Really wanted to love and support this place as a Riverside native and avid collector. I used to spend a lot of time (and money) every month at Mad Platter (RIP), so I was excited when this shop opened. I stopped into Rat Hole pretty frequently in the early days, when a lot of the inventory hadn't been priced yet. At the time, I gave the higher prices the benefit of the doubt since the store was new and items were being priced on the spot. Six years later, I'll still pop in about once a year out of sheer curiosity, but I'm quickly reminded why I don't shop here regularly. The owner is friendly, and they do have a great selection of shirts and interesting items, but I just can't justify the prices on the vinyl and CDs. I completely understand inflation, the need to cover overhead, and turn a profit, and if their model is working for them, more power to them. That said, I'd personally rather make the drive out to LA and shop at places like Fingerprints, Amoeba, Permanent...etc, where I've consistently found better pricing and selection. read more

Great service from Dan in the front; I had an issue with a small chip in a new record I purchased that wasn't readily apparent until I'd opened it. I came back a few days later with the receipt and Dan was able to exchange it for a new copy when I came in, no problem. All staff are very friendly and knowledgeable, and they have an excellent selection of records available. The only small caveat I have is that the hours listed online are not accurate. They are not open Mondays and Tuesdays. This was not a problem for me since I live fairly close by, but I think it would be helpful for other customers if the online hours reflected this. Regardless, I'm very happy with the service I received and I'll be coming back. read more

Terrible service, I got a huge lot of electronic records most of which were not priced. I asked how much the records were since they didn't have prices. The man working told me he had to price them out individually this a a huge red Flag when digging. This guy quoted me $13.99 PER RECORD regardless of the condition. I asked him where he was getting his pricing and he told me he couldn't tell me. LOL what?! I walked out immediately. Great place to buy, sell, or trade all things music. The workers are helpful and always available when needed. I love the set up and decorations from floor to ceiling. Reminiscent of music shops of the 80's. Everything new and dare I say old can be found here. Prices seem to be comparable to online shopping and other outlets that sell similar products. You could spend hours here digging through the crates and crates of LPs, CDs, etc. You can find some pretty great merchandise as well, some never before seen items. read more

A rad little hole in the wall record shop where you can also find some cool posters, shirts, patches and pin buttons. I came with my daughter and had to bring my stroller in, so I would recommend to leave the stroller behind... it's pretty tight in there.... But they had some great music genres and found the record I was looking for. They buy records there as well. Upon checking out, the man (maybe the owner) was awesome, very sociable and he shared some cool stories. You'll find the rat there up at the front in the hole (gift card) haha. Ask to see the rat. Staff is not friendly. Went 2 times and was never greeted when coming in or leaving. My first time here, my boyfriend said one of the employees was watching us the whole time. My second time as I was looking through the records an employee was standing in a corner watching and then proceeded to ask me "you're not mixing these are you." What a ridiculous question when all I was doing was looking through the records. Have never felt welcomed or comfortable here, and their stuff is overpriced. Will not be coming back. read more

