I took my Mother to Dr. Robert Mack in Hoffman Estates, IL to discuss her increasing difficulty with double vision. Dr. Mack said he does not specialize in double vision, but could refer us to a doctor. During Dr. Mack's exam he indicated a lens from a past cataract procedure was needing a maintenance type procedure. Dr. Mack said the lens can move and cause great discomfort. At that time my Mother had no discomfort. He indicated the laser procedure would take only few minutes. There was no dialog about alternative methods or risk to the eye. The follow up appointment, after the laser procedure, resulted in blurry vision to the eye. Dr. Mack suggested glasses before even looking at the eye to see if there was a problem. Prior to the procedure my Mother could see clearly, even with the double vision, but the procedure resulted in blurry vision in that eye. I was surprised and concerned. I asked Dr. Mack how this happened and why this risk was not discussed prior to the procedure. Dr. Mack responded in an agitated manner as if his work is being questioned. He treated us as if we were ungrateful and talked to us as if needing glasses was the problem. He literally said "I am ready to open Champaign and celebrate because I saved your mom from blindness." When I said, "I didn't expect blurry vision", he replied with "Neither did I" and walked out of the room leaving us confused. Dr. Mack never mentioned possible blindness in the previous visits. We felt Dr. Mack should have been more detailed about the laser procedure and covered possible risks. This experience was so unnerving that we will no longer see Dr. Mack and seek another ophthalmologist. The majority of Dr. Mack's procedures are probably successful and end with satisfied patients, but if you are not satisfied there is no reassurance or discussion. read more

After years of wearing glasses and struggling to wear contacts, I was referred to Dr Mack for PRK (a type of lasik) visits leading up the surgery were great, quick and thorough. Dr. Mack and his staff have provided me with caring and excellent treatment of my OCP. His diagnosis and treatment has saved my eye sight. Due to the complex cases, such as mine that he handles, occasionally the wait times can be significant. However, I have learned that this can sometime happen due to the time required to try to preserve an individual patient's eye sight. Extremely long wait times and incompetent staff. I was on time for an 11:30 appointment, prefilled-out all forms. Waited 15 minutes then called into an exam room -hey maybe all the terrible reviews are wrong. Well, a woman checked my eye pressure real quick...then sat me back in the waiting room! Waited until 12:30 then asked front desk how much longer could be expected. The receptionist said there were still 4 more people ahead of me! What? An hour past my appt time and still reasonably 40+ minutes more? I walked straight out that door. Beware!!! read more

These people are thieves. They don't have any concern for anything except making money. They pulled an eye lash and tried to bill insurance over $100. Insurance said no, but negotiated the price to $60 that I have to pay for "outpatient surgery". To pull an eyelash... Scumbags. read more

My optometrist referred me to Dr. Mack after I was dealing with severe, recurring cornea problems. After a series of tests he diagnosed me with a rare, vision threatening, parasitic infection. The rare nature of the parasite made balancing my treatment a challenge - a caused me a lot of stress - but after two months of rigorous treatment, both my eyes have healed. The in-take staff, technicians, and Dr. Mack and Dr. Kurzawa were all friendly, professional, and pleasant to interact with. Frustrating experience with this Eye Center. First of all, I was made to wait an hour during my first appointment and only after I complained to the front desk after one hour, did I get seen within 10 minutes. Then my pharmacy sent them a pre-authorization request form which they were supposed to fill out and send to my insurance company. They misplaced the form not once, but twice ! Which resulted in a delay in me continuing with the treatment sequence which Dr. Mack had prescribed. Very irresponsible and careless. Once my eye problem is fixed (assuming it does), I am never ever going back here. read more

If I could give "0" stars I would. They don't value YOUR time in this office. On my first appointment, I waited 50 mins to see Dr. Shaw. After going thru the exam and figuring out my prescription, I ordered new glasses at a local boutique only to discover the script was wrong. I went back for a "recheck" with Dr. Shaw, only to wait 35 mins before I decided to walk out the door. The office is always full and it feels to me like they stack up patients to make more $$$. I'll keep it short. Mine is a long story that went on for years. Mack was good in the 90's but the 90's are long gone. If he tells you to get eyelid surgery to fix dry eyes that may or may not have been caused by Lasik, run very fast. Do yourself a favor and stay away from him. read more

I am writing this to recommend Dr. Mack for his professional integrity and diligence. I'm a patient of Dr. Mack's and during an exam he noticed something amiss. To his credit he called an ambulance and had me taken to the hospital to be checked out. I am so very grateful for I was told I had pre-stroke symptoms and was admitted for a variety of tests. I really feel he may have saved me from a difficult experience and highly recommend Dr. Mack. He is most knowledgeable, capable and caring. read more

