I went here desperate for a makeup help back in February: it was Super Bowl week and we had a huge work event that evening and every single thing for me went wrong that day. I didn't make any appointment since the day that I had unfolded in a way I couldn't predict, and when I spoke with an associate in the makeup department, she immediately could tell I was gonna break down and cry at the moment, and was so kind and sat me down and consulted me on all these different products I needed and gave me a mini makeover. It was something so small, but that act of kindness and calm made me feel SO MUCH BETTER after an awful and stressful day. Lobna, the sales associate in Macy's San Francisco mattress department, was terrific! She helped us consider all the various brands and types of mattresses. I have bought a number of mattresses from Macy's over the years and tbh the lower-priced models did not hold up well after 4-5 years. However we have bought nicer mattresses in recent years and they have been good so far (though it has not been 4-5 years yet). Also, the return policy has helped us make sure we got the right mattress which is so important. And again, Lobna was terrific at sale and as we exchanged a platform. So many mattress salespeople at other stores are so done with you once the sale is closed but Macy's and Lobna worked to make sure we were satisfied. read more

Macy's in San Francisco is one of the last stores in downtown San Francisco where you can buy moderately priced clothes. Also, even though this store is older they have great prices, a wide selection of cosmetics and perfume and a couple of places to eat in the store. Boudin sourdough has delicious soup and sandwichs made with Boudin sourdough bread. Great shoes for men and women and a few floors of designer brands in contemporary styles. I'm happy I shopped here. They need to hire an escalator repairman. While I can walk up and down non moving stairs, some patrons cannot so have signs pointing them to an elevator. These escalators have not worked for years. Both restrooms by the food court need the toilet bowls cleaned, soap in the dispenser and either the air dryers repaired or a supply of paper towels. Otherwise the store was clean, displays fairly inviting. I used to enjoy shopping here but anymore not so much. And my complaints are not confined to THIS store. Macys isn't special anymore. I walked out empty handed. read more

only 4/5 stars because they are woefully understaffed. the other 4 stars go to the hardworking employee at Women's Shoes named Kea. Man had to juggle like 17 customers, not all of them English speaking, and he was literally running around with a smile on his face finding these shoes. I said "idk if u got this in 5 1/2, no worries if not" and my man Kea didn't accept defeat. He found me those shoes in (if you can believe it) 5 1/2 and even said thank you to ME! I was like Kea you deserve gold for these treasures you've procured. The Macy's Union Square store is one of the retailer's largest and oldest locations, long the flagship of Macy's California, and then Macy's West. Its convenient location used to attract tons of locals and tourists across the country and the world. Apparently the facilities are old and need some maintenance, such as the loud noisy escalators and elevators. It's sad to see the traffic has been declined and not as popular as it used to be. I really hope this iconic store can survive in SF. read more

I'm extremely disappointed with Macy's in Union Square. After nearly 80 years of hosting Santa and creating a holiday tradition for families, they've decided to cancel it. This was one of the few remaining pieces of holiday magic in San Francisco, and it's disheartening to see Macy's walk away from something so meaningful to generations of customers. Because of this decision and the lack of regard for the community's long-standing traditions, I will be canceling my Macy's credit card and will no longer be shopping at Macy's. I want to share an experience that was both painful and unfortunately far too familiar for many Black people. I went to the Macy's in downtown San Francisco to purchase a coat I had seen online. After work, I biked over with my backpack, headed to the men's department, and began trying on the jacket. Within seconds, a security guard rushed over and positioned himself about eight feet away from me. Then a second appeared. Then a third. I was the only Black man on that floor, surrounded by white shoppers who were browsing freely -- yet I was the one being watched, monitored, and treated as a potential threat. The level of discomfort I felt made it impossible to continue shopping normally. I grabbed the first jacket and headed to pay because I no longer felt safe or welcome. It's disheartening that in 2025, a Black man in America still can't shop for clothes without being shadowed by security. I went downstairs and spoke with a member of the leadership team to report the incident. Macy's is one of the few places I genuinely enjoy shopping, and it's frustrating to feel like I can't do so without being unfairly judged or assumed to be doing something wrong. I filed a complaint because experiences like this are exhausting, and the emotional toll is real. I rode home angry, hurt, and fighting back tears. San Francisco hasn't always been the easiest city for Black people, but this kind of treatment is unacceptable anywhere. We all deserve the dignity of being treated as human beings first -- not stereotypes. I'm not boycotting the store, but I felt it was important to raise awareness and make leadership aware of what happened. The person I spoke with was empathetic, and I appreciated that, but the broader issue remains: people need to stop making assumptions based solely on appearance. The harm it causes is deeper than many realize. read more

