The first time was last winter when I had to move my belongings from the basement and bedroom of a house I was renting in Sun Prairie to a storage locker in Madison. That was in the middle of winter last year. This winter, I used them twice to move everything from that locker to my apartment in Madison. I needed them to do the move in two separate trips. Both times Brenda quoted me a reasonable price. I am continually amazed at how quickly and safely they move my property regardless of the weather. Matt and Ryan moved some of my stuff including a mahogany headboard on 12-4-25. On 1-14-26, Matt Ryan and Maverick moved the rest of my stuff to my apartment. I hate giving local businesses bad reviews. I reached out via email to one of the owners, Brenda about my experience (not to ask for compensation,) but just to share my poor experience with the company. It has been a week and I haven't heard a peep back from her, so I feel like I need to inform potential customers. My husband and I hired MC Moving to pack up and move from our old house to new house. Communication leading up to moving day was fantastic! The movers came to pack everything up the day before we moved. They were all very nice and professional. Once moving day came, they were right on time and got started right away. I wasn't standing there supervising but it seemed like things were going smoothly. After they moved my husband's large desk, they said they heard a snap, but didn't investigate what had happened. Once they left, we realized that the desk was ripped IN HALF! Totally damaged to the point of having to glue, drill and tape it to make it semi functional. Aside from the desk being completely broken, they left HUGE gouges in our brand new walls and scratched up our bannister. This alone, (although unfortunate,) doesn't necessarily warrant a two star review. Accidents happen, and I'm SURE my husband and I would have done much more damage had we tried to move ourselves. However, when we went back to our old house, we realized that two of our three bathrooms were left completely untouched! They didn't pack up or move ANY of it! We paid A LOT of money ($2,400) based on what furniture we had and HOW MANY ROOMS we had to pack up, and so being shorted on that is BEYOND frustrating. We have to move all of it ourselves now when we paid this company over 2k to do it for us. All I wanted was acknowledgment or an apology from the owner after I emailed her, but heard crickets. That is so very unprofessional in my opinion, I wish we would have chosen a different service, as I suggest anyone reading this do. read more

Mad City Movers was the worst moving experience I have ever had. For some perspective, I was a military kid and a veteran and moved around many times in my childhood and in my adult life. I've worked with several good companies in my adult life, but wanted to work with a local company as a small way to support the economy. These are the ways MCM made our move more stressful than regular. They didn't put floor covering down on the major walkways- only at the entrance to the house. They forgot the handles to our refrigerator at the first house and forgot to install them at the second house. They left 2 small dents in our brand new refrigerator. They didn't put our sectional together, and they didn't want to wait for us to see if our sectional couch worked after moving it. They stripped screws in one bed by torquing it. Then they complained about it when we asked them to wait until we were sure everything still worked. They told us we were "taking too much time." They complained about how much stuff we had and didn't end up taking all of our things. We will actually have to hire another mover to move the rest of our things. I would never use them again and I would not recommend them to anyone. read more

This company is very unprofessional. I had a move out date at the end of the month needing to be out by noon on the day I hired Mad City Movers. When the movers arrived a gentleman by the name Randy looked at my belongings and told me he could not move it all. He was very rude and I am not sure why anyone would want him to represent their company. He took what he wanted and I had to scramble to rent a truck and finish moving on my own. They were over two hours late with no phone call saying they were delayed. Plus one box of my daughters items is missing. Emailed and called several times with no response back!! Mad City Moving did a fantastic job! My husband and I moved from Madison to Chicago, and we decided to try the full service rather than getting a Uhaul and hiring movers. We're so happy we did. Brenda was responsive and flexible with setting everything up, which was great since our closing date was originally up in the air. It was nice having that piece of mind that our belongings were taken care of, all we had to do was drive ourselves to our new home. Our movers, Shane and Jake were exceptional! They were on time, pleasant, and got the job done quickly. They also made sure to wear masks the entire time which was important given the pandemic. Used Madison Movers for our move from Madison to McFarland. Had them pack up our old house 1st . Loaded up 2 trucks on Saturday so we could completely clean the old house. Closed on the new house on Monday they had the 2 trucks emptied in about 3 hours. Rates were comparable to their competitors. I have used Mad City in the past and not had a problem but recently I was not impressed with a job they did for me. I had them clear out a storage unit and pack it into a Uhaul for me. The guys were nice enough but they packed it poorly. I knew it wasn't done right but thought well maybe it will be fine. Unpacked the Uhaul to find several broken items that can't be replaced. I'm mad at myself for not making them redo it. I sent an email to the company stating what happened and taking responsibility but stating I wouldn't use them again because they are supposed to be experts but the movers clearly didn't know how to load a truck. Didn't even get a response. I guess they don't want repeat business or care about having a decent reputation. No worries, there are plenty of other movers to pick from. read more

