Not sure about this spot. I like hole in the wall, mom and pop shops but this place is kinda pricey for what we got. We ordered the rolls, shrimp tomyum and spicy beef and a small order of rice cause none of the items we ordered came with it, which added up to $34. The soup was delicious, you could taste the lemongrass and gave a decent amount of shrimp. But not even a side of rice to go with it? Then there was the steak, which in my opinion was a little too fatty but my partner there with me liked it. Also, didn't come with rice, just some super small side salad. If you can call it that. I haven't tried too much Thai food in this area but MaDee is has never done me wrong. I've been there a few times to get food for the family and everyone is always happy. We always get the pad see ew and chicken satay at every Thai restaurant and they didn't disappoint. Just a heads up: I think there's only one cook and they get plenty of orders! Picked up a spicy fried rice with fried tofu and a fried egg. Asked them to make as spicy as they can. Just cause most places dont ever really bring the heat. They actually have the little thai chili. Most will have some sauce. Few will have crushed thai chili. Even fewer have the whole fresh chili. Was very happy when i took a bite and that heat hit me. I've learned from my experience to just always show up a little later. Me and my partner always get the Drunken Noodles, Pineapple Fried Rice, House Rolls (skinny egg rolls with a sweet dipping sauce), and a soup (tom yum is my favorite). Everything was less than $40. We are big eaters but we always have some leftovers for the next day. Warninf: the drunken noodles are SPICY! There's this Thai Kitchen in Costa Mesa that goes by the name of MaDee. It's small unassuming but has a lot of heart in its dishes. It is a fast casual cafe setting so despite the modern industrial feel, you will still experience the full spectrum of Thai food here. The flavors are of Northern Thai so you get a lot more of the Burmese, Chinese and Laotian influences from that region. My friend Drew M. introduced me to this place because he knows that I love all things spicy. We tried the larb, Kao Soi, and the chow mein. Everything was cooked to order so we waited a few minutes for our order to come out. The larb was deconstructed and really disappointing. I have had better and although it's a fresh dish that is light (think lettuce wraps), I was not impressed by the flavors. I was looking for that combination of sweet, sour, savory, and spice. It was lacking. However, I did love the spiciness of the chow mein and the Kao Soi was so amazing. The Kao Soi is crispy noodles in a yellow curry soup. It's so good. I would definitely order this again. The spice was perfect and the coconut flavor very pronounced. They do not skimp on spice if you ask for it. I actually stopped ordering this dish since been disappointed by so many places,most places made Pad See Ew too sweet and sour which I really don't like. The yellow curry is way too spicy for me to handle. The flavor is rich though. I probably can eat one serving by adding my own rice for another 4-5 meals. Unlike other places ask how spicy you want when taking order, so if you can't handle the spiciness, be sure to tell them. I think I just found my "Go to" Thai place! Costa Mesa, well done! We ordered the pad thai with chicken, chicken satay, and house egg rolls. Oh, and of course Thai ice tea! The food is to die for! The pad thai wasn't oily and had the right amount of sauce. The egg rolls weren't soggy or oily which is just great! Cause who likes to eat oil? Um, no one! They make the food fresh and as you order. I came to see my GF who lives right around the corner from this place. We were craving Thai. But with my experiences with Thai food in OC, I wasn't walking in with high hopes. Beef Pad See Eew - $8 - 4 Stars Beef, Flat Noodles, Egg, Chinese Broccoli - The first signs for me that this dish is not good would be the color of the noodles and dish. I mean coming from the wok, I should be a dark "Char-ish" looking. Not all places can get this right. The secret is in their work...if it's seasoned well, the wok will turn this dish into a BEAUTIFUL colored dish. Thank gosh this dish came out with the right colors, the beef was cooked just right, the noodles had the right color and the sauce was just the right thickness. I was relieved. Finally, I dive in and the flavors were DELISH. Thumbs up for getting this dish right. :D 02. Chicken Panang Curry - $8 - 3 Stars Chicken, Bell Peppers and Basil - This was my friend's dish. It was okay, nothing special but I normally don't order Curry since curry is so basic but she loves it. The spiciness was not there. The creaminess of the sauce was a little watery. Hence, I gave them half STAR for having this. :D LOCATION - Tiny...I mean really TINY place in a small plaza. It's at the end of the plaza. PARKING - Don't worry, there should be plenty. SERVICE - Awesome, friendly and very attentive to everything. If you even share a eye with one of the staff, they will ask if you need anything. Chicken pork and tofu are the most affordable and 1 dollar more for beef, 2 dollars more for shrimp based. Okay portion, and okay taste. Not like Wow, but still one of the best choices in Costa Mesa. You must ask for the To-go silverware when you order a to-go. The cashier won't put fork, nor chopsticks, nor napkins, nada! until you ask. Pad Thai: good enough with pork. Not so much different than other places. Pat se ew: ok with less veggie portion than average. Cooked well. As far as quality, I would say better than pad Thai compared to other restaurants'. Crab fried rice: not that great. I don't get why there are reviews loving this fried rice. It's the most expensive fried rice sold here and I definitely don't see a reason to order again. We ordered up front and then sat down for our pad thai and papaya salad. There was not a single person there, but we waited a good 15-20 minutes for our food. Tables were dirty and the booths were old-looking. When we finally got our food, they were on plastic plates!!! We also ordered two sides of sticky rice and they handed us the rice in a plastic bag (???). Food was okay but it was nothing special. They had some chili sauce and peppers on the counter of the cashier that customers are allowed to help themselves to. The taste was super authentic and delicious, however two things really made me not to return to MaDee: 1. One of the cook wasn't wearing a mask and another had it on but wasn't covering the nose. You decide what is important to you but a cook with no mask is a deal-breaker for me. 2. The squid in Spicy Squid dish was severely under cooked.
