This is one of the best department stores I have been to, second only to the historic Macy's in Manhattan. The store is huge, they have covered all categories, and prices are reasonable. My fiancée and I have had many good experiences with Macy's over the years, especially with respect to buying linens, towels, and most recently, an additional mattress set for our home. The store had a wide selection of mattresses to try, in a variety of price ranges and styles. I went to the perfume department and first person to ask if I need any assistance was Kim. Oh I thought okay, this should be easy since I know what I want. Fast forward, not even 5 minutes to the encounter, she asked if I wanted the product... uhhh 1) I wouldn't be asking to see it just to see it, my bad if other customers do that but that's sales right? 2) she rings me up but doesn't tell me how much it is 3) her colleagues were a lot more professional and had a better demeanor (wished I gotten help from them instead) anyways, if you want better customer service avoid Kim's assistance. Review of Santaland: This is our 10th year heading to the SF Macy's Santaland so we're pretty experienced with the process. We buy the top photo package every year because we like getting all the digital copies along with printout. Anyway, this year their reservation system was crashing when we arrived. Our photos went fine but they decided to print only 1 view when we are typically able to mix and match when you buy the best package. This should have been a red flag. The package included 7 photos for download, basically all the photos they took, so I was cool with being able to get them. I went to the website a little while after the shoot and there was only the one photo showing in the downloadable location. The employees said "Don't worry, everything will be there tomorrow". I'm like: "What am I missing? Why would 1 photo be there today and the rest take until tomorrow?" Again, "this happens all the time. Don't worry. Check tomorrow." I think this is code for "Move along sucker"... Well, it's been 4 days and still only one photo showing online and when I click the download button it just spins that "working" image and nothing ever happens. Seriously?! In other news, they didn't have the Santa mailbox this year either. The kids were super confused why the couldn't write a list to Santa like every other year. Overall, $50 for one printed photo with the team shuffling us through the visit fast when there wasn't a single person there but us...Epic Fail. Sorry Macy's, you really blew it. Santaland should be an experience to keep shoppers coming...it's the only reason I visit every year and shop for Christmas in your store. Not next year though. Tanya L. Deserves an award!!!! Or her own parking spot in the front or something!!! I went to this store last night about an hour Before closing. I needed a whole new foundation regimen. As I was browsing a woman from the make up department came right up and asked if I needed help with anything. I told her my skin issues and what I need from a foundation and let me tell you what I have never received such outstanding customer service like that anywhere, ever. She went above and beyond the above and beyond. Not to mention i work for a handyman business so I was a little dirty from work that day and not a single ounce of judgement. And it was close to closing and she wasn't even rushing me. Not only that, she knows her stuff. Just from looking at my skin she recommended just what I needed. And I've already used the stuff and it's perfect. She went out of her way to make sure I was happy and got what I needed: It makes me have faith in the customer service industry when sometimes it's lost. If her boss reads this, I'm so serious this woman needs some serious praise and like an award. Her name on the wall or something. She represents your company remarkably and takes her job seriously and is just so great at it. She really is an amazing employee it's crazy!! I love Macy's, I love this Union square store and I cannot believe they will be closing it. This is a huge store with wide variety of products from men's and women's clothing to the home goods to the furniture to the wedding to the kitchenware to the jewelry and handbags and much more. Macy's has been a wonderful tradition of the American culture and San Francisco community. I know they said that they're not closing the store because of the crime rate in San Francisco, but because of the store not being profitable. But the store has not been profitable probably because people wouldn't want to come here to shop because of the crime rate in San Francisco. It's very sad and I hope San Francisco will do everything possible to keep Macy's at Union square. I recommend everybody to shop at this beautiful store, you can find everything that you need here and have an amazing shopping experience.l read more

Me on phone: "Hi, do you know if there's any tailor available today to tailor a Macys suit?" Macys: "I'm sorry, I don't know. This isn't the Men's suits department." Me: "Yes, I know, but I've called on three different days this week, as well as twice today, and nobody picked up. Can you transfer me directly to the Men's department anyway?" Macys: (Pauses and asks coworker for help) "No sir, we don't do transfers." Me: "Okay, can you please tell me how I can get my suit tailored by Macys?" Macys: "You'd need to go in to Macys and ask them." Me: "The last time I've driven there in person, nobody was available. I don't want to drive half an hour to downtown and find/pay for parking, only to discover that there's nobody available to help me. What do you suggest I do?" Macys: "You should call them." Me: "Yes, again, I've called an egregious amount of times and nobody's answered. That's why I'm asking for you to help me." Macys: "Ah, then you should come in yourself to ask them." Me: ... (pulling hair out) "Yes, and again, I don't want to come in only to waste my time if there's nobody available to tailor my suit." Macys: "Well then you should call them first." I went in today (4-29-2022) around 2PM to apply for a Macy's account at the behest of my bank who told me that having a line of credit with Macy's as well as them would significantly help my credit score in the long run. Entering the building I knew this was not a great idea. The first woman I spoke with told me I was denied before I even had a chance to fill out the application. After a brief back and forth I was told to speak with the second woman who entered my information. Nearly instantly I was told I was being "denied again" even though I only filled out the application once in my entire life. Not sure how I managed to get denied before applying then denied twice even though I only applied once. Overall this place is not the best place to go if you're of African decent. Online shopping is unfortunately still the best route to take as it takes profiling out of the equation. If not there are a lot of other stores who value not only your business but will treat you in a respectful manner. I write these reviews based on my experience so that others will not have to face the same obstacles that I have. But always do your own research! read more