Worst customer service...ever. I just completed a portion of my move with Mad City moving. The movers themselves were nice enough, though they weren't exactly professionals. The way they stacked things in my storage unit was awful and completely without forethought. That was forgivable, because they were as courteous as they could be. The customer service from Brenda the owner was awful conversely. It was clear to me after my move that they were willing to upcharge me for work they weren't doing, but weren't actually interested in doing the work I was paying them for. I wish I had read the yelp reviews before booking. Please listen to the other reviewers who tell you that they overbook. When I called to book my move, Brenda gave me an over the phone quote. She estimated it could take 3-4 hours based on my answers to 4-5 questions. She then used those questions to generate my moving list. Simple enough. Except, I told her I was moving an entire 1100 sq. Ft house, sans appliances so there would be various miscellaneous boxes, etc. Well, when the movers arrived, they in turn only expected to move like 10 things. They felt she should have come out and evaluated before providing the quote. Why she didn't is beyond me. The only explanation I have for it is that they're just lazy and have very unethical business practices. When they arrived, I wanted to add a few more large items not on the list and several boxes. They all agreed we still only had 3-4 hours worth of things to move (the time we'd contracted for), but we'd added a few other items to the list. Even though they could move them in the slotted time, Brenda wouldn't let them. And while we figured it out, she had them go on break, costing us even more time. If I was trying to get something I wasn't paying for, I'd understand. In the end, I only wanted to have my items moved and pay for the time they worked AND what they'd reserved for me. It seemed illogical to me until I realized that even though she was charging me for 3-4 hours, she'd estimated that they be done before that and was basically trying to get me to pay for work they weren't doing. When I called to try to work something out, she couldn't have been more rude. Instead of trying to work with me, she immediately went on a tirade of a rant over how she's been doing this for 15 years and she knows how to schedule movers. Obviously not! The co-owner offered to reschedule me for the following day, but I barely wanted to give them the business I did that day. I'd haul things myself before I ever paid them a dime to so much as move dirt for me. I've never been more rudely treated. My guess, they don't rely on repeat customers so they could care less whether they offend one person. Do yourself a favor, go with more professional movers. This company needs to find another hobby. From their movers to the owners, they are the least professional moving company I have ever hired. We hired You Move Me to handle the remainder of the move. They were wonderful! Courteous, efficient, professional from beginning to end. And, we weren't alone in thinking the movers from Mad City were horrible. Absolutely atrocious experience. Movers did not follow instructions on which things to move out, leading to the apartment throwing these belongings out. When we called and tried to resolve, management was extremely disrespectful and not helpful in any manner, and actually said that "we should have been there," when we could not travel due to the pandemic. We moved at the end of October. We were quoted $780, they charged us $1150 at the end of the day. They said we had WAY more than we said we did...we didn't. The two men complained the whole time and damaged my son's crib and our coffee table. When we called to reconcile the damage, they send out an old man recovering from pneumonia. Brenda told us they don't replace your item if you don't have a receipt from time of purchase and even then they fix things, they don't replace. So if they move for someone who's had a piece of furniture for years, they expect a receipt?? They know most people don't save that and I'm sure they count on it. When the man came to "fix" the damage, we told him DO NOT paint the gouge on the crib because babies are known to chew on cribs when they get older and can stand. We did not want him to put his mouth on paint. He painted it. Brenda said she'd give us back part of the difference between our quote and the price we ACTUALLY paid. Still no check. Not good, I definitely won't be using these guys again. First, one of the movers did nothing but complain about the size of my furniture. Maybe I'm mistaken, but I think moving large couches is their job. Then once they did get it outside, they completely destroyed my bookcase. They claim that it can be put back together, but the pieces are torn apart and scratched all over the place, so I'm not going to be keeping it. On top of it all, they were here for 40 minutes from when they pulled in to my parking lot to when they left, but they charged me for 90 minutes, which was meant to cover driving between my house and their office. I'm not sure where the office is, but 25 minutes of drive time both ways when the entire move didn't take much longer than that seems like overkill. From the phone call I received that they were leaving to the time they pulled in to my parking lot was definitely under 10 minutes. read more

Unprofessional. I am currently sitting here while these movers are here listening to them swear up a storm while there's kids in the house, complain about how twisty and turny the house is.... Terrible experience. These guys brought a truck too small for the job, so I still had to haul boxes on my own in my car back and forth after these guys were done. I got charged about $850 (including tip) for a 6 hour move. The guys that showed up worked hard, but clearly management needs improvement. I've moved several times before with 2 men and a truck and they charge more but at least my back was not sore after those moves. read more

