While Apple continues to almost ruin people's lives and rid of all their memories, hopes, and dreams, MacMechanic's business is flourishing and working their best to get people's information recovered fully and in a timely manner. Recently I had a scare where my Mac tried updating itself even though I had automatic updates turned off. I called Apple and chatted with a lovely customer service lady in Canada for 2 hours making a friend but getting nothing accomplished with my laptop. I then took it into Apple where they admitted it was their fault I couldn't in to my laptop and they were very sorry but the only way to fix things would be to spend thousands of dollars sending it off to their techs, "trying" to recover my info, and most likely not getting much back. They suggested I go to a Mac repair store instead (which is so strange, am i right?) which lead me to MacMechanic. I called them and told them the brief situation of things and they were so calming and nonchalant, telling me to bring in my laptop anytime and they'd for sure be able to get all my information off then find out what the issue was. I brought it in the next day, on a Friday morning and picked it up on a Tuesday. After many phone calls and precise communication they ended up recovering everything but spending a little more labor time/cost than I had desired. However, they added 3-5 years of life onto my mac by replacing my hard drive with a bigger and better one, put all my info back on the laptop as it was before, ran a bunch of tests for viruses, unneeded storage occupancy, etc. and turned into into a brand new computer basically. I also have a 3 year warranty which is fantastic! These guys were extremely helpful, nice and calming, smart as heck, and even though it'll cost me a few a paychecks more than I'd hoped they were honest and communicated the whole situation very professionally. I completely enjoyed my experience with Mac Mechanic on State St. in Santa Barbara, CA. Through email and phone the staff I encountered treated me well and with friendly respect. I just got off the phone with Justin at MacMechanic, and won't be back. As I was describing my problem, he repeatedly interrupted me to ask questions -- I think he interrupted me 5 times. He then said that he recommended replacing my machine rather than repairing it. It was a $2500 fully loaded macbook pro, so I was surprised he was recommending replacement when his repair estimate was $500 to $700. When I asked him why he recommend replacement, he again interrupted me and said that we could discuss that in person when I brought the machine in, but that a customer had just walked in. For a first customer contact, about as rude and bad as it gets. NOT RECOMMENDED. read more

I had a bad experience with MacMechanic. I spilled soda on my mac keyboard and needed it fixed. I was told it would be a 2-4 week wait, but the fix ended up taking over 7 weeks. I am a graduate student - my computer is part of my work space! Not having it for 7 weeks, without a single phone call to let me know what was wrong with my computer or to give me advance warning of how long the repair would take, was awful. I had to call Mac Mechanic multiple times. Also - FYI - Mac Mechanic does not always fix computers on site. When I called to ask why my repair was taking so long, I spoke with someone (manager maybe?) and they said that they had to mail my computer out. WHAT? I never, ever agreed to have my computer mailed out. They also told me that I would just have to wait for my repair and by dropping off my computer at Mac Mechanic, I automatically agreed to let them do what they wanted with it. The person I spoke with on the phone was incredibly rude and off-putting. I asked them why they didn't call and ask if it was ok to mail my computer out and they said they didn't have to tell customers anything about the repair process. Nope, not buying that. I did receive a $200 or $300 discount on my repair because of the inconvenience but I don't think I will ever go to Mac Mechanics again. My computer is working and I've had no problems with it since I received it. read more

I have a Mid-2010 Macbook Pro 13 inch. She was running sooooooo sloooooow... It was awful but a new macbook pro is $1800 bucks plus tax! YIKES! I brought her in and had them install a new 500gb solid state drive, upped the gb's from 4 to 8, swapped out the battery and my trackpad was acting up so replaced her too! The result: WOW! My computer is actually faster and smoother than it was brand new. Couple weeks ago my fully upgraded 2017 MacBook Pro went on a date with the rain. By the time I had realized this, I knew it may have been to late. In my panic, I began doing everything I could to assure myself maybe just maybe the computer had been saved by my cover I have guarding my laptop. Do not do what I did! (It will fry the insides) 1. Don't Turn on computer 2. Don't Plug it into a power source 3. Don't Try turning on computer several hours later What you are supposed to do is immediately shut down the computer and lay it upside down with a fan facing it. If you know how take out the battery then take it out too (water+electricity=frying). As soon as possible, take your computer to someone who knows how to properly dry and clean the inside of the laptop to stop further damage. That's about the only thing I did right in my case. Unfortunately it happened late Saturday and MacMechanic was closed till Monday. So first thing Monday I rushed it over and dropped off my laptop, the staff were very friendly and answered all my questions putting many of my worries to rest. They called later that day and said they cleaned and dried the inside of the computer but some damage had been taken and so components will need replacement. Now if you took this to Mac store they would charge you a flat fee of $1200! Not with these guys, the total bill ended up being $600, half the price! I was so excited, not only is the computer working as if brand new, I also didn't lose any of my data! It took only a week for my computer to get totally fixed, I was beyond satisfied. If you have liquid damage, take it to these guys. read more

