The Overland Bar in Redlands is one of the best spots in Southern California's Inland Empire to enjoy delicious food, perfectly prepared cocktails, and mood music played live on vinyl in a beautiful setting. It's a perfect place for a date or a night out with friends or family. The focal point of the main dining room is the bar, which faces the restaurant's entrance. Meticulously designed with a nostalgic feel, the bar features blonde wood shelves holding hundreds of vinyl records, carefully curated design objects, and a DJ booth neatly tucked into a corner next to the bar. The beer taps are elegantly minimalist, and every detail in the bar--for example, the old-fashioned glass syrup bottles--seems planned to give a nod to history (specifically the late 19th century, when Redlands was founded). The main dining room offers plenty of comfortable seating choices, including a long bar along the center of the room. The patio is spacious and well kept. All of the spaces inside and out have music piped in from the bar. There are two restrooms just off the patio, and these are well-maintained. On busy nights, patrons can enjoy a drink in a standing bar area just off the patio. I love that the Overland provides a choice of setting depending on the kind of night you're planning. A romantic date? Get a reservation to sit inside, and it feels intimate. Just hanging out? The bar is fun as the mixologists make excellent drinks and friendly conversation. Sitting at the bar after 7 PM, you can watch the DJs spin the platters. If you have a larger group or just like to eat alfresco, the patio is perfect. The menu offers a really nice variety of drinks, including the pricier craft cocktails, more classic, moderately priced beverages, nonalcoholic drinks, and all sorts of beer and wine. The food menu is solid, with plenty of appetizers, salads, entrées, and a dessert. The real star is the tacos! These are very moderately priced at seven dollars apiece, and all three varieties are delicious! There is a potato taco, a beef taco, and pork chili Verde taco. I highly recommend these! The green salsa they provide is extremely mild, but they do have a variety of hot sauces on hand. It's worth mentioning that even a humble plate of tacos is served on nice ceramic dishes, along with good flatware and napkins.The espresso martini cheesecake is creamy and delicious, and the portion is really generous. The staff seem to enjoy working at the Overland. The servers work hard to make sure your order is to your liking, and food comes out pretty fast. There's a good sense of teamwork among them. The staff is also accommodating about seating or any special requests. We've been there on a busy Friday night, and on a Sunday evening and late night. The Overland is always at least moderately busy, so reservations are strongly recommended. The city of Redlands should be very proud of this establishment. Go and have fun! read more

My girlfriends and I decided to have a girls' night here because we'd been wanting to try this place for a while. We made reservations for four, and as soon as we arrived, we were seated right away, which was a great start. Unfortunately, I noticed a few cleanliness issues almost immediately. The tables were pretty dusty, and the glass water cups we were given still had food residue on them. One even had what looked like a lipstick mark on the rim. I let our waitress know, and she apologized and quickly brought us new glasses. Those were still dirty as well, with (food residue) so I asked if she could replace them again. After the third attempt, the glasses finally came out spotless. It seemed like there may have been an issue with the dishwasher filter?, but I really appreciated how kind and apologetic our waitress was throughout the entire situation. The drinks were good overall. I ordered a couple of nonalcoholic drinks, and they were refreshing and flavorful. We also tried the cheese fries and the fried onion, and both were really tasty. Overall, I'd give this place a 6/10. The rough start with the cleanliness definitely affected the experience, but the service helped make up for it. The staff genuinely seemed to care about making things right, and that went a long way. I absolutely loved the vibe and the music, and I think this place has a lot of potential. My friends and I were looking for a good time and somehow stumbled across this gem--and let me tell you, The Overland did not disappoint! From the moment we walked in, the place was a whole vibe. One of the best restaurants in Redlands. Overland exceeds expectations every time. Get the devil eggs. That's all I'll say for that.... We come here specifically for steak and frites. The steak is always seasoned perfectly with just the right amount of salt and the frites are always crispy served with fresh garlic aioli it hits every single time. Pairs great with a lime margarita on the