Pushed me into having surgery on both eyes as soon as he found out my insurance was good.Tried to get me to set up appointment to do other eye right after the first, but I said I wanted to see the results of the first one before going to the next.He was not pleased. Guess what, it hurt real bad and made my vision much worse. I refused to do any thing else about it for the next 5 years, it made me so upset. My vision continued to get worse, and I was forced to see another doctor. He gave a totally different diagnosis . Am going to try again next week and hope this one is right. read more

My son had a degenerative cornea disease that would have taken his sight. Dr Mack and his team saved him from a lifetime of blurs and halos. Had a scheduled appointment at 2:15 was asked to arrive early to fill out paperwork so arrived at 1:50. The front staff was unfriendly no smile stone faced. As I looked around I noticed the carpet was disgustingly dirty there were old spills and stains. There were displays with glasses the glasses were filled with dust webs were spread thru them. I'm walking to the bathroom noticed every staff remember I came across looked unhappy. The women's bathroom was visibly dirty the hand sink had mold and mildew that was settled along the knobs and faucet. Back to the waiting there was a water station that was dried out with lime residue all around. The chair next to mine looked like someone had urinated on it and it dried leaving a stain. The place was overall disgusting!! We waited for about 45 minutes then escorted to what we thought would be the doctor well no it was an assistant she did her thing then asked us to go to a different waiting room yup waiting and waiting an hour passed we were then escorted to another exam room told the doctor would be with us next I asked how long she replied 10 minutes. Well 20 minutes later he walks in dr Mack , a complete arrogant ass. He asked my husband who he used to see my husband relied then I stated that the only reason he's switching was due to the 1 hour 45 minute wait time which he curtly replied "well I can give u names of doctors that you don't have to wait for they are all no good" so for this idiot of a doctor it's okay to book patients so close together that they wait 2 hours to see the great Oz??? He suggested to my husband that he should how back in 3 months to check if he's lost side vision.....he is a suspect for glaucoma he doesn't have has been using drops for 2 years it's borderline. I asked what good that would do a 3 month visit the assistant replied "well to check, it's the doctors recommendation" I asked will he be able to prevent side loss vision "no" so again why a 3 month check up the insurance pays 2 check ups every six months her reply was cause that's the recommendation. Needless to say we are not going back!!! Stay away from this miserable office with this arrogant egotistical jerk as a doctor. read more

I agree with the other review that was posted about Mack Eye Center - stay away!! My elderly father went to Dr. Mack and was talked into having cataract surgery on an eye that hadn't worked for 30 years due to a previous surgery. Instead of doing cataract surgery on the working eye, Dr. Mack performed surgery on the non-working eye and told my father that the surgery may not help his vision. After the surgery, my father ended up in the emergency room two days after the surgery. They had put him in restraints during the surgery and my father ended up with swollen (almost fractured wrists). The day after the surgery my father went in for his post-op appointment and was not even seen by Dr. Mack, but rather a different doctor, Dr. Shah. Dr. Shah had to have seen my father's black and swollen wrists, but said nothing and sent my father home after the post-op appointment. My father's friend, who had taken him to the post-op visit called me after the post-op appointment frantic, stating that my dad was in tremendous pain and didn't look good. My father ended up having to go the emergency room, and ended up in the hospital for a week, and then had to go to a nursing home for rehab for two weeks. My father stated that he wasn't aware of how drastic the surgery was going to be. Even though I called Dr. Mack's office to tell them what was happening, I was greeted with a non-caring staff. Not one of them called over to the hospital to see how my dad was doing, even though they were the ones who caused him having to go to the hospital. Not surprisingly, the cataract surgery did nothing to help my father's vision. Why a doctor can take advantage of an older person and talk them into unnecessary surgery with no promise of any type of improvement in their eyesight is beyond me. Just like the other reviewer said that Mack Eye Clinic orders unnecessary tests, I have to wonder if the surgery on my father was to allow Mack Eye Clinic to receive medicaid payments. read more

I have been a patient of Dr. Robert Mack since 2004 and have the utmost respect for this brilliant man. He performed PRK on both of my eyes that year and gave me the gift of perfect vision. I had worn glasses since second grade and being able to see without glasses or contacts at the age of 45 was an incredible gift to me. Since that time I had one "enhancement" performed in 2008, at no extra charge as they are included in the initial price, and my vision has been perfect since then. He is high energy and at times there is a 1+ hour wait but I feel he is worth the wait. He always comes in the exam room, shakes my hand and apologizes for the wait and I reply "you are worth the wait". He performed corneal transplants on my brother 20+ years ago and he is still going strong. The office is beautiful and I have never found it to be dirty or messy. His technical staff is wonderful. One comment is that the reception desk young ladies are not friendly or overly helpful so that issue could be addressed. Otherwise, I highly recommend Dr. Robert Mack and his associates. read more
