Stumbled upon this bakery on a walk. The pastry options were different than you normally see at other places. There was a more unique variety. I tried the Carrot Yogurt Safeha $7 (roasted carrots, topped with herby yogurt sauce, zatar, walnuts, and olive oil). This was delicious! I ate the first half heated and the second half hours later. No idea why it took me so long but hello to my new favorite bakery and even closer than machine shop Philly or mighty bread in south Philly. These guys sell the best tasting baguette so far in the city at a reasonable price too! Hurry and get your bread before their lines are out the door and around the block. They use just a normal pizza style electric oven ? Not the wood burning style but still I loved my baguette. Last night sliced up and thrown in the iron grill with butter, rosemary, garlic essence-after I took my steaks off. Toasted nicely, press with aioli a d grilled onions and topped with steak. Love their sourdough breads and also all the treats. Enjoyed both hot pockets- cabbage and potato with tzatziki style dip. read more

I got one of the labneh Safehas (can't remember exactly which one!) which was pretty good, but the pistachio cardamom bun was absolutely one of the top desserts I've had! Amazing Syrian bakery! Wide assortments of pastries (both savoury and sweet). The space is rather small for dining so if you want to dine in go there on the earlier side. My daughter lived in Beirut for close to a year and there are many Syrians there also. She said the flavour reminded her of Beirut. We tried different pastries, and seriously, they are all worth trying. I cannot say which one is my favourite because they all tasted so good! I saw this place advertised on (yes to the few who read my reviews regularly, you guessed it) TooGoodToGo. While I haven't had the fortune of winning an offering yet, I wanted to try this place real bad because of the ratings on TooGoodToGo, here, and I only know of this Levantine bakery and another pop-up. It is nice to be able to have a piece of a culture I am unfamiliar with and sadly would not feel comfortable traveling to such countries alone or not through a reputable tour company. Wish I could travel more but a place like this is the next best thing. With the prevalence of world events and issues without getting too into it, I feel like more Levantine places are increasing in number because food is a great invisible "language" to connect w others and it just shows how human we all really are. And plus this bakery is just a winner!! The spiced tea has a strong spice flavor that I personally love. Those rose tea has a good strength for me too. For those of you who do not like stronger flavors, maybe stick with something more typical to mainstream US I would guess. I finally talked about the food, lol. The following day, they had an event for making their first pizza ever for the public. The toppings of potato and the type of sausage they used were different than I'd ever had for a pizza but worked well. The tomato slice I had was cold but the sauce was very tasty. My friend and I got pastries to go from Majdal to eat outside on a beautiful Sunday morning, and the food was amazing! We got 3 things to split: Harissa Eggplant Safeha (flatbread filled with roasted eggplant and harissa filling, topped with preserved lemons, herbs, & walnuts), Potato Fatayer (flatbread stuffed with potato, onion, and spices, served with an herby sour cream sauce), and a Cardamom Cinnamon Bun topped with pistachio cream cheese frosting. The last time I visited Majdal, I braved crossing Broad Street during the Eagles victory parade. But I was determined because Majdal's pastries are worth it! The staff have all been super friendly and helpful in making suggestions when I've visited. The bakery space is intimate, with a few tables, including two located in the sun-soaked window - the perfect location to snap a beautiful photo of your pastry. I've truly enjoyed everything I've had from Majdal. It takes a talented baker to be able to execute so highly on such a wide variety of pastries, from leavened bread products (both sweet and savory) to beautiful, delicate tarts to tender, moist basbousa. So far, my favorite savory pastry has been the chicken sumac fatayer, which is served with a super tasty, creamy yellow sauce, and my favorite sweet pastry has been the pistachio tart from the Valentines Day tart trio special. The ambiance is nice and the staff was friendly. I also ordered a few things to go. The lemon poppy has Pisa is pictured. That's very dense and soaked in a syrup. This is the shop I have been waiting to find and the review I have been wanting to write for so long! I came here after seeing a photo on Eater and I am so thankful I stopped in. Immediately you are met with light and greenery with flowers and plants all over. You feel a sense of happiness walking in and this place gives the phrase "hole in the wall" a definition. I haven't been to a place in so long where I actually had trouble choosing what to try. I ended up picking the chicken sumac fatayer, the chickpea safeha and a butter and fig jam bread. They chicken sumac item was fantastic. It was similar to an empanada, but was so savory and delicious with a fantastic dipping sauce. The spiced tea was also homemade and perfectly seasoned. So impressed with my experience here, but just know, it is a bit pricey so choose your items wisely. I would definitely skip the butter and jam item and get two of the chicken items next time! read more

This bakery is a work of art. I've had the tahini babka and the hazelnut babka and they were both amazing. For true delight, ask them to heat the pastry in the oven for a few seconds to really bring out the moisture in the pastry, while maintaining the crisp on the outside. The bakbas were incredibly delicious and I can't wait to try everything else on the menu, both sweet and savory. The baguettes look legit and I'm sure they would go great with some fancy cheese from the Italian market. The owner and the people who work there are delightful. This place is extraordinary, probably the highest quality bakery I've encountered in the US, and I've traveled extensively. The bakery offers creative versions of sweet and savor baked goods inspired by traditional Levantine recipes. I tried a couple when I visited in the morning, and took a sampling home to have later in the day--and they still tasted remarkably fresh. The service was prompt and friendly, and the ambiance was welcoming and pleasant. I ordered the tahini, maple, & pecan babka (muffin), the chickpea shawarma safeha (open face savory pie), the potato fatayer (hand pie), the cabbage fatayer, the greens, cheese, & olive borek (savory pastry), and the pistachio tart.
