FOOD I visited with a couple friends and tried a range of pastries-- the double chocolate croissant, kouign amann, orange cardamom morning bun, and rhubarb danish. -Double chocolate pain au chocolat: Not too sweet but a bit too flaky and lacked flavor (not enough chocolate taste to shine through) -Kouign amann: My favorite pastry but unfortunately also a bit too dry and lacking in flavor. It was more of a croissant than the buttery pastry I associate kouign amanns with -Orange cardamom morning bun: My favorite of the pastries! Light, airy, and just the right touch of sweetness -Rhubarb danish: Very unique but not for me. The rhubarb was very tangy and a bit tough to chew. The texture was an interesting contrast to the flakiness of the rest of the pastry and the smoothness of the cream Unfortunately, I set my expectations a bit too high and the items I tried unfortunately fell short. SERVICE The staff are kind and friendly! The line can get quite long, but the staff are really efficient and moving the line along. AMBIANCE Located in the Bok Building, there's ample seating in the general seating area right by and behind the storefront. The space is shared with other guests visiting Two Persons Coffee and the stores in Bok. I saw some people working/studying, but it can get quite busy/loud. PARKING Paid street parking is available at a limited capacity. Most people park in neighboring streets or take the bus. BATHROOMS Bathrooms are located throughout the building. read more

Wanted to come here for a while! This wonderful bakery is inside the Bok Building. I got few items to try, plus a loaf of their sourdough bread. The service is nice, and the space is light filled, not too large, but enough seatings. Even if there are no seats inside the bakery you can most likely find seatings in the hallway area. My family and I enjoyed all their pastries, and I really like the fact that these aren't super sweet. Some of their pastries are so pretty also. Cannot wait to go back and try other items! read more

Since we both had a weekday off we decided to come here on a Wednesday morning. Street parking which we were aware of. We got lucky finding a spot right in the corner! We walked around almost the entire building before finding the correct entrance but now we know where it is! I'll admit I was very overwhelmed when we walked in because we were in line and had no idea what we wanted. So I quickly ordered two items (almond croissant and an apple item, maybe a caramel apple bun) and my boyfriend picked a croissant and a small basque cheesecake. They don't serve coffee so we decided to get our items to go. I was told later by a friend that there is a small coffee shop right next door but they were closed for the holidays. I definitely want to go back when we can get coffee then go in and get something to eat so we can sit and relax there. My friend and I went to Machine Shop this past weekend. I ordered savory pastries (jammy egg + shatta, caramelized onion danish, and fall curried squash danish (seasonal flavor, I believe). Even though I usually don't like runny or jammy eggs (I tend to like my eggs fully cooked), the flaky pastry, cheese, and jammy egg complemented each other well. I thought the fall curried squash danish was okay. It wasn't amazing and it wasn't bad, but I would not order it again (due to the price point and overall taste). I saved the best for last though. When I tried the caramelized onion, I loved how they kept the onion's original shape and rings in the caramelized onion tart. Because it was caramelized, bits of the tart got stuck in the molars of my teeth but it was a small price to pay. My friend, on the other hand, ordered the lemon tart (with the torched meringue) and the double chocolate pain au chocolat. Luckily, my friend let me a try a bite of their sweet desserts. I liked how the lemon tart had three different textures (lemon filling, crust, and meringue). When I tried a little of the double chocolate pain au chocolat, I could tell that the chocolate inside the pastry was high quality. Overall, I preferred the savory pastries over the sweet ones. The staff was quite friendly and at first, the carmelized onion tarts were not displayed so I thought they ran out, but one of the workers heard my slight surprise and my complaint and they told me that the carmelized onion tarts would be coming out shortly. The only reason I rated Machine Shop 4/5 stars, rather than 5/5 stars was because I feel like the desserts are quite overpriced compared to the small sizes of the pastries and, in general, I'm not a big fan of their sweet desserts (which is a majority of their menu). The jammy egg and caramelized onion tart were my favorites and I would definitely go back just for those. First off I was very confused trying to figure out where the entrance was to this building. Luckily I looked up some reviews and figure it out. I arrived a few mins after they opened the bakery and there was already a line! The line does move fairly quickly and the employees were loading the latest baked goods. This place smelled AMAZING. I wanted to try everything ofcourse but this time only tried 4 items. For cold items I got the lemon tart (AMAZING...the tart and the sweet together made my taste buds dance!), the chocolate cake (for rich and dark chocolate notes very very good). I also got a small coffee cake (my husband and daughter finished this one up immediately once I came home with it haha) and the zucchini tart that just came out of the oven. Located on the first floor of the Bok Building in South Philly, it provides freshly-baked pastries, desserts, and foods during the morning and afternoon period. Their menu of baked goods changes every month, and often provides specials on weekends. I loved my cara cara croissant, which was super flaky and meshed great with the citrus hints and creme inside. Unfortunately I forgot the name of the other item, but its runny egg also made for a delicious bite. Because I typically take SEPTA and walk to the building, do note that parking will be limited since it's located in a predominantly residential neighborhood. The lines will get busy on weekends and near closing, but the shop is definitely worth the wait! An absolutely incredible bakery in Philadelphia! It's in the Bok building. They seem to change their menu every month and have a variety of fresh baked goods including specials on the weekend. As a vegetarian, I love savory pastries and machine shop delivers! The mushroom one and the spinach and cheese one were both incredible! We also got the orange cardamom bun- HIGHLY recommend one of the best I had. The twice baked almond croissant wasn't my favorite but the almond filling was good- was just wanting more! The service was kind and they helped us choose during our first time there. The seating is nice inside with high ceilings and plenty of tables! Machine Shop serves some of the best pastries in all of Philadelphia. They are nestled in a repurposed school building. The staff is always incredibly nice. In addition to pastries, they make some of the best breads the city has to offer. Every single pastry and bread is exceptional, you will not be disappointed. Today I decided to get breakfast and lunch from my two local bakeries in the Bok building. First I went to get the Jammy egg I love so much, then I would go to my absolute favorite bakery on the 4th floor to grab a mushroom galette for dinner. While getting breakfast I noticed petite mushroom galettes. Shocked I asked, "Do you know XX [bakery on the 4th floor] has always had mushroom galettes?" The guy nodded yes. I commented that what they were doing is dirty business. My attorney friends and I feel certain there must be a non-compete agreement for the food places -- maybe it's why no other eating establishment sells coffee to go, or why signage for the bakery on the 4th floor is non-existent? I had such a hard time deciding what to get because everything looked so good! Ended up getting goat cheese & everything croissants and a hazelnut croissant. Both were phenomenal. Flaky and buttery, exactly as they should be. The goat cheese & everything croissant almost tasted like an everything bagel with cream cheese, which I say in the most positive manner. Have heard sooo much about Machine Shop being one of the best bakeries in Philly - on a chilly-ish Saturday morning in the fall, we tried out their breakfast pastries and coffee and were pretty impressed. Of course there was a line, but it went by pretty quickly; Machine Shop has nailed their ordering system to be efficient. However, the menu we saw on their Instagram was out of date with their in-person menu that day - not a huge deal, but there was a savory pastry we didn't get to try. We did share the goat cheese-stuffed croissants, pain au chocolat, and orange cardamon morning bun. The croissants were super flaky and crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside - the goat cheese was a delicious addition. Both sweet pastries were also good, though I've had similar or better versions at other Philly shops. The vibes were really fun, with kids and families hanging out in the limited seating spaces. If you go, I would recommend tag-teaming coffee and pastries with a friend (there is a separate line for both) and looking at the menu and Instagram pictures ahead of time so you have an idea of what you want before getting to the counter. We went to the Machine Shop over the weekend. Parking is atrocious, I probably drove around for 20 minutes for finding one. The store is in the BOK building but the entrance is on the side. It is pretty big inside and there are a line 50+ long. Another 20 minutes in the line before we got to order. They have a changing menu so we just asked for recommendations. Before we know it, got a full bag of maybe 10 different pastries. Every single one of them are tasty. Definitely worth all the effort. Highly recommend. read more

