This is a review on the lady who helped me in the jewelry dept, what a pleasant lady. I told her exactly what I was looking for and price range, within seconds she pinned down exactly what I believe to be the perfect earrings for my former MIL, plus added a few more jewelry pieces. I did visit and purchase from the perfume dept and initially I was irritated with lack of staff but I did ask and within a minute a lady came from across the way and assisted me. The 2nd floor is also where the bathroom is, I walked into the bathroom and their standing in front of me was a man with no pants, staring right at me while he wiped his ass with a paper towel and smiled at me and walked back into a stall. One year ago, I bought Macy's Egyptian cotton sheets for $180.00. In the last few months they started pilling and just this May, 2025, they became so thin they were almost transparent. ( should have known... most American "Egyptian Cotton" sheets notoriously pill. So, two weeks ago I went back to this Macy's and thought I best select more of a percale sheet. I chose Ralph Lauren cotton sheets, (maybe percale), also for $180. for a queen set. They have been laundered three times and are still scratchy, especially the pillow cases rubbing on my face, I had to put an old pair of cotton pillow cases over the Ralph Lauren ones. This set did not indicate what kind of cotton was used, most likely a short staple, bottom of the line cotton percale. Also, package says fits up to 18" high mattresses, mine is 14" high and they barely fit. This set is going back tomorrow. read more

Imagine this. You are shopping for an area rug and have found it, but the entire store has no one in it to ring you up, let alone answer any questions. You have found your selection and are prepared to spend many hundreds of dollars. You explore the entire 3rd floor for people. No one exists except a sales clerk who is not allowed to ring anyone up in their expansive furniture department and a lady who is stocking shelves. You ask to see a manager. She appears. Though the store opened 50 minutes earlier, she volunteers that for the next two hours no one will work in their furniture department and not even she can allow you to make a purchase. You have just entered The Twilight Zone of Macy's in the Northgate Mall. While I assume that I was on camera somewhere, I felt invisible. We left empty-handed. With service and management like this, Macy's is quickly declining into invisibility. read more

The mens INC section is usually well organized. When you find a purchase, however, there's no employee to be found. Had to go upstairs to women's! WTF?!??, Got here before open. Got to see the employees all take the very front parking places to start their shifts! WTF?!?!? You should all be parking far out in the lot. Those parking places are for customers! Not you. At the men's fragrance counter with absolutely nothing on the counter to try, we waited for ten minutes before looking around for help. The first person we found told us it was not her domain and pointed to another person. Visiting that person we were told in a condescending tone, "I'm busy and can't get to you for a while!" The place was empty of product, empty of service people, and looked unkempt with dirty carpets held together by duct tape. A disgusting spot, inside which I wouldn't take my dog to take a shit. Too much respect for the dog's turd and final resting place. Some FREE advice: 1. Have your lazy employees put the colognes out on the counter so people can try them, test them, and maybe select one to buy, making the wait worthwhile. 2. My husband bought me a perfume box set. I took it back to exchange it with the perfume I wanted. I asked the sales person to show me the perfumes but she kept insisting to do the return first. Then I wanted her to show me the perfume and instead of doing that she told me to go to another sales person because she didn't have the one I wanted. She immediately turned and assisted another customer instead of helping me to order what I wanted from another store. Really Macy's? I returned the item which was about $200. This review only pertains to the mattress department. We were recently shopping for a new mattress and a very friendly salesman assisted us. We took our time testing out different mattresses and he didn't pressure us throughout the process. He answered all of our questions until finally deciding on one. The salesman provided excellent customer service and was very professional which made the whole experience enjoyable and seamless. He made sure we understood all of the delivery details and information we needed to know. On the delivery day everything went smoothly and the guys were fast. They arrived on the earlier end of our window time which was perfect so we didn't have to wait around all morning. I will buy more mattresses in the future from Macy's. Macys Northgate needs to be shut down. It has zero customer service and the place is a damn mess. Ross has better deals and customer service. What interesting is they invested more on undercover security guards than sale staffs. I noticed 5 undercover security guards hiding in corners lurking at people but not one sale staff in sight. After wasting half an hour looking for a sale staff, i finally asked a undercover security guard where can I find help, she replied rudely "just keep walking around and eventually you'll