I used to love this Macy's. I loved it when they occupied 2 buildings. It was easier to navigate and it didn't feel so gosh darn cluttered and crowded. Now that it's all one building, it's almost overwhelming and a turnoff when it comes to shopping. I got to check out black friday shopping in this singular building and it was a hot mess. I could barely move around. There were hardly any associates to help. Bathroom lines were long. It was crazy madness...so different from similar years. Anyhoo, they also got rid of a few brands for space. One off the top of my head? Diesel. Their G star product went considerably down and just isn't worth coming here for anymore. When I lived in the Bay Area years ago this Macy's was the closest thing to the New York Macy's. Especially the window decorations at Christmas time. Last week while staying in Union Square, I had to make a nostalgic stop at Macy's and check out the beautiful window displays. It was an utter disappointment! Only one window in one corner of the store was decorated and it wasn't as beautiful as the decorations of the past. The few windows that had animals on display were very plain. The best part was that there were no animals left as they were all adopted. The inside of the store was cramped with most of the departments crowded as expected with very little staff to help. The shoe department was a mess and it was impossible to get anyone to help. At some point we just gave up and went to the men's department to purchase a new satchel for my husband. At least we were able to get help from one very tall handsome fellow who was patient with us as we needed him to unlock some of the bags for us. It took about 20 minutes of waiting for someone to help us in the jewelry department. I am a big fan of EFFY and usually purchase something for myself during the holidays. The lovely lady who helped us was nice but clearly needed some help. This store use to be amazing and now it's just not as pleasant to shop as before. I hope it was just because of the Christmas rush and not the new norm. read more

This Macy's in the heart of San Francisco, is awesome! They have all kinds of brands, including high-end brands, and a large variety of sizes. I specifically am always looking for the large sizes and to see what the stores have in the large sizes and with the name brands. This is a great store for those things. I visited the store the first week in January, and was impressed that the store was not a complete rack. Everything seem to be fairly well organized, and even the sale sections were not too bad with the organization. As it's true at every Macy's, the staff is not very helpful. It seems like this is the case at most Macy's stores that they are just workers that don't earn very much money and don't really care about helping you out. I believe it's just the culture of this chain of stores. But the store itself was great! read more

What's not to love about shopping in Union Square? Especially when you can shop in some of the best stores within one enormous area of fun and glamour. Macys has a huge location. It's 7 floors of everything that Macys had to offer. Based on that, and based on the location, one would expect current trends, clean displays, and plenty of floor help. Leave your hopes and dreams behind. This isn't the glam spot that it should be, could be, or is. The store is a cluster of chaotic mayhem, covered with the feeling of hotel California. You will look for an escape, but I dare say you'll not readily find it. Customer service is nonexistent. As in, good luck finding anyone to help you with your purchases. Keep in mind, you will have mastered finding what you want/need in order to pay for it. The women's shoe department is heinous. It's a bevy if shoes tossed on the ground, displays are a mess, and frankly not worth the effort. Men, I get why many of you dislike shopping. Don't shop here. It will emphasize reasons to not step foot away from your computers for shopping purposes. As an added benefit to shopping in this madhouse, the restrooms will solidify why not using public restrooms is a thing. The women's bathroom is the stuff that dirty gas station restrooms are made of. Just don't go in there. This store is why we can't have nice things. read more

I love this Macy's, even after they combined men's and women's buildings. I love the experience of in-person shopping and this store is just wonderful for that. The choices are more limited now as a lot of the retail goes online, but nothing replaces the in person shopping for me. There are still plenty of choices at this Macy's from handbags and jewelry to clothes and home goods. Nothing can replace trying on the clothes, feeling the quality of the fabric and making sure that the size is right for you. Great location at the Union square gives you an opportunity to shop at other stores and grab a quick bite on the way. read more