Machine Shop is the literal definition of a hidden gem. I only recently came to know about it despite living in Philly for 8+ years. It lived up to the hype and much more. Being situated in the Bok building, their space is very open, airy, huge ceilings, and industrial style. The guy behind the counter was friendly and had a big smile for all of the customers. I chose a chocolate cake, blueberry tart and a savory tomato pastry. The chocolate cake is like a mousse cake and pretty much the best chocolate dessert I have ever had! The blueberry tart was delicious, even with the mini size, they didn't skimp on the fruits. The base was crumbly yet firm and so buttery. The savory pastry was flaky and delicate and by the time we went to get a second round, it was already sold out. Someone suggested getting coffee from Two Persons cafe next door - which is what we did as well. Amazing pastries, lots of plants and a friendly staff makes this place feel so welcoming! While this is a bit further from our house than other VERY tasty bakeries (Essen, Kouklet, Mighty Bread), it's worth the trek because 1) we can bring our dog and dine in 2) their pastries are unmatched. If you're a fatty, you should get 2 pastries each (like my partner and I do), but if you're not super hungry, one should do the trick. The jammy egg one is a fan fav and so is their (twice baked) almond or chocolate croissant AND their onion danish (all pictured below). We try to switch it up but keep reverting to these four staples. We haven't tried their bread, cakes/tarts or cookies yet, but we plan on it soon (if we can ever stop ordering these pastries). Is this the best pastry destination in Philly? I am not sure. It's been several years since we visited Philly and we haven't checked out other places. However, I must agree that all the hype around Machine Shop is 100% justified. When I told the staff that it was my first time there and asked for her recommendations, she just said that everything was good. We decided on the orange cardamom morning bun, twice baked chocolate hazelnut croissant, and hibiscus lime tart. Just liked the staff said, everything was good, really good. My favorite was easily the flaky yet not too greasy croissant. I have never had a twice baked croissant before; now I wonder if I will ever have another one that's so delicious and high quality.