rocks. Service has always been great their staff really pays attention to detail and is quick and very helpful. The Overland truly hits the spot after work. The music, strong drinks, and tasty fries always put me in a good mood. They offer an ever changing menu of food and drinks. While I have enjoyed all of their cocktails, the food quality can be inconsistent. The ingredients are clearly high quality, but the flavors do not always come together. I have tried several of their rotating salads and seafood dishes, and the fish tends to lean toward stronger, slightly musty flavors. The greens are fresh, but the vinaigrette is overly acidic and lacks balance from oil or spices. The Brussels sprouts shared a similar fate, being rather bland besides a light coating of balsamic vinegar. The burger was taller than it was wide and tasted like a fairly standard offering, though I was amused by the oversized piece of lettuce. The fries, however, were outstanding. They were golden brown with a fluffy interior and coated in Indian spices. The curry ketchup elevated them even further. The drinks are served in tall glasses and are quite potent. Each cocktail packs a punch, and I especially enjoy their house specials, which bring noticeable spice, heat, and bite. The flavors are more unique than those of a typical mule or margarita. Nice Tuesday night dinner with my husband after a long day of work. Our first time here. The outside looks like a historic building. I really like that it's small and cozy. The interior has a nice vibe with cool jazzy and r&b music. The lighting was just right as you would expect from a cool bar and the disco ball was a nice touch. I really like the huge selection of records on the back wall behind the bar and DJ. The service was excellent. They were very helpful in answering questions with the menu and they came by several times to check on our order. I also requested that my espresso martini be not too strong and it came out perfect. It had salted caramel flavor and cocoa so yummy! The steak was medium rare as ordered and it had a nice outer crust and well seasoned. The risotto was made with pearled farro so very healthy but also very tasty with lots of shrimp. But my favorite of the 3 dishes we ordered would have to be the house burger. It is simply melt in your mouth delicious with juicy grass fed beef, soft brioche buns, buttered lettuce, juicy riped tomatoes, & melted sharp cheddar in a light secret sauce. So I normally dislike reviews that take one experience and apply it to all possible experiences. Do you know what I mean? If someone felt they were treated rudely by a waitress, that doesn't mean everyone that walks in will be treated the same way by that or any member of the staff. Yet here I am writing one of those reviews, because the complete lack of management was appalling. And I had no real interpersonal issue with anybody, so what happened to me could happen to you. We invited a neighbor out to the fun new place in town called THE OVERLAND -- that we'd been dying to try. We tried to get reservations early Friday because it was a Friday night. But their website appeared broken. When you clicked MAKE RESERVATIONS, nothing happened. We even called but got no call backs. We show up at 6PM and get THE BIG SIGH. "Yeah, umm... SIGH... we're having a big party on the patio and our reservations are booked for the night... SIGH." I'm highlighting the SIGHS because the staff isn't supposed to SIGH at us at how hectic their life is. It's OUR place to SIGH at the staff for failing to properly warn us the place was already booked for the night. So they sit us at a long high top where you're kind of sharing your table with 12 other people. Luckily a sweet patron volunteered to move so that we could sit across from our neighbor and create the illusion of an actual table. Soon the attentive staff did show up to take a drink order, but with a SIGH and a grimace our wait person then broke the news that because of the large party out on the patio -- there would be no food for at least an hour. We should have been told that at the door, right? As to not raise a fuss we ordered drinks and they were pretty good. The music was nice. The thing is -- -- restaurants that have an artsy fancy hipster "vibe" twist pride themselves on not being chain restaurants. I celebrate that and I get that. But with this territory often comes this odd feeling that they have no clue how to run a restaurant. "We're trying our best" with a SIGH doesn't cut it after being in business more than a few months. All 'soft openings' must come to end, people. Some Pro Tips -- 1. If your website cannot take any additional reservations, it should indicate as much. To us, it simply appeared broken. You've been open for three years and this isn't fixed YET? 2. At the door, we needed to be told there's a big function and it might be better to come back another night. Or, even more professional -- 3. -- either close the entire restaurant for a 'Private Function' or 4. -- have additional kitchen staff ready to handle both the restaurant AND the large party. Sorry folks, but you made one lousy first impression. I'm at a loss to understand why there should be a second. UPDATE: By stating 'a complete lack of management', I include the fact this review has been posted for a month with absolutely no response from management. No, I'm not trying to get anything free, but a little understanding and apology could have gone a long away. read more