I came to Macy's Union Square looking for jeans, and I found cute different styles that could be potential. The styles I liked areCelebrity Pink, Inc. Style & Co. This Macy's employee (Latin 60+) that is assigned to the fourth floor rudely told me that I can't try any clothes in this fitting room and recommended to go up. She closed the fitting room in my face, and trapped everyone that was inside. Besides that she didn't open it for other potential buyers. This fitting room is always open. I complained to the management about my treatment. If she got the audacity to do something shady again at my face. A few years ago we bought furniture there and they sold us an insurance for furniture with a subcontractor . They insurance says that if we did not use the insurance they will return the money. I called twice and they said the policy has not expired yet. They did not return the money because I did not call 90 days after the policy expired!! What a ripoff! Do not buy there. They do not care. This review is specifically for the Asian lady running the 1st floor customer service spot on the evening of 7/18/25: I had a couple of simple returns. Was hanging out in line just long enough to see her help a few people before me. Couldn't help but notice that she was the platonic ideal of a calm, kind and efficient CS professional with every single person. One doesn't encounter stand-out CS every day so wanted to give a quick shout out. Another quick mention to the nice professional "red jacket" security guy who spotted me looking for a specific store exit. Didn't shop at Macy's, but I *did* go specifically to see their Christmas windows. I was disappointed that the puppies and kittens weren't on display, but the carousel animals and the stuffed animals *almost* made up for it. Very whimsical windows, so the four stars are only for the windows! I appreciate the fact that they try to make the holidays bright for all the children and visitors to San Francisco and hope whoever takes over the windows will continue to do so for many years to come! read more

My family had a great experience here because of Eiji and his help in the women's shoe department. They were visiting from Colombia and trying on different shoes and sizes and he kept a very friendly and positive attitude the entire time. This rating is regarding Macy's security. Went for dinner at the Cheesecake Factory yesterday, only to see non-existent security. Haven't been here since Covid and it's apparent that A LOT has changed since then regarding the professionalism and work ethic of the security staff. Had a transient follow me into the side Cheesecake Factory elevator. I hopped out as soon as I realized he seemed mentally disturbed and smelled. He also had a woman's wallet in his jacket pocket, which I found to be odd at the time. Lo and behold a few moments later, saw him inside the restaurant loitering and just acting strangely, before he spotted me again and just left. Seriously, what's the point of security, when they don't even do their job? Oh and the cherry on top- after dinner, while waiting for my ride-share, I see this old Asian guy just stalking me in the restaurant lobby. He never introduced himself. Just harassed me while I was waiting near the elevator of the Cheesecake factory with the Cheesecake bag (obvi I'm a restaurant customer!) asking me personal questions repeatedly like "Are you waiting for friends?", while I clearly responded that I already told him I was waiting for rideshare. He just Mills around, and then when the elevator finally arrives, he follows me in and says,'Oh I'm not stalking you, just need to open the door for you downstairs because it's locked" Umm OK ... Seriously, couldn't he have just waited at his desk downstairs and unlocked the doors for me like all the security guys have done in the past during after hours? Just such a strange and weird response, especially after I mentioned to him that I felt this transient was stalking me earlier. His reply was ," Oh we have a lot of those" and laughed it off. Based off this experience alone, I felt like his behavior and aggressive nature was unnecessary, and I wouldn't feel safe dining here at night, or especially when he's on shift since it's obvious he doesn't care about your safety or takes his job seriously. As soon as we got to the lobby floor, he hurriedly opened the door and kicked me out even though I asked if I could wait until my ride-share arrived. Just a crappy human being overall. Macy's security team seems to have had an overhaul, hiring these numbnuts. I hope Macy's management sees this and does some much needed serious retraining. read more