Truly a hidden gem. Blink and you will miss this place. Located behind the Shoeteria, next to an appliance store. New and used sections as well as CDs and tapes. Owner and employees are super nice and helpful, and they have SHOP CATS! Great place to pick up band tees, patches, stickers and buttons. Picked up a bunch of buttons and a limited Senses Fail album. I inherited a sizable record collection from an old friend who sold her house to move out of state. After searching for possible buyers, I found the Rat Hole in Riverside. I called Chris, the owner, and we made an appointment to meet on a Saturday afternoon. I took a truck load of albums in five boxes of 100 records. Despite the busy rush of customers, Chris took the time between interruptions to go through them all. We settled on a good deal. Chris knows his business, he is very informative and gives great customer service. BTW: The Rat Hole interior alone is an eye-opening throw back to the 1960-70s period. The place should be listed as one of the coolest places to visit in Riverside. I say this as a person who has been to nearly every state in the USA, and several foreign countries. No matter where you're coming from The Rat Hole is SO WORTH the pilgrimage to Riverside. The staff was helpful, knowledgeable and down to earth. The shop's tucked away in a mini-commercial-type spot. The record selection is SPECTACULAR and every record we picked up was, for the most part, a keeper (from gospel to nick cave to 1950s Disney vinyl). I recommend this spot to my music-loving peeps. Passed by here last week while getting lunch in the shopping center next door and finally made it in here to do some window shopping. Met the owner Chris and we chatted for a bit. His eclectic shop will thrill your metal, punk, goth tendencies with wares of physical media music, black t-shirts, buttons and patches. I see a few reviews here on Yelp that state the owner is overcharging but you're welcome not to buy if you really feel this way. In today's e-commerce model, it's rare to see this kind of merchandise offered in a brick and mortar store that isn't your corporate Hot Topic. They have a lot of punk/metal and some miscellaneous, some rarities, a small oldies/soul section and a bunch of band stickers, patches, buttons, t-shirts. They are pricey but considering that there realistically ain't nothing else close by this actually might be a go to spot to have. I picked up a new Ralphi Pagan album, A rockabilly compilation which I haven't seen elsewhere. And a used Sun records pressing of Jerry Lee Lewis. The used record was in good shape which is a good thing because it lets me know they know what to look for. My used record had very little (it was almost unnoticeable) popping. They had a huge 45 rpm section that looks very promising unfortunately I did not have time to dig through it read more

First time here. Place isn't too hard to find, you have to drive towards the back of the entrance to find it. Record store is small inside, you have to go around the store to get to records if there are people in the way (not a big deal). They are organized in regards to artists. They have their CDs in a different section along with DVDs. They have a plethora of pins, posters, t-shirts and posters to choose from. The only thing I had an issue with was that I found an awesome 45" record for $2.99, there were 2 of the same so I took both. When I went to pay, the guy says "this isn't $2.99". Mind you, the tag said $2.99. He then proceeds and tells me that they are $9.99 and that they still have a lot of stuff they haven't changed the prices on. Five stars from the sky light the way to The Rat Hole. I appreciate what Chris and Augie are setting up in Riverside. I dug through several sections of The Rat Hole. I found some quality records in most every genre. They were all priced considerately. Chris shared some anecdotes with me about record collecting and the unfortunate closure of Groovers in Riverside. Gave me some good tips, and offered me a bag for my vinyl too. Will scurry back to The Rat Hole soon. Update: I have scurried back. Chris has done a bang up job converting this space into a fun and rewarding environment. The genre areas are filled up. There are tons of 45s now. Long story short, Chris is an absolute gem and if more people were like him, the world would have far fewer problems. I had an expensive copy of a record i bought on RSD, and there were quite a few problems with it as i slowly came to find out. I drove out from quite a ways, and the receipt was $96.66. He gave me an even hundred and said to consider it pitching in for gas money. What a guy. A diamond in the rough. Such a kind and calm demeanor. I honestly am considering visiting this place multiple times a year even though i live far away just to support his business. He GENUINELY cares about the hobby, and isnt in it just to make a buck. As for the shop itself, no other compares in selection. Its almost overwhelming, but he has countless dividers for countless artists. His CD selection is massive to boot. Not to mention the vibe. i used to think this was a good record store until my boyfriend, our friend, and his brother,who are all returning PAYING customers, we're accused for stealing an ac/dc cd.. he claimed to have video recording of us "stealing" but said we'd have to wait a week to see it. his story was all over the place of who stole it and how and made zero sense. after we left the store we searched for the receipt and we found it saying purchase verified on may 25. next time before you accuse customers who have repeatedly shopped there even including after your ac/dc cd was "stolen" make sure to have a solid story that actually makes sense and some actual evidence. his story was first that our friend walked out with two cds, then it changed to one cd, then it changed to my boyfriends brother pocketing the cd and walking out, then it changed AGAIN to my boyfriend finding the cd and handing it to his brother who then gave it to our friend and then walked out with it.. i'm not sure which one it really is maybe the "video evidence" will let us know.. or the receipt anyways i'm not upset with this at all really since his cd and vinyl prices were always all over the place too just like his story, i just i think it should be noted how he treats his customers read more

Really cool little shop! It reminds me of my teen years hanging out at "Off the record" in SD, the glory days of my youth!!
