Went in here when it was not busy on a Sunday late morning. Staff seemed very blasé about their job. I asked about sandwiches and they said they had limited availability on what meat could be added so I went with bacon and she made me a terrible tasting sandwich. It was just awful. Greasy, messy, wilted greens. And not sure how, but something in it was sweet?? It was so gross. Really disappointed. Also the coffee that I ordered I asked for light syrup added to my drink and they made it SO SWEET. They seemed confused when I asked for a Mezzo, which is not a crazy ask for a coffee shop. I normally wouldn't ask, but it was undrinkable, so requested they remake it. Second version was different and had no sugar at all, but still didn't taste good. The staff seemed really unengaged, like they hate working there. Really disappointed by this experience. Place seemed clean enough. There weren't that many people in there. Baked goods looked tempting, but I was there for a sandwich and coffee, so I can't comment. I know working at a coffee shop doesn't pay much having been there myself, but take some pride in your work. Who knew flying out from SFO at 6 am would be so chaotic and crowded? Clearly, I didn't which is why I ran a four minute mile getting from terminal 2 to terminal 1 (thanks to Uber dropped me off at the wrong spot), back to terminal 2 (because the security line was shorter and I was late), then once again back to terminal 1 (because that's where my gate was located of course). So I find myself in Seattle at 9-ish in the morning, slightly groggy, and definitely in need of breakfast. And however I found my way to Macrina, I'm still unsure, but I was super thankful I did just the same. Breakfast BLT - bacon, lettuce, tomato, and egg on grilled sourdough. Awesome! Add a couple dabs of hot sauce and I was well on my way to recovery. Americano - I dare say if I had their expresso straight up, there'd be enough concentrated caffeine for me to run all the way back to SF. Americano hit the spot and I was ready to finally start my day. Mini Olivia's Chocolate chip cookies - solid. A nice treat for later. Staff was friendly and chill. Ambiance was also very chill. As a long time supporter of Macrina's, I've eaten at the Belltown and Roosevelt locations with great service. I came in today to this location and the staff appeared emotionless, robotic, and not enthused. They were pumping out coffee and taking orders and it reminded me of old some old school Seattle diner. I hope this feed back to help staff seem like they are enjoying their job is heard. Asking a barista for extra milk and them not saying a word can be very unpleasant. Very tasty down to earth kind of eating with great gluten free options. The energy was calming and nurturing so I really enjoyed the repose.

This is my most frequented Macrina location. Since it's near work, I'm often picking up food for lunch meetings. I will call ahead to put my order in and pick up at the designated time. Shay, Gretchen & crew are amazing to work with. The carne salad and sandwiches rotate every two weeks. I'm also a fan of their morning glory muffins and desserts. Mmmm, really glad I came across this location in Sodo-last time I recall visiting an actual Macrina cafe was 15 years ag when I lived in capital hill. Allllll the pastries and baked goods are delicious, oh boy. I got some blueberry scones to take home and they were scrumptious (we added some creme fresh and blueberries) with coffee for breakfast. The chicken pot pie was amazing. My husband took one bit to taste it but ended up eating the whole thing. The sandwiches were made fresh and nicely toasted. I loved this place. The interior was adorable, and that was just the start. I ordered an iced vanilla latte to be on the safe side, and threw in a raspberry-rhubarb upside down cake. Turns out they make their own vanilla sugar. The latte was really good! I then tried my sister-in-law's mocha and it was even better! The upside down cake was pretty good, but the real showstopper pastry was the pecan roll my husband ordered. Whew! It was crunchy, soft, sweet, but not too sweet. It was perfect. I ordered the Carne sandwich (turkey, bacon & avo) on a roll & chicken and rice soup. The soup was good albeit bland. Could use some seasoning. The sandwich was probably the biggest let down. The the bread was really good but they put 1 sad little slice of turkey, a very small amount of avo. It's more of a bread sandwich than anything else. I stopped by Macrina Bakery & Cafe at their SoDo Location. This is a nice space that's perfect for getting some work done, which is a real anomaly in this neighborhood. At lunch here, you'll find sandwiches on their fresh bread, as well as salads and pasta. If you're lucky, the cake samples will come out. Overall, my experience was lukewarm primarily due to the customer service or rather lack thereof. I understand this is a bakery /cafe and it can get busy but a smile to greet paying customers will definitely not hurt. Bread / Sandwiches were good hence the 3 stars. read more

I noticed my last review was seven years ago and honestly the customer service has improved quite a bit since then. Doesn't look like much from the outside and it sits along a pretty desolate stretch of 1st Ave in SODO. We were headed to Costco one morning and stopped in for a quick bite. The store was quite empty and extremely cold. Like, it felt like AC was on full blast in the middle of winter cold. My husband had a blueberry scone and I had a morning bun. No one offered or asked if we wanted them warmed up, so we sat down for a few minutes to drink our coffee, eat a few bites of our pastries and bounced. I visited the Kent location at 7:30 on my way to work this morning and was initially curious about a fly in the pastry case because it seemed out of place. But when my server coughed into her gloved hand and used her hands to put my order together, it made me really uncomfortable. This is the day before family comes over, it is cold and flu season, and if we've learned nothing from a pandemic about proper hygiene, we've learned that coughing into your hand is not what you want to see in food service. I have experienced microagression previously by the staff of Macrina and have shrugged it off, but today I was appalled and incensed at how blatant it was and because it happened at the hands of the manger Alex Kaiser! I did not know he was the manager until I looked up their team. I was standing in line to order just like everyone else. This man behind the pastry counter asks me what I wanted, I said "just drinks." Then he proceeds to skip me and take the drink order of the guy behind me! I am beyond mortified. WTF just happened? I turn to him and say " hey man, how about my order?" He has a laidback attitude and smiles and says something like "sure" or some such inane thing like it was no big deal. I am getting pissed at his attitude. Anyway I order my two cappucinos and I turn to the guy behind me and asked him what the hell just happened, how did he take his drink order before mine. The guy has the gall to say " it's ok, I come here everyday, he knows me." The hell it is ok! There is a reason there is a line, meaning we each get served in order. I paid for my drinks and even tipped (stupid guilt!) and waited 10 min for my order, and guess what--the order of the guy behind me was called out before mine! I was so damn disgusted, I left without getting my drinks. I went straight to Starbucks, I was served appropriately, the person behind me was not served before me, and the world righted itself again. Y'all may think this is a small deal just like Alex and the customer behind me, but it is NOT. It violates all norms of customer service and the appalling thing is it was done so brazenly, without any apology. If it were an honest mistake, it might be understandable. And to the dude standing behind me who thinks it's ok to be served before the person in front of you just because you frequent a joint regularly, your sense of entitlement is not only disgusting but completely misplaced--that is not how a line works man. But I can't blame him entirely, because the fault lies squarely with the manager who should absolutely not be the manager of this place or any other until he gets his head out of his youknowwhat and learns some basics of customer service. And btw, I have spent hundreds of dollars getting cakes, pasteries, and food catered from Macrina but I don't beleive that gives me the right to expect service out of order. Needless, to say I will never patronize this joint ever and will certainly encourage my pals to go elsewhere for their business. You can keep the money I paid for the drinks I paid today as the last dollar you will ever get from me. Disgusted. PK read more