This Macy's is always busy no matter what time of the day I come. Very unique in its own way. I love it when it's close to Christmas time. It's always so festive and they are known for their annual window display. This year's theme is SPCA. If you love animals, you must check it out. When I first started working here back in 2017. I thoughted it was a safe secure job in the long haul. But it didn't last long for me. I got hired by a wonderful manager name Robert. He picked me out of my Holiday Lane crew. I end up working on the Sixth which was Domestics: Home Bedding & Textiles. I had a lot of great teams of sales associate, supervisors, and managers. I also had a great chunk of clients over the years. Made a lot of friends and had a relationship there too. I was dating a Vietnamese girl at the time. Having good breaks with her at work. Going home with her on Bart. There's were good times working on the Sixth Floor. I managed to close like all the registers on the floor. Also had fun closing with Carol (a.k.a Chun Li). So, years later pass. Most of the great associates, supervisors, and managers had pass away. Move on to better jobs. And also, they retired too and went overseas. The Sixth Floor (Domestics and textiles) has move up to the Seventh Floor. I worked there for a while. Had great associates, Supervisors, and Managers. I had great clients on the seventh floor too. Then gradually my associates, supervisors, and managers started to fade out. What I meant by that is that lift the company or retired. So just to sum it up. Macy*s is a great place to work and make friends out of it. When I lift Macy*s I still keep in touch with the former Macy*s associates. When I go there just to look around. I still see some of my associates still working there. So if anyone reads this review and want to work at Macy*s. Stay focus on your position. Keep consistent attendance. Work well with others. Follow the company rules and etc. As for me I'll always CHERISH the great memories and moments I worked for this GREAT RETAIL COMPANY. read more

We came here last year and this year to visit Santa Clause. This year the Santa's village area was very small and disappointing. The most disappointing part was Santa himself. He was not jolly and he was just kind of a bummer. His hair and beard were fake and my kids thought he was creepy. They had a table to write letters to Santa right next to a big mail box, but there was no paper available. My daughter was very disappointed in this, as she was excited to write him a letter. Considering Macy's is such a large store, and with it being in Union Square, they should be able to do better with their Santa, village, and Christmas experience. read more

I can't say much about this place, except there were no sales associates to be found, and the rest room was filthy. I found it to be one of the most disorganized Macy's I've ever been to and this is "by appointment" - by appointment of what? Gross, filthy restrooms, and not to mention clothing strewn all about. Granted it was the "holiday" season, but it seemed they were understaffed. This store is VERY HOT!! I mean the heater was blasted so high that I could barely breathe!! It was like a maze getting out. I don't normally shop at Macy's, but this store has a fantastic variety of inventory. All sorts of colors, styles, prints, patterns, and textures everywhere you look. Icame in looking for a raincoat for my upcoming trip to London. While they had well over a dozen different brands styles and colors, unfortunately, I couldn't find one that was the length I wanted. Despite huge inventory, the displays are well-organized, wellspace, neat, and visually appealing. Each floor is fairly easy to navigate if you're browsing, but you may need directions if you're looking for something specific. The staff I encountered weren't the most friendly, but they were helpful in assisting me in finding what I was looking for. read more

We popped in to the 6-level women's Macy's building as a friend was looking for some pot or pan that was on sale, and this is where the home department is located (the men's building is across the way). While not as imposing at the flagship monstrosity of NYC, I really liked the San Francisco stores because they're easier to navigate through. What set this location apart from the rest of the red star stores was the food court, AKA "Macy's Cellar" on the first level. While I've seen this concept done on much larger scales at Mistukoshi in Japan and Harrod's in London, I've yet to see another Macy's with something similar. It's not big with just 9 vendors, but it's better than nothing! There's something for everyone - Starbucks, Jamba Juice, Ben & Jerry's, Asian Box, Burger Bar, Tortilla Kitchen, Boudin Bakery, Tout Sweet Patisserie, and Mixed Greens. Our friend reported that the men's building is supposed to close and join forces with the women? We'll be back in June 2017 so I'll definitely report back. read more

Rude workers (2) with straight attitudes. Made a few returns, got attitude.... The items were in separate plastic bags, not the bags that they were "delivered" in, the cashier wanted me to remove them from the plastic as well, after refunding items, I asked her to throw plastic away including the plastic that items were delivered in. She acted like I was supposed to keep it. She then informed me that the place to do returns was on the first floor as well but in a rude way, not an informative way. I asked her to validate my parking ticket and directions to the women's restroom and she was just unpleasant. After using the restroom on floor 3, browsing and trying on clothes, I proceeded to the first floor to validate parking ticket and encountered another rude person when trying to locate where I could get it done.... "It's way over there", well thanks, I didn't know, I'm looking for it. I don't usually shop downtown Macys, I can count the times on one hand. I'm sure tourists and visitors shop there and need directions, you would think the location would be lots friendlier and willing to give information and directions, remove items from plastic, etc. ‍ read more