find one." If I can find any positive thing that's come out of this Coronavirus lockdown is that it's given me the chance to do more cooking at home. I'm using pots & pans that I had never used before, and exploring recipes and cookbooks. I'm really getting into expanding my culinary skills. It's become a fun, new hobby. For this reason, I decided to purchase an Instant Pot Duo. I already had a Crock Pot, which was fine and dandy. But now I wanted something that could cook things faster. After doing some research online, I discovered that Macys.com is one of the cheapest places to order this magical appliance. I took advantage of one of their many online sales + used my Macy's card, and I was able to get my Instant Pot delivered to my doorstep for just $90 (that includes shipping/handling). That's at least $30 - $50 cheaper than anything else I could find online (including Amazon). So now I'm cooking away with my Instant Pot like a poor man's Wolfgang Puck. I've made pastas, soups, chicken piccata, salmon & potatoes, you name it! All the recipes can be found online. For Mother's Day, I made an Osso Bucco with Risotto. And it was just as fall-off-the-bone delicious as anything you'd get at an Italian restaurant (if I may say so myself). But again, I have to give Macy's.com a shout-out for making the ordering and delivery of this product so easy and affordable. I've shopped at Macy's stores since I was a teenager. When the Emporium closed at Northgate I was heartbroken but thrilled by the promise of a beautiful Macy's store like the one in San Francisco. It happened and I was a loyal shopper at the San Rafael location when I lived in Marin. Well, it was great while it lasted. I had my first visit in many years and experienced a depressed store that is not much of an anchor for that ghost of a shopping center. The inventory is limited, the layout and displays alternate between discount store and boutique style, and there is a lack of employees who are visible and courteous. I explored the entire store and remembered decades of holiday shopping, the frenzy of their their big sales, shopping for gift registries. What I experienced in the present was a waste of time. The top floor has furniture taking up half the space. The remainder of the area is home goods: towels, bedding, cookware, etc. but no employees in sight in those latter areas. I had a question but couldn't find a soul anywhere. This floor came the closest to the inventory I valued in the past. I recall shopping the second floor ladies department for work, vacation, and dress up clothing. It was also a terrific store for mature women who want standards - leisurewear such as slacks and sweater sets so I'd buy gifts for older relatives. That isn't possible anymore unless they are a plus size. I even witnessed a senior and her daughter flee the store because of a lack of petite options. I realize Kohl's is at the other end of Northgate so they likely went there. I spoke with a clerk who explained the new plan for the shopping center and Macy's rebranding of certain labels. He was the bright spot during my entire time in the store - he was doing stocking in the center of the ladies' department. The worst part of my visit happened on the first floor. You would think you were at Ross, Marshalls or other discount stores by the look of the shoe department. Sample shoes on top of a shelf and boxes upon boxes below. I asked a clerk about orthotic shoes and experienced classism for the first time in years and it was surprising. She kept stating the price of the shoes I was seeking, suggesting they were out of my price range. When I later asked about the Macy's in Corte Madera she reminded me they also have. Nordstroms and higher end retailers. Rude, unnecessary but also expected. She clearly doesn't know how to read her customers and I am considering contacting the Corporate office of this. Seriously rude. The shopping center changed over the years and tried to meet the needs of a changing county. I don't live in Marin but that shouldn't matter. Macy's was a big part of my history but I don't see a place in my future for another painful shopping trip. read more

I went in to do a return, since I was by work and this was close to work. I went in to return but ended up actually wanting an exchange of a perfume I got for Christmas. I went in and found "Tom" he was so helpful and walked me through with all of my options of a return or a exchange. I couldn't decide on what kind of perfume I wanted and Tom helped me decide on what kind of perfume I wanted. Anyways, definitely will be going back to have Tom help me out. The difference between this Macy's and the Corte Madera one is STARK...and I mean STARK. First of all, there is very little Merchandise on the shelf. Second of all, I could not find a sales person in at least 1/2 of the whole Men's floor. Third of all, the one woman and one man I did manage to find- couldn't operate the register. Virginia, the manager of the furniture department, deserves a great review, even though I wasn't able to purchase the item of my interest. What impressed me was she actually called me back -- and I hadn't talked with her. This is an example of good, solid commitment to customer service: even though she didn't know me and she was sure she couldn't help me (because I left a detailed message regarding the piece of furniture), she still called. A shout