My sister hired Mad City for her move to Madison 8 years ago, and hired them again for her recent move across town. I came to help out, and WOW was I impressed! Scheduled for 8am, they showed up right on time, 3 guys in a truck. They backed it up to the apartment exit, got a quick walk-through, and started hauling stuff down. They loaded her apartment in an obscenely short amount of time, accepted our offer of drinks for the road, confirmed the next address (her fiance's apartment), and leaped into the truck to head out. His place was similarly smooth -- the guys were professional, courteous ("ma'am" was used quite a bit), and showed great care for what they were moving while hauling a** to get it downstairs and in the truck. No profanity, no phones, no issues. Smoking was done outside, well away from us. When I indicated a few small items that I was going to take in my car, they all but snatched them from me, carried them downstairs, and deposited the items in my backseat. In no time, they had packed the truck to the gills (literally -- they somehow got exactly everything in and then it was crammed full, no more space) and were at the new house to unload. They took direction well and nothing showed any signs of problems from its trip across town. The entire move took from 8am to 12:45pm -- WAY less time than we expected. We had hoped to unpack a few boxes that evening, but we had time for leisurely lunch and plenty of unpacking in the afternoon instead, thanks to Mad City. My sister gave them some giant tips and we sent them on their way. For a Madison move, use Mad City! read more

We hired Mad City to unload our truck, and the movers were fantastic. They unloaded everything incredibly fast, and the rates are definitely competitive. We also appreciated their time flexibility -- we needed them at 6 p.m. on a Saturday night, and it was no problem. The only thing preventing me from giving this a full 5 stars is that the office didn't provide the movers with any information other than our address, so they had some trouble getting ahold of us when they got here (the doorbell isn't set up yet because, obviously, we're just moving in). I had a really bad experience with this company. Movers were rude and owner was worse. She had me in tears. We had a miscommunication about how much we had to move, and rather than handle it professionally, and try to do whatever they could to get us moved, one of the movers screamed at me and then had the owner call me and scream at me some more. The owner told me I should have had a walk through by their sales associate to confirm our load, but the trouble was no one offered that to me, nor told me that was an option. read more

GREAT experience! I read the reviews for all the moving companies in town and none stood out so I crossed my fingers and hoped for the best. I wasn't disappointed. James and James were FAST, on time, finished under the time that was quoted. Placed and moved the furniture where we wanted it...even put our bed together for our first nights sleep! This was the worst moving experience I have ever had. The movers were late, uninformed of the details I gave the owner, so very slow, did not work as a team, took smoke breaks every hour, and one of them called me "babe" or :baby" -even after I asked him to just call me by my name. What should have been a 4-5 hour move; ended up being 8 hours! There was a valuable mirrored cabinet that I had asked nicely to be extra careful with and it arrived broken because the mover used a dolly and a strap that ended up stress fracturing the mirrored panel, The man in charge of repairs and appraisals was uninterested in the asked for pictures and research on the cost of the piece, After 2 months of back and forth, he and the owner decided to give me $150 for a $2000 piece!!! We hired Mad City Moving in June, 2015. We were EXTREMELY impressed. The two man team arrived on time. They were super courteous, friendly and handled all of our items with care. We were impressed with how quick they were too. Since they're paid by the hour, we figured they may end up taking their time with the move, but the guys were RUNNING up the stairs between loads (and this was with 3rd floor apartments at both locations) and finished early. Their estimate was half the price of some of the other moving companies in the area and they even ended up charging LESS than the estimate. Hired Mad city Movers to move me from Middleton to Fort Atkinson. I explained when I hired them that I had a complicated desk (three pieces with attached bookcases). Also explained that I had a platform bed that had to be dismantled. They said no problem. They arrived on time but it was downhill from there. The two guys never introduced themselves. I still don't know their names. They looked at the desk and handed my boyfriend the Allen wrench and asked him if he wanted to take it apart. He did. One guy fussed with my bed forever and accused me of having a special tool to take it apart (I never had any kind of tool and another move had done it alone with no problems). They said the only way they could move it was with three of the pieces still attached and they scratched it. They got it to the new location and it wouldn't fit through the door, so my boyfriend I had them put it in the garage and after they left, we took the frame apart with a set of small pliers. Something in my tool box that wasn't anything special. They also knocked a hole in the wall with some of the boxes and they tried to over charge me by $90. Got offended when I took out my calculator to do the math. I called the office and got no where. They were horrible. Don't hire them. read more

