popular is a new gem in Redlands. We didn't have a reservation, and wish we did. It was packed! The free chips & salsa are solid, but if it's your first time spring for the salsa flight -- it's worth a try! We got the corn taco plate (for a vegetarian) and the ribeye taco plate. Both were excellent! Their margaritas are a solid 4.5/5, very delicious. The desserts were great, too. We loved the churros, and the butter cake was very good. It's visually appealing inside, and if you're a fan of what feels like a DJ set that is perpetually 125 BPM you'll like the music, too. Literally, the beat keeps going forever at 125 BPM. We checked. It's not too distracting, just... unique. Angel was a great server, and the rest of the staff actually looks like they care, too. What a nice thing to find! Seems to be well managed. We let a bunch of folks know about this place and will be back for another date night. My one qualm was that the butter cake was too soft/cakey. I was ruined by trying the Mastro's butter cake, and nothing has ever come close. If La Popular could get the texture right on it, it would be great. Parking: Park in the parking structure for the train station. It's free, and the restaurant is right over the train tracks (with an easy path to cross). Pro-tip: You are right across the way from the Redlands Public Market, and a short walk from State Street. You can park once and enjoy a night in Redlands walking: RPM, Board Game Paradise, A La Minute, etc. are all walkable. read more

I am so pleasantly surprised! I went in thinking it may be another overpriced Mexican restaurant in the Redlands area, but I would highly recommend as a fun downtown spot. My friend and I arrived around 12:30 on a Sunday and was given a 20-25 min wait. When it got to 40 mins, we went inside to check on the status of our table and then were immediately seated. (This is where they lost a star. Hosts have to be more accurate with wait times.) After seating though, our experience was great. Drinks are original and well balanced. Food is flavorful and well portioned for the price. Brunch menu is fairly extensive. Lots of options. I'm definitely excited to return for their lunch specials/dinner menu. My daughter picked this restaurant for four family members to celebrate their birthdays. It opened 2 months ago. It's beautiful, nice bar, dining area inside and a great patio outside with misters. I didn't expect great service because they are so new. They did have a lot of servers. They did a good job with being new and every table was taken. We went on a Saturday night and there was a singer, he was good. It does get loud inside, having a table of 6 or more can be hard to hear people talk. This is exactly the kind of restaurant our area has been missing! From the moment you walk in, you can tell a lot of thought went into the design. The décor is fresh, modern, and inviting with fun details like tropical wallpaper, natural textures, and even a disco ball that gives the space so much personality. It's a beautiful place to enjoy a meal. I've been back several times now, and the service has been consistently friendly and attentive. As for the food, I highly recommend the tacos! I've tried the tinga, corn, and grilled shrimp tacos, and the corn and grilled shrimp are definitely my favorites. I also stopped by for brunch and had the breakfast burrito, which was absolutely delicious. For drinks, I sampled the Spirit-Free Paloma and the Sonora Sunrise Spritz. The Spritz was my favorite, light, refreshing, and full of flavor. I also tried the Golazo Tropical Margarita. It was a little sweeter than I usually prefer, but if you enjoy guava, you'll probably love it since that flavor really shines through. One more bonus: parking is incredibly convenient. There's a nearby parking structure with plenty of spaces, making it easy to stop in without worrying about finding parking. Overall, this is a fantastic addition to the area. So we walked in, we were greeted. The ambience inside is nice and welcoming. They have indoor and outdoor seating. They have TVs overlooking the bar, I don't know if they have TVs outside. We sat at the bar and ordered food and drinks. The food was excellent. We ordered the Ahi tuna tostada, which was so flavorful. I will definitely order this again and we also ordered the tri-tip tacos, the meat was so tender and flavorful again this is something I will definitely order again. The only downfall was the tacos was a combo so it did come with rice and beans which I can't not brag about due to the fact that they did not have a whole lot of flavor. A little disappointing. The overall experience was great all the bartenders at the bar, especially Kim, she's a bartender there, we're all great and very attentive. I will definitely come here again. But the food is very not bad! I'd recommend anything Costra style -- it comes with grilled cheese on the outside. They have a really good mix of indulgent and fresh options. Try the Baja shrimp for something lighter; it's pretty standard, you can't go wrong there. For something more indulgent, try the quesabirria plate: braised short rib with a ton of cheese, served with consommé for dipping. For a vegetarian option, try the charro beans -- they have a bit of an Indian feel, a little spicy and very layered. Prices are also very reasonable here. read more