out to Lynn in the executive office as well for having the patience to take a detailed message -- and for passing it along. It's a twilight zone episode where a bloated dept store of the past somehow appears in 2018, with a few ancient, time traveling, sales people wondering what the hell to do. This is literally the worst Macy's I've ever been to, ever. There is no selection of anything - no dresses, no skirts, no pants. I could only find junior's and plus size sections, and when I asked about the "average" section it was only half a room. Racks were picked through, and there wasn't much of anything left. Nobody was attending to the dressing room, so it was a hot mess - annoying line, messy, clothes everywhere, broken doors that don't lock, bleh. I reallllllly like this place. When I was visiting here there was a big sale! I bought so many clothes with the best offers! For example a Calvin Klein dress with 70% discount! The people working here are very friendly and willing to help! They are also nice to give you extra discount even when you dont have coupons. There are enough fitting rooms and even very clean restrooms. If you want to have a little more extra time to think about to buy clothes or not they can put it on hold for you. Very nice service. I popped in here today to buy a wedding present. Had absolutely no idea what to get. Newlyweds are in Georgia. Her style was "ultra-modern, neutral colors, wine tasting" . . . . but I understand the new hubby is an "early American, beer & sports" kind of guy. What to get, what to get? As I am floundering around checking out serving dishes, candlesticks, linens . . . . a sales associate asked me if I was lost. Lost? I told her I was fine . . . . and then I realized I was L O S T! and I desperately needed help. I told her my dilemma. She asked if they were registered. I had no idea. But, the wifey works in the tech division of Macy's . . . so why not? Yep, they were there. 10 minutes later, I'd bought the wedding gift online, had it wrapped and mailed and I was out of there! Let me say this review was going to be 1 star. After shopping today with little help from any staff? Are there sales people working? Or just cashiers? Upon checking out I was given some of the rudest service I have ever experienced. I was told I couldn't use the WOW savings pass when I clearly could. Rolling eyes, huge attitude. I ended up purchasing and leaving the store a little angry. When I returned home I called to let someone know about my experience. Anjelica answered and saved the day. Your curbside pickup is quick and easy. I order online and pickup same day. When the line inside is long, having it delivered to the car is a blessing to avoid crowds. This place used to be good 10 years ago. It's become the Macy's "dress for less" version . The staff is over worked and one older lady even asked if I needed a job because they are hiring. The security team is always following people like they're getting commission for every shoplifter they catch. Regarding the furniture department at Northgate, I have had several positive interactions over the last few months, buying a recliner, a couch and a rug. There was one issue with the rug, an incorrect UPS number logged into the system, which caused the wrong rug to be shipped. But the Rug Specialist and the salesperson were great in helping to straighten out the error, getting the incorrect rug returned and the correct rug ordered and onto my floor as quickly as possible. As a veteran of 40 years of retail having owned and operated three businesses myself I can state with confidence Macy's days are numbered! I give then one star because there are without question deals to be had and great brands to be purchased. The customer service at Macy's San Rafael and at Macy's Credit department is non-existent. I purchased a carving knife for my wife and was met by a gentleman who clearly did not want to be there. I was looking for advice and got a "This is what we have, take or leave it attitude." I walked away to leave this man's "help" and returned to the department ten minutes later to seek advice from a second sales person. I later found out she sold me a veggie prep knife NOT a carving knife. I bought a suit case for carry-on with the help of a young man which I later found out was not carry on size. I was told coupons would apply when they didn't at check out. That items were on sale which were not at check out. The store is dirty and completely disorganized. Cloths are not folded and there are many garments on the floor. I opted to have my receipts e-mailed to me and never got them. I spend close to two hours on the phone with Credit Card Services who told me it was my e-mail server all the time I'm receiving daily e-mail from Macys with specials and events. I worked with them over the several last years to have my credit line increased only to have them decrease it at this Holiday gift Season. I have been to this Macy's many times but this was the first time I needed help for something. Rose in the Jewelry Department was very helpful and very patience. I bought a watch which was too big for my wrist. She helped me resizing it but it was still too big. She then referred me to the watch repair guy upstairs. I didn't know this Macy offered watch repair service until now. The watch repair guy was also very helpful. Anyway, I was able to get the watch to fit my wrist.