Honestly, I think this place is overrated. I was originally excited to try this "Christmas Bar", but drinks are meh, ambiance is loud and crowded, and service is really inattentive even when they're not busy. The first time I came here I also didn't know that they require reservations. So even though the entire hour and a half me and my date were at Overland, and there were at least ten empty tables plus at least four empty bar seats, they wouldn't sit us. So we just had to awkwardly stand at this crowded side place with all the other people without a reservation. I had also originally wanted to order some food, but with the tiny awkward space, I waited until we went to the next bar. I just got two Proseccos, which for being the only sparkling wine on the menu, they could def get a better quality of wine - just not the best. My date ordered two cocktails and really wasn't a fan of either of them - saying they were really watered down with more of a juice taste than anything - and their cocktails are pretty pricey for being the inland empire - like DC and LA prices. Though I didn't try them as I don't like liquor. It was hard to put in another order for a drink both times me and my date tried to - the server just kept passing us even when we flagged them. I ended up just going to the bar since I was being ignored, but my date waited for the server (I got mine before her lol). Been again just because someone wanted to try it, and again same experience of being ignored and meh drinks. Overall, not a place I'd willingly come back to again. Ugh seriously I could not get enough of this spot while in-town for work. The Overland overtakes a historic building in downtown Redlands and is smack dab on the main street next to the train station and market. Once you walk in through the main doors (during the holiday season) you are whisked into a Winter wonderland as it is fully decorated and turned into a photo-worthy spot. From themed cocktails to tasty bites, you can spend a bit here. I enjoyed their signature cocktails and am happy to report they have a happy hour here to imbibe. My colleague went with their shrimp banh mi which had a nice spicy kick and I just had to enjoy their truffle cheese fries with gouda. Damn were those fries delicious. The ambiance is dimly lit and makes for a great spot to catch up. I highly recommend The Overland for anyone looking for a neat spot for a cocktail and bite. Well, your experience varies on when you go. We just went in the evening, arriving 6:30 pm Tuesday to be specific. The good? Happy hour prices, and the drinks are good. The less good? Afternoon bartender is lackluster and not great at service. We sat at the bar this time, and it looks cool. Turntable, huge speakers, and like a thousand records. There's a live DJ spinning those records too, but off the wall modern jazz that seemed like his jam only. We were ignored most of the hour we were there. I would say "hipster", but not sure who cares that much about modern jazz. Anyway, happy hour prices aside, not sure I'll be returning. The 10/10 item was the Beets by Nay appetizer salad. Perfection, no notes, would get again and again. In fact, there were so many spiced pecans leftover from this salad, that I added them to the classic wedge salad which really elevated that dish. The shrimp cocktail isn't my typical order but the shrimp was fresh tasting and suave had good flavor. The Brussels sprouts was a slight miss. Cooked to perfection, but the balsamic glaze was poured with too heavy a hand which made it hard to eat. The truffle cheese fries were the second best item we ordered. Would get again. Biggest let down of the night were the deviled eggs. Maybe with salt and pepper they would have been substantially improved. I'm not sure how but they were incredibly bland, as if you were just eating a hard boiled egg plain. The Overland is fantastic. It exceeded my expectations. It is so quaint, the vibe is awesome and the decor of the entire bar was pretty cool! Popped in before dinner for a cocktail. We ordered two of the After Carnival cocktails. They were delicious! They were served in cans which was very cute. Not too sweet but still had the fruity taste I loved. Very delicious. Will definitely be returning and trying out some appetizers and main dishes. read more