This is a review for their DATA RECOVERY in August 2016. First, I'd like to say that everyone was incredibly nice and forthcoming with costs when I dropped off my computer for deleting my Photos library. They really tried their best when it came to customer service every time I was there in person. Their intake staff deserves a pat on the back for handling their customers well. Unfortunately, on the phone it was much harder to get in touch and I realized that I needed to go in to get them to get started on my recovery the next day (after I was assured after dropping it off AND calling that evening that they would start it overnight). When they did finally get to it, they called me to tell me that there was no luck in getting back 160GB of photos. They were perfectly nice when telling me so, and they get 2 stars for these customer service exchanges. However, I then took my computer to Samy's Camera Santa Barbara in a last ditch attempt and they were able to recover over 90GB in one day! I was SO incredibly thrilled and SO disappointed that I almost walked away from a ton of memories thanks to this establishment. The cost was also about 15% of the price quoted by MacSuperStore. Please, if you need data recovery, do NOT take your computer here. If you are coming to this store for another reason (like purchasing, etc), then I cannot speak to your experience. read more

I was referred here by an employee at Apple to repair my MacBook Pro. The LCD had broken, and the employees here said that the piece and repair would cost about $800 in total, so they recommended I buy a new LCD on my own and bring it in for them to place onto my computer at the rate of $60 for half an hour. My MacBook Pro was repaired the same day, within half an hour of me dropping it off, and the staff called me the minute they finished the job to let me know I could come in to retrieve it. They did a great job and cleaned the outside of my laptop as well. read more

I fried my hard drive and only had about 25% backed up. Sad day. Came in to Mac Mechanic and was greeted with friendly, helpful staff. Quoted $150 to try to recover the all the data on the drive. I approved and left the drive for them to recover the data. Edited: I got a call from them today apologizing for what appears to be an honest miscommunication. They refunded the $100 and explained what had happened and, best of all, that they modified policy to prevent future instances. Can't ask for more than that. Well handled, very professional. These guys really go the extra distance, providing top notch service at really fair prices and a level of expertise that is hard to match in town. A friend from SB recommended The Mac Mechanic when I told him I needed to upgrade my MacBook Pro with more memory and an SSD hard drive. A quick Google search informed me that MacSuperstore took over Mac Mechanic but service didn't appear to suffer after the transition. Just look at recent reviews! I called to get an estimate on turnaround time and was told it would take upwards of ten days from the day I dropped it off. Since I use my computer for my business, I couldn't afford that much downtime, so Jason (the service manager) suggested the expedited service. It was $150 more, but he also said that if I brought the computer in on the day I suggested (a Wednesday), they could very likely get it done by end of day (no guarantees). I drove up from Oxnard early that morning so I could be first in line to drop it off. A different Jason was very professional and friendly when taking in the computer. The best part, though, was that I got the call by lunchtime that the upgrades had been made and my laptop was ready! I've never had to have my Mac serviced so I can't speak to whether my bill was expensive or inline with the market, but I can say that I'm thrilled with the service I received and my computer has never run faster. My MAC needed quite a bit of updating and cleaning out and I was initially apprehensive about leaving it overnight. But I was advised of their safety protocols and left it with them feeling comfortable. They accomplished so much in the 2 days they had it, and then I needed additional help at home with the printers/routers, etc and the tech that came out was amazingly helpful and patient.