Overcharged me, didn't wrap my furniture or provide floor runners and doorway protection like the contract stated, broke my bookshelf, and would not move my punching bag (even though it was okay'd in the quote I was given). When I complained to management, not only did I get yelled at by the owner, essentially called a liar, and was not given any feedback on if they'd be refunding what they overcharged, I decided to file a complaint with the BBB. Well, that sure got the owner to email me very quickly...yelling at me in all caps, and telling me I was wasting his time. He even had the nerve to call out MY work ethic when he doesn't even know what I do for a living! He demanded photos of me, which I had, and I sent them to him. Then, after a few more emails, he demanded the photos AGAIN all in caps lock. The owners are very rude and threatening, and I will never use them again. Ever. They did not hold up their contractual obligations written out by them, and yet, I'm the one that has to pay more. Still awaiting a response to see how they will accommodate this work, but after siding with their workers, even when photos have been provided, and yet still calling me the liar, if this doesn't get resolved I will definitely have to be taking this further than the BBB. read more

They were almost 20% cheaper than Two Men & A Truck and they're a locally-owned business, so I chose them for our in-town move. They showed up on time in the morning, and they worked quickly and carefully. Since they charge a flat hourly rate I had asked the manager whether I was allowed to help carry boxes out to speed things up and they had no problem with that as long as I stayed out of the truck (2M&AT also allow this). The estimated move time was 6-7 hours and we finished in 4.5. I had zero complaints, tipped the movers well, and would use them again. read more

I used Mad City Movers twice in 2015 and once in early 2016. This is a belated review, but I hope it helps others. My landlord at Lincoln School Apartments paid for these moves as part of of intra-building moves due to remodeling. My main criticism is that the movers were over-booked-- MC Movers did not come out or phone to evaluate the scope of the move. They seemed to under-estimate the job and time...and the actual on-site moving crew tried to do a good job, but really cut corners and left things for us tenants to move. My 3 moves were all badly scoped and done. Other tenants said the same. Perhaps some moves went well...but I would say the front office/scheduling skill or emphasis of MC Movers was too often poor or out to lunch. Their crews took the brunt of being under-staffed with too little time. read more

I hired Mad City moving to move me. The two individuals that moved me were very prompt with arriving and they treated my items better than I expected. I had a very large all glass curio cabinet and they took such great care in moving it as well as putting all the glass shelves back in. They were friendly and worked very efficiently. We moved locally to Madison & itwas a great move! James, Brandon & Steve were the team. Because of the piano I had, 3 movers were needed. I can describe the guys as polite, careful of everything they handled, considerate of both houses--rolling out mats to walk on, saran wrapping things, etc. They didn't take any breaks but were constantly moving even running up the stairs. They worked as an efficient team --each one knowing what to do when. They also carried old mattresses out for us & loaded my car with the old clunker TVs to be recycled. The smiles were abundant & they certainly helped to make a difficult time much easier. The price was very reasonable also. Five stars is not high enough for this crew & company! read more

They have horrible customer! I would not suggest using their services at all! They scuffed up my furniture and it has taken over a month to get my stuff fix, during which time the manager told me" well the movers are only human". They did not wrap up all of my furniture including my matress( which was just thrown into the back of the truck), when i brought this up to the manager she also said" "well the movers are only human" The manager is very immature and rude. I have had to call them numerous times to get an answer. DO NOT USE THEM!!!! Pay the extra money and go with someone else if you want your stuff to get to your new place!!!! read more

We were moving to a new state, and pretty anxious about it due to our last experience with movers. Phil and Dave showed up and did an absolutely amazing job. They were fast, careful, efficient, and friendly. We even had 3 pieces of furniture that weighed over 400 lbs per piece, and they had them wrapped up and moved out within 10 minutes! The next morning, the freight elevator was not working in our new apartment, but they didn't complain, they just got right to work. Hired Mad City Moving to move from Madison to New Glarus. Had a great experience. When I called to get a quote, Brenda sent out an estimator (Harlan) who did a great job asking "is this going?" He noticed things we hadn't even considered like a dehumidifier. Got an estimate later that day with a $200 range from low to high. On moving day the guys got there maybe 10 minutes late. They got right to work and did a fantastic job moving things. My husband and I had stacked some boxes that we planned to move ourselves but they asked if we wanted them moved in the truck so we said sure. I kept packing more boxes as they worked and they took those boxes, too. They also got a huge box on a cart & packed up some loose, odd-shaped items we had stacked along a wall because they were things that didn't fit into a regular box. After arriving at the new house they took a lunch break (provided by us) but then got right back to work. No grumbling when they carried in furniture to the main floor and I had to say "oops, that goes in the basement." All 3 guys (Jay, Julius and John) were courteous and efficient. They had a long 9-hour day but no complaining, at least in our presence. The final price came in right on the mark for the high end of the quote but they moved WAY more boxes than I had estimated when Harlan was there. Reading some of the negative reviews makes it seem like I was dealing with a different company. I would highly recommend them. read more
