Wasn't sure if I had ever had a Philly Cheesesteak sandwich. I have to admit, I am not a big fan of the sandwich. This does not mean it wasn't a great sandwich. I agree with Eric A. The Philly cheese steak here is mighty tasty. I don't care if it is not really authentic "Philly"; if it past my taste test. If you want some extra flavor try the "HOT" cheese steak. That is bursting with flavor. Perhaps it is because I live near Washington DC, but the price was very reasonable for what you get (a bargain really). Since we were having lunch, two of us (females) split an 8" sub and had enough. If we had added fries, we would have had to much. The only downer, was no beer (really). I love my cheese steak with beer. It is not a good idea to have cheese steak to go because the sub bun will get soggy, NATURALLY. Eating there is the best approach even without the beer. Mac's is a staple in Canandaigua. It's often on the short list for dinner options when we go out. It's consistently delicious, no matter what you order. Beef, chicken, salad with either on top - amazing. The bread is to die for. It's perfect for containing the meat/cheese/onion mixture of your choice. And the French fries. I want to order their Buffalo chicken Philly on top of the fries. I've never attempted. But I know it would be out of this world. Friendly, accommodating staff and clean restaurant and bathroom. Great food. Classic foods, yummy for the tummy! Great prices too. Only suggestion is that I wouldn't dine in, better luck with the take out. They weren't attentive at all, forgot my boyfriends fries, creamer (three times), to go box, and we had to ask for refills when another server was pouring for her tables. I requested cottage cheese for a starter, she forgot it- when I reminded her, it was left in the window. Got it towards the end of my meal and it was room temperature. However, the owner stepped up and tried to fix the issue. They comp'ed the meal, tipped the original bill, at the end of the day the food was good and the owner was great. I just recommend that they two people work the floor so they have ONE person work the window. Seems all the issues were lack of communication, who is where and doing what/running what and so on. read more

Mac's in Canandaigua is usually in my top 3 when trying to figure out where to go to eat. I love their Buffalo Chicken Cheesesteaks and I'm not sure what they do to their french fries but I doubt it's legal. They have a great menu and a lot of other items to choose from, like other sandwiches and salads. It's especially good for those looking for something outside of the Cheesesteak realm. I've talked to a lot of people who say they "Don't like Cheesesteaks" and I always tell them that Mac's will have something you like, no doubt. Give it a try, you won't be disappointed! read more

I had to call a few times to get my order placed because it kept saying busy which wasn't a big problem it must mean a lot of people like their food. We had it delivered and it took an hour which was also fine if you aren't super hungry. Once it arrived the food was hardly warm but it was still good. I am a bonafide cheese steak snob. I went to college in Philadelphia, and have since been of the opinion you can't get a good cheese steak outside of the Philly area. Good food with nice prices. Have had a few Philly Cheesesteaks and Mac's seem to be missing something I cannot put my finger on. They are really good, but not as good as some of the places in Philly that made the cheesesteak famous. The staff was great. They have fountain and bottled drinks. They only had 2 options for chips, but I have been to other locations and they have had more so maybe I caught them on a busy week. Plenty of seating. Very clean. Great location. read more

Mac's is a great spot in town. Can't beat it for in and out food that you know is going to be good. Sometimes it takes them longer than I expect to get orders out (and they completely forgot a friend's order once), but the food is good enough to ignore it. I always go classic cheesesteak, and they don't skimp on meat like lots of places do. The ratio of cheese to steak is bang on too. Definitely worth it for a casual meal. read more

Having eyed this place for a while, I convinced the wife to stop here for lunch as opposed to the other eateries on Main Street in Canandaigua. I likes me a good cheesesteak. This was not. The place was clean and service was fine. Actually the counter person was very patient and helpful...better than average. The wife and I split their "Cheese Steak with Everything". It was bland and soggy. Even the toppings failed to add any flavor to the sandwich. Seemed to be overpriced once you added drinks and fries. Their only saving grace this meal was their sweet potato fries. They could have had more flavor, but they were cooked to perfection. This is an old review, but still appropriate. Once upon a time, Mac's was a godsend for 2 lonely brothers from South Jersey. My pops retired to a beautiful little lake cabin on Lake Keuka. Eventually cancer caught up with him and he ended up passing on in the spring of 08. Me and little bro ended up spending the summer up at the lake cabin, reminiscing and getting Pop's affairs in order. Mac's was like a godsend, a little slice of home in the middle of nowhere. I cannot tell you how many times we made the 30+ minute drive from Penn Yan to Canandaguia for a few steaks. ALWAYS on point-and great friendly employees. Back then they gave you coupons, like buy 10 steaks get one for free. Needless to say we got a few freebies. Not the best steak in the Finger Lakes, the ONLY AUTHENTIC steak in the Finger Lakes. Extremely clean, the woman behind the counter was cleaning everything when we walked in. We ordered a foot-long chicken Philly to split and when we received it as steak, they remade the sandwich immediately. I actually eat red meat whereas my partner does not, so we asked them only to remake half for him, but they remade the whole thing and now we have an entire sandwich (his beef half and a new chicken half) to bring home, on them. , I have gone here for years.. I have only had the steak sub,but it is the best in the area. I have traveled up to 45 min just to get one of these subs. They offer a rewards type program were they give you little green tickets. You collect 12 and get a free 8 inch sub..parking can be tricky. For those who complain on here that it's not an "authentic philly cheese steak", please relax. YOU ARE NOT IN PHILLY. I've been to Philly, had their best, and Mac's is just as good. The owner runs a good business. The dining area is clean and inviting, the staff is always friendly and accommodating, and the coupons they give out with every order is a great customer appreciation strategy that increases customer retention. As far as quick and casual dining goes, Mac's is one of my favorite places in Canandaigua. I always get the 8" philly cheesesteak combo which comes with a side (french fries, chips, etc) and a drink for around $9.00. The cheesesteak is loaded with chopped steak and is really flavorful. The fries are the good kind - Not your flavorless frozen fries. In addition, the service has always been above and beyond friendly, helpful, and polite. If you're in the area, make sure to check Groupon or LivingSocial because Mac's always has a deal! They also have a loyalty program where you get a coupon for each cheesesteak you order and when you collect 12, you get a free one. Who doesn't like free food?! read more

So if you're looking for an authentic Philly Cheesesteak, South Philly is only 5 and 1/2 hours away from Canandaigua by car. Otherwise, if you just want to stay in town and have a good lunch, head over to Mac's, which is the only place I am aware of that does a garbage plate using Philly steak. They also deliver. Tip: If you are ever in South Philly and can't decide between Pat's or Geno's, I must admit that despite my conservative political leanings(which many would assume would endear me to Geno's), Pat's definitely has the best cheesesteak, IMHO. I wouldn't even put 1 star to rate this place. First time there, and the girl was so rude, i asked her for a refund and all she said was "no that's what you ordered". Honestly I've never seen a place with non-refundable policy. At least could've said that we can reorder for that price or get the money back or something.