So glad Macy's is sticking around, and Julie, at Lancôme, was very helpful. She helped me select a foundation for my mom, after I showed her a photograph of her, and explained that she was seated, waiting for me on another floor, because she was too tired to head over to the makeup department with me. She studied the photograph, walked over with me to the Idole Ultra Wear selections, tested a bunch of different shades of the liquid foundation on her own arm, and we finally found one that fits! They run scams at this store. They don't give you receipts unless you ask so you can't return things, and they always charge you for a bag even if you don't get one. Then they act passive aggressive and say they can return the entire order and check out all over again. Salespeople are super shady. This Macy's location has been here for a while now. I heard that they switch up how they operate there, but this is different because it has several floors to go to including the Cheesecake Factory all the way at the top of the building. Each floor has different sections including women's, men's furniture, etc. The only problem is how some of the escalators from upper floors don't work. Honestly hope that they don't take a while to fix them. Also, there are way more women sections than men's. Wish that there are more sections for men. I think 5th floor is the only one that has sections for men. Other than that. Really have nice brands with expensive items. I'm also planning on doing its Cheesecake Factory in the future. I went to my favorite Macys this morning with my kids. There were rats running on the 8th floor backstage ! I had to run because how terrified I am of them. Thank God I found a very pleasant associate on the 4th floor who calmed us and helped us find someone to ring us up so we could get going with our day. I think her name was Demara. Went to Macys looking for pink shoes & pink clothing for the Barbie movie. They had several Barbie branded colabs with name brands, big pink signage & staging sets, sort of like an IKEA display, only with kitschy pink retro furniture. I did manage to find non-heels comfortable glitter sneakers & a dress with doll-like giant skirting. I didn't notice until I got home that the dress was ripped on several seams. Luckily I know how to sew. This score is after literally 1.5 hours walking every inch of every floor. Most of the clothing was plus sizes, ugly sneakers, uncomfortable but awesome heels, but even the mid-range sizes were unavailable. The bathrooms! Disgusting. Guilty Until Proven Innocent Shopping at Macy's San Francisco has become a humiliating ordeal. My wife and I were simply looking for a Polo shirt, but everything was locked up like a high-security prison. I had to ask a sales clerk just to unlock a chain--yes, a literal chain--around the shirts. I told her I wanted to try one on, and instead of a helpful smile, I got an escort to the fitting room like I was under surveillance. She waited outside, eyes locked on the door, just to make sure I returned the shirt afterward. Despite the awkwardness, I liked the fabric and decided to buy seven shirts. That's when things took a turn for the worse. Suddenly, four security guards appeared and surrounded us as if I had just pulled off a heist. They hovered close--tight, intimidating--until I paid. Then and only then did they slowly back off. Never in my life have I felt so criminalized just for shopping. Ten years ago, this never would have happened at Macy's. And here's the worst part: none of the white shoppers nearby were treated like this. Not one. The message was clear--and it was disgusting. This wasn't security. If you guys are really leaving San Francisco hurry up and leave!! This is the worst store ever. I've seen better customer service at a thrift store or the Goodwill. Actually it's hard to say they have bad customer service because there is no service at all. Level 3 is about 82 degrees with NO circulation at all. The security guard is walking around with papers fanning herself. Nobody was on level 4 at the checkout counter, as a matter of fact we couldn't find an employee at all! Went down to level 3, found a checkout counter and waited. As we got to the front of the line the lady said we'll have to wait, she is going to take a break now. Guess we'll try a third floor to purchase or items. Looking for help of any sort is nearly impossible. You'd have better luck seeing a unicorn than finding an employee working. And good luck with the escalators, half of them don't work. Want to use the hand sanitizer dispenser? Too bad, many of them don't work or are empty. You are the worst store I have been to. read more