Amazing! A group of us had lunch today at we were all very impressed, Great ambiance and modern design. We had chips, salsa and guacamole to start. Salsa and guacamole were delicious. I had the Ribeye tacos and the ribeye was cooked perfectly, tender and flavorful and loved the pickled onions. My other friends had carnitas and mahi tacos and said they were really good as well. New spot in Redlands next to the new Eureka location. Walking in we had a 15 minute wait but two chairs inside for you to avoid the heat. Many other people came in after us and had to wait outside in the heat as there is really no waiting area inside so get there early. The greeters and servers were great and worth 5 stars. I had the LP Margarita which was pretty good. I also had the Ribeye taco, chicken tinga taco and carnitas taco. Tacos were ok and could use a little more meat for a happy hour price of $4.25. They serve with one corn tortilla which is ok for the meat tacos but not so much for the tinga. The juice caused the tortilla to break apart. They might want to think about doubling tortillas for the chicken. The salsa flight was actually a very good choice to get different types of salsas. The vibe inside is also pretty good with music playing in the background and people just have a great time. They offer a tequila club much like Eurekas whiskey club that gets you discounts and monthly tequila bottle at $85 a month. We elected not to become members. read more

My only complaint is at 6:30 the music was so loud you could not hear the conversation across the table. It was like a night club, a little ridiculous. La Popular is such a cute, trendy Mexican restaurant that I believe has the potential to become very popular. As we entered we were greeted by a warm welcome and smile by the host who quickly sat us. The environment is fun and upbeat with a great open floor plan. The biggest down side is they leave ALL the doors open on hot summer days so the restaurant is very very hot!! You'd be better off sitting outside with the misters. After we got sat we waited about 10 minutes to get greeted by a server who asked us if we've been helped out yet. We let her know we have not and she proceeded to take our order. It seems the staff is still learning the menu as they didn't have answers to a lot of questions and didn't know what the happy hour consisted of. We ordered Grande LP margaritas off the happy hour menu along with the queso fundido and guacamole. Both appetizers were fantastic! The margaritas tasted more like pure lime than a well balanced margarita. After our appetizers we ordered Ribeye tacos, Carnitas, and Chicken tinga to really try the variety. The carnitas was our favorite with ribeye coming next. We wouldn't order the chicken tinga again. I think the ribeye tacos could do without the pico as it was mostly just tomato and took away from the flavors of everything else. Lastly we ordered the churros which were delicious! Definitely would order again as they were hot and crispy. As the server dropped off our check we noticed that we hadn't been charged for the happy hour priced margaritas and churros. She told us that the Grande margaritas aren't on happy hour. When the happy hour clearly states they are. So after some back and forth she took the receipt to her manager. She brought pack the receipt with the corrected priced margaritas, but added another churros anywho it took about 20 mins just to close out. It took 3 separate times to get the correct check. It was just frustrating as we were wanting to leave. We attended their soft opening and were seated directly at a table for two ( note that you may need to make space on the smaller tables for all of the great food you are going to enjoy ) Jesus was our delightful waiter . He was communicative , polite and had a lot of great insights on the menu and offerings for their soft opening . We started with their salsa sampler and cheese dip. Great idea of serving different tortillas with the dip! I ordered the combo with two fish tacos and the suggested enchilada served with amazing beans and rice .My husband ordered the combo fajitas . Do not sleep on the steak fajitas . Cooked perfectly , served perfectly and you are pretty much able to cut it with just a fork it was so tender. Really excellent . The service was excellent, and the staff was friendly and attentive. The restaurant also has a thoughtful story behind it, and I appreciated the welcoming atmosphere they've created. They offer aguas frescas in a more modern style, which was still enjoyable, and there is a nice variety of both non-alcoholic and alcoholic drinks, along with regular soft drinks. Adding an alcoholic version of the aguas frescas could be a great option. That said, the food was disappointing. It was fairly bland and did not have the authentic Mexican flavor I was expecting, especially given the restaurant's emphasis on its Mexican roots. The biggest issue, however, was the timing: the food took a long time to arrive, and some items were served cold.
